Horrible Influence
Shinsou x Princess!Reader
Shinsou realizes his feelings for his charge a little too late.
Warnings: slight angst
A/N: just a short little early birthday present for @kattariapenn ! I was gonna post this on Saturday but I might be too busy to get to posting it and honestly I hate waiting lolol. I was gonna make this just straight up ANGST but why would I wanna make you sad in your birthday. So, y’know... I fixed it.
The two of you were just friends.
At least that was what Shinsou had to tell himself when it was announced that you were to wed the second Prince of the Iida Palace. Though there was something dreadful growing in the pit of his stomach, more so, when you so shamelessly gushed about the gown you’d wear and what your first few children would be named, Shinsou had to remain calm, cool, and collected, even if his heart may have been breaking.
“Just friends,” if even that. Shinsou was a horrible influence on you. As your royal aide, appointed to you by the king himself, he had the nasty duty of following you around to make sure you never got up into any mischievous activities; a droning job if it weren’t for your wicked spirit and tight lips. You weren’t an ordinary princess— you didn’t hold your high up and mock people below you and sure as hell didn’t care for the standard code of conduct enforced on you when there were eyes on you. Sure, you knew how to ride a horse the way a noble woman was taught but when you were out in the wild, you kicked out your graceful facade and rode full speed ahead in search of something, anything, more thrilling.
You had taken Shinsou on plenty of misadventures, which often ended in you getting covered in grime or dirt, maybe even blood, depending on where the two of you ended up, and though Shinsou loved every second he spent with you slaying orcs, solving labyrinths, and even the small things like sneaking apples from the orchards of another kingdom, he was still very protective of you and cared about his status as your aide. When things got out of hand, Shinsou found himself bickering with you quite often, even going so far as dragging you back to the castle when he thought things were getting out of hand. If you wouldn’t listen to him, he’d let you deal with the wrath of your father.
You didn’t get into trouble too often since Shinsou usually had a good handle on you or the situations you got yourself in, but when you did, Shinsou had to deal with you and your morose attitude, acting as the diligent and perfect little princess in the eyes of others while cursing the ‘indigo bastard’s’ name behind closed doors. After Shinsou would have enough of your bitter attitude, he would sneak into your room and propose the two of you do something fun, which you always responded sarcastic comment about how it wasn’t your place to go gallivanting about with some commoner, and Shinsou would always reply with, “you’re a princess. You can do whatever you want.”
Needless to say, although you were such an ill-behaved terror in your own rite, the fact that Shinsou catered to your rambunctious needs, made him that horrible influence in your life. He couldn’t help himself. He had such a weak spot for you.
Shinsou lived for seeing the light return to your eyes as the spirit of adventure would once again flood your heart. He loved how wild you were, even for a spoiled, pain-in-the-ass princess and knowing that his days with you were numbered was tearing him up inside.
It was only a kiss.
At least that was what you might have wanted him to think. It was one kiss and though it had caught Shinsou off guard, it was everything to him. The way your delicate lips parted for him while intoxicating warmth radiated off of your body, how your gentle fingers tugged on his coat pockets, coaxing him closer to you, and the splendidly sweet taste of your painted lips danced across his tongue… Shinsou never wanted it to end. The moment seemed to last forever; the castle halls were as quiet as a mouse even though they were filled with nobles who had gathered to see you married off to Prince Tenya Iida, but in the dark little corner, there was only you, and there was only Shinsou.
You pulled away far too soon and Shinsou was left to dive down deep into your eyes to figure out what was going on in your mind. The only thing he found were tears.
“I’m sorry,” you said, barely above a whisper. Your own gloved hands dot at your eyes, careful not to smudge the facade covering your face. Shinsou knew the true you would only ever want her face to be covered in dirt. “I had to… just once…”
“Y/N,” Shinsou lifted his hand to your cheek but you stop him before he can touch you. Still, Shinsou wove his fingers in with yours, afraid that if he would let go, he’d never get to hold you again. Thousands of words were swimming through Shinsou’s brain but the only thing he could manage out was a, “why would you do that?”
You were quick to reply, “just forget about it.” You swatted his hands away from you and gathered a bunch of your gown in your hands. Shinsou closed his eyes. Even on a day that was supposed to be a happy one, you still managed to do something infuriating.
“I won’t be able to…”
It was cruel! If Shinsou had known that you reciprocated his feelings even slightly before today, he would have stopped at nothing to make sure this wedding wouldn’t be happening. He thought this was what you wanted, but perhaps you talking so much about this dismal wedding was just a means to get Shinsou riled up, though it had, it was beyond his duty, but not his power, to do something about it.
You began rounding the corner. In a moment of sheer panic, Shinsou grabbed your arm. It wasn’t enough to hurt you but it was enough to surprise you, demonstrated to him by the furious look in your eyes when he had your whirled around. That was the Y/N he knew.
“What are you doing?” You hissed at him, narrowing your eyes, though, this time you didn’t wriggle away from him.
“You can’t…” Shinsou felt a knot forming at the back of his throat. He was planning on avoiding you the entire day for this very reason. He wasn’t going to cry over the loss of a love that was never his but you had insisted on seeing him, like the spoiled little girl that you were! “You can’t do that to me! Have you no conscious! No clear grasp on human decency?!”
Shinsou’s outburst attracted the attention of two Iida palace guards that had been standing nearby the main hall. They called out to the princess who had her eyes fixated on Shinsou’s coat, trying very steadily not to cry.
“I’m a princess,” you let out a shaky breath while staying as composed as you could, “I can do whatever I want.”
“Y/N,” Shinsou growled and the guards made their way to your sides, glaring at the emotional castle aide. They asked if you were doing well and you turned away from Shinsou, away from another route. The tears in Shinsou’s eyes make it nearly impossible for him to watch you walking away from him.
But he was glad that he watched you because in one small moment, you turned your head and mouthed the words, “coat pocket,” at him.
Once Shinsou found himself a clearing, making sure nobody was around to watch him, he pulled a folded paper note out from the front pocket of his coat. You were such a tricky wench, pulling a stunt like that.
Shinsou unfolded the paper and read in your gorgeous handwriting, ‘When the time is right, meet me out by the stables. Nobody will be there. There are two horses waiting there. I assume you know what to do. I’m taking the white one.’
Shinsou scoffed although excited relief came rushing through his veins. You were such a nuisance- a reckless child with no sense of self-preservation. You were going to run away from your wedding? Well, Shinsou couldn’t allow that, not without making sure you didn’t get yourself killed off by Tenya Iida’s command. As mighty as you thought you were, you were nothing without Shinsou as your side.
As Shinsou exited the palace and made his way towards the stables, he thought to himself that maybe, you were more of a horrible influence on him.
