so im getting to the end of my finally watching exu calamity

for the most part i haven't really made posts on my reactions here bc most of what i'd have to say has already been said, i've been seeing those meta posts around since calamity came out

but god the one unexpected thing about loquatius and laerryn i can't get over is just all of aabria's little reactions to quay's choices here

like. i know laerryn loves him as much as he loves her, but she's not good at showing it. she's deeply pragmatic, which means while loquatius is having huge moment after huge moment illustrating just how much he's willing to sacrifice for her, she's making sure she can do her job. because she has to. even if that means leaving him to die in the calix chamber, because she couldn't have saved him, and if she died trying then the whole world would be lost

but at the same time, she did all of this for him. it was so important to her to finish the leywright that solstice, because she has a longer lifespan than quay, and he wouldn't be with her to see the next one. she was distraught when she felt him slip away from her over the telepathic bond, even though she'd chosen to let it happen

part of the reason their marriage failed the first time is they just don't talk. there's so little communication between the two, not just on laerryn's side. quay has the big moments, yes, but how many of those does laerryn even know happened? she doesn't know that he fired elena to protect her from being blamed for evandrin. she doesn't know he prerecorded a broadcast to be played in the event of his death, that would tell the city not about laerryn's mistakes, but that it was loquatius himself who failed them, and laerryn tried everything she could to save the city. she doesn't know that he turned down a call from his queen and his family to come home and be protected from the apocalypse, bc he'd rather die trying to save laerryn, avalir, and his new family, than live without them

but aabria does.

and that gives way to the tiniest most hard hitting fourth wall breaks

like when quay turns his back on the seelie queen's offer - aabria immediately gives a small "no, no, you have to go"

laerryn needs him here. the story needs him here. there is no benefit to quay leaving, except that quay would be alive, and that's what laerryn desparantly wants, so it comes out in aabria

when we get to the climax, too, the big fight where all they're trying to do is keep laerryn alive long enough to activate the leywright, and it gets to quay's last turn? the first thing aabria says is "run. run."

laerryn is pragmatic. aabria knows this is a tragedy, and has been so far the most gung ho about playing into the tragedy. from a pragmatic perspective, loquatius should stay with laerryn, it gives the world a better chance of survival. narratively, loquatius should stay with laerryn bc that's how this story is supposed to go. and personally, loquatius should stay with laerryn because he can't bear to do anything else

but twice, she tells him to leave. because in this story where every single character is forced to reckon with which they love more, their city or their family - laerryn chose the city once. more than once. here at the end of all things, she won't do it again

shut up im thinking abt loquatious' final speech again. such a small detail is that he mispronounces zerxus' name. which is fine, hell he did it with his own name in the first episode's broadcast. but theres something about this one.

zerxus has made a Deal, and if anyone in the ring of brass knows something about deals itd be our faerie warlock. and i think about vespin chloras, whos wish to not be forgotten was granted by being remembered as the worst villain in history. and i think about how loquatious tells laerryn "history is not true". and how faerie and devilish lore both share a belief in the importance of names.

and yeah, its probably not that deep. but maybe, just maybe, it was loquatious' way of protecting his friend from the march of history flattening a person's identity into a word on a sheet of paper.

finding your stories and reading them are such a privilege, because you definitly have the skills to be a writer. I was kind of befuddled at first, because the attention you display you have for details in your story is rare in fanfics. But as a reader, you really get the impression you have a story here you're very passionate about, and cares a lot about the narrative; and then you're obviously very good at writing too! Good job :))

That is so great, honestly. And a good way to tie-in Minerva's long name to the AU outside of a well-done joke. Off that topic, I asked about archfeys and other planes with daemons, so would characters like Loquatious and Yu have them, or would they fall under the same rules as the Traveller? Could they have constant shifting daemons because 'dust' doesn't settle on them like it does material plane beings? Or were you thinking something else?

The way I see it, Changeling daemons are somewhere in between those of Archfey and mortals. Fey daemons in general tend to be a little odd but Changeling ones present their own kind of weird.

Though they themselves have a set daemon the same way people on the mortal plane do, they can also change their daemon to suit each mask they make for themselves, whether that's copying someone else's, if they're trying to mimic another person or creating an entirely different one for themselves. So Dusk would have an entirely different daemon from Yu even though they're the same person with the same soul.

However most daemons will have some sort of tell that varies from person to person; like no matter what form they take this daemon will always have a blue left eye or the tip of their tail will always be white. Also a fun fact about Changeling daemons is that their normal unchanged form is pure white, just like Changelings themselves.

Follow up question about Downfall piece-

Can you take us through how you developed the composition? This question extends a bit to the Calamity piece (and other non-CR pieces).

How do you approach a very structured composition while maintaining the organic shapes that make up the forms?

How do you balance and maintain character personalities when (theoretically) you have so many choices dictated by composition?

For both the Calamity and Downfall pieces the key to the composition was firstly character relationship, and then character personality afterwards. Knowing the way the characters interact informs the placement of them in a multi person composition like this.

In the Calamity piece, it’s littered with all kinds of parallel and perpendicular lines in the composition to show both the unification of the Ring of Brass, and then the internal conflicts that arise. Laerryn and Loquatious’ relationship is one of my fav part of this one, with Loquatious emulating a fallen angel, a Fey in love with a mortal, and Laerryn looking forward with ambition while still reaching back to his heart.

In the Downfall piece there’s less obvious alignment since their relationships were much more tumultuous, but with a lot more interaction between them, the Arch Heart is the most detached as I felt his perceptions were the most isolated among the family. Trist holding both Ayden and the Emissary in a motherly way is one of my favourite parts. In this one I tried to make them more merged together, the Calamity piece has the characters more separate and realised, where the Downfall piece has them more fused together with less obvious edges.

In terms of this type of character and composition study, it really speaks to my natural inclination of art, I’ve been told before my subjects are static and frozen but my shadows are alive, and I’ve pretty much leaned into it, freezing the interactions into a single image to observe while have subtle nods to personalities of character. When doing a big piece with the characters frozen and representing themselves to the fullest degree, even the slightest change like a hand on a shoulder or the tilt of the head can inform a lot about the character while also strengthening the composition.

In bare bones composition terms I do love the triangle, especially for these big group shots, I also try to not have any characters head be exactly at the same height as another’s, unless they’re completely aligned in thoughts, which is why Trist and Ayden are so close. I also do a lot of eye tracking checks, like taking special care to notice what path my eyes take and if it remains consistent upon every viewing, zooming out is very good for this. I control the eye tracking in a fairly apparent way, face to arm to hand/object is usually the path, notably Nydas’ sword in the Calamity picture leads directly from his conflict with Zerxus to Laerryn, and her hand leads to Loquatious.
