Like I’m watching the female skaters and I should be rooting for us but also the Belgian girl ‘s cute and she’s killing it like I’m really liking watching her skate
The person I root for in an Olympic game is based on who I think is the cutest/ good looking.
Except for women’s voley... then I’m rooting for my country
#I think her name was lore something#listen surnames are not my forte#edit: her name is lore bruggeman#she just appeared on the screen and the name showed up

OH-SO Magazine - A skate mag for empowering skater girls!
In March 2019, Transworld Skateboarding ceased its print publication. This was, understandably, a huge bummer -- especially as I was just getting back into skateboarding around that time and was looking to immerse myself in the culture through some mass media consumption.
As much as I live and breathe digital media, I’m old school, at heart. And since I grew up on Thrasher and Transworld, of course that’s the first thing I looked for at the bookstore. It’s that same desire that brought me to the magazine section today, to pick up a copy of Thrasher. But then, something else caught my eye:
The above photo is the cover of Issue 2 of a new skateboarding magazine aimed at the global community of female skaters. And that’s 10-year-old Sky Brown on the cover.
As I flipped through the latest issue of Thrasher, I scanned for content, hoping to find something more than just pretty pictures. Something with heart, and character. Something more about skating and the culture surrounding it than just stills of skaters doing tricks, hovering in mid-air with a board locked in space beneath them.
Of course, I’m not knocking skate mags that simply post pictures of pros and feature the odd interview and catalog of merch, but my tastes have changed with maturity. I want more.
I want something that speaks to me: the non-pro who lives and breathes skateboarding but isn’t trying to conquer flights of stairs, land impossible tricks, or risk my skin on a downhill slide. I just want to ride my board and connect with others who do the same, and especially if we can do it from the female perspective. And wouldn’t ya know it... That’s just what OH-SO seems to be all about.
Above is a screen-grab of OH-SO’s origins on their “Our Story” page. It’s brief, but get’s to the point, and illustrates something that’s been missing from skateboarding for a long time -- despite the fact that girls and young women have been skateboarding forever.
As I flipped through the pages, one article that stood out to me in particular was an essay by Sam Haddad, “What Is Good For Your Head.” This was the clincher, the “something more” I was looking for. This, and another essay on what it is about skateboarding that makes us smile, and why it’s ok to express the joy you get from skating, sold me on this magazine.
I was amazed to be reading an essay from a total stranger that almost perfectly nails the exact same way I feel about skating. In the “What Is Good For Your Head” essay, author Sam Haddad writes about “getting out of your own head.” These words were eerily similar to what I wrote, almost exactly, in my last blog post. The same sensation of freedom, of achieving “flow,” of forgetting about life’s problems for a little while... These are extremely familiar concepts to me. This is why I skate.
Aside from these essays are various interviews. The interview with Sky Brown, the 10-year-old skater on the cover, is a fantastic look at the next generation of skaters. Lore Bruggeman, a 16-year-old skater from Belgium, sounds equally like the kind of person I’d love to meet. And that’s just a fraction of the awesome, empowering girls and young women in this issue who hail from all over the world. (And that’s important, too; these pages aren’t stuffed with just white kids from New York, L.A., or Santa Cruz. These are interviews with girls of all races, from everywhere.)
Cover to cover, the whole issue is a great read with very little filler. Plus, it just looks great! I love the graphics and the layout.
I sincerely hope that OH-SO has many more issues on the way. I look forward to reading all of them!
