i’m in a movie mood and so far i’ve watched pap, lost in karastan, incendiary, death at a funeral, secret life and anna karenina. what do you recommend next from matty??

OMG, HI ANON! I was so surprised and happy to see this little message because I...don’t really get these messages, so HI AND THANKS! Now your question: 

If you’re sticking only to stand-alone films, there are two in particular that are missing from your marathon here that you NEED to see: “Frost/Nixon” and “In My Father’s Den.” The rest that you haven’t seen yet range from pretty awful to just okay. So once you’ve seen these two, you will have seen (in my opinion) all his best films. Now if it’s TV shows or even miniseries/limited series you want, well, THAT is a different list. ;)

I don’t know how old you are, Anon, or where you’re from, so I’ll offer the following notes: 

1. Both of these (I believe) are rated R, so...just puttin’ that out there. 

2. “Frost/Nixon” is in my top three Matthew films (along with “In My Father’s Den” and “Death at a Funeral”; for the record, “P&P” comes in fourth, but it’s very close between these top four for me). It’s based on a play (already a bonus point in my book) and concerns a famous interview of Richard Nixon after his presidency ended that delved into the Watergate scandal in his own words. It’s a remarkable historical/biographical drama. Each and every performance by the entire cast is superb. The writing is of the highest quality. And while Matthew is, erm, not at his hottest (in all those 70s clothes, giant glasses, and blonde mullet-y hair), he has a great role. 

3. “In My Father’s Den” is not a film you want to watch if you’re already feeling sad/depressed because it is not a happy movie. However, it is just gorgeous. And gripping. The writing is good but not great, but Matthew in particular elevates the movie to an emotional level that rips your heart right out. The young woman who takes the other main role is also excellent (especially for her age at the time--so good). It’s heartbreaking, but stellar. (Bonus: Matthew is at peak hotness. Just. Guh. So gorgeous it’s like...not fair.) Note: if you’re in the U.S., this is VERY hard to track down. I think it’s pretty tough to find in parts of Europe as well. It’s a New Zealand film, so it’s easiest to find in NZ and AUS.

Hi! I'm a big MM fan and love your site. I live in the U.S. and am having a difficult time getting some of Matthew's works - particularly Lost in Karastan and In My Father's Den. Do you have any suggestions? I have looked everywhere and I'm thinking that IMFD may never have been distributed for Region 1. Thanks, jromane202

Lost in Karastan is especially hard to find, I agree. It was only released on dvd and I’m not sure you can read it correctly in the USA.

In My Father’s Den is ok if you can get the bluray as it’s also region A/1. But it’s pretty expensive. No such luck with the dvd as I think it’s only region 2.

Have you tried looking for a region free dvd player? It would probably be easier with Matthew’s work…

Does anyone have tips regarding these two movies?
