Drive-Away Dolls

Arguably the most important representation of the year comes from a movie directed by one of the Coen brothers. Ethan Coen directs this wacky comedy that is very much in style for him.

Synopsis:

This comedy caper follows Jamie, an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian who desperately needs to loosen up. In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals along the way.

Lost Records: Bloom and Rage

A game had to be added to this list and here it is, the best one. From the creators who gave us Life is strange. Lost Records: Bloom and Rage tells the story of four friends who experience a transformative summer in 1995. After 27 years of no contact, Nora, Swann, Autumn, and Kat are reunited by fate and forced to confront the long-buried secret that made them agree to never speak again all those years ago. From the teaser alone it is obvious at least two of them dated.

Pluto

A Thai gl from GMMTV, known for its successful Thai dramas. The story is the telenovela cliche we've always wanted. Two girls in love. One gets in an accident and her twin takes her place to find out who was behind her accident, the other girl is blind. The twin has to fake being the real one so has to be in a relationship with the blind girl and of course falls in love with her. Match made in fanfic heaven.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

It was announced so long ago people are getting frustrated. However, with both a writer and a director now attached to the project, and the strikes over, we have every reason to believe we will finally get to see the hit novel, that centers the love story between two closeted Hollywood actresses, come to life. Whether you loved the novel or were indifferent and didn't see what the fuss was about, it is a very successful wlw romance and we want to see it on screen!

The Paying Guests

The director that brought us Carol adapting a book by the author of Fingersmith? Yes please!

Speaking to Indiewire, Haynes revealed he’s developing an adaptation of Sarah Waters’ 2014 novel The Paying Guests. “It’s a three-part limited series that would need to be a British production, but it’s a really great novel.” Set in post-WWI London, the drama is part lesbian love story and part murder mystery following a down-and-out widow and her daughter, the latter taking up a relationship with one of their lodgers. Waters also wrote Fingersmith, which was adapted into The Handmaiden by Park Chan-wook.

NCIS Hawaii season 3

One of our favorite pairings of last year, Kate and Lucy are the main couple of their show and they carry it well. They look good together, have progress and evolution in their relationship and have fun working together.

The Secret of Us

Thai channel CH3 is expected to hit us strong with this Thai gl. CH3 is big in Thailand so this one is a big deal. The story is the typical exes meet again trope and it's magnificent. It centers Doctor Fahlada, nicknamed Doctor Angel. She is trying to hide the pain after being abandoned by the woman she loved. But then...by chance that woman comes back into her life.

Whisper Me a Love Song

Our resident anime entry has to be Whisper me a love song. Based on a manga it is the story of Himari Kino. On the first day of entering high school, Himari Kino "falls" for her senior, Yori Asanagi, whom she watched singing with a band at the welcome party for new students. When Himari confesses her admiration to Yori, Yori misinterprets Himari's feelings as romantic love. However, before Yori realizes, she comes to fall for Himari anyway, and promises to win her affections for real.

Bad Sisters season 2

Bad Sisters is one of the best reviewed and hilarious shows on this list. Coming back for a season 2 was inevitable. Bibi, the lesbian sister, will keep entertaining us in 2024.

Station 19 season 7

One of the most enduring shows and wlw couples on TV are coming back for a season 7! That is a lot of seasons but Maya and Carina do still have that spark.

About Galaxy The Series

Part of the gl renaissance that is expected to go full force next year, this series is already hugely popular among Asian romance fans.

Synopsis:

‘About Galaxy’ is based on author Zezeho’s yuri of the same name, with a Thai title of “มูลค่าดาวล้านดวง”. The story revolves around Hong Yok, a designer who has a big scar on her face which led her to hide away from the public due to her inferiority complex. However, despite the incident, she doesn’t outright despise her, and instead… feels safe. What will happen to the two women?

Kay Cannon ("Blockers") will direct from a script co-written by Taylor Jenkins Reid? Staring a group of friends trying to stop their friend from getting married? And one of them is queer? We're all in!

Arcane (Season 2)

It seems like forever since we first watched Arcane but we're definitely looking forward to season 2. Needs no introduction.

Dream the Series

We already have enough Asian dramas in this list but we couldn't leave out one of the most anticipated gl, Dream. The story is that of a woman that sees a girl in her dreams every night only to meet her in real life. While in real life they are friends in her dreams they do much more. She thinks her friend doesn't know about that what she doesn't know is that she also remembers everything they do in their dreams.

Harley Quinn the Animated Series season 5

Another season of our favorite criminal duo Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy? Yes please and thank you. These two, and this particular iteration of them, might be the best representation American television has ever given us.

Chaser Game W

Chaser Game W is the first gl produced by TV Tokyo so it has a historic significance for the advancement of representation for queer women in Japan. First episode airs January 8. Based on manga series "Chaser Game" written by Hiroshi Matsuyama & illustrated by Yukitaro Matsuyama

The story:

synopsis: Itsuki has been working in the "Dynamic Dream" game company for five years and is now appointed as the lead for a big Japanese-Chinese collaboration project, which she is fully motivated to work on. However, it turns out the Chinese company team is led by her ex, Fuyu, whom she one-sidedly broke up with back in university! After breaking up with Fuyu, Itsuki never dated anyone else and chose to focus on her work, all while not coming out to her family and coworkers... But when her ex-girlfriend suddenly appeared in front of her, her feelings immediately started to sway. Meanwhile, Fuyu always resented Itsuki for breaking up with her without saying why. She takes charge of the project and pushes impossible tasks onto Itsuki. While Fuyu plots her revenge, Itsuki is rekindling her unrequited love. What will the outcome be for these two opposites?

Vigil season 2

The first couple of episodes of Vigil season 2 will technically be shown in December 2023 (in the UK only) but we'll basically be able to watch it beginning 2024 and we're looking forward to it!

Several upcoming TV shows and movies have cast actors that make it obvious they'll have lesbian and bi characters but until we know whether the representation will be enough to be worth watching we're holding off on making that other, more elaborate, list.

Dark Sun - Part 11 – Therapy time (NSFW – MENTIONS OF SEX, VIOLENCE AND ABUSE)

Authors note: Sorry it took me so long to get this to paper - or well text-document. I am working full time again and it is not easy balancing writing, work and social activities. The next one will probably take some time too, but i promise i will keep writing and finish this story, Thanks everyone for not losing patience with me :)

Beckett hurried to his apartment, trying not to think about how he just had behaved. The moment he started to pleasure himself, he was simply too disgusted with what he had done and decided to take a cold shower instead. However, it didn’t stop his thoughts from wandering back in time when he lay in bed, reliving the last few hours moment after moment. How could he have changed so much in his behaviour? Stop kidding yourself! he chided himself.. It isn’t that you are changed, she is. And you simply are obsessed with that girl.

He didn’t like it though. He needed to stop doing things he wasn’t comfortable with out of a tiny hope that she could like him again some day. She was basically a stranger to him now. He decided that he had to let the past go. It wouldn’t do either of them any good if he was behaving like a mad man around her because of their physical attraction. People changed, and he clearly needed to take some distance to find out what it was he wanted to do with his life. He needed to know who he was– without her. It’s simple. Just stay away from her! He nearly laughed out loud alone in his room. - That was the only thing he never had been able to do.

It took Joane exactly 5 minutes to get Antony to confess that their new boss – apparently a young man in a dark blazer named Harrington – forced him to do his job for him. He begged her to forgive him and even went so far as to point out that she probably could sue the Harrington guy since he breached the client-service contract that she had with him in person. Joane knew Antony would risk his job for her if Beckett decided that he would want to get rid of him. She didn’t think Beckett would do such a thing, but she couldn’t be sure about anything with him anymore after this stunt he just pulled … in a public space – in the presence of witnesses. Where was the publicly awkward, easily blushing man she once had known? It didn’t fit with him anymore. Apparently she wasn’t the only one that had changed.

Joane knew she should feel horrified about the thought that Beckett had used his position and to theoretically abuse her – if she hadn’t liked it so damn much. It still turned her on – her body was betraying her – again… He wasn’t the Beckett she had known before. The old Beckett had never before even wanted to talk about his family, let alone did he ever use his name to get something he wanted. He had always had this strange obsession to reach his goals without or even despite his family’s reputation. The only person out of his whole family he seemed to like was his older sister Katrina. Then again he envied her nearly as much as he liked her.

Joane had met Katrina Harrington only a few times, since she and her boyfriend had been busy travelling the world for work. It didn’t help that Beckett didn’t like visiting his family that much, since they hadn’t been very welcoming to Joane. Despite her attunement, she was a simple girl and she loved her life in her small apartment, she had a student job and liked playing Thief and clubbing with her friends.

Katrina however was driven and focussed nearly all of the time on her career. She was brilliant, smart and beautiful and about to marry her long-term boyfriend Jack. His parents were nearly as influential as the Harrington’s and he was a successful lawyer specialising in representing real-estate sharks all over the world. Joane had instantly disliked the guy. He had been slick, way too polite and of course he defended rich people making their money out of cheating or tricking non-magickal people out of their homes to build magickal communities in the best areas of cities. Nevertheless, Katrina seemed to be completely smitten with him, and so were Beckett’s parents. The wedding happened about a year after Beckett left. It had been broadly mediatised through every magical channel that existed - two extremely rich and influential families joining interested the whole magickal community. At the time, Joane had recorded the media coverage and watched it over and over again hoping to catch a sign of Beckett, but apparently he hadn’t been attending his own sister’s wedding.

Now Beckett apparently managed his father’s estates and used his name to get whatever he wanted. She should be upset about this behaviour, but “whatever he wanted” seemed to be her! It had taken her a few minutes to come back to her senses after the orgasm he had given her. If he would have revealed himself to her after pleasuring her, she would probably have begged him to take all of her. He still knew what she liked and even worse, he knew now even her darkest secret. She wanted to be angry, but she felt strangely relieved that there was at least one person that seemed to accept – and maybe even share - her tendencies.

Joane didn’t understand why he had gone to such extremes, but she did know now that the attraction she had been feeling between them was mutual, and even though she had been at his complete mercy, he had decided to pleasure her and not himself – it actually was kind of sweet, in a very strange and twisted way. Joane grimaced at her thoughts – sitting around thinking about the one guy she should avoid at all costs. This would not do her any good. However much her body craved his touch, she would not be able to ever trust him again with her feelings. Instead of confronting Beckett about it, Joane decided to ignore him. Perhaps he would confess or he wouldn’t, and she didn’t want to risk exposing Antony. So she decided to simply get back to her work. And oh … she desperately needed to get back to her work. Her next paper was due in a few months already and most importantly, there were patients scheduled for next week and she hadn’t been able to get herself to do the necessary theoretical and mental preparations.

The moment she got back to her office and treatment room, something didn’t seem right, she just couldn’t grasp what it was. Pivoting around she inspected every part of the room, but could find anything out of the ordinary. It was her plain and simple office room – these were the words she usually used when someone visited her. There was no decoration, nothing personal, it was a treatment room and normally this was how it was supposed to be, how she wanted it to be. So she didn’t understand why she felt suddenly so out of place in the room she had set up herself. Her olive green office chair was the only spot of colour in the room. The books that filled the shelves had always felt to her like a fortress of knowledge she could hide behind. For the last few years it had been her home, her retreat, where she felt safe and competent. Now however when she looked around she felt nervous. She could find nothing soothing in here anymore, a strange thought crossed her mind - her office felt cold and impersonal – even to herself. How was that the room that she defined as her safehouse. I am changed… she sighed deeply. It simply can’t be a good sign that I am feeling out of place in my own place. She buried the thought right away. It was a dangerous thought, since it meant Beckett had a bigger and a more emotional impact on her than she had feared.

A week later

As usual Joane was already seated in her chair, going over her notes and preparing the questions she needed to evaluate to finish her analysis. Now and then her gaze flickered to the corner of the room across from her, a slight smile playing on her lips. A bunch of sunglowflowers now filled the room with a warm glow. Joane was amazed how good she felt about being in the same room with these flowers. Usually she felt threatened by anything involving the word “sun” since she felt so hopeless to ever be able to use her so called innate powers ever again.

Passing the flowershop yesterday, Joane had immediately been drawn to them. – like magick… At the thought she felt a slight urge to chuckle and the corners of her mouth crooked up just a bit. The flowers emitted a faint sweet smell that reminded her about morning dew in the early summer months. And curiously even though flowers - scientifically proven - did not have that kind of power, she could swear they slightly heated the room.

A slight knock on her door announced the arrival of her new patient and Joane refocussed before calling her in. As usual she only knew a shortened first name and the gender of her patient so she could face them unbiased and write an anonymous report. The moment the girl named Kat entered the room, Joane asked herself if destiny wanted to fuck her up really hard. In front of her stood Katrina Harrington, even though she seemed like a very sad and shabby version of her former self. Dark shadows bloomed below her red puffy eyes and made her look old and broken. She didn’t wear any make-up and her clothes – though expensive – didn’t seem to fit properly anymore. Katrina clearly had lost some weight and didn’t care what she looked like anymore.

This was the women that had turned her away coldhearted from the mansion when she was looking for Beckett. Suddenly Joane saw herself standing in front of the huge iron gate, tearing at it in her rage and grief, tears running down her cheeks. Katrina had been standing behind the window of her mansion looking down at her, her eyes sad but cold before turning away. Joane had been standing at the gate for hours but no one let her in. She had often asked herself during the last few years what had caused Beckett’s family to hate her so much that they even denied her a simple closure. Joane was about to tell Katrina to get the hell out of her room, but there was something very wrong about the way Katrina looked and behaved. So Joane clenched her teeth and gestured briskly for Katrina to come in and sit down. It wasn’t right to turn away a person in need and Joane wouldn’t lower herself to the same shitty level of behaviour Katrina once had given her.

Katrina looked at her like she was about to burst in tears. Being near the women she had despised for so many years, Joane couldn’t bring herself to bite back a small sarcastic comment, cocking one eyebrow up, waiting for Katrina to say something. “Well well…. To what do I owe the pleasure of your noble presence Miss Harrington?”

To her credit and to Joane’s utter satisfaction, Katrina flinched and looked down at the floor, her shoulders slumping down. She remained silent for a few very long moments, and Joane though she would simply turn around and leave without further notice.

“Hi Joane” Katrina’s voice was barely a whisper. “I- I would understand if you would just refuse to hear me out. God knows I earned nothing less...”

Joane sighed in defeat and pointed to the couch. This women in front of her clearly had been through a lot. She simply didn’t have it in her to send her away if she could possibly help. Furthermore Joane just died to know what had caused this change in the once rich and perfect Katrina Harrington. “Listen Katrina, I will not lie to you. We have a past and it is not a pleasant one.” Joane took her notebook and opened a new file, trying to get back into her routine. “I will do my job here, but I will not be your friend. I usually begin to ask my patient WHY they have come to seek me out, but I think with you my first question will be why have you come to see ME? I know I am good at what I do, but there are other people out there that could probably help you better than I do, considering our relation?”

Katrina’s eyes went wide. “ I – Thank you Joane. I – me and my family, … we were so horrible towards you. I- I mean I hoped you would at least listen to me but I feared,….”

“Listen Katrina, I am not here to talk about our past. It is over and I do not want to get back to that moment. It took me a long time to get a life again, and I am not going to waste my time tearing up old wounds.” Joane knew she sounded a bit harsh but this threatened to become too personal for her. She hadn’t even talked to Beckett about their encounter a week ago and she still wasn’t sure how she felt about it.

“Oh… ok.. I - hoped – nevermind. Please do give me a second” Katrina took a deep breath before continuing slightly more composed. “I came to you because I know that you already know my family and you know my - .. – my husband.” Joane took a small note about the tone in which she spoke of Jack. Apparently the fairytale had gone bad. “I knew – well… You never liked Jack, and I couldn’t understand it then. To me he seemed like the perfect husband. He was the perfect husband for my parents at least. That was enough for me for a long time. I even overlooked that he had some very dark moods and strange behaviours from time to time. I – I don’t know if you want to hear what I am about to tell you, it but I think it is necessary I--- I have to tell you about mine and Beckett’s childhood a little bit before I continue, is that ok?”

Joane took a deep breath and steadied herself. She knew Katrina was right. She needed to know about childhood issues to be able to have the whole picture and help Katrina. So she gestured for her to continue.

Katrina closed her eyes and braced her head on her hands. She looked positively miserable. “As you know, Beck and I have been raised rather….- let’s call it structured. What you probably do not know is how far my father’s perfectionism went. Beckett never liked talking about it.” Joane wanted to object but decided against it. Beckett had actually talked to her about his feelings towards his family, but I wouldn’t help Katrina to know this.

“It was normal for us to speak our morning prayers in 4 languages without flaws before we were allowed to go to the bathroom. My mother was not always as you have known her. She once behaved like a loving mother – even though she always was kind of reserved, she cared about us children - perhaps too much. I was ten when I first saw my mother take the blame for a stain on a rare asian carpet dad had received as a gift of a Chinese ambassador. Beck and I had played with some watercolor outside of our assigned playroom. Dad went into rage-mode and beat her – oh not in the face no.. He beat her straight in the stomach yelling at her that she was his wife and as such she had to be perfect.” Katrina’s voice slightly broke and Joane’s eyes went wide in horror. She was not the biggest fan of Beckett’s mother but this kind of abuse was horrifying.

“Beckett was still too small to remember. Mom didn’t even cry at first, but then she saw me standing in the doorway. At her reaction dad turned around and at that moment he seemed to notice that there was a better way to punish her. If he would punish us for her flaws, she would become the perfect women he was seeking. The moment he threatened to hurt me or Beck, she broke. The women I have never seen crying in her life begged and sobbed so that he wouldn’t hurt us kids.” Katrina closed her eyes, breathing deeply, trying to regain control.

Joane had stopped taking notes and analysing the situation, already deciding to not include this case in her research. She was too emotional about it anyways and needed to at least have one part of her life that was not biased by the Harrington’s. Katrina continued talking as if she couldn’t stop herself, like a weight lifting off her chest, “He started to hurt us only slightly at first every time she didn’t please him. When we got older, it got less frequent but worse, as if for it to have an impact, the hurt needed to increase. By then our mom was a changed person. She was cold and impassive towards us as if she could protect us better this way. She was a perfect wife, operating like a robot. But she was older and not the beautiful young women she once had been. This seemed to be enough to provoke my father. It got worse for me until I decided to leave home at the first chance when I met Jack. He was successful and intelligent and my father … lets just say, for the first time in my life I seemed to have done something right. He even gave me a personalized leather bound family history book. I have never felt so proud in my life.” Katrina smiled at the memory but it was a hopeless smile that ceased quickly.

“I was dating Jack for about 9 months and we were already engaged when he first beat me over a small typo I had overlooked in a meeting assessment. I was shocked and he apologized the day after, but not without pointing out that I should avoid doing such a mistake again. I should know that he was a perfectionist at his work and that he expected nothing less of me. At that moment I went all cold. My parents were so proud of me and I didn’t want to upset dad, so I decided to accept the apology and try to do better the next time to not upset him anymore. You probably know the rest.. He – he abused me violently every time he felt like I did something wrong. He beat me more and more often over small mistakes or when my dress was too short, b..but I found excuses for him every time. Mom was the first to see the signs and tried to get to me, so I decided to stay away from my family not wanting her to get involved and to be hurt again.” Katrina took a deep breath and paused shortly. Joane looked at her questionably

“I … - The day you came to our home… when I left you at the gate when Beckett was forced to go to Japan… It was that day that Jack beat me so hard I got a fresh bloody bruise in my face. I … I just couldn’t let anyone see me ... I was so ashamed, I .. I am so sorry now. I was selfish and afraid and you suffered for it…”

Joane didn’t want to feel compassionate but she knew that lots of women felt that way and it actually was a normal reaction. It still sucked but at least she knew now that it hadn’t been because of her that Katrina had turned her away that day. “Katrina… thanks - I guess - for telling me this. I think I needed to hear this, for you but also for myself. I never understood why you turned me away that day. I know it seems harsh to pressure you but this can’t be why you sought me out. My speciality is the loss or the alternation of magickal powers due to psychological stress. Are your powers affected?”

Katrina looked up – suddenly alarmed. “You aren’t going to tell this to anyone are you?” she asked?

“N- no I am bound to my doctors-patient secrecy.” Joane replied warily. What had happened to Katrina?

Katrina nodded slightly more confident “My powers have changed… You know I am a Water-Att? Well… my attunement changed somehow – and not to the best. When I finally saw that my marriage with Jack was about to end up like my parents, I decided to get a divorce. I told my mother first and I saw the fear creep into her eyes. Then my father came into the room and immediately knew something was off when he saw my mother. The moment she told him what I was about to do, he started to blame her for it. Surely she had put this idea into my head. He yelled at her that Jack was the best thing that ever happened to his family, with Beckett being a disgrace he had had to ship off to Japan to save his mind from growing to lax out of something so stupid as love and now me planning to ruin the last hope of the family…”

Katrina’s voice started to tremble. “I felt so angry and hopeless and I blacked out for a moment. I- I only remember I felt like I needed to stop him before he could hurt my mother again,… and then... I can’t properly describe it,… I just lost control of my magick. It felt like a living creature to me, it crawled out of my mind and just acted on its own… and then I don’t know how - It,… well - it started to draw the liquid out of my father’s body. Before I knew what had happened, he just crumbled to the floor and didn’t get up anymore… I think I killed my father!”

Joane set there her mouth hanging slightly open for a short moment. She resumed her professional self before Katrina could notice and nodded calmly “How did your mother react? Your mind blacking out slightly is a normal protection reaction of your body. It was probably a very traumatical experience. What we need to find out is if it was the act of killing that was a shocking experience or the fact that your magick acted on its own.”

At Katrina’s irritated look, she tried to explain in more detail “We need to know what the first problem was, so we can know what caused your magick to change and provoke your body’s reaction. It could have been triggered by rage or sadness or confusion or because of feeling detached from yourself after such a long abusive marriage…. In order to help you I need to dig deeper and ask you a lot of quite personal questions. Are you ok with that?” When Katrina slowly nodded Joane secretly gulped at the task in front of her. At the same time her mind went back to Beckett. How much did he know? How was he feeling? Had she been inconsiderate at some point towards him? Why did she care so much?...
