Louise Nevelson was arguably her own most special creation. A towering figure of 20th-century art, the American sculptor is remembered as much for her theatrical ensembles as for her trailblazing, room-size installations.

While Nevelson, who died in 1988, routinely adorned herself in piles of jewelry collected from far-flung travels, less known is the fact that many of the totemic pieces she wore like talismans were designed and made by her in the last 25 years of her life.
“These jewels were important mini sculptures,” says Arne Glimcher, the legendary New York art dealer and founder of Pace Gallery, which has represented Nevelson and her estate for 60 years. “I’m surprised it’s taken the fashion world so long to pay attention.”

‘Black Wall’
Louise Nevelson 1959
Born in the Ukraine in 1899, Louise Nevelson immigrated with her family to the US in the early 20th century. Breaking misogynistic taboos, her art paved the way for so many feminine artists in the 70s. She became known for her large monumental & monochromatic sculptures and her influence on countless feminist artists. I think the most beautiful thing about her work are the intricacies within the subtlety of it.

Blog at 40, Louise Nevelson at 40
It’s been a few since I wrote my last blogpost at 40 around a feminist artist when she was 40...after listening to Bernadine Franco’s podcast around Louise Nevelson, Beyond the Paint #100, I was inspired to look back at this mid-century Russian born, American artist I didn’t know much about. Franco keenly reviews and describes Nevelson’s sculptural and architectural processes and style using found objects and painting these enormous sculpture collages one hue that challenged traditional norms of art as well as art by women.
A noted work Franco looks at his  Louise Nevelson: “Sky Cathedral,” 1982 Image Credit: SAAM:

Painting the whole work black one of the artist’s favorite colors because it “encompasses all colors...quiet...and...the whole...” Franco went on to discuss Nevelson’s’ truly paving the way for women artists, and this poignant and inspiring quote by the artist:
“I think the most important thing to do in living is to do it. One has to have courage really and one must gamble with life to really move into the areas where they can fulfill themselves.”
I love this - the work I was most familiar with of Nevelson’s I learned about in grad school and saw at the National Museum for Women in the arts, that Franco also discussed,  White Column (from "Dawn's Wedding Feast"), 1959:
Tumblr media
An earlier work than the previously noted, this work that is separated into many collections, was painted all white, which Nevelson said: “ whites move out a little bit into outer space with more freedom.”  Originally consisting of columns made of found objects in NY, each piece represented a part of a wedding; wedding attendants, four wedding chapels, a cake, chest, mirror, pillow, and bride and groom, which when walking through likely created a more intimate experience than the now separate one. This was a departure from Nevelson’s usual painted black sculptures; and notably, created right after her divorce, perhaps indicating a new direction, clean slate, for her, if ironic subject, perhaps, married to herself or her work? As a recent divorcee, I can absolutely relate...
To back up though - Nevelson was born in 1899 in Russia, emigrated to the US in her youth. She didn’t attend art school in the 30s, (during which she spent two years in Munich studying with Hans Hoffman), and at age 40 (1939), she worked for the   Works Progress Administration (WPA) in the easel painting and sculpture divisions.  She also assisted Diego Rivera on a mural in 1939. During the 1930s, she created sculptures of found wood, terra cotta sculptures, oil paintings and nude drawings. In the 1940s, post age 40, is when her work really starts to gain momentum and attention.

Nude Drawing, 1935, by Louise Nevelson
The only work I could find around this time was this Nude Drawing, a modest line drawing that I love, exploring the curves of the body in a simple, gestural way.
At 40, it’s inspiring to know that someone can only just be beginning at this age, gaining her footage a bit later...
I haven’t drawn a tribute to Louise yet! But I will very soon...

"Louise Nevelson at Jewish Book Fair brunch gathering, millionaire patron's Park Avenue Apartment, November 9, 1986 -- I'd never met her before, she took me home to Mott Street in a stretch limousine hired for her, showed me her studio, gave me her autobio book signed, never saw her again.

The Face in the Moon: Drawings and Prints by Louise Nevelson Exhibition Graphics
Louise Nevelson an artist best known for her monochromatic wooden sculptures, produced a distinctive body of works on paper over the course of her long career. Drawn entirely from the Whitney’s collection, this exhibition, on view from July 20–October 8, 2018, followed her work in drawing, printing, and collage, from her early focus on the human body through her progression into abstraction.
