First Dance

“Lothíriel, why don’t you dance with Éomer?”

The princess stopped, cup halfway to her mouth and looked at her father. “I beg your pardon?”

“It is a ball, daughter.” Imrahil spoke with a kind smile. “Young people should be dancing.”

“I am an old soul.” She told him with a grin.

“Nonetheless.” He father waved away her excuse. “What is one dance between friends?”

Éomer was about to say something -she clearly didn’t want to be there, much less dance with anyone -when the princess spoke. “Of course, father.” She turned to him. “Shall we, Éomer King?”

“Yes.” He answered, incapable of saying no now that everyone was looking at him. “Please.”

She accepted his hand and they went to where the other couples were waiting for the music to start.

“I’m sorry you have to do this.” Éomer spoke once they were in position.

“What do you mean?” She asked him, that polite tone of her almost getting on his nerves.

“You don’t want to dance.” He told her bluntly. “I don’t think you even wanted to be in this party.”

She seemed surprised by his observation, then sighed. “You are not wrong, Your Majesty. There’s a lot of work to be done, and I won’t get it done being here.”

“Don’t you think you should rest on occasion?” He asked, out of curiosity.

“If I wish to rest, there are other pursuits that I enjoy. Balls are not one of them.” She scoffed. “They are a waste of time.”

The music started and they moved with the group.

“I hope this is not too terrible for you then.” Éomer whispered to her, a little of teasing sneaking in his voice.

“Why? Are you a bad dancer?” She teased back, that small grin back.

“Your feet are quite safe, My Lady.” He assured her. “But one can’t help but wonder if my conversational skills are enough to entertain you.”

She gave him a look he couldn’t quite understand.

“I think you’ll do, Éomer King.”

Lothíriel, The Judicious

First Meeting

“Éomer.” Aragorn came to greet his friend. “How are you?”

“I wish I’d come back under happier circumstances.” Éomer told the other man honestly.

“We all do.” Aragorn told him kindly. “When do you plan to leave?”

“By week’s end. We wish to give Théodren a proper burial as soon as possible.”

“I understand.” Aragorn put a comforting hand on Éomer’s shoulder. “Come. Let’s get this meeting over with.”

Éomer followed Aragorn inside the Council room. He wasn’t sure why the King of Gondor wanted him to be part of this. He knew this was about Gondor’s trade and supply, so he imagined there wasn’t any reason for him to be in it.

The room was full of old lords and not many that Éomer recognized. He saw Faramir and Imrahil, Prince of Dol Amroth, and his elder son -Elphir -, all men he could claim to know well. There was a woman beside Imrahil, but Éomer couldn’t see her face properly from his place.

Aragorn indicated a seat for him to take, then went to take his place as king. Pleasantries were quickly done with, and Éomer finally understood why Aragorn had asked him to be there. The Mark was in dire need of help after years of war and erratic ruling, thanks to Grímas’s machinations. Aragorn had been willing to help them as he could, but first they’d need to know the extent of the damage.

“”Princess Lothíriel.” Aragorn called, turning to the woman. “What can you tell us?”

Éomer saw the woman beside Prince Imrahil stand up, and he knew at once who she was. Imrahil had told him many tales about his young and bright daughter.

“I believe we are in conditions to offer our help to friends.” She told them firmly. “However, we need to know the extent of the help needed.”

An older man scoffed. “What does a child know of these matters?”

The princess arched a brow, her father frowned, but it was her brother who answered. “If our soldiers had swords to fight, food to eat and our healers had what they needed, it was thanks to Lothíriel, who administered our resources in the best way she could.”

Éomer was surprised by this information. He knew Imrahil and his sons had fought, but he didn’t know his daughter had provided for them during the war.

She ignored the older councilman, and turned her eyes directly to Éomer. “Éomer King.” She nodded at him. “Your people saved our city.” Her smile wasn’t exactly fake, but it was extremely polite. She believed her words to be true, but she was there on business only. “We will never be able to pay you for that. But we’d like to offer our assistance, if we can.”

Éomer was intrigued.
