Imagine a krakoan podcast

~ Exodus and Apocalypse are on (for some reason) and they barely say anything the entire time. It's a short episode.

~ The X-terminators are on. Allison tries to take it seriously. Laura is only halfway interested and would honestly rather be doing something else. Tabby and Jubilee keep fooling around with each other and won't stop interrupting. At some point, they kiss "for the fans". Tabby blows her own mic up and part of the table. Luckily, it's krakoa so it grows back. By the end of the episode, half the room is charred and smoking. It's a fan favorite episode.

~ Shaw is on one episode. He spends nearly the entire time sipping brandy and talking business (some of it unethical). Unusually well received episode.

~ Generation X (90's) reunites for an episode. Monet acts like she doesn't want to be there. She's lying and Paige can tell. Angelo and Everett are carrying the conversation. Jubilee won't stop talking. Jono sits watching it all. It's a nice little high school reunion.

~ The O5 comes together. Unfortunately, Hank couldn't be there. They reminisce about their teenage shenanigans. They wonder what things would have been like were they not brought together. They express grief over the challenges they've faced and the trauma of being a mutant, but also celebrate all the good that came from it as well. They make plans to hang out some time. Kinda somber but overall good vibes on this one.

~ Deadpool is on. How did he get here? No one knows. He's already here though, so let's hear what he has to say. He rambles, bouncing from topic to topic with seemingly no end in sight. Occasionally, he'll drop an almost conspiracy theory level fun fact in the conversation. "Hey, did you know that weapon x is one of a handful of top-secret super soldier programs started by the US? And that a bunch of superheroes are superheroes because of it? And that they're still doing experiments like the one that made me like this?" He removes his mask. "It's like one big freaky web of lies!" How does he know that? No one knows. No one's inclined to believe him anyway. In fact, all anyone DOES know is that this episode will probably be thrown out.

~ Selene is on the show. She claims to want to build a fanbase. She probably just wants people to eat. She spends the whole episode explaining the occult and trying to recruit people. She isn't allowed back but the episode is highly rated amongst the audience (particularly female viewers).

~ The New Mutants are on. Everyone shows up, save for Amara. Doug was there but had to leave for council duties. Illyana won't take her feet off the table. She also has a half-finished jar of what is probably coffee. Dani warns her to slow down on that stuff, but Illyana shrugs her off. They look back on their days of fighting demons occasionally and watching TV shows together. They joke on Magneto's sleeveless purple onesie from when he was their headmaster. Rahne says she kinda liked it. None of them believe her and they all laugh. Berto keeps getting in the camera to check himself out. Dani yells at him to sit down. When he finally decides to sit, he jumps in Sam's lap. Sam, of course, plays along and clutches Berto tighter while he dramatically throws his arms round Sam's neck. The ladies find their silliness hysterical. Highly rated episode and people want them back.

~ It's X-Factor this time around. Lorna, Terry, Jamie, and Guido show up. Lorna and Terry are actually trying to engage and have conversation. Guido keeps turning everything into a joke. Either that or telling a story about "this one time". Jamie is irritated he keeps doing it. Despite that, Lorna and Terry try to stay on topic. At some point, Guido asks Jamie if he would ever fuck one of his dupes. Jamie declines (though he's had this thought before) saying that he's not gay so he wouldn't. Guido counters asking if sex with yourself is gay sex or just masturbation. This debate continues for at least 30 mins. In the end it's revealed that Jamie (prime) was never there, just one of his dupes. To everyone's surprise, the people want Guido back for another one.

So what the Hell does Disney’s Hocus Pocus have to do with The Sandman?

 Some people have questioned why I have shared Hocus Pocus content to my “Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman” Facebook group. It’s not just because it is Halloween related and Halloween aesthetics turn up a lot in The Sandman.  It very much all has to do with the Hecate.  

In Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman we have the Three-in-One, the Triple Goddess.  Hecataea (goddess(es) of witchcraft and magick, who also doubles as The Fates, and The Furies AKA The Kindly Ones.     

Back in 1969 DC Comics introduced “The Three Witches” as the hosts of one of their horror anthology comics.   Cain, Abel, Lucien, Eve (The Raven Woman), The Mad Mod Witch (Fashion Thing), Destiny, and The Hecateae all started as hosts for the old horror anthology comics.  Cain hosted The House of Mystery.  Abel hosted The House of Secrets.  Lucien hosted Tales of Ghost Castle and the three Witches (Hecataea) hosted The Witching Hour.

Here the Maiden, Mother, and Crone used the “Modern” names of Cynthia, Mildred, and Mordred.  To reaffirm that these are their new names, they tell these names to Morpheus in issue 2 of The Sandman.  Cynthia’s look was likely loosely inspired by Sabrina the Teenage Witch. 

Three witches, or “Weird sisters” was a image popular in literature and folklore soldified thanks to the cultural influences of the likes of William Shakespeare with his own Weird Sisters.

The maiden, Mother, and Crone turn up a lot in pop culture, often unnoticed.

Granny Weatherwax (Crone), Nanny Ogg (Mother), Magrat Garlick (Maiden).  

Disney’s Gargoyles The Weird Sisters are   Luna, Phoebe, and Selene (a moon theme which is common with the three in one.  Waxing, full, and waning.)

Though the age distinction isn’t there it’s still a representation of the Three-in-One.  They are never separate and they function as one.  They also tend to appear the way they want to be seen or the way people expect them to be.  For example, when Demona was looking at them, they were a set of elderly female gargoyles but that is not how MacBeth saw them.

Sabrina and her aunts.   This one might be a bit of a stretch but you have three witches who are rarely apart so you have the trifecta and Sabrina, herself, is clearly the maiden.  Though the Netflix Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ironically uses the aunts to pay homage to DC”s Cain and Abel I’ll use the sitcom version here.

In the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina The Weird Sisters are literally Prudence, Agatha and Dorcas.

The Addams Family features it, but it might be pure accident.   You have Wednesday (Maiden), Morticia (Mother), and Grandmama (Crone).

Now we have the Hex Girls from Scooby Doo.  I Love this little “Eco Goth” band.  Not quite the conventional Maiden / Mother/ Crone however you could argue that Thorn is the Crone in this instance, Dusk is the maiden, and Luna is the mother. I pick these roles for purely superficial reasons here since Dusk has the child-like pigtails and Thorn is clearly the most dominant / leader and I perceive her as the oldest.      

There are the sisters of Charmed.   Not quote Maiden / Mother / Crone but definitely meant as a trio of witches who aren’t complete without the others.  

Adelaide (Crone), Auntie Whispers (Mother), and  Lorna (Maiden) from Over the Garden Wall.  This one is hard to spot until you realize the connection between Adelaide, Auntie Whispers, and Lorna.  Once you make the connection and realize the family bond and magick which binds the three you start to see the Maiden / Mother / and Crone aspects in their depictions.    Adelaide being the older sister, Auntie Whispers who is the mother figure for Lorne, who is the innocent maiden possessed by an evil spirit.  

Another trio is The Witches of Eastwick though not quite Maiden, Mother, and Crone, it felt worth a mention.

Marvel attempted it’s own version of “The Witches” with Jennifer Kale, Satana and Topaz.  

Though speaking of the Virgin Mary one could argue that it was actually a a subversive triple Goddess mention at the end of Goethe’s Faust Part 2.  When Faust ascends to Heaven we get this line:  (Translation from A. S. Kline)

“Virgin, Mother now, and Queen, Goddess, grant your mercies!“

and

“Here, grows to reality: The indescribable, Here, is done: Woman, eternal, 12110 Beckons us on.“

And now to Hocus Pocus.

In Disney’s Hocus Pocus you have The Sanderson Sisters.  A bungling group of witches who feel like they came crawling out of a horror anthology comic book with their antics and dark humor. Sarah is the Maiden, Mary is the Mother, and Winifred, The leader, is obviously the Crone.   (Note: Queen is a more polite alternate name for the crone aspect of the traditional three-in-one).

With Hocus Pocus, though I cannot prove it, I strongly suspect The Sanderson Sisters weren’t just inspired by the traditional Maiden, Mother, and Crone, but rather specifically the version from DC’s The Witching Hour comics, which in turn were used as the Hecataea in Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman.

This Day in X-Project - September 23

2015: Tandy makes a journal entry about London being done, being on her way to Milan, and being partied out. Alex makes an Instagram cross post from the world’s largest ball of twine. Alex makes an unscheduled detour. Wanda is less than pleased to see Quentin’s designs for a tattoo. Wanda makes a journal post inviting people to join her at Harry’s after her Quentin Quire quagmire. Jean texts Wanda about Quentin’s age. Lorna texts Wanda to see if she’s ok after her post.

2016: The Dulcet Sound of My Voice: Hope A. reports what she observed on her spying mission and a plan is made; Hope A. makes arrangements for the other sponsor to be dealt with by Emma; Doug prepares for the honey trap and executes the plan.

2017: Psi War: Xavin posts to the journals asking what happened, Amanda replies with news of Quentin’s death, unaware his psyche survived and much to Xavin’s shock.

2018: Bobby texts Miles excited to tell him about a new discovery he found, a burger that uses grilled cheese sandwiches as the bun.

2019:

2020: Operation: Crazy X-Girlfriend: Kevin leads Mary to the Sugar Man and she makes a deal with him before shooting Kevin in the heart.

2021: Laurie texts Darcy to plan a spa day. Jubilee asks why she always misses the shenanigans that people get up to.

2022:

2023: DX Fieldtrip: Arthur approaches Jessica for her New York City expertise. This leads to her being in a van with him, Liam, Match, Rictor, Sharon S., and Shatterstar to bring the young adults to District X. Having found an appropriately stocked bodega, Rictor comes across Sharon S. feeding her former colony. An attempt to seek out Snow Valley's office has Sharon S. facing Artie and she makes the choice to leave abruptly instead. Jessica decides to make a request of X-Factor Investigation's resources, which Quentin graciously allows. At a deli, Shatterstar assists Sharon S. in ordering a meal. Match and Sharon S. go dumpster diving much to Jessica's annoyance before she makes the younger mutants stop. Cleaned and at the Community Centre, Sharon S. regales Sooraya with her day. After Jessica gets clean, she chats with Sooraya, though they're interrupted by the appearance of Match and Sharon S. Match meets with Angelo to get information on credentials and informs the man of another Espinosa working with mutants in LA. Jessica tracks Sharon S. down and reveals they have some similarities in their pasts. Returning to the mansion, Jessica's state of dress is documented by Haller before Warren happens across the pair. Terry drops off a meal with Garrison and his wolf and asks some important questions. Bobbi meets with Hope A. and Sue to prepare her for the life that's to come for her when she marries Warren. A Haven to Call Home: A news update on the Seattle explosion reveals the cause, a mutant; Clint posts to the teams asking if anyone has anymore information than has been released.
