“There’s only one bed.”

“There’s only one bed.”  You said pulling up short as you entered the hotel room you were meant to be sharing with Seiya Sanada.   You had been traveling with Los Igobernables de Japon for the past several weeks, working as their personal assistant.  Given there were five members of the group, you shared a room with one of them on a rotating basis.  Tonight, however, was the first time rooming with Sanada.  He was usually booked with Tetsuya Naito as the two liked to hit the night scene together.

“Seiya, what are you doing?”  You asked gesturing at his belongings.  

“I’m taking my clothes out.  They get wrinkled in the suitcase so I am going to hang them up.”  He explained, looking at her as if he clearly believed her to be lacking in intelligence.  

“Don’t unpack.  We need to fix this room situation.”  You said waving your hand towards the single queen size bed.  

“Did you not see them turn away the people in front of us?  They are sold out.  There is no other room.”   Seiya said continuing his unpacking.   You vaguely remembered overhearing something like that, but you had to be sure, marching over to the phone beside the bed and impatiently dialing the receptionist.   After a moment your shoulders slumped as the operator confirmed what Seiya had just said.  Hanging up you looked around the room in despair.  There wasn’t even a couch in the room one of you could sleep on.

“Told you so.”  Seiya said smugly.  

“Aren’t you going out with Naito?”  You spat grumpily at the irritating man.  

“No.   Naito is with his girlfriend tonight.”   He responded, nose wrinkling in distaste.  

“Naito has a girlfriend?”  You were shocked at this bit of news.  You personally had seen Naito and Sanada return to their hotel room with multiple different women over the past few weeks.  

Seiya’s smirk returned full force as he looked over at you.  “Naito has many girlfriends.”   He informed her before announcing he was going to shower and asking her to order some room service for their dinner.  

You placed the order for dinner before flopping back on the bed your mind racing a mile a minute.   You didn’t know how you were going to get through the night sharing a bed with Sanada. Despite the fact that he was an asshole and a womanizer, you still found him overwhelmingly attractive.  Keeping your distance from him you had successfully hidden that fact.  You didn’t know if you could do that sharing a bed with him.  It would be incredibly unprofessional of you to have sex with him.  Aside from that was the fact you didn’t even know if he found you attractive.  The man barely paid you any mind.  

Hearing the door to the bathroom open, your eyes flew open and you sat up quickly, your breath catching as Sanada stepped out with only a towel around his waist, droplets of water dripping from his hair and down his chest.   You knew you were staring, but you couldn’t seem to drag your eyes away from the perfection of his body.  

“If you’re going to look at me like that, you better be prepared to do something about it.”   He said nonchalantly walking to his suitcase and pulling out some boxers before returning to the bathroom.   A knock on the door saved you from berating yourself as you were distracted with making room for the dining cart and setting everything up for the two of you to eat.  

Dinner was quiet, Seiya finding a movie to watch while you concentrating intently on your meal and avoided staring at him.   After you were finished and the cart was shuttled outside you made a beeline for the bathroom, needing a reprieve from Seiya’s presence.

Sketchfan-da’s fave wrestling title belts part 4:New Japan Pro championships continued

So with the weekend G1 special set to pass and crown New Japan Pro’s first ever IWGP US champion in their first ever major USA show,here’s part two of my fave titles.

First up of course,we have the main story of the G1 special,the newly created IWGP United States championship. Now compared to the WWE Universal title belt,I find this little number is that rare breed that not only manages to pull off having a red leather strap,but work well with it. And given how NJPW treats its midcard belts,with the NEVER and Intercontinental belts deemed main event worthy,this little number could go on to be a great one. So as its only a recent belt,it can’t be calld prestigious...not yet anyways. But the design does the trick,it’s eyecatching and compared to the WWE US title,it’s not as overly loud in saying what it is. WWE’s us title is pretty much a glorified stars and stripes in belt form,as if saying Look how patriotic this is!! Whereas as this belt,from its centreplate to its sideplates,are more sublted,and of course,surrounded by gold.And of course,a possible long term storyline would be Tetsuya naito seeking to keep his promise to do as bad,if not worse than what he did with the IC title.

Up next,the IWGP Junior heavyweight championship. Essentially a smaller,but nonethless equally glorious little twin brother to world championship belt,its contrast to the latter,gold with silver trim,is clear in the silver with gold trims,and a similar theme to their centre and side playes,with the golden lion logo and the little plates baring what’re of course,the numerous past holders of the belt,highlighting its prestige and history. And with this belt those are two key words,prestige an history.Establised n 1986 New Japan pro has always valued their cruiserweghts,especially compared to WWE,what with their handling of their old light heavyweight title,their treatment of both versions of the cruiserweight championship and the major ball dropped with the momentum the CWC genrated for them,crusiers/jrs in New Japan,whether natives of the land of the rising sun,or talented gaijin from around the world,from the States and Canada to Europe and Mexico,have been able to display their ringwork especially at the Dominion and Wrestle Kingdom shows,and even have whole tournaments dedicated to showcasing their chops,such as the annual Best of the Super Juniors tournament. from August 5 1996 to Novermber 5th 1997 thi belt was made even more prestigious when it was made a part of the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J-Crown making its holder the bearer of 8 different cruiser and jr heavyweight titles from around the wrestling world. Yes the wiki link does not lie,the Octo J crown even had the WWF lightheavyweight title among its ranks,as the McMahon umbrella fogot they even had this belt,then remembered when they tried and failed to match up against the excellent cruiserweight title scene WCW had at the time. Its bearers included legends such as Jushin Thunder Liger,The great Sasuke and of course,its most famous holder in its brief epic history,Yoshihiro Asai,aka Ultimo Dragon.

You may be all familia wth the second image of course,which at this point saw Dragon win two more belts,including the WCW cruiserweight championship. Meaning andmaking Dragon the bearer of 10 different championships that he even defended,and the only man to hold both a wcw and wwf title at the same time,not couting of course the unification matches held at the end of the car and trainwreck invasion storyline in 2001. Of course the IWGP jr heavyweight belt by itself is no less awesome or grand,just going by its holders alone. From current stars like Kushida,LIDJ members Bushi and Hiromu “Kamaitachi” Takahashi,current IWGP world title contender and best in the world star Kenny Omega and his best frenemy the Gold Star Kota Ibushi,Low Ki and Prince “Finn Balor” Devitt,to the late great Owen Hart and of course,the most famous cruiserweight and Japanese wrestling star,Jushin Thunder Liger. This belt has not once lost its shine and will only continue to be the bar that many set and raise.

Match of the Year: For me personally, it has got to be Omega vs. Naito at the G1 final, it was an amazing match that had me jumping out of my seat throughout, the table spot, the post DDT, scary stuff, but amazing, plus this showed Naito’s final ascent into the Wrestle Kingdom main event, after dealing with the person that cost him spot last year because storytelling. (Honorable mentions, the Omega vs Okada trilogy, Walter vs ZSJ, and DIY vs The Revival vs AOP Takeover Orlando)

Wrestler of the Year: before saying this I would like to warn you, it’s not Okada *boos from the crowd* I know, I know, but he is undoubtedly the Years best wrestler and has all the awards and matches to prove it, so my list is gonna look at his opponent at next years Wrestle Kingdom, Tetsuya Naito, the man who has had the best told story of finally reaching where he should have been all those years ago, abd he’s been putting on cracking matches all year long as well with the likes of Ishii abd Tanahashi, And had just a spectacular G1 run to Cap it off for the leader of Los Igobernables de Japon (honorable mentions, Omega, Marty Scurll, Dalton Castle, Keith Lee, Travis Banks, and Pete Dunne)

Tag Team of the Year: This one is difficult, the Hardy’s returned, The Usos and New Day are on fire, War Machine took over Japan, and so many more great teams have been tearing it up, but my winner has got to be (please don’t lynch me) The Young Bucks, they have throughout this year been the y’all of the wrestling industry, and have had some downright classics while doing it as well, their match with the Hardy’s, Ropongi Vice, The Lucha Bro’s, I understand they are not for everyone, but you can’t deny they have made the biggest impact out of any Tag Team this year on the wrestling business (honorable mentions: CCK, RPG3K, Sanada abd Evil, KES, War Machine, Chosen Bro’s, etc.)

Moment of the Year: another hard choice, but for me it has to be Shibatas “return” at the G1 final, imagine for a moment that after a night of excellent wrestling, a finish to the biggest tournament in the world, and another chapter in a story still to be finished, everyone is talking about a wrestler who came down to the ring, and took a simple bump, and said he was not dead, that is a moment, and probably the most important one this year has had especially following the circumstances that led to this moment (Honorable mentions: Omega ducking the rainmaker from exhaustion, Travis Banks winning the Progress Title, the Return of Daryl the cat from the dead, and Suzuki forcing a tie with Okada, meaning he had to have the the third match with Omega)

Feud of the Year: It took all of my power not to put Daryl and Fale, if had a resurrection damn it, but I have to go with the answer everyone is expecting, Omega vs Okada, it produced three of the year’s best matches, the story only grew after each match, and this match did what every feud should seek to achieve, make both guys more over by the end, increase the value of what they are fighting for, and bring more eyes to the product, and you can’t argue with the results, NJPW has more eyes watching it then ever before (including my own as of this year) abd that’s down to an amazing roster, the highest quality wrestling the world has ever seen, and the work Okada abd Omega put in to their matches to force eyes on the product. (Honorable mentions, Daryl vs Fale, Daryl vs Death, Naito vs Ishii, Pete Dunne vs Travis Banks, and BulletClub vs WWE, Kushida vs Hiromu Takahashi, Scurll vs Osprey)

So today’s subject is of course,New Japan Pro Wrestling,one of if not THE top Japanese “puroresu” promotion around today,rocking the world with its annual Wrestle Kingdom show,plus its tournaments like the Best of Super Juniors and the upcoming G1 climax,plus their special first ever US show with the tournament to crown their first ever champion for their new IWGP United States champion,it seems only fitting to cover it as today’s topic subject.

So first up of course,the main belt itself,the now officially 30 years old Internationa Wrestling Grand Prix world heavyweight championship. Since its inception in 87,this belt has been one of,if not THE msot covetted prize in wrestling today. Its design alone,which as I mentioned in my coverage of the Progress titles,blends gold and silver together in design that is majestic and elegant,the centre plae pretty much saying what it is,as it also bares the lion seal of the promotion,with the sideplayes likely listing its prevous champions,as the centreplate bares its current title holder’s name. Its prestige alone is seen in the list of its champions,from current champion Rainmaker Kazuchika Okada,who is now one yea into his current reign,having netted a string of five star matches,with his two recent bouts with the Cleaner Kenny Omega having gone and hit 6 and 6.5 stars from Dave Meltzer,to Hiroshi Tanahashi,Tetsuya Naito,Shinsuke Nakamura,Vader,Keiji Mutoh/The Great Muta,Shinya Hashimoto,Togi Makabe and Aj Styles. Of course its track record has one or two marks against it,among them being Bob Sapp,whose title reign was a result of promotion founder Antonio Inoki and his obsessive phase with incorporating MMA into NJPW,and Brock “Overrataed BItch” Lesnar,who forfeited due to supposed problems with a working visa...yet didn’t even bother to give back the belt at the time.

Up next the IWGP Interconinental title,introduced in 2011,its first title holder was MVP and its subsequent reigns from Masato Tanaka and Hirooki Goto saw a it as just a midcard title,until the King of Strong Style Shinsuke Nakamura came alon with a 313 day reign that saw him elevate it to the status of being one of the triple crown belts of NJWP,being worthy in its own right to be a main event title,its holders including many former IWGP world champs,La Sombra,kenny Omega and Michael Elgin. From 2012 to 2016, Nakamura held the IWGP Intercontinental Championship for a record five times and defended it at four consecutive Wrestle Kingdom events.The title was also associated with Nakamura as it was he who personally introduced the current title belt design shortly into his first reign in August 2012. He was outspokenly disapproving of the first belt design with bronze plates on a black strap for its resemblance to a 10 yen coin and saw it as a mockery of the IWGP.The new design featured gold plates on a white strap. The white strap was unprecedented for the IWGP,and symbolized a clean slate for its holder to add to and define.Over the years, the title belt's physical condition got progressively worse, most notably during the reign of Tetsuya Naito, who began systematically destroying the belt, forcing NJPW to have it repaired in June 2017.

Next we have the third of New Japan pro’s triple crown of main event belts,the NEVER openweight championship. NEVER is an acronym of the terms "New Blood", "Evolution", "Valiantly", "Eternal", and "Radical" and was a NJPW-promoted series of events, which featured younger up-and-coming talent and outside wrestlers not signed to the promotion. To date its list of title holders have mostly been heavyweights in their 30s and 40s,but the day may come someday,sooner or later. Its design is simple yet effective in tis elegance,a simple and classic gold plating and black leather strap,the matches associated with this title have been some of the most vicious,brutal hard hitting in NJPW history,quite impressive for a belt that’s been around since Novermber 2012 with only 10 champions...of course when said title holders are men like current champ Minoru Suzuki,the stone pitbull Tomohiro Ishii,the unchained gorilla Togi makabe,the wreslter Katsuyori Shibata and Los Igobernables de Japon brusier EVIL? It’s no wonder....
