Online Secondhand Stores are the New Trend - Kristen S.
In the world where shopping is evolving to be more digitalized and the desire to live a more sustainable life is expanding, the online shopping experience is now, more than ever, growing to include the second hand clothing consignment market. There are multiple sites that now focus selling clothes that have been previously owned at much lower prices than they would be if purchased in the retail store. It gives the previous owner the ability to purge things they no longer want and it gives the buyer a way to keep their shopping habits ecofriendly. More people are beginning to catch on to this notion of resale, a trend that has multilevel benefits.
Some of these digital businesses include Poshmark and ThredUp. These sites make selling clothes that you no longer want, like, fit into, or need easier than it would be to sell them at an in person consignment shop. From the comfort of your home, you have the ability to clean out and make money on things you have lying around that someone else is looking for. I have found that it is incredibly easy to use these websites and since they are growing digital platforms, there are more tools and users also wanting to partake in this growing industry. With Poshmark, for example, the seller can sell an item to someone across the country that they never would have had the opportunity to without this platform that makes it possible. ThredUp works a little differently that they are the ones who give the sellers a set price that they pay them upfront and then they do the work of the selling at discounted prices to buyers across the US. Both sites are bringing people together at an online, clothing market that not only benefits each user, but is also having a lasting impact on the global climate by sharing what is already out there.
The sustainable clothing industry is taking off, thanks to the ability to do this online. I would say that this is a market that is one to look out for in terms of their rapid growth in business and for personal use, too. Currently, this industry is valued at $28 billion, which is huge in comparison to thinking about local consignment shops that were being used before the ability to digitalize this. The breadth of this industry is truly enormous. In the nine years since its founding, Poshmark alone has over 60 million users, so just thinking about that alone begins to explain how this industry is growing so fat. Retail stores, especially department stores, are now having to compete with this market share, which could explain part of the reason that many of them have been closing in recent months. More people are developing the mentality that if there is the option to buy something that they know no one else will be wearing at a lower price than typical, since it’s out of season, and knowing that they are going to reduce waste, then that is the method they are planning to shop with- something that fast fashion retailers cannot keep up with. ThredUp alone has kept 5.5 million pounds of old clothes from ending up in landfills clogging the earth. Projected through 2024 retail is tracked to decrease while resale is mapping out to completely take off.
With everything going on over the past year the online resale has still continued to rise and flourish, even while others in the fashion industry have flopped. Since people could no longer go to stores and shop around, this became an outlet for them to get their retail therapy in. At such lower prices and a wider variety of styles, shopping at places like these are highlights for people in a pandemic. I think that with the way the economy was going shoppers saw that they could get the quality they wanted at prices more in line with the current times. In addition, people has more time on their hands to think about what they wanted and thus it led to this increase. Looking at the graph below, the climb in online was largely in part to COVID as people just were not able to go to stores, retail or thrift, which forced this change.
I am not someone who thought much of this industry before I started looking further into what the implications and benefits were for joining in. I now don’t go a day without browsing on sites like Poshmark and ThredUp since it is secondhand goods which means the quantity of like products is typically low- and also because it’s a good way to have a little pocket change from cleaning out what I no longer need! I think that from these online companies becoming more prominent, it is causing a lot of people to reconsider how they shop, why they shop, and what they shop for. It is a change that is only going to help the trajectory of the climate moving forward.

Okay it's coming up on that time again
Mercury retrograde is happening again. This time Mercury will station (appear to stand still) on August 4th 2024 9:56 pm Pacific Time, but I'm going to advise that anything you are working on that can be characterized as "forward progress" be paused starting July 27th. The time to back up your computers is *now* and I suggest that anything you have that's important on cloud services? copy it to a portable hard drive. We've seen what Crowd Strike did to big businesses; don't let that be your portfolio, your manuscript, your archives, your photo album. Get it local. Cloud just means somebody else's computer.
DO NOT SIGN CONTRACTS DURING MERCURY RETROGRADE. Get them sewn up this week or wait until the end of August. PLAN FOR DELAYS DURING TRAVEL. Don't pack anything of particular value if you must travel.
August 4th is also a new moon in Leo and that's usually the time to start new projects. but take heart - there's a workaround. Mercury retrograde is a great time to do do-overs, reviews, repeats, and throwbacks.
So this is the secret to how you start things during a mercury retrograde and see success--do a re-start.
for activities to "return" to during mercury retrograde, you can look at your own natal chart and see what house mercury is in when it begins retrograde at 4 degrees virgo, then when it enters leo on August.
Since Mercury will be in virgo when it stations direct, this is a good time to review your work stuff. Look at your projects, evaluate them, look for missing details. Make records, and BACK STUFF UP. Tempers are going to flare in your everyday work--organize your stuff, gather your receipts, stay gracious. File your paper clutter. Update your spreadsheets. Look for subscriptions for stuff you don't need or want and cancel them.
Old health routines are a great re-start when mercury goes retrograde in Virgo. Go back to eating more plants, try that thyroid supporting eating style again. Get the yoga mat back out. Duswt off your kettlebells. Go on a dumb little walk for your stupid mental health - something that you were doing for your health in the past, but stopped doing.
Special highlight day! on the evening (USA) of Wednesday August 7th mercury and venus will be conjunct in virgo, and so on this day and thursday, it could be a good time to socialize, especially if you're catching up with someone you haven't seen in a long time.
On August 15, Mercury will go into Leo. This is when you go back to your hobbies, leisure, fun, creativity, romance, and children. If you took an old course about how to express yourself or for leadership, charisma, personal improvement, personal brand, etc. This is a great time to go back to those courses and review them with the experience you have now.
If you have old writing, this is a good time to go back and see if you need to revise or rewrite.
If you used to do a hobby or art but you haven't in a while, mercury retrograde is a good time to come back to it. If you were decluttering and then life happened, Mercury retrograde is a good time to declutter - and I'm going to suggest, since Mercury is going into Leo on August 15, that you mark that as the time to declutter your clothes and hobby supplies.
This is a shitty time to start a new investment! but it is a good time to analyse where your money is going (horrifying, I know) This is when you'll see that you're spending a lot of your money on candles, and be more able to see clearly that it's becoming a problem.
This is an awesome time to go on a "no buy" challenge around your hobbies. Fiber artist? work from stash, and make something you have made before that you really liked. Fashionista? No new clothes. (I said *new* clothes. Consignment, vintage, thrift, and swaps are technically not new clothes, but don't go wild.)
Mercury stations and turns direct on August 28, 2024, resuming forward motion again, and will have passsed completely out of the retrograde degrees on the evening (USA) of September 11, 2024.\
That's it babes, you've got this
Mercury Retrograde 2023 for Writers
Mercury is going retrograde late on Tuesday, Dec 12. Back up whatever you need to back up now.
But honestly mercury retrogrades arent total disaster, hide in your bed until it's over. I would wait to sign a contract or agreement until after mercury goes direct on January 1, but if you have anything that has to do with the suffix re, this is the time.
revise a story, or
rewrite one with a better vision.
re evaluate your project planning for the next quarter.
review your 2023 and compassionately evaluate it.
revisit old ideas that you set aside.
Mercury is going back. You should too. When mercury turns direct on January 1st, you'll be ready to look forward, refreshed with a better awareness of what you did before.
But don't feel like you are messing up if your plan isn't going smoothly right from the crack of January 1st! The morning of January 11 will be the new moon in Capricorn, and you will have seen some of the complications of your grand resolutions after the first week. Take time to adjust your plan to whatever gives you practical, sustainable results, and take advantage of the do-over first thing Thursday morning.
If you would like a talisman through mercury retrograde, choose yellow, purple, citrines, peppermint, or feathers.
