@lordofcalamity found an unused line in Wingul's last scene from the game script data... and it's absolutely breaking my heart 😭

This is gonna be a bit hard to explain because we're dealing with three versions of the lines here: Long Dau (and its literal English rendering), the Japanese translation of the Long Dau line (more literary + sometimes adds/alters meaning a bit since Long Dau is simple English/omits stuff by design), and the English localization (translation and adaptation of the Japanese line).

For context, after the party's last fight against Wingul, he reactivates his booster in a last-ditch attempt to stop them. However, the booster backfires and as it's going out of control, we have the following exchange :

Rowen: Could this be a reaction to the booster? Wingul:

(LD) Mi! Tiaus us miti… bāeti us kūlulūmug tun’! [No! This is not... what is killing me!]

(JP) 違う、俺はこんなものに…… 殺されるんじゃ……ない ["No, I am not... being killed by something like... this."]

(EN) No! I could never fall prey to a mere tool!

On its own like that, it sounds like Wingul is lamenting the fact that his booster is going to be the thing that kills him, when he was probably hoping to die in battle. So, the English localization works well in this context.

However... it turns out that this line wasn't meant to stand on its own, but had a following one (in bold below), that alters the meaning of the exchange a little bit:

Rowen: Could this be a reaction to the booster? Wingul:

(LD) Mi! Tiaus us miti… bāeti us kūlulūmug tun’! Gaius... emud aus udun'el... edin bāeti... potis tun tī n'mud... [No! This is not... what is killing me! Gaius... and his ideal... are what... puts me to end...]

(JP) 違う、俺はこんなものに…… 殺されるんじゃ……ない。 俺を殺すのは……そう……ガイアスの理想……ガイアスだ…… ["No, I am not... being killed by something like... this. The one that kills me is... yes... Gaius' ideal... It's Gaius..."]

He's basically reframing his death as not due to the booster, but to (his own dedication to) Gaius and his ideal.

If we'd gotten the full line, maybe the localization would have been a little different to make it fit better with the second part, though I guess it could still work if we translate the second one this way: "No! I could never fall prey to a mere tool! My cause of death will be... Gaius and his ideal..." or something like that?

(Note, there isn’t an official localization of that line because the English script removed the unused lines; an audio file does exist for the English version, but since he’s speaking Long Dau here we don’t know what he would have said in English...)

Anyway Wingul is very tragic yes ;A;

Incidentally, there was another unused line in this scene, this time from Elize. After the fight but before he reactivates the booster, Wingul shows his determination to not back down: "But I'm not finished with you! I must help His Highness achieve his vision!"

Which, in the game, is followed by Leia asking "Why push yourself to the limit?" (To which Wingul replies "Silence!")

In the raw script and voice files (including the English localized ones), however, Elize speaks between those two lines, making the dialog like this:

Wingul: But I'm not finished with you! I must help His Highness achieve his vision! Elize: Stop it, Wingul! You'll kill yourself! Leia: Why push yourself to the limit? Wingul: Silence!

A sweet moment of Elize showing concern for her booster senpai. I'm a bit sad that's the one they decided to remove, because it's more meaningful than Leia's. But, well, now we know it exists :p

PLEASE talk to me about selectively mute ludger i'm literally ;-; i know all the jp canon has him talk a lot but i am still so fond for quiet ludger

(this is lordofcalamity's main btw)

Well all my knowledge about Ludger comes from the game Tales of Xillia 2 and the crossover games like Tales of Link, Tales of Asteria, Tales of the Rays and Tales of Crestoria (RIP).

Throughout the first run of Tales of Xillia 2 Ludger rarely talks, when you finish the game and unlock New Game+ and play the second run his character talks more than on the first one. I like to think the reason why is because he feels more comfortable on the second run because he subconsciously already knows what’s gonna happen and the reason for him being mute on the first run is all the uncertainties in his life, after all the game starts on him failing his exam to become an agent and instead getting a job as a chef on a train.

Imagine your plan in life not working out and having to start a whole new journey at such a young age with the lack of parents’ support. Yeah, I wouldn’t feel like talking either.

On the first run Ludger communicates vocally using grunts, hums and short sentences. While in a fight he says the name of the artes out loud meaning he is more confident on his fighting skills than his social ones. Partially the reason why he gets in debt is because he doesn’t speak up.

I love that nobody questions his selective mutism, neither people that know him like Julius nor people he just met like Jude, instead they immediately look at him and understand that’s just how he is. Also nobody makes fun of nor belittles the times when he does speak, they treat him as usual; they also include him in all the conversations, they don’t exclude him because of him being mute.

In all the crossover games i’ve experienced and all the info i know about the rest, Ludger tends to be a quiet character, he does speak more in those games tho, always gentle, respectful and with a sense of humour. Other characters tend to look up at him because of his personality and his fighting strenght. (And don’t make me talk about him and Elle together like father and daughter, the dynamic they have is immaculate)

Little off topic but looking back at all those games i played, and how their characters and story gave me hope about being true and accepting myself even before i realized i related so much to them, has given me a new perspective about it all. Specifically about Ludger, not only was he the protagonist of my first Tales of Series game but also one of my fav characters whom i kin so hard, i just cannot believe sometimes how much he means to me.

El primer encuentro que tuvo Mikleo con Rose no fue la mejor. Mikleo y Sorey estaban merodeando por las afueras de una ciudad blindada de Rolance intentando conseguir algo de información y provisiones para salir del país, algo bastante difícil ya que estaban siendo buscados por ser desertores "especiales" del Ejército. Estaba anocheciendo y necesitaban de un lugar para descansar. El sitio tenía varios edificios que alguna vez fueron bombardeados y solo quedaban sus ruinas. Entrando a unos de estos sitios que se toparon con Rose, no lograron escapar porque inmediatamente fueron rodeados por Felice y Talfryn. Rose los reconoció de inmediato, les contó sobre quién era (omitiendo bastante información) y les ofreció ayuda ya que un par de desertores le sería útil a su grupo de resistencia. Después de una acalorada discusión decidieron aceptar la oferta de Rose y unírsele ya que no tenían más opciones, aparte de seguir escondiéndose.

A partir de ese entonces la relación entre Mikleo y Rose fue bastante tensa en un inicio, Sorey creyó en lo que les dijo, pero Mikleo, consciente de su situación, era bastante desconfiado de Rose, sabía que no estaba siendo del todo sincera y tenía bastante miedo de que los fuera a traicionar, siempre le tenía un ojo encima, incluso dormía mal por estar en un estado de alerta. Cuando llegaron a la base supo que Rose jamás mintió y ella les pudo contar más sobre la resistencia y otros secretos que se había guardado. Pasado los días y luego de algunas misiones empezaron a formar una amistad (también era bastante cercana a Sorey pero aquí hablamos de la relación de Mikleo y Rose). En una ocasión Rose llegó con un regalo para Mikleo, era un tinte para el cabello. Ella consideraba que Mikleo tenía un pelo muy bonito pero demasiado llamativo y único, lo cual no era bueno para pasar desapercibido. Él no quería, pero tenía un punto muy válido y finalmente cedió (además en la situación actual de ese mundo, era un producto caro). Rose gastó dinero, bastante, realmente si que lo estimaba mucho. Mikleo and Sorey were hang around the outskirts of a armored city of Rolance, intending to obtain information and provisions to leave the country, which was hard since they were wanted for being "special" deserters from the Army.

It was nightfall and they needed somewhere to rest. The area had various buildings that were onced bombed and were now just ruins. They entered one and ran into Rose, but they couldn't escape before they were cornered by Felice and Talfryn. Rose recognised them instantly, told them who she was (though she left out a lot of information) and offered them help since a pair of deserters would be useful for her resistance group. After a hearted discussion, they decided to accept Rose's offer and join her, since they didn't have many options besides continuing to hide.

Since then the dynamic between Mikleo and Rose was rather tense from the start, Sorey believed what she said, but Mikleo, aware of their situation, was rather suspicious of Rose, knowing that she wasn't being completely honest and he was scared that the others would betray them, and always kept an eye on them, even losing sleep so he could remain alert. When they arrived to the base, he knew that Rose wasn't lying and she could tell them a lot about the resistance and other secrets that were kept secret. The days passed and after some missions they started to form a friendship (she was also quite close to Sorey, but right now we're talking about Mikleo and Rose).

On one occasion, Rose gave Mikleo a gift, which was hair dye. She considered that Mikleo had nice hair but it was too flashy and unique, which wouldn't be good for going unnoticed. He didn't want it, but she had a good point and he finally gave in (plus, in their world, hair dye was an expensive product). Rose spent the money, a lot of it, and Mikleo appreciated it a lot.
