this post has been in my likes for a while and i kept meaning to reblog it but i was having a hard time finding the words to express what i wanted to say

anyway this letter has actually been making me tear up for weeks now bc like. ok. this is gonna take a sec to explain:

so ive been active in the ofmd fandom since like april 2022 and while the majority of the content on here is reblogs, i also have been pretty regularly posting original stuff since like june or july 2022, primarily metas and shitposts.

but i’m definitely not posting as much as i used to (i think fall 2022 was my most prolific posting period) bc my life circumstances have changed and i dont have as much free time and energy as i did a year ago. and this is a good thing for me! im very happy with how my life is going rn! but i do miss getting to dedicate more of my time to thinking and talking abt gay pirates.

more than that tho. i also consider myself a half decent writer and like a pretty mediocre artist (and i don’t say that to be self deprecating, i’m not insecure abt where my skills are at for things that are essentially silly hobbies. worrying too much abt quality takes the fun out of it for me). and i’ve posted like a handful of scribbley ofmd doodles and one chapter of an abandoned WIP that i dislike now and actually don’t want anyone to read.

and sometimes i feel kinda? guilty?? about that?? not so much abt not posting as much anymore, bc like i said, i’m busier these days and that’s a good thing. it’s more abt art and fic, especially fic bc i actually have been writing a lot of ofmd stuff it’s just all WIPs, like i have more ofmd WIP files on my google drive than i can count and absolutely none of it is worth sharing. i’ve been telling myself i’m gonna write all this ofmd fic and then i never finish anything and sometimes it feels like i’m… idk, not doing enough for the fandom??? i feel like i should be Contributing More. like it is my civic duty and i’m letting my siblings in fandom down. and no, i don’t know why i feel this way.

anyway i have always been a big fan of rambling in the tags but i often like, forget other ppl can see them (which has gotten me in trouble before lol). in my brain, talking in the tags is like talking out loud for my own benefit.

idk i’m getting really teary realizing someone actually noticed and appreciated me doing that, that even when i’m not making any content myself or not as much of the content i want to be making or i’m making less content than i used to, i’m still contributing to the fandom in some way by cheering on other creators who have more time and/or energy to create more than i do. like i said, i’m mostly talking in the tags for myself, but i’m so so glad that ppl appreciate my thoughts and i’m so glad it’s encouraging to other fans. there is a lot of talent and a lot of love in this fandom and even tho it’s uhhh Rough Sometimes im still really fuckin glad to be here with y’all <3

i don’t think i was named after someone specifically, i just know that my grandma wanted to give me a different name, but my dad and mom went for poli after all and i’m happy with that since it sounds like a trans chosen name lol

When was the last time you cried?

i think at the beginning of july, because i was missing my gf a lot with whom we parted for a long time until we can see eo again

Do you have kids?

no, and funnily enough i have this question of kids on my mind a lot nowadays lmao. i related heavily to daniel howell on this topic, he talks about it in a video “i don’t want kids” and the main point he makes is that he wouldn’t want to bring kids into this state of a planet, which i basically agree with. but it would be SOOO easy to just get pregnant for me rn, because my family would love it. they want grandkids and i believe they would support me and love me even more if i decided to have my own kids, but sadly i don’t think it’s an option for me lmao. like.. i guess i wouldn’t be opposed to pregnancy?? even tho i’m scared of it, but if my partner would really want our own kids, idk.. i think i could get persuaded. but that’s another topic altogether, since my romantic life is also far from being the norm in this society and it’s just very complicated and long distance at the moment 😐

i enjoyed playing sports like volleyball, table tennis skiing, swimming, but my main passion is tennis and i really hope i can integrate that sport into my life more in the near future, because i just crave playing it

probably the way they dress? i usually always tend to find queer folks more interesting and fascinating since we usually have either interesting hair, makeup or some diy things on our clothings or bags

but other than that i love to see when people smile, so once i see someone smile, i remember it the most, i think

i’d usually say “just usual brown” but i’ve gotten lots of compliments about my eye color in the past year so i guess there’s something more to it than just being boring brown

Awww allergies are the worst - my mom has them too, and she was so against getting a cat at first but now she loves him the most and is willing to take a Claritin just to be around my cat hahaha 😂

I love writing for BTS! Idk if I’ll ever find another muse for my writing per se, so as long as BTS is around, I will be too lol

1. I really like the name Alizeh! I think it’s of Persian origin and it means “wind”. But me and my sister are literally fighting rn over who gets to name their kid this name if it’s a girl! She might win tho bc I have no prospects in sight for dating, let alone starting a family hehe 😅

2. Hand holding! I hold everyone’s hands (not in a weird way). I’ll just go up to my co-residents and be like “give me your hand”, and then I’ll hold their hand for a minute and warm it up and they think it’s so cute 🥺

3. If I get one hand wet, I can’t dry it off, I need to wet the other hand and dry them both. I dislike the feeling of having only hand be damp 😑

4. Winter!!! I feel like my style is at its best during the winter bc I can add lots of layers and elements whereas in the summer I stick to workout clothes and t shirts bc the heat is no joke! Also winter is just fun with all the holiday activities and snow! I’m totally a cold weather person ❄️

5. I don’t really think I have a favorite group besides bts! I do listen to a lot of different k-artists though! Some of my favorites right now are Bibi and NewJeans!

6. For books, I recently read All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir and it made me full on sob with how heartbreaking it was 😭 for movies, I watched 20th Century Girl and cried at that one too bc I just couldn’t take the ending 💜 I’m in a heartbreak mood these days lol

7. I do not think I’m very talented at all, so I struggle to answer questions like this. I used to like baking a lot but then it became really expensive and time consuming and I got insecure bc I felt like other people were better at it than me, so I just stopped. oooh i think my style would definitely lean more towards being very emotional and expressive. i love being about to dig deep into the thoughts and feelings of a character in one specific scene rather than over the course of a bunch of different scenes. which is odd cause i love doing it but i also just find having to write out a lot of scenes oddly harder or me to pull off

god i love a good 5+1 i have like 4 in my wip folder rn and i’m so excited to finish them. hurt/comfort is alway a good favorite of mine. specifically for 911 tho? i don’t know what it is but i am the biggest sucker for a buddie first kiss that takes place in a kitchen, i have no idea why but i love it so much. also artist!eddie is just *chefs kiss*

okay but to actually answer ur question i think it was just. what we NEEDED in this series rn there’s been a lot of angst and i loved POF, i did, but this was just so SOFT and FUN and there was a sprinkle of angst but not OVERWHELMING angst and it was so good. i love that virgil is the one who TOOK CHARGE and he DID THAT himself. he’s the PROTECTOR and he SHOWED IT here. i love that for him❤️💘💙💓❤️💖❣️💖❤️💓💙

also the art was so pretty!!!! all of them look so ADORABLE. the artists are so talented. and story-wise i like how it allowed them to physically interact!!! in the same frame!!!!! virgil turned roman’s face!!! roman put a hand on virgil’s shoulder!!!!! they both grabbed thomas’ shirt and both pushed him (literally) to do stuff!!!!! just. more freedom and i loved that

and idk fam they’re just so HAPPY even tho roman and virgil are two of the sides that maybe are not talking to the others as much bc of, yknow, many past events. i like the allusions to virgil not approving of janus’ acceptance/of lying in general but!!

as @subtlereferencetomyinterests pointed out to me in a galaxy brain moment, virgil’s line “are you gonna rely on deceit for all the answers? is that fair to him?” could mean that virgil recognizes how depending on a single side can hurt that side so he may not like janus but he still doesn’t want janus to get hurt by thomas relying ONLY on janus, bc it will hurt janus—just like relying too much on patton has already hurt patton in the past.

I’m assuming this isn’t an unpopular opinion but Niall has shitty fucking management that has done nearly nothing to help advance his career since Slow Hands. I remember Niall saying something about how after the success of Slow Hands, he took 2 years to release new music because he’s such a “perfectionist”. While that can be true, that fucked his career. People forgot about the song/him. Harry’s management will do anything to advance his success. Niall’s management won’t capitalize on the things they should to make him reach his potential. There’s a reason Harry is where he is, and while Niall is honestly more talented, Niall isn’t as popular as Harry.

I can see you point but you have all the wrong reasons. Harry’s management is good, very good, but why do you think each boy has a different management? That was all prearranged, and the purpose of 1D was to come out with only 1 solo artist after, Harry.

now, Niall doesn’t have a bad management. If you want to rank them, he’s just right after Harry. His management did not expect such a good response of the fans and popularity for Niall, and they could do better, yes, but here’s the deal: he has a good management. He gets constant interviews, he goes to night shows, does collabs, radio interviews, he was able to do the live stream concert. Niall’s problem is that he doesn’t have a HQ.

so, Harry has a good management + HQ and that explains (a part of) his success. Louis, on the other hand (just to set an example) has a shitty management (and no label) but he has a HQ. Niall has good management but no HQ, so a lot of promo ends up relying on himself (whyyyy do you think he did all those livestreams at the beginning of quarantine????? lmao). And to close it off, Liam has a bad management + no HQ. you see now my point?

it’s a mix of factors but we have to consider the boys aren’t treated with the same standards, so comparing their success isn’t just about “how talented they are”, we have to take all this things in hand too. But yes, my point is: I do think Niall has a good management, his problem is having no HQ.

The perfectionist part tho.... Yeah I don’t agree with that. releasing song after song will make him stay on trend, but quantity doesn’t equal quality, and at the end, quality is what is going to last. That’s another issue I see with Harry too, he’s trendy rn but do you think someone (besides the fandom) is going to listen to fine line once the trend is over? :/

Excuse me as I go through the sprites used in the episode and ramble about which characters they are based on.

Firstly, I wanna put it out there that all the sprite art is fucking gorgeous and I am in awe of it all. My intention with this post is just to highlight what certain ones were based on for fun, not to pull away from the talent that it took to do the sprites.

Secondly, I know that these are not completely accurate (except in cases where the artist clearly wanted them to be)

Thirdly, hullo I’m an ace attorney, pokemon and general nintendo stan so... this might get long bc all the games were so good.

Anyway, I’m gonna focus on the courtroom specific poses for the ace attorney ones, bc the whole song has a lot of really good ones and they might be based on already existing character sprites - its just a lot rn, its 3am.

So, Janus’ sprites are obviously Edgeworth (considering he is on the prosecution and everything)

His second one, I couldn’t specifically find a reference for, but I love it anyway and just wanted to share as it still has Edgeworth/Male Ace Attorney character proportions.

Patton’s are Phoenix Wright, of course.

Thomas’ sprite as co-counsel is Mia Fey - just... without the obvious. No other co-counsel (as far as I remember) stands as straight up as she does.

Roman’s is difficult. The proportions are so different and the fact his gavel is visible and in his hand is a wild difference from the judge’s sprites that I feel as though his inspiration may have been some of the front facing sprites of either Phoenix or Edgeworth (mostly due to proportions) or other male characters who take to the witness stand. I have no evidence tho.

And then we have the full courtroom shot which seems to be a mix of counsel sprites. Patton is Phoenix for sure, while Janus is now Franszika. Thomas is hard to narrow down, but it seems to be based more off of Trucy or Apollo’s stance from Apollo Justice. Virgil is one of the audience members, obvs. Logan... I have no idea. The closest I can think of would be Olga Orly from Turnabout Trump, but that is a stretch at best.

Now. Pokemon.

Oh my god. I almost cried.

It’s a wonderful recreation of my favourite generation of Pokemon and where I started (Generation 3), specifically Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald. In fact, the spot where the store is is actually a replacement of the Pokemon Centre in Mauville City - using the tile set of Ruby/Sapphire.

But my favourite part, was the text and Thomas’ trainer backsprite. The text immediately took me back to playing this generation, in all the best ways! And Thomas’ backsprite was based on Brendan - the male protagonist from this generation as well.

The Mario section - clearly based off of Super Mario Brothers All Stars upgrade of the original Super Mario Bros. Specifically, the final Bowser boss fight - from the background down to the individual moving sprites to the UI.

And then... the part I spoiled myself on by accidentally hovering over the time bar... the part that I almost fucking bawled my eyes out at... Mother 3. Everything... is perfect. The background. The UI elements. The text. The characters. Good god, I almost cried.

The Final Fight segment killed me. Like Thomas as Haggar is hilarious to me! I don’t have much else to say, it’s just like before where every detail is so close to the original game that is awe-inspiring.

Now, I am far from knowledgeable about Mega Man. I could tell you the basics, but nothing more than that, so I had to go hunting for the specific game that the final boss part was based on. I originally thought X, but it was actually Mega Man 7 - which again was precise down to the health bars, which are very distinctive of MM7.

Now. That Kefkaroth fight. Damn... Final Fantasy 6 was the obvious inspiration - those battle sprites make me think of suplexing a train (honestly, if you haven’t seen that, look it up. It’s fantastic.) But the UI specifically seems to come from FF6 Advance - from what I found whilst looking around.

A couple of the character sprites seem specific enough for me to point out. Biggs (top) seems to be based on Locke, whilst Bubu seems to be based on Terra. The other two are fairly generic, but I want to say they are likely based on sprites of early party members, such as Edgar and Sabin. I’m also sure that the enemy sprite is based off of something... but I cannot find it, either in my brain or online. It may just be my imagination tho.

Hello! I am sorry to bother you but I am a senior getting ready for college this year. I am in the US and I wanted to major in the same thing you did, do you have any possible tips for me? I still haven't even looked for colleges that would be best for animation majors so I figured if you were up to giving out any tips/saying any basic ideas if you wanted to/if you had the time to then maybe I'll have a better idea! I apologise for if I sound weird! I'm tried to word it correctly but I can't 😿

hi!! i’m totally down to share my experiences! someone else also had some questions so i’m going to put them all together in this post haha, hopefully this helps! it’ll get pretty long so apologies ahead of time but art school is a lot to think about so i wanna be as helpful as i can around it, its a lot of time and money. I’m gonna put it all under a read more cus it is really really long!

i wanna start off with the fact that I had the privilege of attending school in a financially stable environment, my parents were/are really supportive so w merit scholarship i only came out with around 20-30k in debt and i also had housing support my entire time in school. they were ok with me focusing on academics so i didn’t hold a retail job unless i was out of school like summer/winter break. Ofc though i regularly take commissions/do merch/cons to try and pay for all bills that arent rent cus i did want to be financially independent where it was possible. I also did try and work during the semester but everytime i did my body would deff start to breakdown from the fact that i didnt wanna compromise schoolwork with jobs.. so just read ahead know this experience is from a student who was able to attend focusing only on school work for most of the time!

the biggest thing is knowing art school is not required to become a professional in either freelancing or industry! there are a huuuge amount of online tools and classes these days that provide the exact same education and for cheaper too. i think it depends on what experience you prefer/can handle/want but it’s definitely possible to make art/animation art your living without higher education. the thing that college will for sure give you though is the ability to meet deadlines, work even when you dont want to, and connections with peers+teachers. i think the connections part is invaluable because you’re basically coming out with a network of people you already know and who know you! 

also its good to know if you want to attend/can handle art school! it’s a lot of time and energy and students get burned out really fast. the best piece of advice i got before going was ‘if you draw every single day, even if its for only like 5-10 minutes or a doodle for a whole year you should be fine’ consistency is super key because you’re attending school to draw, and you’ll have to create work for stuff you aren’t excited for at some point or another. burnout is extremely real and the only reason i didn’t experience it was probably because i got super into drawing naruto fanart again inbetween sophomore and junior year! it helped give me something to draw seperated from school which is the only thing i was drawing for since i had entered rip. a heads up id also consider myself a workaholic so i fit in ok with the ‘art school’ environment but it is suuper unhealthy. if you are fantastic at managing your schedule then it’s definitely possible to take care of yourself! freshman year i got 8 hours a sleep a night and only pulled all nighters for some second semester finals at the end. sophomore year + up though i ended up prioritizing hw over sleep and like for sure, definitely shortened my life span. there’s another q down below where i’ll go more into detail but ya, be careful w ur work balance!

another tip especially for animation is knowing for a fact what type of animation you’re looking to go into, and what the school is offering. I didn’t think i’d get into art school at the time so i only applied to two places + decided if i didnt get into either id attend community to get credits out of the way while building portfolio. honestly? i did not do a lot of research LOL but like i did end up having the chance to tour and stuff! just know that each school will have a very different curriculum. The main differences are schools that prioritize 3D (cg animation, cg modeling, ect) and 2D/traditional (hand drawn, ‘oldschool’, digital or traditional based) this is a huge difference so make sure you do research for it! in most cases a 2D/traditional program will also offer 3D since it’s at the forefront of the industry animation wise rn. My school taught 2D but like hand drawn on physical paper 2D, frame by frame. while it was a good experience it’s super outdated because digital tools make it way faster + easier! i’d recommend looking for a program that is digital 2D over traditional 2D. 

if after your senior year covid is still affecting campuses in the US to keep them shut down i’d recommend attending a community college to get credits and then transferring into school. one of the negatives is paying money for gened classes when ur not there for them; if you can get them out of the way sooner and cheaper there is absolutely no negative + you could graduate earlier or use the extra time for better work or to work a job! 

these are all the general tips i think i’d give on like a broad basis of attending or not to think about? let me know if u have more q’s! someone asked q’s im answering below that go more into personal experiences + work culture so heres those:

- how many hours a week do u spend studying, in class, otherwise making art? like how much of ur life does it consume?

I was basically working on art.... 24/7! since i wasnt working a job at the same time i crammed as many credits as possible into my schedule so on avg i did 18 credit semesters (around 6 classes) art classes go for 6 hours and non art go for 3, so i’d spent around 30-35 hours in class a week! hw wise it varied on the class but combined it would be around 35-50 hours a week... im guessing? on average studio classes would have 8-10 hours of hw, maybe 5 for a light week, and gened classes 5 hours w them all combined. or this was probably how things were before junior year? junior+senior year i had thesis + everything else ontop.. i’d spend around 30-40 hours on thesis a week with other classes ontop of that bc my film was super long cus im a dummy! 

- is it hard going to art school n realising that altho u were probably quite talented… so is everyone else? Like. all of a sudden. ur not special and everyone seems as good as u, you know? More generally, how do u deal with comparison?

kinda?? i think instead of the idea of like you vs others it feels more of like a competition at first to be the best. this varies hugely on school culture though; my animation year was really friendly with each other and get along extremely well, so my answer to this is v different than some others who attended different schools. i think that the idea of ‘comparison’ only lasts a portion of the first year because at some point you realize that it’s not a who’s better as much as its a ‘these are my coworkers’ type thing? like healthy competition 100% because we’re all working to improve but i think most of us learned pretty early on that viewing each other as peers going into the same workforce helped a lot. also at some point everyone develops their own style/starts to develop their artistic preferences so there isn’t a way to compare whos 'better’ anymore? i dont think there ever is tbh because style is appealing based off of an individuals preferences. If anything realizing everyone else is also amazing makes you wanna work harder ig? or thats how i felt! it’s inspiring to be surrounded by so many people who create such amazing work. 

- is there a lot of workaholic culture? all nighter culture?

100000% there can be a workaholic and all nighter culture. i know people who avoided it and thats honestly fantastic because i fall super easily into that pit. sometimes i’ll pull all nighters on a personal project just because i really want to finish it... i am definitely considered a workaholic all the way through and its not healthy rip... i’d estimate at the worst i was pulling 2-3 all nighters a week and only 4-5 hours of sleep on the nights i didn’t? that was only for one year tho, after that i was like yeah ok this is really bad for my health in the long run LOL so i tried to cut it down to one all nighter a week and around 5-6 hours of sleep the rest of the week! by senior year my decision to cram in full semesters paid off and i was able to consistently get around 7 hours of sleep a night + no all nighters minus finals since my schedule was lighter despite thesis 😭 while there is that culture i don’t think people view it as like a badge of honor or something to be proud of anymore which is good, we mostly view it as a flaw of the art school system and something that needs to be fixed!!

- are you glad u did it? how did u know it was what u wanted?

i am glad i did it! i’m definitely in a limbo right now of if it was worth both my time, money, and my parents money rip but i think with what i got out of it i definitely wouldn’t be as far skill wise or knowledge wise when it comes to the art industry. i would say it was only worth it for be because i had so much support going in though so i was able to focus so much on improving. if i had only been able to put in part of the effort and not make full use of the resources provided i would honestly have a different answer.. 

i knew it was what i wanted when i realized i really couldn’t see myself pursuing a different profession happily! despite all the bumps and stuff im fully in love with drawing still and feel honored that it’s a field that can provide a living. my second profession choice was to go into culinary school? and third option i think going was into music cus i was also a band kid hehe.  

- how do u cope with ur hobby becoming ur job? how do u deal with art going from something u do for fun to something u do on command constantly?

i think seperating work art from personal art is important! in my case im doubling naruto into being personal work so i have something to fall back onto that isn’t work related. its been a hyperfixation for 12+ years? so drawing it at this point is just like personal art imo. some people have hobbies outside of art and only draw for their job! i think after attending classes for so long the idea of hobby turning into job feels extremely natural? also i enjoy doing it so thats a huge plus!

aaa,, this is kinda expected for me ig??? but definitely the skill to draw good anatomy w/o reference--it’s so frustrating to be limited to poses that have been photographed!! i want to make intricate and weird stuff!!

oooo!! okay this one’s kind of complicated--i’ve been playing piano on and off since i was like. really young . but i started picking it up more seriously (and by seriously i mean playing chords and shit to sing along to) very recently and i believe that’s my most recent hobby, unless my divination stuff counts--bc that’s a bit more recent!

OH BOY UR JUST ASKING FOR ALL THE EMO BANDS LMAO,, okay but for real, it’s not all emo bands. all time low is the first one to come to mind, but as a kid i was also a huge taylor swift fan (and i still love her music, it’s more of a guilty pleasure now tho,,)--and like anything from before the 90s brings back childhood memories of my mom trying to force me to listen to it!! i hated it back then, but now i’ve gained a new appreciation for all sorts of music, and the only thing i don’t really like is certain jazz singers,, don’t really know any names LMAO but i really do recommend all time low if you wanna listen to some music!!! my fav songs by them are dancing with a wolf and remembering sunday!

OH THAT’S A HARD ONE,,, i don’t watch a lot of movies/films,,, but i think my favorites have to be the it movies from 2017 and 2019 (so chapter 1 and chapter 2) [and generally anything that finn wolfhard stars in ? he’s fuckin amazingngngngngng he’s actually my special interest rn ,,,] and,, a least favorite would probably be um,,, poltergeist i guess? i love horror movies but i fell asleep watching it when i was younger and it never really interested me!!

YES I DO--for one i can move my pinky toes individually, and on my right foot i can move my fourth toe as well (but not on my left?) !!! i can also do that thing where u stretch ur thumb all the way back OR forward (depends on which hand we’re talking abt) to touch ur wrist lmAO!! i’m also an avid horseback rider!! well,, i was before i broke my arm, but i do want to get back in the saddle!! there’s just a lot going on with the healing process right now, broken titanium plate and all that,,, will post abt that if you want me to as well!!

siamese: any tattoos/piercings? (if so: which? if not: which would you get?)

OOO LOVE THIS!!!! for piercings, i have an industrial bar on my left ear, and my lobes are stretched to 12g !! my parents said i can’t go any bigger til i’m an adult but i plan on going all the way to 0g, maybe slightly bigger? idk ! and i don’t have any tattoos yet, BUT i know my first tattoo is gonna be a treble/bass clef heart with a heart monitor line through it on my left wrist!! i want my second tat to be my favorite horse (and the one that broke my arm) running between the surgery scars on my left arm!! and then for a third tattoo, on my right wrist i want to get something to match with my mom. she’s got a dopamine molecule tattoo so i was thinking i’d get serotonin to match !! we’re avid psychology lovers,, and i also want a whole plethora of piercings (none of which are inappropriate i promise that sounds painful no thank u) but i can go into that later lmAO

I DOOOOOO i’m both autistic and the adhd king (diagnosed when i was 5 for both of em) so i have plenty of fixations to talk about. some of the bigger interests of mine include finn wolfhard (but that’s not really obscure, lots of ppl love him), stranger things (also not obscure), and kin stuff in general (also not obscure)! BUT to get obscure, we have to dive deep!! i love psychology, i love poetry (and i mean like. really obscure strange free-verse poetry like i write that kinda stuff), and i’m particularly obsessed with wicca/witchcraft to the point where i’ve even become a baby witch!! i feel very connected to everything i’ve been doing with that, and i even got over a crush and rejection duo by making myself a sigil that i kept in my phone case for months! it’s,,, so much funnnn!!! divination is my favorite part honestly,,

top 5-10 music(songs/artists/albums) recommendations?

Ok so I’ve spent a good chunck of my life searching for flawless albums and interesting musicians. Here’s some that I’ve found:

1. The Fratellis, Costello Music. A 10/10 album, every song is perfect and this one should be to everyone’s tastes, it’s such a good jam at any time any place. Put this on at a party and everyone will like it.

2. Kate Bush. Y'all. If you’re too young to know the iconic cult legend that is Kate Bush, I’m throwing you a diamond rn. That woman made waves in the pop music scene in the 80s and forward. And don’t get discouraged by the words “pop music” bc this woman is profoundly talented and her songs are crafted with such thought and contemplation behind them it is phenomenal. She was DECADES ahead of her time. Her albums are very different from one and other and require quite a lot of attentive listening, but a safe place to start is Hounds of Love, which is regarded as her best work.

3. Y'all gonna throw me out but Bill Callahan is amazing and no one can convince me otherwise. I love his voice, it’s so deep and warm and his songs are wonderfully quirky. His album Dream River is beautiful and it makes me feel like I’m on my way home to my ranch after blowing all my money on coke and strippers and just as I’m about to get there, I lose control and crash my car and die while this album plays in the background.

4. Joanna Newsom, Ys. If you can get past her strange voice (it took me a while but I adore her sound now), this album has some of the best musical arrangements I’ve ever heard. And as a bonus, Bill Callahan worked on this album too. The songs are few but very long and Newsom has such a fun way of telling stories in her songs that it’s a wild ride that takes you to very strange places.

5. Björk. SPEAKING OF STRANGE Björk has been with me for years. Some people hate her and some people love her, but I think we can all agree that her songwriting is fantastic. She’s experimental and amazingly creative and her albums are all masterpieces. Björk is such a strange singer tho that some may just absolutely hate her and that’s 100% cool, I get it, but if you can’t stand her then at least look for covers by other artists bc her songs are otherworldly. Her latest album Utopia is breathtakingly beautiful if you want to try it. Homogenic is regarded to be her best album, although people who listen to her can’t seem to agree on one album bc they all have such personal relationships with her music that it is impossible to rank.

6. Radiohead. Here’s a goldmine of flawless albums for y'all. Similarly to Björk, Radiohead has a variety of albums and the fans can’t seem to agree on which is the best of all time. The earlier albums are more organic and have more of a garage band sound, but as the band got older and more popular their sound became more and more digital and absurd. The songs are a vast well of thought and attention to detail and I love the way these songs seem to have an endless amount of layers stacked on top of each other. Even to this day I can listen to any Radiohead song and find something new in it that I had not noticed before. My personal favourite albums are Kid A and King Of Limbs. And just a side note, the song Idioteque from Kid A is in my opinion one of the best songs of all time.

7. Queen, but y'all probably know of them by now. You have no idea how glad I am about the fact that this absolute diamond of a band has resurfaced from the brink of oblivion!! If aliens came to earth and asked me what is human art like, I’d hand them a Best of Queen album bc that’s the best we have to offer.

These are some of my favourites, but there’s so much more where that came from. These are just what I usually listen to if I’m just kicking it by myself, but if there’s some specific genre or mood you want recommendations for, I’m right here with my endless library of good jams 🌺🍵
