Truth be told, never in her wildest dreams does Shauna Shipman imagine she’d end up in the first U-19 Women’s World Cup roster if the only reason she still played soccer at all involved a scholarship she had begrudgingly accepted to unburden her mother. Much less that she’d end up meeting again with her estranged ex-best friend turned enemy, who hated her guts and a set of mismatched misfits, according to a new weird system, the best crops of female players their age America could find.
Spending her last couple of weeks of summer break running after the ball with a bunch of strangers isn’t precisely Shauna’s idea of fun, and neither is getting rid of the mold around her bathroom tiles, to be fair. But this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity; what could go wrong?
Apparently, many things.
The romantic soccer comedy drama nobody asked for is out.

Please get down from the plane - Laura Lee/Lottie - Yellowjackets
Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: Yellowjackets (TV) Rating: General Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Laura Lee/Lottie Matthews Characters: Laura Lee (Yellowjackets), Lottie Matthews Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Alternate Universe - Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies, No Lesbians Die, Character Death Fix, Fix-It, Religion, First Kiss, lottie saves laura lee that's it Words: 1464
"Did you see something?" Laura Lee asked, her voice lowering even more. "What did you see?"
Again, Lottie shook her head. "Please get down from the plane," she said.
--
Lottie makes sense of her vision of Laura Lee just in time to try to save her.
Laura Lee pulled closed the door of the plane again, and Coach Ben had no option but to defeatedly step backward and let her leave on what he still believed was a terrible idea. But Laura Lee was ready. She got comfortable on the plane, got settled in, got Leonard seated upright right beside her, and then the door of the plane swung open again.
"Please, Coach, don't make me swear again, you know I don't like it," Laura Lee sighed with her eyes closed tightly, asking God for patience.
"Don't do it."
"Lottie?" Laura Lee's eyes snapped open and she hastily turned to the side to stare at the other girl.
She wouldn’t have called Lottie the best friend she'd ever had, it wasn't exactly that. She was, out of all the girls in the team, the one she'd been closest to, though. For one reason or another, they were always pulled to each other's sides. Laura Lee had no problem in firmly believing God wanted them there for each other and, so far, they had done exactly that. Only just recently their relationship had become complicated in ways that Laura Lee had no way to explain, and Lottie only had vague visions to make up for their lack of words. It wasn't just the wilderness, and it wasn't Lottie's own new version of spirituality. It was... them.
"Don't do it, please," Lottie repeated. Her big brown eyes stared at the blonde so earnestly, passionate like when she talked about prophecies, but more focused and centered than she had been since they stepped into that damned plane.
"Lottie...," Laura Lee whispered, "I told you, this is my purpose."
The brunette shook her head emphatically and closed her eyes as if whatever she was thinking of brought her physical pain. "Please, Laura Lee, I just... I have a bad feeling about this," Lottie insisted.
Laura Lee bit her lip, deep in thought. She looked around them, all eyes were on them. All these people needed salvation, and she was the only one at the moment that could do something about it. She had to, she had to try and have faith she would succeed. It was the only way.
"I can't give up, and let us all die, Lottie, just because you have a bad feeling," she said, hating herself a little for the sharp end of that last comment. She didn't mean it, not exactly. She believed in Lottie with more of her heart than she believed in any other person. Frankly, it scared her a little. But it was her affection for Lottie, and all the other girls of course, one of the main reasons why she believed she had to do this.
"You told me visions are God's way of communicating. A warning or a revelation," Lottie said. Her eyes turned vulnerable, but her voice was firm.
Laura Lee's conviction was wavering, but she knew that's how it often happened. There were temptations in men's path that tried to keep them from fulfilling God's purpose for them. The safety of staying here and hoping for the best without doing anything, without making any sacrifice for their salvation, that was a temptation. Lottie, however... was she a different kind of temptation? Why did she always feel like the only right thing among all the chaos though?
"Did you see something?" Laura Lee asked, her voice lowering even more. "What did you see?"
Again, Lottie shook her head. "Please get down from the plane," she said.
"Lottie, tell me what you saw."
"Please get down from the plane."
"No, you know I have to do this."
"Laura Lee, I'm begging you, come on."
At first, when they were talking in whispers, Laura Lee had shifted closer to the door to better hear what the other girl had to say. But now their disagreement was growing heated, their voices were raising, Laura Lee's face was flushed, and Lottie was breathing heavily, gripping the seat of the plane so tightly her knuckles were turning white. When she noticed this, Laura Lee reached out to gently place her hand on top of hers. She felt Lottie flinch a little at the touch, and then start to relax.
Laura Lee wanted more than ever to give up and give in, stay with Lottie, and the others, and ignore her purpose. Her faith told her that was when she would have to be strongest, when she would have to ignore temptations, conflicting feelings, instincts, and perhaps even logic, and only listen to God's will.
"I have to go," she said softly, feeling her heart break in a way that was completely new for her. All the fight had left her, she didn't want to argue, not with Lottie of all people.
Laura Lee squeezed Lottie's hand one last time and then let her go, prepared to move away, but then the most unexpected thing happened. In a swift movement, Lottie stood up on her tiptoes and before Laura Lee could move too far away, she took her face in her hands, as gently as she could in her last desperate act, and she pulled her in for a kiss.
From the very instant their lips touched, their lives were changed forever. The moment was astonishing, wonderful, more intense than near-death experiences, more powerful than prophetic visions, and sweeter than anything they had ever dreamed of. It was a good amount of confusing too. Even as she kissed Laura Lee, Lottie wasn't sure if the kiss was meant to be a peck that got out of hand, or of she was perhaps purposefully kissing her friend for all the times she hadn't known what to do with the affection she felt for her, and for all the times in the future that she might not get to kiss her again if she let her leave on that plane.
The rest of the world had ceased to exist for them, there was no movement but the soft push and pull of their lips together, and there were no sounds except for the little hums of pleasure that escaped them here and there. Of course, if they had wanted to listen, they wouldn't have missed the quiet, and not-so-quiet gasps of surprise and shocked whispers going around a few feet away from the plane, but that was the least of their concerns at the moment.
Eventually, Laura Lee had to pull away. She didn't miss the way that Lottie was smiling at her, but her heart ached when she saw the other girl's expression immediately turned to worry. Lottie was worrying she had just made everything worse. She knew Laura Lee had kissed her back but was that enough?
"What was that?" Laura Lee asked, her voice was the softest that Lottie had ever heard her.
"I'm not sure," Lottie replied sincerely, "just, please get down from the plane so we can figure it out." She was expecting a long silence that would eat her alive while Laura Lee prepared the kindest words in her repertoire to turn her down gently and fly away to certain doom.
Instead, "Okay," Laura Lee agreed quickly and with a sweet smile. Lottie offered her hands to help her descend the plane.
Then, the moment that Laura Lee's feet were safely on the ground, a weird sound made her look behind her. Leonard had caught fire. "Leonard!" she screamed. Immediately, Lottie's arms were around her, pulling her away.
The other girls moved closer to see what was going on, but a moment later, the fire spread to the rest of the plane. Everything happened so quickly. Faster than they had moved closer, everyone started running away, hands reaching for each other, bodies shielding others, people stumbling to the ground and hiding behind trees. Then, the explosion. Without reason, without explanation, and with no warning for anyone but Lottie, the plane exploded. Right in front of them. Exactly at the moment that Laura Lee was supposed to be flying it.
Everyone's eyes were on the fiery scene in front of them, it looked like something straight from hell, but Lottie's eyes were firmly on Laura Lee's face. Safe. Not blackened by fire and smoke. Not a single burn on her angelic face. Lottie's heart and mind finally felt truly at ease for the first time since her improvised baptism. That is, until she realized they were still holding hands.
Laura Lee looked at Lottie again, then at their joined hands, and back to Lottie's face. Then she smiled and squeezed Lottie's hand. It was true neither of them understood exactly what had just happened or what was going to happen in their future, but at least that moment sealed the promise of figuring it out together.
