Hey 😊, thinking about Laws mental health (poor boy 🥺) . We know he's traumatized, with anxiety, depression and nightmares. I often ask myself what a psychological therapist would recommend/ how threat him. 🤔 3 times Luffy a day maybe 😅
Hi! Thanks for the ask! Okay, since it's a serious ask, my answer will also be serious: what I would reccommend him is a freaking good therapy. There's no way someone who isn't a specialist can help him recover. Like yes, staying with people who care for him, like friends and family, is helpful and needed for longterm recovery (to create good environment in which a traumatized person is loved and accepted), but it won't help reduce the symptoms on it's own.
I'm not a psychologist, but I do like reading about psychology. What I think Law is suffering from is PTSD, post-traumatic stress disorder. It occurs in people who have experienced or witnessed a traumatic event or series of events (like a natural disaster, assault, bullying, homicide, mass murder, war etc.) that affect their mental, emotional, physical, social and spiritual well-being. People with PTSD may avoid situations or people that remind them of the traumatic event, and they may have strong negative reactions to something as ordinary as a loud noise or an accidental touch. Does it sound familiar, with Law experiencing mass genocide in Flevance and then witnessing Cora-san's murder (reinforcing unhealed trauma), and as the result avoiding contact with people? Because it totally should sound like him.
People with PTSD have intense, disturbing thoughts and feelings related to their experience that last long after the traumatic event has ended. Symptoms of PTSD include things like:
intrusive thoughts (repeated involuntarily memories, vivid flashbacks: like the traumatic event happened mere moments ago instead of in the distant past);
avoidance of triggering situations (places, people, acitvities, objects or situations) because it can trigger distressing memories;
altering mood and cognition which leads to negative thoughts and feelings about oneself or others (low self-esteem, self blaming for the event occuring even if there's nothing the person could have done realistically, ongoing feelings of fear, anger, shame, guilt, less interest in things one previously enjoyed, feeling detached from others, unable to experience positive emotions like happiness or satisfaction);
altering reactivity like being prone to angry outsbursts, being irritable, behaving recklessly or in self-destructive way, hypervigilance, having problems concentrating or sleeping. There can be also physical symptoms like tremors, headaches etc.
As a result people experiencing PTSD often resist talking about what happened or how they feel about it, and withdrawing from people, so they don't have to relive those symptoms over and over again. Which is kinda a vicious circle because by avoiding it they don't really help themselves heal and instead completely isolate themselves, both from others, and their own emotions.
Symptoms can last months or years or decades, if unhealed. PTSD can occur with other related conditions, such as depression, substance use, memory problems and other physical and mental health problems (for example impulsive behaviour or anxiety). Why is PTSD even a thing? Psychology tells us it's because brain tries to cope with what happened. Human brains are very problem-solving oriented so they will relive the traumatic event over and over again to try to find a solution to it, to make sure such situation won't happen again. And it usually won't stop till it finds a satisfying answer. But traumatic events aren't the fault of the victims, so it becomes a self-tormenting overfixation as the result.
Besides medicaments (usually antidepressants), there are three therapies that are reccommended to help one recover from PTSD. Apparently the therapies are more helpful than meds. They also probably bring best results when combined instead of focusing only on one or two methods.
First therapy method that is apparently quite effective is Prolonged Exposure. In Law's case it would mean exposing himself to a triggering situation, like for example practicing touching other people again, in safe environment. It has usually two phases: imaginary in the therapy session and outside of therapy, kinda like a homework exercise. It sounds very easy, but of course it's anything but, because all the feelings of anxiety, stress and physical symptoms aren't going anywhere, and the therapist would be helping to develop healthy ways of coping with them whenever that happens. The goal is to get used to the thing one was avoiding because it was too triggering. If done wrong I believe it can make the PTSD even worse.
Another method is Cognitive Processing Therapy. It's the "talking therapy" many would probably imagine as a standard procedure. The goal of it is to become more aware of the relationship between thoughts and emotions and begin to identify “automatic thoughts” that may be responsible for the PTSD symptoms. It's basically deep-diving into oneself, scrutinizing thinking patterns and associations one makes about the traumatic event and how one perceives oneself as the result of it. The patient talks about their experience and their feelings, while the therapist helps by asking questions and pointing out maladaptive thinking (like self-blaming thoughts) in order to modify harmful beliefs about oneself. In Law's case, his belief of having failed Flevance and selfblaming himself for not being able to save anyone, and his low self-esteem as the result, would be one of examples of his maladaptive thinking. There's no way a 10 year old child could have done anything to save the country or city, no matter if he's a child of doctors or not. It's not his fault any of this happened, not his fault that he tried his best to survive, and not his fault he had no means of helping anyone. Even as an adult, he also wouldn't be able to do all of that.
The goal is for the patient to develop skills to identify and address unhelpful thinking and beliefs. Next step is to adapt this skill outside of treatment to improve daily life. The therapy is often focused on such fields as safety, trust, power, control, esteem and intimacy, which tend to be affected the most by traumatic experiences. In Law's case it means helping him learn how to open up to people again, creating and maintaining friendships and other kind of relationships, how to deal with feeling vulnerable around people, how to not be overwhelmed so it doesn't prevent him from talking about his experiences and thoughts, how to trust people again, how to get control over his own traumatic responses, how to achieve the feeling of safety around people etc. He would have definitely a lot to work through.
Third possible therapy is EMDR (Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing). The basic idea of it is to use stimulation (most common is side-to-side eye movement, or alternating sounds or taps, timed to the patient talking about their feelings) to reduce and hopefully eliminate PTSD symptoms. It sounds a bit like magic, but it's actually a behavioral therapy, it's based on the belief that stress symptoms caused by trauma are due to memories not being correctly processed inside the brain. When a person with PTSD is experiencing a triggering event or emotionally charged situation, their brain can feel like it "froze" or got "stuck", overfocused on the trigger. It's especially harmful when it's so severe that the patient can't tell what has happened in their past and what’s happening in the present.
EMDR therapy makes use of both the left and right sides of your brain (one responsible for processing the movement, the other for thinking), enhancing the natural ability to heal and process information. This allows to separate intense emotions from the memories, so the emotions by themselves can be “reprocessed” or "reassigned". The therapy begins by teaching you how to ground yourself, and then gradually breaks down the tough stuff into smaller, more manageable chunks. I'm always sceptical whenever I read about EMDR, but one of my friends went through it and said it was indeed effective and helpful, so who am I to doubt it? Apparently the biggest advantage of the EMDR is that it doesn’t require people to speak about the intolerable, triggering events or explain to a therapist why they feel in particular way (that sounds like it would really help Law who doesn't seem to want to talk about his emotions). It still needs proper preparation stage, so it's not like the patient won't have to speak *at all* about his trauma, and the session ends with reaffirming the results. I'm not gonna lie but many behavioural therapies sound like they could be used for malignant purposes, if in the wrong hands. It basically teaches the patient that a certain assiociated behaviour is connected with a specific action.
There are also other complementary and alternative therapies for people with PTSD, that require less talking and disclosure than psychotherapy. Examples include acupuncture, yoga (and possibly other physical-based activities) and animal-assisted therapy. I'm sure Bepo already is exactly that (and more, since he's also Law's best friend) for Law, and Chopper could be as well. The case with Chopper would be a mutual benefit, because Chopper has his own PTSD symptoms as well, so he and Law could both help each other to heal. Peer support group is also usually reccommended, and I'm looking at you here, Robin! After all those two share many similar symptoms of their traumas and their experiences are also quite similar.
It's worthy to mention that some patients also report feeling tired or experiencing more vivid dreams following reprocessing sessions as the initial result of the therapy. Sometimes things need to get worse before they can become better. Also it's normal for healing process to not be linear, it's usually marked with ups and downs, and can take months or even years (with exception of EMDR which is said to bring really fast relieving results). At times things get so good the patient doesn't need therapy for a while, but after a particularly awful flashback or going through very triggering situation they might need it again, because the symptoms came back. As the result of the therapy the patient also knows themselves much better, know how to cope with certain triggers and how to deal with the aftermath, regulate their breathing, how to sooth physical symptoms, recognize the uncomfortable situation and remove oneself as fast as possible from it etc. Also it helps them gain confidence and stop negative thoughts about themselves (shame, blame, low self-esteem). It also gives them the tools to reimagine themselves and their mind's frameworks so even if a trigger happens again, at least they can fight against their very own selfguilting trips about that.
But will the triggers ever truly go away? Maybe yes, maybe not. The goal of therapy isn't to "fix" someone like the bad event never happened, but to deal with the results of it in better, not self-harming ways. But there is a high chance for triggers to happen less often when the patient has a safe environment around him, like family and friends, who are there for him and make sure to avoid their triggers, support him whenever he needs that etc. That's why, eventually, Luffy three times a day (or rather: spending time with Strawhats and Hearts every day) is gonna be essential in Law's longterm recovery. Still, this is healing process we're talking about, no matter how successful the therapy is, Law might still experience nightmares (even really nasty ones) from time to time, and occassionally even regularly, after he experienced something like almost losing someone important to him again, stuck in a helpless situation, or suddenly grabbed violently, or people telling him to not come any closer or not touch them. Therapy helps so the PTSD doesn't dominate daily life, but it can't really make the triggers stop being triggering. Take sexual assault for example, no matter the amount of therapy, it will never make you feel okay with sexual assault. And it's also not the point.
Sometimes, I feel like people sending me questions about Law's intimacy expect Law to get "completely normal" and never experience any trigger again, just cuddling happily with people for the rest of his days, like nothing terrible ever happened to him. Yes, he might get to that point when interacting with people he trusts and feels close with, like touching or hugging, but no, it doesn't mean he will be okay with just anyone and everyone touching him. And sometimes touch will feel bad and wrong no matter the intention, and make his symptoms return, maybe even for no clear reason whatsoever. And for example, being touched out of the blue, unexpectedly, like on a wrist (that's how Doflamingo grabbed him in Dressrosa), can make everything come back to him. It's normal for people with PTSD, even after they healed, because trauma is a bitch and doesn't just disappear. You just learn how to deal with it better. He can learn again how to allow others to touch him and touch them back, but it doesn't mean touch will never become bad again; in fact it still often can and will. Think of it like a permament scar - it will always be there, but you can learn to accept it as part of yourself and be less bothered about it, but it might still terribly hurt at certain times and there's nothing you can do about it. And it doesn't have to be a bad thing that makes you or others think like you're "broken" or "worse" in any way. It's just who you are.
Also, I think canon-wise, Law did some working through his trauma. Obviously touch is still a big issue for him (that trauma must be really severe), as well as helplessness or experiencing someone nearly dying, but he seemed to work through the self-blame around Vergo, for example, to some extent (he doesn't blame himself anymore for delivering Cora-san's message to him, his trigger doesn't overpower him and he can oppose and fight Vergo himself). Also Bepo's care and closeness must be doing really good things for Law. So props for the boy, he's actually doing what he can! And I'm certain spending more time on Sunny with Strawhats would make him get even better!
And one day we will see him as comfortable as on this double spread image and it will be one of the biggest victories in his healing process ❤
Still won't mean he will be 100% okay with any touch at any time, even from people he loves and who love him back.
#one piece#trafalgar law#trauma#ptsd#me just blabbling about psychotherapy#I'm not a psychologist tho!#again we should be proud of him instead of feeling sorry for Law#or trying to erase his trauma like it was never part of him in the first place#ask

Week 8 - Crowdsourcing
Crowdsourcing: A Beacon in the Dark
Technology is developing and being used at a rapid pace in tandem with the speed of the world. The world has shown an amazing capacity for creativity and improvisation, particularly in times of dire need, when communication systems fail us during natural disasters or other catastrophic events. The emergence of social media sites like Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and others has altered how we receive and distribute information. These platforms have evolved into vital instruments for news organisations and emergency services, as well as lifelines for those affected by disasters.
In times of disaster, traditional channels of communication may break down, but people's voices continue to be strong and loud, resonating throughout the vast digital cosmos. This phenomenon of harnessing collective intelligence through digital platforms is known as crowdsourcing.
Harnessing Collective Power
Two prominent instances are the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and the 2011 tsunami in Japan. The 2010 earthquake in Haiti and the 2011 tsunami in Japan made clear how important technology is to disaster relief efforts. Communities from all over the world united, and using technology for rapid relief and recovery was a big part of their joint endeavour. Notably, the Ushahidi platform was set up following the earthquake in Haiti, allowing individuals to text in crisis information that was subsequently plotted on maps to direct rescue operations. Such use of digital tools and social mapping platforms allowed for timely and effective collection and dissemination of on-the-ground data, ensuring targeted relief efforts (Zook, M., Graham, M., Shelton, T., & Gorman, S. 2010. Volunteered Geographic Information and Crowdsourcing Disaster Relief: A Case Study of the Haitian Earthquake. World Medical & Health Policy).
Beyond Crises: The Expanding Horizons of Crowdsourcing
Crowdsourcing is not limited to the context of disasters; it permeates many facets of our digital lives. It would be impossible to discuss crowdsourcing without mentioning its cousin, crowdfunding. The way projects are funded has changed dramatically as a result of websites like Kickstarter and GoFundMe, which emphasise community involvement over traditional gatekeepers.
The Synergy of Crowdsourcing and Social Media
The idea of crowdsourcing is not new at all—imagine town hall meetings or neighbourhood brainstorming sessions from the past—but its potential has been greatly enhanced by the widespread use of social media. These days, a request for assistance or an idea can be shared with millions of people worldwide in a matter of seconds. The democratic aspect of these platforms is what makes everything so beautiful; any voice, no matter where it comes from, has the power to be heard.
Social media and crowdsourcing naturally complement each other. Both flourish on the values of transparency, community involvement, and the common objective of improvement. As demonstrated in a number of crises, the two can spark ground-breaking solutions when they work together. The immediacy of social media, combined with the vast reservoir of global talents, means that solutions can be ideated, iterated, and implemented at a pace previously unimaginable (Brabham, D.C. 2013. Crowdsourcing in the Public Sector. Georgetown University Press).
The Ethical Dimensions of Crowdsourcing
Even though crowdsourcing has undeniable power, it's important to use caution when using it. Making sure crowdsourced information is accurate and reliable becomes crucial in a time when false information can spread just as quickly as the truth. After all, acting based on inaccurate information during a crisis can have disastrous results.
This brings up the crowdsourcing's ethical implications. How can we confirm that the information is accurate? How can we make sure that vulnerable or marginalised groups are not overshadowed by the voice of the crowd? Furthermore, in the context of crowdfunding, how can we guarantee openness and that the money goes to the designated recipients?
Conclusion
The digital era is evidence of how adaptive and inventive people can be. The increasing use of crowdsourcing serves as a reminder that human cooperation is still a powerful force in the increasingly automated world. Through social media and other platforms, our combined strength can be a source of hope and advancement in addressing global crises and advancing technology. Through our contemplations and interactions, we keep investigating this dynamic interaction, which is constantly changing and learning.

["At the end of August in 1981, I found myself in a small town in Arkansas, where I knew no Lesbians other than my new lover, Lynn. I wanted it that way. We were living in hiding from my armed and vengeful ex-lover who had abused me for four years and had threatened both of us with deadly harm. This was five years before the publication of Kerry Lobel's ground-breaking book, Naming the Violence: Speaking Out About Lesbian Battering. I knew I had been battered, but I did not understand how deeply I had been injured.
I only knew that I seemed to have saved my life at the cost of my sanity. I jumped at loud and not-so-loud noises. A frown from a stranger could reduce me to tears. I was afraid to bathe if I was alone in the apartment. I relived every word of every fight in relentless flashbacks. I had blocked much of the unbearable pain of the previous four years out of my consciousness at the time, in order to cope with immediate danger. Now that I was "safe" it all came flooding back. To escape, I watched TV compulsively, avoiding anything violent—nature shows were my favorites—and I read science fiction. Having lost faith in women as well as men, I was a serious candidate for a species-change operation.
Luckily, at some point in that bleak winter, I read a magazine article on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in Vietnam Vets, and I recognized all my symptoms. I had a name for my suffering, and 1 knew I was not "crazy." I'd felt so much guilt and anger towards myself for not being okay, that is, my old self, since I was "free." Now I knew healing would take time and effort, and I gave myself permission to not be normal right away. Also, seeing how much my condition resembled that of war survivors helped break down some of my denial about the hell I'd been through.
Still, I had no guidance on how to recover from PTSD. I followed only the dimmest instincts. First, I began to read accounts by survivors of any serious trauma. These people became my invisible support group. I found myself drawn especially to stories of political prisoners and concentration camp survivors. Although my experience was not like theirs, these were the people I felt would understand how my will had been sapped and my strengths twisted, how the smallest acts of resistance and mere endurance had needed all my wits and courage. Bruno Bettleheim in his chapters called "Behavior in Extreme Situations" (The Informed Heart) finally answered the question I'd put to myself every 44 hour since my escape: "How could I have been so stupid?" He made me realize that under abuse, especially the combination of intermittent threats, unpredictable violence and constant psychological torture, everyone responds differently, but everyone changes fundamentally, and everyone has their breaking point.
One day as I sat reading at the kitchen table, I looked out the window at the small yard beside our duplex apartment, and I began to imagine growing a garden there in the spring. It seemed like a highly improbable idea: the area was very small, steep, bare of everything but gray shale and orange clay, and the house shaded it part of the day. But the notion of a garden took root strongly. For the first time in several years I had something pleasant to anticipate.
I wrangled my landlady's permission to put in a garden. Then I mailed off postcards for seed catalogs. I persuaded an acquaintance who owned a truck to bring me a load of cedar slabs discarded by a local sawmill, and I used these to construct two frames, about four feet by six feet, and two even smaller ones, just three feet by four feet. By this time Lynn and I had saved enough money to buy a very old VW bug, so we drove to a nearby creekbank and filled bushel baskets with rich bottom dirt, which we dumped into the frames to make raised beds about four inches deep.
To supplement the tiny growing space, Lynn scavenged large cans from the cafeteria of the hospital where she worked. I painted them a hopeful green, filled them with soil and placed them along the sidewalk below our porch. Old-timey "Corn-row Beans," originally bred to tolerate the shade of cornfields, grew up strings tied to the roof and bore prolifically.
I didn't have much money from my SSI income to spend on garden gadgets, so I made do. I wove a trellis for my peas from six-pack rings liberated from a liquor store trash bin. (I can testify that this plastic never biodegrades—the pea fence survives to this day.) I got some more bushel baskets from the local grocery, painted them with non-toxic preservative and lined them with garbage bags after snipping a few drainage holes in the bottom. Placed around a small stone patio above the garden, these became containers for large plants.
The garden rewarded me before the first mouthful of early spinach was harvested. It moved me out of the gloomy apartment and into the sunshine, watering can in hand. It motivated me to interact with people and to occasionally risk asking for help. I found out they would usually say yes. My attention was now focused on the future, not the bitter, unchangeable past. At night when the flashbacks threatened to roll, when I dreaded the dreams I might have, I put myself to sleep with 45 detailed plans of my next crop rotation. I found out I could learn a major new skill, a little at a time. I could do things right, even come up with ingenious solutions to seemingly impossible difficulties. And when I did things wrong, plants were most often forgiving. The plants themselves were a tremendous source of inspiration. Talk about survivors! They defied every book written about their needs, often thriving with too little sun, too little water, and too little soil. At the end of a year, I could easily stick my shovel in the dirt up to the hilt, where only four inches of top soil had previously existed; compost and the action of the roots had created friable loam out of shale and clay.
When I experienced failure with gardening, it was never the kind of disaster I'd grown to associate with mistakes. We didn't go hungry, because other crops outstripped our expectations. My lover didn't beat or berate me, but sympathized and helped. The garden was important to us economically, because we'd both lost almost everything we owned in our escape. Luckily, in southern Arkansas, it's possible to garden yearround. The garden gave me precious, desperately needed tastes of success. Disabled, unemployed, I still felt like an important contributor to the household. I even had food to give away sometimes, and that was a delicious feeling.
Gardening was not the only factor in my recovery, but it was an important one. I didn't grow up with abuse, but battering and similar traumas can expand minutes into hours, years into decades, until four years feel like most of a lifetime. At the end of a year and a half of gardening, I no longer felt as if I'd spent the majority of my life in a battering situation. Healing had acquired a new definition for me: I didn't insist on having the old me back; I'd mourned her long and well. I accepted the fact that some injuries are too severe to be made whole, that I might never be the same again. But I began to actually like and trust the me I am now, scars and all. As my garden taught me, I must make do with what I am. I have discovered that my flaws are not fatal and my successes are greater than I'd hoped for. So far I have not gone hungry, and I even have something to offer."]

It is widely agreed that President Donald Trump's handling of the coronavirus pandemic—his conscious and non-stop lies, his blundering incompetence, and his open disdain for science—has helped lead the U.S. to where it is today: Record-shattering Covid-19 infections, hospitalizations, and deaths and an economy in shambles.
But placing the blame for the disastrous current state of affairs entirely at the feet of Trump risks letting off the hook a more fundamental culprit, namely the conservative anti-government ideology and "free market"-worship at the core of much of the administration's response to the deadly pandemic.
"Conservative leaders refused to marshal the resources of government to actually combat the spread of the disease. Instead, in keeping with their ideology, they wanted to leave it to individuals and the 'free market.'" —Michael Linden, Groundwork Collaborative
That's the argument advanced in a recent essay for Talking Points Memo by Michael Linden and Sammi Aibinder of the Groundwork Collaborative, a progressive policy shop.
Unsatisfied with explanations of the current crisis that posit Trump as the principal cause—a position which suggests that simply removing Trump, as U.S. voters decided to do last month, is the solution—Linden and Aibinder write that "though Donald Trump lost reelection, the ideology and belief system underpinning so many of the debacles of his presidency prevails, and was always doomed to fail the country in the face of a disaster like this one."
"At base, conservative ideology itself was just as responsible for the failure to appropriately and effectively respond to this crisis as Trump's personal failings were," the two argue. "And that ideology will still be present—rife, in fact—in our government long after Trump is gone."
While acknowledging that conservatism is "not homogenous," Linden and Aibinder argue that at the heart of the reactionary ideology is the view that "government itself tends to cause more problems than it solves, and that free markets—unencumbered by government intervention—are always best positioned to allocate resources and improve society."
Adherence to those two positions, according to Linden and Aibinder, is incompatible with an effective response to a pandemic that necessitates coordinated state action to control the spread of the virus, which has now killed more than 273,000 people in the U.S.—the highest Covid-19 death toll in the world.
In contrast with countries like New Zealand and South Korea, where decisive government action helped prevent Covid-19 from running rampant, Linden and Aibinder noted that the U.S. response was plagued by "the conservative belief that government is more often the problem than the solution," which "made it practically inevitable that Republicans would render their own government ineffective."
"Instead of coordinating a national strategy to address the acute shortage of personal protective equipment and vital medical supplies across the country, this administration encouraged state leaders to essentially compete with one another to save their own people," write Linden and Aibinder. "When pressed by state leaders to help solve the PPE shortage, senior White House adviser Jared Kushner replied, 'The free market will solve it.' When asked about the federal government's role in assuring schools are able to resume in-person instruction safely, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos contended that was not her department's job."
The devastating consequences of conservative ideology are also evident in the nation's response, or lack thereof, to the economic crisis that the coronavirus pandemic spawned.
Since Congress in March passed the $2.2 trillion CARES Act—a measure whose most successful elements, such as the federal boost to unemployment insurance and direct cash payments, drew loud GOP backlash—Republican lawmakers have actively opposed efforts to provide any additional stimulus even as the economy remains in deep recession, a predictable and totally preventable outcome of inaction.
As Linden and Aibinder write:
By May, the S&P 500 had recovered 30 percent of its losses, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) declared that additional measures were no longer urgent, despite the fact that the unemployment rate was still almost 15 percent and the economy was still over 20 million jobs in the hole. Months passed, and the stock market continued to recover, while the broader economic recovery stalled. Emergency aid lapsed, job gains have slowed, hunger and precariousness has risen. But so long as the stock market continues to thrive, it is unlikely that conservatives will be moved to address these underlying problems.
Capital primacy not only leads conservatives to disregard real economic challenges, it also leaves them with very few tools to use when they do decide to act. Conservatives tend to rely on tax cuts — especially for the wealthy and corporations—as their primary economic policy lever, and disdain public investments, as well as more direct aid or targeted aid to anyone who is not a "job creator."
Ultimately, Linden and Aibinder argue that while "there is no doubt that as president, Donald Trump stamped his own personal brand of ineptitude on this crisis," the coronavirus pandemic "was the test that conservatism was built to fail."
"A public health crisis that demands a coordinated, powerful public response, leveraging all the power and reach of the federal government, meets an ideology that cannot accept a robust role for the public sector and believes the free market will solve all," the two write. "An incredibly unequal economic crisis driven by a collapse in customers, in which the wealthy are mostly doing fine while everyday people teeter on the brink of generational ruin, meets an ideology that cares only for the prospects of those at the top and sees tax cuts as the only useful economic answer."
In the wake of his victory last month, President-elect Joe Biden promised a more coordinated federal response to the coronavirus crisis and appointed economic advisers who appear willing to buck the conservative deficit dogma embraced—often selectively and hypocritically—by Republicans and Biden's former boss, Barack Obama.
But if Democrats fail to retake control of the Senate by winning the pair of Georgia runoffs set for January 5, Biden's vow to tackle the twin public health and economic crises with bold action could be dramatically hindered by McConnell, who appears hellbent on ensuring that the economic meltdown continues no matter the cost to the increasingly hungry and desperate population.
"So long as the stock market continues to thrive," write Linden and Aibinder, "it is unlikely that conservatives will be moved to address these underlying problems."

“Approaching the compound,” Carol said suddenly. “Get your gear ready, kiddo.”
“I thought I was First Lieutenant,” (Y/N) teased.
Carol snorted. “That’s Monica. You’re Second Lieutenant and you know it.” They shared a laugh before she went serious. “I’ll take down the ship, you find the other Captain and see what you can do.”
“Yes, ma’am,” she said instantly.
They approached the compound sight and zoomed into the fight. Carol went for the ship, as she said, while (Y/N) flew down, using suit modifications that had been made for her, and looked for Captain Rogers.
“Danvers, we could use the assist,” a man said.
She spotted the man of red, white, and blue and landed in front of him, knowing instantly that she was in the right place.
“Captain Rogers?” (Y/N) asked, standing tall with her shoulders back.
“Yeah,” he said with a tilt of his head. “Who’s asking?”
“First Lieutenant (Y/N) (L/N), sir,” she replied, giving a good and proper salute. “Captain Danvers has me at your service.”
He blinked a few times before smiling a little. “Good to meet you, Lieutenant. You’re a little young, huh?”
“I was a Lieutenant with the Kree,” she shrugged. “It’s just kind of an in-joke now, since Carol saved me. Anyway, how can I be of help?”
Rogers nodded and gestured down the field. “One of ours is carrying the stones. We gotta get them safely to an ugly brown van farther that way and send ‘em back to the right year.”
“Got it,” (Y/N) nodded before pressing a hand to her wrist. “Captain, you got that?”
“Loud and clear,” Carol replied over the comms. “Does their carrier happen to be a kid with a mess of brown hair?”
Rogers snorted a little. “That’s him.”
“That’s him. I’m on my way.”
With that, (Y/N) flew off again, wind whipping through her hair as she did. She observed the ground below her as she soared, searching for the kid with messy hair, as Carol had described. She saw him a good distance from the central force of the battle, but he was headed right toward it, as he was supposed to. As she descended to meet him, she watched him get knocked off his feet and fall into the dirt.
“You okay?” (Y/N) asked, rushing over and reaching out a hand to help pull him up.
When he was on his feet again, he nodded slightly, looking at her with slight wonder in his eyes. “Yeah-- yeah, I’m good.”
“I’m (Y/N),” she introduced. As soon as she did, Carol landed next to her with a rumble of the ground. “She’s Carol.”
The boy fumbled for words. “I’m, uh, I’m Peter-- Peter Parker.”
“Hi, Peter Parker,” Carol grinned dorkily. “You got something for us?”
Peter almost shyly passed her the new gauntlet with the stones in it before glancing over at the masses of aliens headed right for them. “Dunno how you’re gonna get it through there alone.”
“Don’t worry,” said a voice. “She’s not.”
Both Peter and (Y/N) were in awe when an entire troop of badass women joined them, weapons tightly in their hands, if they had any. Despite this near army of reinforcements, Carol frowned and looked to her second-in-command.
“C’mon,” she said. “I need back-up.”
(Y/N) raised an eyebrow and glanced at the other women pointedly, but was ignored when Carol took her arm and dragged her forward. Without another word, they were thrown into the battle, barely given a moment to breathe, much less speak.
“Really!?” (Y/N) shouted to her as they flew through the crowds, taking a shot now and then. “The first normal looking, half decent guy we meet and you get protective now?”
“Shut up, Lieutenant, and focus on not dying!”
(Y/N) sighed. “I hate you.”
Carol scoffed, gauntlet tight in her arms. “Please,” she said. “You love me.”
Post Endgame, as Dr Strange had become fond of calling it, Carol instructed (Y/N) to head to the medbay and take care of herself, seeing as she’d been pretty beat up in the battle. But who wasn’t, to be frank?
After a close call with Tony, everyone was shaken. Carol and (Y/N) had barely put together a makeshift device using his suit’s built-in nano technology and their own old Kree rigs on their suits to heal his arm. He’d almost died in his wife’s arms. Luckily, the two were too quick for that.
Peter was particularly shaken by Tony’s near death. When the man gasped for breath for the first time in a good minute, the boy instantly hugged the life out of (Y/N), thanking her through sobs.
Seeing as the compound had been destroyed, there was an emergency aid center set up in the remnants of the battlefield. Those who weren’t as badly hurt could travel home with the help of the wizards. Some of the closer members of the Avengers travelled to the new temporary Avengers base-- which was actually old. Avengers Tower was back in business.
(Y/N) sauntered into the medbay with minor injuries, glancing into recovery rooms as she passed them. Most of them were full of patients who had needed emergency attention, but in the fifth room down, she found a very different person there.
Peter Parker glanced at her briefly, but drew his attention back to the needle in his hand. He was attempting to stitch up a head wound by himself, using only a mirror on a metal tray by his recovery bed. He was failing miserably. When he missed his mark and gasped in pain, (Y/N) stepped into the room.
“Let me help,” she said, approaching.
Without letting him protest, though he seemed too tired to do so, she took the needle and began to stitch himself up herself. Peter had to look up at an odd angle to let her reach his cut, but it gave him the perfect view of (Y/N)’s face as she worked; furrowed eyebrows, bitten lip. She was entirely focused on him.
He had barely muttered a thanks before the work was halfway done.
“So, Peter Parker,” (Y/N) hummed as she continued, “What’s your story?”
“I don’t-- I don’t really have one,” he muttered.
The girl chuckled. “I doubt that. Everybody has a story.”
“Well...I was bitten by a radioactive spider. So I have super strength and can stick to walls.” He told his story as bluntly as he could. “I made a webbing solution and a costume and became Spider-Man, I guess. Then, Mr. Stark made me a suit and let me join the Avengers-- more or less.”
(Y/N) stopped for a second, processing his tale. “Huh,” she said. “I thought I was weird.”
“Yeah?” He asked with a small smile. “What’s, uh, what’s your story?”
“I ran into these aliens when I was little,” she started. “The Skrull. The Kree fought them off and couldn’t wipe my memories of them, so they kidnapped me and turned me into a soldier. I got to First Lieutenant before Carol found me and freed me. I’ve been with her ever since, ‘cause I can’t remember my life on Earth.”
“Wow,” Peter whispered, grimacing slightly as the stitches stung him. “That’s…”
(Y/N) laughed. “Crazy, I know.”
“Not that crazy,” he said in an attempt to make her feel better. “We just beat up a humanoid plum with a bunch of wizards and superheroes.”
She burst into giggles at that, as did he. Her laughter only egged him on and by the time his stitches were in, (Y/N) was red in the face from laughing. This Peter kid was pretty hilarious and he thought she was great. Nobody ever thought he was that funny.
“You’re pretty cool,” he muttered as she went to clean up around his now fully stitched cut. “For somebody who was a soldier in an alien army.”
(Y/N) grinned and shook her head, wiping at his forehead with a damp cloth. “And you’re pretty cool for a high school boy.”
She took the cloth and went to put it away, turning away from Peter. He took a deep breath and bit his lip, probably about to regret what he was going to say. That said, he was gonna do it anyway.
“So, uh, I know this probably the worst time ever,” he said. “But do you wanna get something to eat sometime? With me? I dunno, maybe downtown or something or--”
“I’m not exactly familiar with Earth customs anymore,” she interrupted, smiling to herself before turning back around. “But are you asking me on a date?”
Peter swallowed. “Uh, yeah. Yeah, if you want to…”
(Y/N) gave him a big smile, unable to keep it back at his nervous demeanor. “I’d like that.”
“You-- you would? Really?”
“Definitely,” she nodded. “But I’ll have to escape Carol first. Shes...really protective.”
He laughed a little, nerves finally starting to wear off. “Tell me about it,” he agreed. “I think Mr. Stark would lock me in my room for the rest of my life if he could.”
“Speak of the devil…” (Y/N) suddenly whispered.
They could hear shouting down the hall. From the entrance of the medbay, echoes of two distinct voices reached their ears; one of a very pissy Captain and a less-than-pleased genius. Their parents were essentially arguing. What they didn’t realise was that each of their kids was listening in.
“You keep your Spiderling away from my kid,” Carol huffed.
Tony sputtered. “Yeah, well, keep your space soldier away from my kid.”
“Did you hear that?” Peter gasped, drawing (Y/N)’s attention to him. “He called me his kid!”
She grinned at his pure reaction before glancing out in the hall. She saw them in power stances, completely focused on each other. Smiling to herself, she shrunk back into the recovery room and looked over at her companion.
“Maybe we should go on that date right now,” she suggested.
Peter stammered. “Wh-- what? Like right-- Like right now? Right now?”
“Yeah,” (Y/N) laughed. “Before they inevitably separate us for who knows how long. You in?”
“Oh, I’m definitely in,” he said with a shy smile.
She grinned proudly. “Good, ‘cause I have a terrible, terrible idea. But it’s gonna be hilarious in, like, 5 years.”
“You know what?” Carol huffed. “I’m gonna go get my ‘space soldier’ and we’re gonna leave.”
“Good!” Tony exclaimed as she began to walk away from him and toward the recovery rooms. “Good riddance! You keep her away from my kid, you hear? He’s been traumatized by aliens enough!”
Carol scoffed and shouted back. “She’s human, genius!” She turned away to look into the recovery room and grab her kid, but realised it was empty. “Shit.”
Tony walked up at her lack of argument and looked into the room, having the same realisation. “If she took my boy, I swear to god--!”
“WOOHOO!”
Both heroes whipped around at the exclamation, staring out the massive windows in the tower to see their two wards having the time of the lives. Peter was fully clothed in his Spider-Man gear and had a string of web attached to (Y/N)’s feet as she used her formerly Kree space suit to fly down the street. She pulled him along, laughing her ass off at his mutual amusement.
Meanwhile, their guardians were fuming.
“PETER PARKER, YOU JUVENILE DELINQUENT--!”
“YOU ARE SO GROUNDED, YOU LITTLE SHIT!”
But she and Peter ignored their exclamations.
“Where to, Spider-Man?” She shouted down at him, a silly grin on her face.
He laughed, though it was muffled by the heavy wind. “I know a great shawarma place downtown!”
“What’s shawarma?” (Y/N) asked, tilting her head.
“You haven’t had shawarma!?” Peter gasped, almost offended before laughing loudly. “Oh, we are gonna have so much fun!”

How to Easily backup Outlook emails and other items
What is an email approving?
Approving is a creation of data that can be recovered in case the innovative elements are obliterated or deleted. a step is oft wrong with archiving. The main muzzle of archiving emails is to declutter mailboxes without actually deleting emails and to fund those emails for succeeding use. mail in the depository is not unremarkably accessed on an official cornerstone.
Download Now
Approval, on the added assistance, is a substance of mail covering. Voice solutions guaranteed mail by copying it to hardware. Whenever items are varied, deleted, or imperfect, having their copies gives a chance to regenerate forfeited mail. Or restore earlier versions of documents. The water stop of a duplication is to preclude data exit. Email copies can also be extremely utile in the pillowcase of proceeding.
Overview
When discussing backup up a machine, it can change various opposite meanings. In Windows 7 terms, a soul could run a file approving, make a system appearance, or use grouping rejuvenate. The file voice would only retain documents, images, and new files you designate. A grouping individual is a photo of your entire computer, including installed software and group settings. A file voice is reclaimable for weight your files onto a new machine or a machine with a freshly upgraded operating group. The system icon is much helpful for disaster feat, presumptuous it is ongoing. Patch step picturing is no yearner included in Windows 10, a soul can create a deed mean that essentially serves a similar function. If you would impact, but we give not be masking it in this power. Before making changes to your machine, it is e'er a dandy air to at slightest sustain up the files. It is also an upright training to play up your computer on a rhythmical groundwork. OneDrive is a cloud hardware tool embedded into Windows 10 that can forbear endorse up selected files automatically
The Basics
Options for duplication and deed let file Story, Creating a Retrieval Travel, Group Restore, and Resetting your PC.
OneDrive is darkened storage provided by Microsoft that can be victimized to store files and reach them from any cyberspace application.
OneDrive can be victimized in Windows 10 to automatically make duplicate copies of items on your PC.
Duplicate and Feat Options
The optimum time to opine nearly layer up is when your computer is new or gushing optimally. If you are using Windows 10 on a personalized machine, hump a bit of moment to metamorphose on Group Alter, make a recovery Tool, and set up file. This give put you in a pleasing billet for exploit if anything happens to your files or your PC. The honors two sections beneath agreement History. Cloud backup software
the file provides a way to automatically okay up your files to an extrinsic Tool or meshwork locating every period (or timing you set). It does not poverty to be a devoted This, but it staleness be pledged (physically or virtually) in a visit to confirm up your files. The only caveat is that if a pussy file finds its way only your file account duplicate ram, it has the possibleness to cause problems with the razorback up files.
System Repay
You are probably familiar with the exploit deciding to restore your grouping. step Reestablish creates oscillating snapshots of the computer, and the person can rove the computer stake to a designated doctor in the story. It doesn't vanish files but may uninstall apps/drivers/updates or exchange settings. This option is still usable in Windows 10, and it is the primo bleach to try position if your computer isn't activity aright after a latterly installed app, wood, or update. In most cases, this gift cipher an opening. The conjuration is to illustration out whether the app, utility, or update is malfunctioning or antagonistic with something on your scheme.
Why substantiate up Mercantilism or Express 365 mailboxes?
There is an unsophisticated statement as to why backups are so burning. Accidents befall, files get corrupted, and that is why there is always a construct that several business-critical emails get irrecoverable. Without backups, retrieval of this crucial mail is not affirmable. So why is championship oftentimes unnoticed? It is because organizations do not create what the risks are. And the occurrence almost email backups is that you unremarkably do not increase them unless you impoverishment them - and then it is too latterly.
What are the reasons for email backups? Emails are the guts of the business activity for most companies. Thanks to emails, personalized mail, contracts, invoices and all kinds of key documents can be securely and easily transferred and conveniently stored. Unfortunately, at many shows, all mail can be a theme to unannounced mail modification or disadvantage. email mail can be deleted or vitiated in umteen structure:
- Despiteful software - the cybersecurity market is doing its unexceeded to protect computers from viruses and added spiteful software, but there is ever a seek that a virus takes its sound.
- Unwitting redaction - sometimes, for illustration when a mortal declutters their mailbox, few valuable emails can be deleted by misstatement. If an email is deleted permanently, ofttimes there is no way to retrieve it, else than from a patronage repeat.
- Instrumentation misfunction or group clash - accidents bechance, and sometimes, for no superficial intellect, data stored in emails can get debased beyond improving. It applies both to mail stored on individual computers and email employment providers.
- Wilful redaction - belike nobody likes to believe roughly this alternative, but it is likely for employees to censor burning emails on intention. As a conclusion, they can alteration the uncastrated organization.

weird flex— are you okay??
two days into maybe-olivia’s eat-pray-love-crush-enemy-skulls pillage of cleveland, she’s struck by a migraine so searing that she has enough presence of mind to google psnn hesd dyig strook e ? before she’s left twitching in a trash heap behind starbucks.
two days into maybe-olivia’s eat-pray-love-crush-enemy-skulls pillage of cleveland, she’s struck by a migraine so searing that she has enough presence of mind to google psnn hesd dyig strook e ? before she’s left twitching in a trash heap behind starbucks.
it’s still light out when her brain stops trying to design, manufacture, and detonate it’s own atomic bomb. maybe-olivia isn’t sure if it’s been three hours or three days. the double chocolate chip frappe she bought t-minus five to blackout (ha!) has solidified on her pants. she can taste seafoam under her tongue.
she stares up at the sky in muted exhaustion.
god, it’s me, she thinks. i would like to invoke my right to choose.
perhaps if the zygote tube had been pro-choice, none of this would be fucking happening.
the lizard takes over all executive functioning at that point, forcibly ejecting her from the drivers seat. when she blinks down at her shirt it’s neon green and has a fun i love chicago! written across a black skyline.
maybe-olivia wonders if she saw the blue bedroom and doesn’t remember it. hopefully the lizard wrote it in the unicorn book.
not that it matters. what’s another forgotten thing in the grand scheme of it all? it’s a fifty-fifty shot she’ll remember anything she’s written in the notebook, anyway. her memory is half a step above melted swiss cheese.
from that point on, every decision is like russian roulette with a gun that’s fully loaded. maybe-olivia has no fucking idea what’s going to set her spinning into a migraine or send her flying off the realm of human existence or remind her, hey, she fucking loves macaroons. it’s a lot of calculated risks and maybe-olivia discovers that she’s very bad at math.
it goes on like this for an indeterminable amount of time.
she tries to balance her world-wide assassination tour with her brain’s need to self-destruct every seventy-three seconds. it is difficult.
after the act of dying her hair a soft brown sends her tripping into a panic attack, shivering violently and puking all over the nice bathroom of the vacation home she’s squatting in, maybe-olivia decides this isn’t working.
the unicorn notebook is full, so maybe-olivia unpacks the glittery purple one she bought to replace it. the pen that lights up was lost somewhere in bolivia so she has to settle for a fatter pen that holds four different wells of ink. she feels traitorous for liking it more than its predecessor.
option 1:
die.
honestly, this is the easiest and most cost-effective route. at this point she’s ninety-five percent sentient machine gun. there wouldn’t be much lost. blackout was set to be decommissioned after operation foxtrot anyway. maybe-olivia would just be finishing what was set into motion a long time ago.
she switches the pen into the blue inkwell and sets up a t-chart.
pros:
no more migraines.
won’t wake up in romanian hostel.
stop randomly puking.
permanently get rid of lizard.
cons:
maybe-oliva sits back in the chair. this list is marginally harder.
agency is exhausting and confusing. some days she’s completely post-verbal and other days she can only speak argentinian spanish, despite having no memories related to argentina. some days she physically can’t wake her body up for more than six minutes at a time. most days she throws up everything she tries to eat.
maybe-olivia wishes she was strapped back into her holding cell in the unnamed facility, twelve floors below the earth.
this transforms her body into a wet chihuahua. it takes four hours to pull her bones back inside her skin and another two just to get off the floor.
jesus, she thinks, and adds keep bones in skin to the pros list.
she ruminates on her death for a bit, losing time to daydreaming about the endless sleep that might await her. none of her training covered the afterlife so this is as much a guess as everything else in her life. maybe it’s an endless blank void. maybe it’s burning in a pit. maybe it’s a another shot. maybe-olivia hopes not. she doesn’t know if her spirit can handle another go-round of this.
but, her brain lizard pipes up, then they would win!
maybe-olivia growls out loud and pointedly tells it to shut the fuck up even if she begrudgingly admits that it has a point.
if she dies, then director howard lives.
this alights something hot deep in her gut. it feels like she has to puke and run fourteen miles at the same time. there’s no way in hell marcus fucking howard gets to live over her. fuck that. fuck that.
and really, doesn’t she deserve that? doesn’t she deserve the right to drag howard out of his villa safehouse, shove a piece of rubber in his mouth, break all his fingers, and ask what her real goddamn name is?
project sisyphyus has been trying to kill her— the real her— for eleven fucking years and they still haven’t gotten it done. she wins, they lose. they’ll have to try harder.
she writes fuck that in the scrawling, bunched together lettering she’s beginning to associate with her own personal handwriting. it’s nice. it feels like she owns something.
fuck that.
if they want me dead, they better fucking find me.
option 2:
get it the fuck together
there are no cons to this. she doesn’t need a t-chart.
getting it together proves to be a con all on it’s own. her brain is a glorified vegetable but it’s all she’s got. it’s not like she can swap it out for a new one. it needs serious repairs though, and short of hooking her scalp up to a car battery, maybe-olivia isn’t sure how to go about this.
google is, though.
and google doesn’t care if she has to look something up four times an hour. it points her towards helpful websites. searching how do i get my memories back and following it with who the fuck am i six times in half as many hours points her to a self-help thread which leads her to a diagnosis forum. she has acute brain trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, dissociative episodes, panic attacks, and sometimes seizures. also, maybe arthritis. she has to ask google what dissociation means.
maybe-olivia is struck with the overwhelming knowledge that other people know what she’s going through. there are other people who fell head first out of a plane with no parachute and have been hurtling towards the ground for as long as they can remember. sure, they haven’t been tortured and brainwashed and denied the basic human rights that are allocated pretty much across the board but she doesn’t care. she feels connected to these people who live half outside of their skin, wondering the earth like zombies chewed up in the garbage disposal.
they teach coping strategies. ways to fake normal existence so that it seems like they’re living in the same reality as everyone else. how to breathe when her lungs collapse. how to avoid physical contact in day-to-day situations.
a lot of them gently suggest finding creative outlets for her feelings. she tries writing but after penning an expansive four page letter in cantonese only to suddenly forget how to read cantonese, she gives that up.
she decides she isn’t really ready to sift through her emotions. her bodies fucked up instincts are enough without trying to decide if she’s depressed, furious, or anxious on top of it.
google assures her that recovery happens in stages and at her own pace. if you aren’t ready today, try a little bit more tomorrow.
her brain still jerks her around like it’s the worlds most aggressive dog owner and she’s the runt of a teacup poodle’s litter, but it works to her advantage. no one can track her if even she has no idea where she’s going next. the targets come in migraines, in hallucinations, in dissociative fits, but they come and maybe-olivia dutifully follows, even if she can’t remember doing it. it’s admittedly a reckless strategy but if there’s a part of her that isn’t a screaming disaster then she hasn’t recovered that part yet.
she reviews her notebooks every few days, now. they look like they’ve been written by at least four people, one of them being a small child. there’s a variety of languages, handwriting styles, codes, and small illustrations. one page just says fuck licorice in increasingly bold font, fiercely underlined and surrounded by aggressive exclamation points.
it doesn’t do much except reaffirm that she has the minimal amount of control required to be a human being, but that’s okay.
a lot of her problems sort themselves out once a helpful blog post points out that she’s eating about a third of what’s required of adult women. this is mostly because she constantly throws up anything that tastes more flavorful than wheat bread but also because she’s never really had to feed herself before. hunger is just another loud, shrieking signal her body sends at her to inform her that something’s wrong, but it sends fifty of those a minute. how’s she supposed to know where the problem is?
a steady combination of pedialyte, muscle milk, and a bottle of gummy vitamins becomes the solution. she has to set alarms to remind herself to drink them and it isn’t ideal, but it keeps her caloric intake up, and solves the arthritis issue.
it also makes it easier to actually keep the memories she recovers which is a huge win.
that doesn’t mean things are smooth by anyone’s standards, including her own. random things still absolutely kneecap her— a dad yelling at his son, a lawn mower starting up outside the motel, her own abilities blinding her first thing in the morning. but every incapaciting moment gives a clue.
a car backfires on the road and maybe-olivia darts behind a minivan, seeing both the tan metal under her hand and white sand beaches.
239948S462569W
maybe-olivia has never infiltrated a fully-staffed enemy facility on her own before. that’s alright. it can be a learning experience for everyone.

Corporate Information Security - Is Our Information More Secure
For employees of Turner & Owen located on the 21st Floor of One Liberty Plaza, right across from the North World Trade Center Tower, the morning of September 11th 2001 began as any other. Everyone heard a loud explosion, and the building shaken as if it was shaking. The sky was filled with debris.
They didn't know what was happening and immediately fled the building. This was thanks to the systematic practice evacuation drills. All files and computer systems had to be removed. One Liberty Plaza was smashed to pieces, with its top ten floors twisted. Turner & Owen offices were also destroyed.
Turner & Owen IT staff had made backup tapes of their computer system regularly, but they were sent to a company division located in the South World Trade Center Tower. They were destroyed when the South Tower collapsed. Knowing they had to recover their case databases or likely go out of business, Frank Turner and Ed Owen risked their lives and crawled through the structurally-unstable One Liberty Plaza and retrieved two file servers with their most critical records. Owen & Turner's law firm was able to resume their work in less than two weeks after receiving this information.
Other companies were unable to recover the information that was lost in this disaster.
What has changed?
You might expect that businesses will make significant improvements to their protection of employees, assets and data years after such a catastrophic loss of life, property, and information. Many people were surprised at how slow the changes have been. One anonymous information security professional says that some organizations should have been given a wakeup call but ignored it.
One look at some trends over the years after September 11th shows signs of positive change, although there is still a need for information security advancements.
Federal Trends
Federal government has seen the most significant changes in information security since September 11, 2001. A variety of Executive Orders and Acts, Strategies and New Departments, Divisions and Directorates have focused on protecting America’s infrastructure, with a heavy focus on information security.
One month after 9/11, President Bush signed Executive Order 13231 ("Critical Infrastructure Protection in the Information Age") which created the President's Critical Infrastructure Protection Board. The National Strategy for Homeland Security was released by President Bush in July 2002. It called for the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security, which would oversee initiatives to prevent, detect and respond to chemical, biological and radiological (CBRN), weapons attacks. In November 2002, the Homeland Security Act was passed.
Tom Ridge, Secretary of Homeland Security, released two strategies in February 2003: "The National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace," designed to "engage, empower Americans to protect the portions of cyberspace they own, operate or control or with which they interact" and "The National Strategy for the Physical Protection of Critical Infrastructures & Key Assets", which "outlines the guiding principle that will underpin all our efforts to secure the assets and infrastructures that are vital to our national security and governance as well as our economy, safety and health.
The National Cyber Security Division (NCSD), and the Critical Infrastructure Assurance Office, were also created under the Department of Homeland Security's Information Analysis and Infrastructure Protection Directorate (IAIP). The NCSD's top priority was to establish a Cyber Security Tracking, Analysis and Response Center. This follows a key recommendation from the National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace.
One might expect that there would be an impact on private sector information security practices given all the activity at the federal level in relation to the Federal Strategy to Secure Cyberspace. The National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace has received a lukewarm response. Many critics focused on the lack of regulations and incentives, funding, or enforcement. Information security professionals seem to believe that without strong laws and leadership at federal level in information security, the practices of protecting our nation's vital information will not change significantly.
Industry Trends
The private sector is seeing a growing interest in sharing security-related information with other organizations and companies, but it does so anonymously. This trend seems to be on the rise. An organization can join one of the dozen or so industry-specific Information Sharing and Analysis Centers. ISACs collect alerts, perform analysis, and notify of physical and cyber threats and vulnerabilities. They notify the public and private sectors about security information that is necessary to protect crucial information technology infrastructures, businesses, individuals, and companies. ISAC members have access to analysis and information relating to other members' information, including information Qnap Colombia obtained from the US Government, law enforcement agencies, technology suppliers, security associations like CERT.
The President Clinton's Presidential Decision Directive 63 (PDD 63) on critical infrastructure protection encouraged ISACs to form a few years before 9/11. The Bush administration continues to support ISAC formation to collaborate with the PCIPB/DHS.
ISACs are available for almost all major industries, including the IT-ISAC which is for information technology and the FS-ISAC which is for financial institutions. There's also the World Wide ISAC that covers all industries. As many organizations realize that ISAC membership helps them fulfill their duty to protect sensitive information, the number of ISAC members has risen rapidly over the past few years.
One of the most important lessons from 9/11 was that disaster recovery and business continuity (BC/DR), plans must be strong and regularly tested. "Business continuity planning has gone from being a discretionary item that keeps auditors happy to something that boards of directors must seriously consider," said Richard Luongo, Director of PricewaterhouseCoopers' Global Risk Management Solutions, shortly after the attacks. BC/DR has shown a return on investment, and many organizations have paid great attention to ensuring their business and information are recoverable in the face of disaster.
A growing focus has also been placed on risk management solutions and how these can be applied to budgeting and ROI requirements for businesses. There are more risk management products and books than ever before. Some of the growth in this field can be attributed legislation such as HIPAA, GLBA and Sarbanes Oxley. However, 9/11 was a significant event that prompted people to start to think about risks and vulnerabilities and what they should do to manage them.
Technology Trends
While most companies understood the importance of monitoring their networks 24x7 before 9/11, it was a top priority after that event. Companies are increasingly implementing intrusion detection (IDS) systems, including host and network intrusion detection system (NIDS), solutions. A 2003 Global Security Survey conducted by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu found that 85 percent of respondents had installed intrusion detection systems. These systems can be costly and require a lot of staff time and money. Some companies have turned to managed security service providers (MSSPs), to monitor their networks. Many MSSPs offer clients advanced notice of potential threats they may have detected while monitoring other networks.
Due to the rampaging viruses and worms such as Slammer and other viruses, patch management, change management, and configuration management technology solutions have been elevated in priority within corporate risk management initiatives. There are many tools and applications that can address the patch, change and configuration management needs. However, it is difficult to choose the right tool for each environment.
Information security personnel don't have the time or resources to go through all of the threat alerts and vulnerability alerts for every possible platform combination. Intelligent threat analysis is another emerging information security technology trend. This service provides customized threat and vulnerability alerts to clients' specific environments.
What is still needed to change
Notable information security improvements in industry, government and technology are evident. But where can we improve?
Information security experts believe that if the government wants to protect critical information, it must pass sensible laws. Bruce Schneier, founder and CTO at Counterpane Internet Security, Inc., says, "Make companies liable if they commit insecurities, you'll be amazed how quickly things become more secure."
Information security managers must do a better job communicating to CEOs and boards of director how the company should protect its data. Mark Sunday, CIO at Siebel Systems, says that while corporate boards are more informed than ever about security issues, they still don’t fully understand them. Most boards won’t be willing to finance things they don’t understand. Sunday stated that, despite being more aware than ever of security issues by CEOs and boards, spending has not increased in this area in the same proportion as people expected.
There is advanced information security technology that isn’t well-known or widely used in the mainstream. Jim Reavis (editor of CSOinformer) says that our technology is too signature-based. He is also an analyst in the information security industry. "We are only ready to fight the final battle. We must be more predictive. We must use more behavioral technology."
Conclusion
A survey was conducted by RedSiren Technologies Inc., the National Association of Manufacturers, and the Internet Security Alliance. It was one year since September 11th 2001. 40 percent of the respondents said that information security is more important than before September 11. Nearly one-third of respondents said that their companies are not equipped to handle an attack on their computers networks. According to the survey, "many organizations need a review of how security threats, risks and costs are identified and managed."

Ayurvedic Tips and Tricks to Manage Meltdowns
You are out acquiring groceries and your young child determines to have a full-blown temper tantrum right there in the center of the store, full with hysterical sobbing, pouty face, as well as flaying limbs. What is a moms and dad to do in a situation like this?
The reality is meltdowns can take place in numerous forms to numerous children. According to Ayurveda, the old recovery knowledge from India, there are three primary kinds of individualities, and various ways of managing them when they are having a scream-fest with you. Here is your blueprint on the best ways to manage disasters as explained in Dharma Parenting by Dr. Ketih Wallace as well as Dr. Fred Travis.
Step 1: Inspect in with yourself and your child
It's crucial that you initially sign in with yourself. Take a deep breath and matter to ten. Decrease and also shift equipments to ensure that you are not reactive. Quickly evaluate if you run out equilibrium. Are you starving and also short-tempered? Did you obtain sufficient rest last evening? Are you emotional because of a second occasion? Know thyself, and whatever else ends up being that a lot easier. After that inspect in with your child. Ask on your own if they obtained enough remainder, food, or what can be the cause of the outburst. Consider their brain/body types as well as exactly what tosses them off balance.
According to Dr. Wallace, there are 2 primary dosha kinds which might be more problematic.
For Vatas: They wonder and also all-natural explorers. If their brain is not occupied they could feel trapped as well as bored. Provide something various or keep them relocating to avoid disappointment and also over emotionality. Vatas are worrywarts when out of balance as well as this could show up as anxiety attacks or rage loaded with tears.
For Pittas: If dishes are skipped or if it's also warm, these children will certainly blow up, hostile as well as start throwing punches. The quickest solution-- gelato! The coolness will calm the pitta fire. A good preventative action is to always lug protein bars for when cravings strikes. Dress them in layers so you could cool their bodies quickly if the shop is as well warm.
Step 2: Comfort your child
No matter why your child is distressed, let them recognize right away that you sustain them. Give them a large hug and also allow them understand you are there for them which whatever will be okay. You individuals will certainly figure it out together. In moments like this, Dr. Wallace notes, your child does not have a secure center yet you can supply the grounding that is needed with the love in your voice and touch.
Step 3: Change your kid's mind state
When your youngster is having a crisis, the sensible component of their mind closes down as well as the psychological kicks right into equipment. They might not also listen to or process just what you are saying because they are so overwhelmed. You have to transform their brain-state by changing the inequality of components. Attempt unzipping the pitta kid's coat to cool them, or find some crafty activity for your vata kid, or let your kapha youngster playing around. Kickbacks with treats could also prove to be helpful!
Move them physically to a various location. Maybe the environment is as well loud or agitating. Yet do this comfortably, without abuse or shouting, understanding that you can not really communicate with them up until they have actually calmed down and changed their brain state. Once they have actually relaxed down, you can inquire just how they really feel. Maybe also inquire to rate their rage on a range of 1-10. It constantly assists to damage the stress with a joke!
Step 4: Give choices
Another method that Dr. Wallace recommends is that once your youngster is soothed down, enable them to earn choices. Ask, "should we finish buying or go residence?" Or if you must complete shopping after that ask, "should we begin with the pasta aisle or the produce?" Or you might divert their interest to a non-triggering subject and ask them questions concerning college or their friends.
Step 5: Enforce consequences
Hopefully, many thanks to the previous steps your youngster has actually learned just how to relax without things obtaining also unpleasant. Nonetheless if the disaster has come to be volcanic then you need to offer effects. Offer them a choice to soothe down and leave the shop together. If they refuse, explain matter-of-factly that there are repercussions, yet be clear that it's not a penalty. The vital thing is for the consequences to be prompt as well as appropriate.
Step 6: You're the coach
Coaching does not just take place in the video game, however before as well as after. Similarly, do not inform your kid about their brain/body enters the center of a crisis. Before and also after, discuss to them how they can remain in equilibrium and also what to avoid. Dr. Wallace states, that for little ones, you could just claim points like "if you avoid in the sun too long, you always fume. When this happens, attempt going to the color as well as having some water to cool off." After a crisis has taken place, review the events with your youngster and also clearly discuss why you enforced the consequences you picked. Do not lecture as well as permit your kid to have self-reflection without sense of guilt or embarassment. Excellent parenting means motivating your kid to do better as well as reinforcing positive behavior.
As a coach/parent, you must constantly remain sharp and also take note. Intervene early if you sense a crisis is on the method and also provide your kid your wholehearted interest. Also if you are in the middle of making supper, you could shut off the oven for a minute and also give a fast hug and state," I recognize you are distressed as well as I wish to help you function this out. When we finish dinner, can we speak about this?"

Forget about that Yurio
Translated from Spanish with the permission of the original author: gemini in tauro. (Thanks Sweetie!)
Title: Forget about that Yurio.
Disclaimer: I don’t know the name of the creator (since I’m still not interested a lot in the series), but I do know that Yuri! On Ice does not belong to me.
Comments directed to Princesa Andrmeda: Since your birthday is coming in two months and I have to give you something, I’ll give you something from the fandom that still gives me the oogie, so you can see just how much I appreciate you. I suppose you’ve already guessed where the title came from?
However, your condition for writing my Edward/Herman was that I read a Victurio, and I didn’t want the lemon so… well, here is my solution. I hope you enjoy your early birthday since I won’t give you anything physical because I’m stingy and… bye!
Fair warning: Like around 80% of Victurio fanfiction, this one won’t be “sugar n’ spice n’ everything nice”, and this is actually the first time I have written such sensitive subjects… on full. If necessary, please refresh the browsing window.
Fair warning II: Since I haven’t read anything of these two, nor seen the series, it is somewhat (very) possible I wrote them Out Of Character.
Forget about that Yurio
《 The same night whitening the same trees.
We, of that time are no longer the same.》
—Tonight I Can Write The Saddest Lines; Pablo Neruda .
Viktor Nikiforov entered tripping into the emergency room. It wasn’t very often he received news that had Yuri and the hospital linked, and so something in his brain balanced it quickly and made him overreact. As fast as the traffic jam had allowed him to arrive the place, taking huge breaths, looking to fill his lungs as he paid the cab driver and enter still running.
“Tell me in which room is he! ” He demanded, in a trembling mix of Japanese and his much accentuated mother tongue. Seeing him enter, with his disheveled hair and the mad look in his eyes, it would’ve made anyone just roll their eyes and pass him by as they deemed him insane. Nonetheless, the reception lady, who so happened to be learning foreign languages and having decided for the one to belonged to a famous person, had managed to understand him, and so she pointed out to him, with the utmost respect possible (Japanese overall), that he would have to wait a couple more hours in the hospital, due to the fact that the operation was yet to be done.
Hence you see him waiting.
What a pity he had wasted three hours of his life.
He hadn’t gone home immediately. Anyone could’ve predicted that.
And whilst he drowned emotions —which were idiotic, really, they took the fun out of everything he did. He could just imagine what he would be able to do had he not have such a huge ego, a slim figure to take care of and a small leftover of dignity… those three tied him up— in the first sake he managed to find —a bar was a couple of blocks away from the hospital, they apparently sold and lived good— he was going over and over again repeating the very same words of the doctor.
He wasn’t dead, no. Yurio was still alive, though unconscious. His mind had skipped all the technical stuff that he had yet to understand —and would probably never understand anyways— from the medical area and went directly to his keywords.
Apparent sleep. Zero activity on the left area of the brain.
Coma.
Not knowing whether his head was spinning from going so many times over those words or from such an enormous intake of alcohol, he passed a hand through his hair, he passed a hand though his hair, and gently tried to comfort himself, saying that he was acting wrongly, that his me from before, that ungrateful brat, would feel embarrassed to see him there, drink in hand, and he sighed.
Arriving to his apartment, he said hi to Makkachin, and Makkachin said hi to him too, eager to see his owner was back already. Viktor greeted him, not cheery in the very least. At seeing his owner’s state, the dog did the same, and tilted his head, confused.
Viktor didn’t think about it for too long, and decided that he would go directly to sleep. In the morning he would have the price of two sake bottles luring over his head, though at this rate it couldn’t feel good.
No, he couldn’t feel. Not even when the Swiss razor —quite an expensive birthday gift, exotic and of good taste… most of the time— had slashed through the flesh in his arm. He was pretty sure the color inside his bathroom would never be this pristine white again.
“Viktor-san… I received the message from Yuri telling me to… Viktor-san!”
And right after Yuuri had seen the disaster that he had made in his bathroom —poor white tiles, he would miss them— he had fallen into blissful nothing, dark and cold, just as he expected to.
Oh, how he would’ve wanted it to last.
He woke up hours later (though it felt like just seconds), with a strong smell of antiseptic, white lights blinding him and the loud beeping noise of the monitor, the one that checked the supposed beating of his heart, that at this very moment only lived with mechanical movements.
He would’ve liked to stay that way longer. The light was too brilliant and reality too dark.
What made him retreat from that peace that he had just found, was a tongue, raspy and full of drool and love. He pretended to be asleep for a few more seconds, even if the dog drool was starting to turn itchy. That had alerted the figure in the couch, who seemed to be glad his idol was still alive.
He would’ve liked for it not to be that way. He was pretty sure he would’ve left Makkachin in pretty competent hands, ain’t that right, Makkachin?
When the doctor, some Asaho Miyamoto —it was always the same thing with these Japanese guys, there was a Yama, there was a Moto, it was oh very obvious they loved hiking and books (there was a reason one of the characters that named the country was that of books)— arrived the room and explained to him that despite the fact that he was still alive, had Yuuri gotten to his apartment a few minutes later, he wouldn’t be there, with all the blood loss and all those technicalities that his brain decided to block yet again, Yuuri was still a newbie in all this, he thought, whilst he saw the guy nodding with energy and responded everything he said. Miyamoto- sensei said he would be let out when they considered he was no longer prone to have another “accident” like the one he just did, which would have to be approved by the psychiatric the hospital had —take a wild guess… he was named Tanaka (he must be one of those weirdoes of rice and swords, he could be sure of it).
He agreed, and the doctor bid him goodnight saying the nurse (whose name started with something… akin to tree) had his dinner. No razor-sharp cutlery, you know, only those plastic, made-for-children ones, really cheap at that too and so horribly big and annoying.
The dish in question was made out of red bean that according to what they said helped to the recovery of the so-called red-cells, but in that moment, sunk into its own juice along with a small dosage of salt and, he was sure, some sugar, gave his body an overwhelming sense of abandonment, that ran through all the arteries, veins and blood vases available in his body, in the same amounts as his blood. Who would’ve said that biology and philosophy were such great friends. Viktor couldn’t be sure, since the inside structure of the body was not really his forte and he failed every single letter in a poem.
Night had arrived, Yuuri said he couldn’t stay with him (compromises with whomever-he-was-with-at-the-moment-and-whose-identity-was-unknown) and said goodbye, sneaking Makkachin out along with him, promising to feed him in the morning. Viktor smiled, pretending that the Japanese had taken a great weight off his shoulders.
When the curfew arrived, Viktor was already into the fifth depth of sleep. Well, something like that. He changed depths. Now the first, now the fifth. Now resting, now staring at the ceiling. He had seen so many flaws within the white concrete that night that he would give a huge list to whoever was in charge of repairing the building.
Hours passed, and all his restlessness had made itself present in the form of insomnia and hyperactivity, he decided opening his eyes. Hardly, he had managed to get his hands over his head (and that would make the IV get out, but who cared anyway?), managing to find a more comfortable position to be in, and he smiled, somewhat void.
After some time of being in that same position, he turned his face to where a shadow was lurking, whom he recognized instantly, his blond hair had no comparison, his gaze a little dry and his skin seemed to glow. After staring a little, he returned his gaze to the ceiling and let out a condescending chuckle; a glas wen invading his face.
“Dear god… I must be losing my head, am I not, Yurotchka?”
The figure on the other side of the room didn’t laugh along with him —and he hadn’t expected it to, it wouldn’t have been his Yuri if he had—, instead turned to stare at him, so quietly that Viktor almost feared it was a hologram placed there by the doctors. To complain, he let out another condescending laugh—ah, how he hated it.
After a few minutes where there only the remnants of Viktor´s (now awkward) laugh could be heard; he decided to clear his throat. “Since I suppose this is a hallucination, might as well use it to my advantage. How have you been in your coma, Yurotchka?”
Yuri didn’t answer. Instead, walked a couple more steps to get closer to him, and Viktor felt that his heart could beat out of his chest at any moment. And not in the sense that he welcomed his closeness, but dreaded it to some extent, though he wasn’t quite sure if he liked that constriction in his chest.
“What makes you think that I am him?” He answered, the words had gotten out so serene from his lips, almost languidly so, that Viktor did not believe it possible that one person have such an aura that professed tranquility in itself, but that at the same time made him sick to the stomach and made him want to get away from him, as he approached the bed. “I’m your guide, Nikiforov Viktor, and there are people who wish harm to fall upon you by their own means.”
The person in the bed’s eyes widened, astonished. Though his unconscious was telling him to get away, that that creature could be one of those, the ones they said, that wished him harm. But neither his legs nor any other part of his body seemed to obey him, instead, he had sat and waited for him to come close.
“Are you” Viktor trailed off, one hand nearing that angelical, almost see-through face that was in front of him, and he became surprised as that same hand passed through his cheek, but, unlike all beliefs there were about ghosts (if he was one, that is), being his hand inside that plasma, he felt a warmth sensation filling him “…real?”
“Regularly, us guides, we adopt the image of someone close to whom we are supposed to protect, so that they will not feel scared upon seeing us.” Yuri did not seemed fazed by the fact that Viktor could go through his cheek. “There are times in which the person does not recognize us, because we protect them since childhood. But in your case… well, you hadn’t really needed protection… until more recent dates… I suppose you remember them, do you not?”
Viktor stopped paying attention to his hand that was between Yuri’s cheek and teeth. He stared at his bed, for a few seconds, embarrassed and nodded. “…of course I do…”
“I said it already and I do not plan on repeating it, Nikiforov Viktor,” Yuri went on again, this time staring at him with a mix of worry and fury. “What you were about to do wasn’t the smartest way to go about it. There are whom desire you, and I am no longer referring to those on the human world; they were dangerously close to achieving it were it not for the help of Katsuki Yuuri.”
“Yuri…”
The blond shook his head. “Nikiforov Viktor, many of my kind believe that you are not deserving of my protection, and after witnessing such attempt you did a few hours ago… I do not believe so either.” How could it be that he was able to be serene and at the same time, contain the fury of the 7 dark princes, contain God’s wrath, His holy punishment… all with only changing the tone those last five words had been spoken in? “I have favors to repay, however, so I find myself deprived from making that decision, and therefore must remain by your side, until the moment your soul has reached the time to part.”
Viktor gave a bursting, condescending laugh, there had been too much condescendence in only one night. “And now what? Are you going to tell me there is a paradise up there? That God waits for me to reach His side, never to leave it?”
“God only exists if you so wish to believe in him.” The figure answered, and even if the tone he was using couldn’t be classified as defensive, the gaze that Yuri was directing to Viktor looked more like a threat than an answer. “Unfortunately, it is not the same deal with demons. It is way easier to see them within people, than seeing those who have light inside them.”
“Way too deep coming from a creature willing to protect me,” he mumbled quietly to himself. “Yuri, listen, I…”
“Forget about that Yuri Plisetsky, Nikiforov Viktor. Forget about him.”
“But…”
“Or at least,” he interrupted again, “forget that I am him.”
Viktor started thinking. If it had been Yuri —his Yuri— by this point surely he would be already yelling, probably the same things (that he would forget about him, that he would not see him again), but he wouldn’t have that creepy aura around him, that seemed to consume everything inside the room, be it good or bad. It wouldn’t be warm touching him, it would be colder than his beloved Russia, his skin would not be shining, or at least not in the supernatural way this Yuri did—though it would also be a supernatural being’s one, thus that one objection did not fit in the frame at all.
“But… why?” His hands were damp, and his cheeks were two tear cascades. He belatedly realized it, the fact that he didn’t want to accept it.
“I was asked to protect you, as a favor to repay, but this is more than enough.”
“You,” he sniffled, he didn’t understand where those tears had come from, maybe a secondary effect of paranormal encounters, “the guides, do you only adopt the figure of… dead people, or could it also be of the quick?”
“If you had not known the answer to that, then you would not be expressing such razliubit.”
Viktor tried to smile, even though his lips had cracked into a grimace that explain all the things the face in front of him couldn’t.
Yuri sighed, and with one of his hand, cupped his cheek. Viktor felt his breathing come to a halt, surprised that he was able to touch him but he couldn’t touch him back, and saw in his eyes an all too familiar glimpse.
“The person who sent me, Nikiforov Viktor, asked me a last favor, something for you to remember them by,” Viktor didn’t understand it pretty well, even after those lips, so forbidden, so angelical, so glorious, softly pressed against his, so mortal and unsavory,
He had barely taken in the situation, the kiss had already ended, Viktor, as if getting out of a daze, had his eyes widened and observed Yuri , who stared back, as if inspecting the reaction of a really unstable experiment. Viktor felt his lips pucker slightly, not enough to be noticeable, but enough to send Yuri the signal that he had understood.
“Tell them that their gift is more than appreciated, to whoever sent you,” he answered, and he thought he had never felt so in peace with himself… with the world, the demons and angels inside him.
He couldn’t remember much of what happened the night after their encounter. He was pretty sure that the light coming from every single millimeter in the room was overwhelming, not like it was a new thing; he could listen to Yuuri coming and going to tell him good morning and to mention that doctor Miyamoto, as well as many of the nurses that had to tend to him because the alarm had activated, apparently his IV had gotten out.
“You know, Viktor-san? If it hadn’t been for Yuri’s message I wouldn’t have made it in time.” Viktor stopped pretending he was fine and started at Yuuri, confused. “Speaking of, how has he been lately?”
Viktor didn’t have the opportunity to answer, Miyamoto-sensei entered the room and said good morning, asked him if he had problems sleeping at night and if he needed everything.
“I just need one thing,” the doctor nodded and awaited for the order to come, “if I’m not mistaken, this is the same hospital where Yuri is, isn’t it?”
“Indeed, Mr. Nikiforov, though I suppose a visit to patient Plisetsky would not be the most adequate thing in your state and what we are striving in this institution is…”
“I’m not talking about that, Miyamoto-sensei.”
“Huh?” Yuuri frowned his brow, unknowledgeable in regards of the situation. “Hospitalized? What do you mean?”
“Then, Mr. Nikiforov? What is it that your want?” Inquired the man.
“He’s suffering, and it pains me to see him in such state, I plead you to unplug him.” Yuuri stared incredulous, but dared not say a thing. The doctor looked curious, and then nodded.
“We received a call from his parents at dawn. We already had their permission but were not sure if you wished to know.”
The months flew by, and Viktor had learned to live with the spontaneous apparitions of Yuri . There were times where months could go on without a single trace, and others where on full weeks he was woken up by him in the middle of the night, daily, to find him to a small distance to him, saying he did that to make others know he was protecting him. And even though Viktor couldn’t see them (he did not have some super sense that let him know it) he believed him, because he was his guide. And that’s what guides were for, right?
It had been four months since the last time he had seen him. He touched his hair a little nervous, it was a little below the shoulders, even if he had tied it in a ponytail. He sighed, and in it he could appreciate the low temperature in the weather. Oh, how he had missed his beloved Russia.
Since he had arrived from Japan a week ago, upon arriving he had breathed in and had said so beautifully in his accentuated language I’m finally home.
After a couple of minutes of observing the establishment he decided to enter.
Despite everything that he had expected, it was warmer on the inside than the outside, and even if it came as a surprise, he couldn’t help but smile thankful.
He had no idea how much time had passed, with his skates echoing in the stadium, so big like his conscience and so void like his chest; but there was a moment, when he was able to see him again. After some long four months, he saw him again. Smiling like someone who just saw an old and longed friend, he saw him from the other side of the court and made him some gestures that he was coming over. In a matter of seconds —bless acceleration and gravity, things that he did understand— he was leaning on the railing.
“It’s good to see you again,” the other one nodded, and got close to him, so Viktor would no longer have to yell.
“There has not been anyone out there lately with plans to take you, so there was really no necessity for me to handle the situation,” he said, as if that explained completely his four-month absence. Viktor didn’t say anything to it, it was true that he hadn’t been assigned to him originally, so he could only thank that he was there, now. “As of now, there is only someone here that wishes something from you.”
“Are you kidding? And what would they want from me?” He imagined demons, those out of French or American videogames, great horns, half-goat half-human, grotesquely disfigured and arms so little they might as well be T-rex’s.
“They are on the other side of the stadium,” he declared, self-assured it was this way. “Though I can assure you they are no threat to you.”
“Do you think they will make themselves visible to me?” Viktor asked, with a feigned smirk. Yuri (like he had started calling him again at some point) didn’t imitate the gesture, but only nodded.
“If you wish to see them, you will take my hand and will be capable of it.”
Not having much to lose, he grabbed the offered hand and immediately saw him disappearing. He arched an eyebrow, confused, not knowing at the beginning what was happening. It was gratifying, months later, to know he hadn’t lost him forever, nor that they had fused together. For a moment, confusion was the only thing his brow had no qualms of showing.
As the guide had indicated, he observed the other side, where he supposed was whomever it was. His eyes widened in clear shock, though his gaze turned into a softer one quickly, sweetness, reminiscence and a melancholy he didn’t know he possessed.
Dressed in a white suit —a variation of the one he had worn at Agape — and hair so beautifully styled, was Yuri. And if it hadn’t been for the sound of the skates he would’ve though he was an angel, since from his suit wings were born and he was floating mere millimeters above the ice.
Tchaikovsky could be heard faintly, even if only Viktor’s ears were capable of relating such music —so tragic, so emotional, so beautiful— with such movements —calculated, graceful, divine— the blond was making. There were times where music could never be as emotive like the way it was played was capable of being. In this case, Tchaikovsky playing the last song of a swan, as beautiful as it was, could never match what Viktor saw Yuri was capable of showing, what he was capable of expressing. Tchaikovsky tried to imitate a swan, whereas Yuri had managed to turn into one.
And so, as the music neared its end, Viktor could see the figure of his dear kitten become see-through, and little by little, disappear; on such a point where, with his arms placed in position number five and his legs on position number four, Viktor could only be sure of having seen him one second… one… second, that he wished to transform into eternity.
“ ... До свидания… дорогая… ” he murmured, to the nothingness that had replaced the spot once belonging to Yuri in his heart.
He did nothing to avoid the sensation, it was calming and soothing, it was a realization, that even if you didn’t see it, it did not mean it wasn’t there. That even if you couldn’t touch it, it wasn’t only a product of your imagination when he could once touch his cheeks, and strived to confess. That just because it didn’t hurt him anymore, it didn’t mean he had stopped missing him, loving him.
Because he did —and he felt extremely cheesy for it.
《Years will trickle by. We will engage eternally in battle. We will never be together. We will die, again and again, longing for an impossible end.
But as I’ve said, you should know by now: I will never give up》
—Eternally Never Yours; EchoEternal .
Translations and/or clarifications:
(1) Glas wen : s. (from Wellish) Literally, “blue smile.” A smirk.
(2) Razliubit : v. (from Russian) “Falling out of love.”
(3) До свидания… дорогая: “Goodbye… my beloved.”
(4)Music Yuri was skating to: Suite from Swan lake.
Ending notes: thanks for reading until here, as I have already said up there, I'm not really fond of this fandom. It seemed too… um, false to me. Even though so, to Daniela it didn’t. That's why I’d like if you would (and I plead you to) respect the work. You can criticize my plots, my character management, my word management, but not the pairing. Just like you have one, Princess has one, and I would like that just as she makes the effort to respect yours, for you to respect hers; I apologize beforehand if spilling the soup like that, without having prior (direct) contact with the other participants in the fandom, was a little harsh.
If you liked it, I'm very glad you did, I hope to have the gall again to get into this small hole, maybe even staying.
Bye!

i hate this fandom for making me google american politics all the time
@burritoooooo @badromantics sorry I don’t know what I’m dooiiing
Honestly, Burr was not that integral to the running of his government. He was but one senator in a sea of one hundred, hardly connected to Washington or his cabinet. Anything Burr was working on could be covered by his fellow New York senator, Angelica Schuyler.
At least, that’s what Washington wished he could say. As it was, Burr’s apparent personal connection to several of his cabinet members meant that nearly nothing got done anymore. And while Schuyler did valiantly work overtime, she was one person, and Senators a lot of work.
Thus, it came to this. Washington ordered both of them to work today, and when that didn’t work (stubborn, the both of them!) to at least not bother Burr for another 24 hours. This meant that, conveniently, the hospital was lacking in meddling political visitors, save for himself of course.
Burr didn’t actually say anything at first, which was a surprise given how much of a shock Washington knew his secret service could be. For someone who did not remember any aspect of being in a high government position, Burr was shockingly calm as men in suits cleared the room and left to stand respectively outside.
Washington decided to get right to the point, offering Burr a firm handshake. “It’s good to see you well, Mr. Burr.” The handshake was returned, surprisingly firm- then, Burr’s handshakes were always the exact kind of proper, weren’t they?- and then smiled. Washington did not raise an eyebrow, but his incredulity was real. He could not recall a single moment of Burr smiling in his presence.
That fact had never bothered him, but staring into the face of a slightly amused, slightly confused Burr made Washington question himself. Washington rarely questioned himself save for big, awful, life changing events. He did not much care for it.
“It is good to see you, sir.” Burr finally spoke, sitting up straighter in his bed. “I am sorry for this, you must know of my amnesia by now.”
Washington nodded. “Yes. Terrible business, what happened to you. I pray for your recovery.” Somehow, this made Burr’s smile widen, as if he was thinking of some joke. It was almost surreal.
“I’m sorry,” Burr apologized again, and at least that was familiar, “I see you have guards, so you must be very important. More so than a senator, which I’m told is me, and probably more so than the Treasury and State secretary who have visited already.”
“Ah, they should have at least a small detail, which they likely jumped.” Honestly, they were visiting the victim of an attempted political assassination. Then, the rest of Burr’s words caught up. Washington felt a very unfamiliar rush of embarrassment. The telltale warmth of a light flush bloomed across his cheekbones. This was ridiculous, Washington did not blush.
Burr’s lips twisted into what was definitely a held back laugh. “I apologize. My name is George Washington, president of the United States.”
He was vindicated as Burr’s expression changed to appropriate shock. “Oh shit,” Burr exclaimed, as if he’d found out a strange piece of gossip, “This is awkward. I just sassed the president.” He frowned slightly, a confused ‘what is my life’ expression.
Washington counted to ten, backwards. Since when was Burr a less loud, more sarcastic Hamilton? He’d known Burr somewhat from his time in the army. Not well of course, but earlier than almost anyone currently alive could claim. Washington thought the distance was a good thing, that he could see what his troublesome cabinet members couldn’t, and find a solution to this whole mess.
Washington began to suspect his plan was flawed, possibly from the moment he considered Burr as a mess to solve. But Burr had always behaved more like a function of cool, balanced efficiency than a person- to Washington, at least.
This was a mess. Washington decided to press on. “I’ve come to talk to you about your position as senator.”
Burr nodded. “Secretaries Hamilton and Jefferson have spoken to me on this topic, sir. I have been exchanging emails with Senator Schuyler.”
Washington was mollified by the more respective tone. Maybe this wouldn’t be a disaster. “Yes, so I’ve heard. They also say you have no intentions of returning..?”
“Yes,” Burr nodded again. “You see, it seems completely disingenuous for a man with no memories of his political actions to resume his position. How would the people of New York be assured that I will stay true to the version of me that was elected, when even I can not be assured? I can’t, in good conscience, simply slide back into the position of senator and blindly attempt to conform to a persona that does not currently exist, and that no one can even describe to me consistently.”
The reasoning was sound. From Hamilton’s ramblings, Washington had been given the impression that Burr was merely shell shocked and resistant to face the world. But Burr actually argued his thoughts well.
However, reasonable as he was, Washington needed Burr back on that senate if he wanted an ounce of respite at work. “I think you underestimate yourself, Senator Burr. You are still yourself, after all, and even if your memories don’t come back, I’m sure you could come to the same conclusions and motivations of your pre-amnesiac self.”
“Please don’t call me that, sir” Burr’s eyes flashed.
Washington was thrown to the past. ‘Don’t call me son.’ expressive brown eyes flashed in agitation.
Now was not the time. “You are a senator, Burr. You need to return to your life.” This firm tone had worked in the past, but now it only made Burr bristle. When was he so rebellious? Even as a practical child in the army, he had never acted quite like this.
Then again, Washington suddenly recalled, the first time they met had been mere days after General Montgomery’s death, whom Burr worked closely under. Had Burr’s uncomfortable robotic behaviour, the behaviour that earned Washington’s instinctive distrust for life, really been simple grief?
“Are you going to order me, sir?” Burr was closing off rapidly, clearly angry and upset. With all the similarities this version of Burr seemed to share with Hamilton, at least blowing up wasn’t one of them. RIght now though, that didn’t seem much of a consolation.
Washington was done. He didn’t even know if he could order a senator to not quit, it didn’t seem constitutional, but the situation was unprecedented. The very fact that Washington considered doing so meant that he had failed what he came there for. “I did not mean to upset you,” Washington said instead. “I will take my leave, but please consider what I’ve said.”
“I will, sir.” The words were stiff, the tone reminiscent of the Burr Washington thought he knew. For the first time in this strange, confusing altercation, that seemed like a bad thing.
#fic#I SWEAR IM NOT STEALING UR FIC IDEA#FORGIVE ME#i need that washington + burr interaction practice for that other fic im tryin to work on#does anyone want another one when washington meets with burr once more after hes gone all closed off suspicious#shutting everyone out#and burr would be all#sir of all people you should be happy im returning to my past selfs reticence#washingdad like no son i was wrong it clearly wasnt healthy for you then or now and i was being closed mind not to see it#ALSO NO ONE SAID WHY HES AMNESIAC I THINK#SO I WENT WITH#HE WAS LEGIT SHOT IN THE HEAD BECAUSE SOMEONE WAS TRYING TO KILL HIM#PEOPLE ACTUALLY CAN SURVIVE BULLETS THRU THE BRAIN LOOK IT UP

45 Tech Terms Translated Into Plain English
Ever seen the movie The Social Network about Mark Zuckerberg and the founding of Facebook? In the movie, people kept saying “he’s wired in” or “they’re wired in” over and over again in reference to people coding intensely with their headphones on. Not knowing anything about programming, I always imagined that being “wired in” meant the programmers were somehow listening to the computers, or that they were connected to the code somehow … or something weird that us non-programmers would never understand. Turns out it just meant they were concentrating really hard with headphones on. Well, good thing I never hypothesized out loud. We all misinterpret some of the techy terms floating around web and product design nowadays — but now more than ever, marketers need to be familiar with this vocabulary so we can communicate better with our IT, web design, or product development departments. To help bridge the gap, here are 45 techy terms every marketer (and human) should understand. (For a few of these, we drew on these 60 marketing acronyms every industry pro should know.) 301 Redirect A permanent redirect from one URL to another — usually from a company’s old website to their new website. They’re also used to redirect web traffic from those old web pages to the new ones that have replaced them. 404 Web visitors see 404 error pages when they try to reach a web page that doesn’t exist. This usually happens when the web page has been deleted or the visitor mistyped the URL. Check out HubSpot’s 404 page here. Alt Text “Alternative text,” or “alt text.” The text associated with an image. It’s usually the file name of that image, but alt text can be customized using most content management systems (like HubSpot’s). When an image isn’t able to load in an email, website, or blog post, the alt text is displayed instead. It’s important for all the images on your website to have alt text because it’s the only way search engines like Google can understand what an image is about, which helps you optimize your website for search. It also makes images accessible to the blind because screen readers can read aloud the alt text. API “Application programming interface.” A computer programming term meaning a series of rules. APIs allow an application to extract information from a service and use that information in their own application, or sometimes for data analysis. It’s kind of like a phone for applications to have conversations — an API literally “calls” one application and gets information to bring to you to use in your software. APIs facilitate the data needed to provide solutions to customer problems. HubSpot has APIs that developers use to get information from our software into theirs. It’s important for marketers to understand what APIs can do to factor them in to their marketing strategies. Learn more about how marketers can use APIs here. AWS Amazon Web Services is a service that helps web developers and ecommerce owners in developing certain shopping-related features of their websites. Browser Cache The appliance or instrument through which a browser saves the data needed to see a website, like images and HTML. When you revisit a web page, it’ll take less time to load than the first time you visited it because a cached version of the page was already saved the first time you were there. Because you have a cached version of the page, your browser doesn’t need to send a new request to see that page. Learn more about browser caches here. “Cached out” can also be slang for really, really tired. Blockchain In simple terms, blockchain is a ledger system that uses an open, distributed record to keep track of transactions — transactions could mean cryptocurrencies, medical information, voting or home records, and more. Cart Abandonment When people add products to online shopping carts but don’t check out and actually purchase those products. According to Fireclick, 62.30% is the average online cart abandonment rate. It’s a common problem for many ecommerce stores. Learn 8 reasons for cart abandonment and how to combat it here. CDN “Content delivery network” or “content distribution network.” A system of servers on the internet that provides content rapidly to multiple users by duplicating the content on multiple servers and directing the content to users based on proximity. CDNs enable better performance and availability — plus, they offload traffic served directly from the content provider’s website. They’re especially good for streaming audio, video, and internet television programming. To give you a better idea of how the system works, CDN operators get paid by content providers (like media companies and ecommerce vendors) to deliver their content to end users. In turn, CDNs pay ISPs (internet service providers), carriers, and network operators for hosting its servers in their data centers. Cookies/Tracking Cookies A small file that a web server automatically sends to your personal computer when you browse certain websites. The identifying information they contain includes login credentials (including usernames and passwords), shopping cart information, and preferences. They’re stored as text files on your hard drive so servers can access them when you return to websites you’ve visited before. Ever made a return visit to a website like Amazon and seen content tailored to your user preferences? That’s because on your first visit, a cookie was installed. When you came back, the website server read your cookie and recognized you. Learn more about how marketers can use cookies here. CMS A CMS, or content management system, is a platform that allows less-techy people to build websites and content from professionally designed templates. More tech-savvy users can often further customize these templates or website themes with HTML edits or plug-ins, which you’ll learn more about on this list. Notable examples of CMSs include WordPress and WIx. CSS “Cascading style sheets.” A language that manages the design and presentation of web pages: color, look, feel, and so on. It works together with HTML (see HTML), which handles the content of web pages. “HTML is the skeleton of your web pages, while CSS is the clothing,” as one of our colleagues says. With CSS, you can create rules to tell your website how you want it to display information. And you can keep the commands for the style stuff — fonts, colors, and so on — separate from the commands for the content. They’re called “cascading” because you can have multiple style sheets, with one style sheet inheriting properties (or “cascading”) from others. Learn more here. Disaster Recovery Plan A plan that helps an organization prepare in the event that its website goes down or something happens to the webmaster. These disasters could be hard drive failure, hackers, and so on. Disaster recovery plans include recording important website information, performing and saving regular backups of your website, determining an implementation plan for recovering your website should anything happen, and keeping an extra copy of your website data in a safe place. DNS “Domain name server.” Servers that translates web addresses into one or more IP addresses. This is why you can enter HubSpot.com instead of having to remember our IP address. DoS/DDoS Attack “Denial-of-service” or “distributed denial-of-service” attack. An attempt to make a machine or network resource unavailable to its intended users. DoS threats usually target websites or services hosted on high-profile web servers like banks and credit card payment gateways, but they’re also common in business in the form of website attacks. For example, one common type of attack on businesses would be attempting a service overload — i.e. flooding a network with so much information that it either can’t respond to legitimate traffic, or responds so slowly that it’s basically useless. Sadly, there isn’t much you can do to avoid being a victim of a DoS attack except securing passwords and installing anti-virus software and a firewall. Signs of an attack are unusually slow network performance, unavailability of a website, or the inability to access a website. Contact your IT team if you sense something’s off. Hosting Servers The web servers where website files are housed, served, and maintained. HTML “Hyper-text markup language.” The language used to direct the architecture of your website, landing pages, and emails. HTML lays out the structure of your website, from the title and first header, to a bulleted list, to your footer. Remember, “HTML is the skeleton of your web pages, while CSS is the clothing.” Learn more here. Interface/GUI GUI stands for “graphical user interface,” known also as simply “interface.” An interface is the part of a piece of software that the end user actually sees and interacts with. It also makes the image information available to people who turned off images on their mobile phones to lower bandwidth charges or people in rural areas who turn off images to speed download. (Alt text is also important for SEO purposes because it lets Google know what the subject matter of the image is.)
