For: Aragorn & Anborn :: @lordsxfgondor Specified Muse: Hal Verse: Lighting up a Darkened World
FEAR An unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain, or harm.
The one emotion that everyone could feel, be they Mortal or non-Mortal. Some fears didn't always make sense. Like having a fear of books or a fear of the outside. Other fears were far more tangible and race orientated; The Hobbits had a fear of water, so swimming was usually only left for the more adventurous ones.
Yet for the Free People, no matter what Race they were, the one fear that they all shared was of the Darkness caused by Sauron. Elves, Men and Dwarves had all seen the destruction that the former Maia of Aulë could cause when he wanted to. With both Eregion and Numenor being two prime examples.
Many had lost their lives to bringing down the reigning Dark Lord during the Last Alliance of Men and Elves. But their sacrifices, along with those of Elendil the Tall and Erenion Gil-galad, had brought a long but temporary peace to Middle Earth.
A peace that was gradually breaking up after Rangers from both Gondor and former Anor began to seemingly vanish into thin air. A cause for alarm? For the Dunedain, yes it was. But for others outside of the Men, it didn't seem to be a major issue. At first.
Given the darkening times, a hidden meeting had been set up to try and figure out what was happening. Faramir and Anborn for the Rangers of Ithilien; Aragorn and Hal for those of the North.
Dark grey eyes flickered around the room, remaining in the corner with part of her attention on the doorway. Despite the knowledge that she could apparently trust all those in the room, it hadn't settled her instincts at all. In fact, Hal had refused to go any closer to Faramir. Something that had gotten her a raised eyebrow from the other two Rangers present.
Not being much of a speaker, the lone gender-fluid Commander just listened for a few minutes. Talking was more her leader's area anyway, not hers in the slightest. Something didn't feel right though and it caused Hal to speak up.
"Exactly, how safe is this place?"

@lordsxfgondor ::
Hal's arrival within Minas Tirith had been kept a secret from all but a select few guards and the children. With many, including the King himself, thinking that she was dead, her movements went unnoticed in the shadows. Yet it was to Faramir's second that the slow to heal former Esteldin Commander went first. Dark grey eyes scanned the office automatically, before her attention shifted to the Ithilien Ranger.
"Unless his office has migrated to the Third Tier, Aragorn isn't there." There was quiet amusement in the usually blank voice, since her friend and Chieftain wasn't a fan of paperwork. She leaned carefully against the doorframe, a hand over the healing wound. Her lips quirking into the ghost of a half smile at the words.
  "Anborn."
For @rangers-are-cool
Anborn slouched over the papers scattered on the table. He was supposed to be reviewing them and making suggestions on which Rangers would benefit from a trip up to the Northern Kingdom but honestly he would much rather be elsewhere. With Damrod and Laeglaw for instance, as the two of them fussed over their Captain as he worked to regain his strength to use a bow. Hearing footsteps he straightened and turned to see who it was, suspecting it was someone making extra noise as a courtesy as he was otherwise preoccupied.
"If you are looking for the Steward he is down at the range and the King is supposed to be locked up in his office right now." Anborn said, not looking up. He reached out and shuffled the papers that had not been gone through and set aside in their proper piles back into one stack... and noted that Faramir might kill him for undoing hours of work when he got back.

Damrod groaned and looked upwards in mild dismay. Somehow he felt he should have expected that, his own Captain was of a similar type. Attempting to look somewhat pathetic he slouched a bit and gave Hal a pleading look, sure it should probably be Anborn trying to gather more information but he was busy.
“Please tell me you’re joking? There cannot be two of them. Captain never wanted to rule or really to fight either.” A well suited pair overall, but still that there were such similarities was… kind of hilarious actually and when Damrod told the others they would get a good laugh before teasing their Captain.
A rarely heard huff of laughter escaped when they saw the pleading look, amusement visible in their gaze. Despite the amusement though, there was a lingering unreadable emotion in the dark depths. “I’m not. I’ve known Aragorn since I was 15 and he was just a child, Damrod. He prefers the outdoors, likes knowing that he’s helping even if the trust isn’t there and he loves the freedom that comes with being a Ranger.”
Hal looked up at the sky for a few minutes, frowning at the creeping darkness. “You can take the man out of the wilderness but never the wilderness out of the man. Everyone thinks he should be more King like, proper. But...” The older Dúnedan glanced back at him with a small smile. “In the end, he’s still Strider. Don’t put him on a pedestal because that’s a sure fire way to make things start going wrong.”
"I thought he was supposed to... be more proper?" The younger Ranger gave Hal a bewildered look. Perhaps it was just his own view colored by their different Captains but he'd expected the King to be a bit different from how he was.
Dark grey eyes blinked, darting between Aragorn and the younger Ranger. "Everyone thinks that but in all honesty, he doesn't like it. Given the choice between becoming King and remaining one of us, Aragorn would have stayed a Ranger." Hal admitted quietly, having had this particular conversation with the very man himself.

Hal and questions weren't necessarily a bad thing. However. 9 times out of 10, her questions meant that danger was imminent. For her situational awareness was one of the strongest within the Northern Rangers, mainly due to the time spent on the Barrow-downs as a child. Being around spirits and grouchy old trees quickly made it second nature to her.
She tilted her head slightly, partly listening to Faramir and partly seeming to listen to something outside of the room. "Normally it might be. But until we know what's happening to our people, nowhere is truly safe."
Aragorn glanced her way at that, not needing long to realise what his second had already heard. Blue eyes shifted back to Faramir and Anborn, catching the gestures. He shifted slightly and looked over the map, before tapping a location that seemed a little bit odd. A refuge not far from where one of the Southern Rangers had vanished. "Splitting up into pairs would be safer than staying together. In case we are being followed."
