The funeral had been lovely. As lovely as a funeral could reasonably be.

People spoke, waxed poetic about what Dan had meant to them, talked for ages, threw in a few tears for some added flavor. It was exhausting, truthfully. And nothing at all like what Dan would have wanted. But it wasn’t for Dan, not really.

But it also wasn’t for Phil.

Phil, who’d known Dan more intimately than anyone ever had, who’d held the pieces of Dan's fractured psyche together through sheer force of will, found it all a bit much.

Dan would have laughed at him, would have taken Phil’s face in his hands and shook his head playfully, telling him in a soft voice, one that was only ever meant for Phil’s ears, to stop hiding behind the reflexive dissociation he so readily fell into. Dan would tell him to feel his emotions. To let them ride out the tidal wave of his ever-buzzing mind until they came to rest on the shore.

Fuck him. Phil thought. And then immediately felt bad for it.

The Dan in his head laughed, loud and unbridled and deafening.

Phil left him there. In the ground, in the dirt, laughing.
