Haha okay so some critiques on the jttw & associated media western fandom & fandom in general coming up, so please skip this upcoming text wall if you don't want to encounter my undoubtedly ~devastating~ words (i.e. don't like don't read as people love to say, & if I have to be inundated with images of my notp every time I go into the sun wukong tag then I imagine people can be chill with me expressing my opinions & giving people fair warning that I WILL be critiquing common fandom trends, but no need for you to see that if you don’t want to. Cool? Cool.)

PFFFFFTTT oh man there are many times when I feel like signing up for such a protection squad...when it comes to the current western jttw & Sun Wukong fandom I do feel like I'm often swinging at a rapid pace between "well it's fandom & people are allowed to make the stories they want" & "I am once again begging my fellow monkie kid enthusiasts (& sometimes creators) to do more research into the og classic/show it more respect so you can avoid any potentially offensive/off-the-mark misunderstandings of the status & cultural context of the characters in their country of origin (I promise it's super interesting & I can provide you with links to free pdf copies of the entire Yu translation, i.e. the best one ever created, so feel free to ask!) & maybe also stop constantly stripping away all the nuance of Sun Wukong's character for the sake of either making him an entire asshole so your little meow meow can look completely innocent in comparison and/or making the monkey king's entire life & character revolve around said meow meow."

Like I get that fandom's supposed to be a kind of anything-goes environment, but one thing that honestly seems to be true of a lot of fandoms--and the western one for Sun Wukong & co. is certainly not immune from this--is that there often seems to be a kind of monoculturalization at work in what stories are created & what character interpretations are made popular. Across a multitude of fandoms, you frequently see basically nothing but the exact same tropes being made popular & even being insisted on for the canonical work (especially hasty redemption arcs & enemies to lovers these days), the exact same one-dimensional character types that characters from an original work keep getting shoved into, the exact same story beats, etc. And I get it to an extent, as fandom is generally a space where people just make art and fic for fun & without thinking too hard about it & without any pressure. 

This seems to, however, often unfortunately lead to the mentality that it’s your god-given right to do literally whatever you want with literally any cultural figure without even the slightest bit of thought put into their cultural, historical, and even religious context, even (and sometimes especially) when it comes to figures that are really important in a culture outside your own. For such figures--even if you first encounter them in a children’s cartoon--you should be a little more careful with what you do with them than you would with your usual Saturday morning line-up. It of course has to be acknowledged that there exists a whole pile of absolutely ridiculous & cursed pieces of media that are based on Journey to the West & that were produced in mainland China, but for your own education if nothing else I consider it good practice for those of us (myself certainly included) who aren’t part of the culture that produced JTTW to put more thought into how we might want to portray these characters so that at the very least (to pull some things I’ve seen from the jttw western fandom) we’re not turning a goddess of mercy into an evil figure for the sake of Angst(TM), or relegating other important literary figures into the positions of offensive stereotypes, or making broad claims about the source text & original characterizations of various figures that are blatantly untrue, or mocking heavenly deities because of what’s actually your misunderstanding of how immortality works according to Daoist beliefs. Yet while a lot of this is often due to people not even trying to understand the context these figures are coming from, I do want to acknowledge that the journey (lol reference) to understand even a fraction of the original cultural context can be a daunting one, especially since, as I’ve mentioned before, it can be really hard & even next to impossible to find good, accessible, & legitimate explanations in English of how, for example, the relationship between Sun Wukong and the Six-Eared Macaque is commonly interpreted in China & according to the Buddhist beliefs that define the original work. 

That is to say, I do think it’s an unfortunate, if unavoidable, part of any introduction of an original text into a culture foreign to its own for there to be sometimes a significant amount of misinterpretation, mistranslations, and false assumptions. There is, however, a big difference between learning from your honest mistakes, & doubling down on them while dismissing all criticism of your misinterpretation into that abstract category of “fandom drama.” The latter attitude is kind of shitty at best and horrifically entitled at worst. 

Plus, as I’ve discovered, there is a great deal of interest and joy to be drawn from keeping yourself open to learning aspects of these texts & figures that you weren’t aware of! I can say from my own experience that I’ve always really enjoyed & appreciated it when individuals on this site who come from a Chinese background--and who know much more about the cultural context of JTTW than me--have taken the time to explain its various aspects. It often leaves me feeling like woooooaaaahhhhhHHH!!!! as to how amazingly full of nuanced meaning JTTW is like dang no wonder it’s one of China’s Four Great Classical Novels. 

And I guess that right there is the heart of a lot of my own personal frustration and disappointment with the ways that fandoms often approach a literary work or other piece of media...like don’t get me wrong, a lot of the original works a fandom may grow around are just straight-up goofy & everyone’s aware of it & has fun with it, yet the trend of approaching what are often nuanced and multi-layered works in terms of how well they fit and/or can be shoved into pretty cliche ideas of Redemption Arc or Enemies to Lovers or Hero Actually Bad, Villain Actually Good etc...well, it just seems to cheapen and even erase even the possibility of understanding the wonderful complexity or even endearing simplicity that made these works so beloved in the first place. Again, I feel like I need to make it clear that I’m not saying fandom should be a space where people are constantly trying to one-up each other with their hot takes in literary analysis, but it would be nice and even beneficial to allow room for commentary that strives to approach these works in a multi-faceted way, analysis & interpretations that go against the popular fandom beliefs, & criticism of the work or even of fandom trends (yes it is in fact possible to legitimately love something but still be critical of its aspects) instead of immediately attacking people who try to engage in such as just being haters who don’t want anyone to have fun ever (X_X).

Anyway, I know I didn’t cover even half of the stuff you brought up in the first place anon, but I don’t want any interested parties to this post to suffer too long through my text wall lol. I was asked to try my hand at illustrating Guanyin, but as with you I’m nowhere near as informed as I should be about her, so I want to do more research on her history and religious importance before I attempt a portrait. I’ll try my best, and do plan to pair that illustration with my own outsider’s attempt to summarize her character. From what little I do know I am in full agreement that her backstory is so incredibly amazing...just the fact that she literally eschewed the bliss of Nirvana to help all beings reach it, and even split herself into pieces in the attempt to do so (with Buddha granting her eleven heads and a thousand arms as a result)...man, I can see why she’s such a beloved & respected deity.

 As for what western fandom commonly does with everyone’s favorite god-fighting primate...I can talk about this at length if there’s interest, but for this post I’ll just say that I guess one lesson from all of this is that for all the centuries that have passed since Journey to the West was first completed, literally no one drawing inspiration from the original tale in the west (lol) has come even slightly close to being able to equal or even capture half the extent of the nuance, complexity, religious, historical, and cultural aspects, and humor that define Wu Cheng'en's story of an overpowered monkey who defied even Buddha.

So thank the heavens we'll always have the original.

Imagine Pacho Sends You as a Gift to (Spy on) Amado 3/3

More smut (but I’m really bad at writing it, :////). Plot twist guaranteed. And I can’t believe I wrote 6K for this, FML. What has Chema done to me? I also made a few changes in the first two parts, read the whole thing on AO3.

You are woken by a phone call in the middle of the night. But you neither move nor open your eyes. You hear some numbers, Amado sounds irritated. It could be something related to tonight's dinner?

Your patience is wore out minutes after minute and Amado still hasn't returned to bed. You make a bold decision to wake up, and the Mexican is smoking by the window. Something keeps him up at night? That doesn't sound like the Lord of the Skies, the man who has had the world at his feet.

"You wanna talk, more sex or a bath?" You carefully propose.

"I was expecting for late night snacks you pull with some Asian witch shit." Amado lets you sit on his lap. "Hang on, I've got some leftovers from the kitchen."

You two settle for sharing the jacarandas mochi from a small food container in the bathtub.

"You like it?" You don't really need validation from Amado. It's just you spent hours coming up with the idea of improvisation, trying to make a traditional Japanese dessert more appealing to the Mexican guests. "I made the bean paste from scratch, less sugar. I understand most Mexicans are not used to sweet bean paste..."

"They don't deserve it." Amado suddenly claims. You don't get it. Who are they? "They are just a bunch of pigs in expensive suits, corrupted, stinky pieces of shit." Then Amado tells you almost everything. He invited the tequila exporters with the hope that the cartel could use their affiliate companies in the States as front to launder more drug money since tequila is one of the largest yet least regulated businesses between the US and Mexico. And the politicians are officials from Mexican Customs Bureau and SHCP.

"Fucking idiots. They thought I was gonna ask them to smuggle coke under the tequila crates. With all the fucking Pier 1 sofa and Ford pasenger seat manufacturers in Juárez, I've had more than enough trucks to move products across the border." When Amado brought up money laundering, the tequila exporters expressed concern regarding possible investigation of tax evasion from ATF, putting more pressure on Amado to increase their cut.

They eventually made a deal less favorable to the cartel and that's why Amado's a bit pissed when he's on the phone.

"Why are you telling me this?" For the first time that night, you ask softly.

"Those cabrón. They don't deserve what you bring to the table. You pour your heart and soul, making the best feast I've ever had. You deserve to know what happened." 

You've never thought you'd hear that from Amado. He didn't have to tell you anything. It makes you lower your guard. You want to get closer to him, without any agenda.

"Does this mean my body won't be put in the trunk of one of your auto collections tomorrow?" You try to lighten it up.

Amado kisses you from behind. The position is awkward but neither of you care. 

Making out with Amado in the bathtub makes the night better than your wettest dream. 

The Mexican's gonna make you cum again with those magician hands of his.

"You...haven't told me if you like the jacarandas mochi." You're so screwed. Maybe you'll never get the answer because Amado's too busy sucking you tits.

Amado clears his schedule the next day. He brings you to the Asian boutique where he bought the Japanese painting.

"One of my guys found this place. I thought you might be interested..." That's cute from a drug lord. But you're not that kind of person.

"A) I don't need a Buddha artifact home to find my inner peace, and B) only Pacho wears shirts with Chinese characters taken from a poem back in the Tang Dynasty. Seriously, he's ridiculous. Come on, let's go."

Instead, you two spend the day trying different Asian food you can find in DF. From hotpot to Peking roasted duck, from pho to char kway teow. Amado seems to enjoy the Chinese food more than others.

"Most Asian restaurants in North America are run by the Chinese, from San Francisco to DF. Since you guys can't tell if an Asian cook is from China, Japan, Vietnam or Thailand, he or she would quickly learn dishes from other Asian countries. We are always the most hardworking people." You explain to him.

"Oh, I love hardworking people." He's so full of shit but you can't help smiling. 

Amado finds a fortune cookie note saying "Happy New Year of Monkey." Then you explain Monkey is one of the Chinese zodiac signs which repeat every 12 years. 

"So 1956...I am a monkey? Cool." He's surprisingly quick with math.

You write the Chinese character of monkey on a napkin and Amado seems fascinated by it. So you suggest that he could get the Chinese character tattooed, "Next time you can show that to Pacho. He probably would get one, too."

Holy shit, he's really doing it. 

The way the tattoo parole Amado brings you to is cleared makes you believe it's part of the cartel business, which makes perfect sense. 

"You don't have any tattoos? Not at all?" You're surprised when the tattoo artist prepares Amado's skin on his forearm, first cleaning then shaving.

"We've fucked three times, once in a bathtub," Amado grins, obviously in a good mood, "Don't you think it's a bit late to ask? Or I fucked you too hard you didn't notice?"

Thank God the tattoo artist doesn't even flinch.

OK, you have to get back at the fucker. So when the tattoo artist asks you for the character to make a design, you write pig in Chinese instead of monkey.

"Hold on, that doesn't look like what you wrote on the napkin. Let me see it." Right after the tattoo artist places an outline of the design on his skin, the Mexican stops him.

You're 100% sure Amado doesn't speak or write Chinese. How the fuck does he figure it out?

"What is it exactly? Tell me the truth or you will have an honest conversation with my brother." Amado makes the threat more scary by pointing at Vicente, who stands next to the door with two guns and a pink lollipop. 

"Wait. He doesn't know shit. It was me...I wrote a different character." Your confession is quick, you don't want to see anyone get hurt over this beef.

You thought it's just a silly prank. Now you realize you're dealing with the most notorious narcos of the country. Amado may look like a businessman, reasonable, even decent. He's still capable of getting violent whenever he thinks it is necessary, to an extent you really don't want to know.

You take a deep breath, then apologize to Amado. You are ready for the consequence. 

"Apology accepted. On one condition, you'll have the exact same tattoo as I do when the new design is done." Fair enough.

But you're a chef who often needs to cook right in front of customers. You can't let them see a tattoo on your forearm. 

"How about here?" The Mexican is touching your breast as if no one's around.

It's a small tattoo, just one character. But it's near your heart and you're sensitive as fuck.

You can't move but your nipples are hard almost through the entire process. Amado's right beside you and he sees everything. Someone please help you ease the pain FFS.

The fucker doesn't act on it until you get into the car. Amado shuts the soundproof panel between the front and rear seats and the next thing you know, you're riding the man who just makes you get a stupid matching tattoo. It fucking stings, and itchy. Yet the pleasure is undeniable when your tits being teased, bit, sucked. Amado carefully avoids the tattoo, which makes you want him to scratch the itch even more. You scream his name when you cum with both extreme pleasure and pain.

Amado puts an arm around you when it's over. Two matching tattoos are right next to one another. Your heart is still beating fast from the afterglow, echoing his pulse.

You feel the caress on your beast, it hurts a bit yet the body warmth is nice. Is it how it feels to be marked by someone else? Not many people will ever see it, plus it's not a specific name or symbol that would embarrass you later. It'd be a secret.

"You know what? You won't be able to find a dead body to stand in for you when you eventually betray me, sweetheart. No one else would get a tattoo like this." 

What Amado just says feels like a kick in the stomach. It's cold and absolutely right. Have you been sloppy? Has Amado figured out something already? "Why would I betray you?" You ask, but he doesn't give an answer.

It's the last day of your stay. You have a very special package delivered from Japan.

You gonna make blowfish sashimi tonight for Amado.

Everyone knows it's toxic so it has to be handled with meticulous care. You make Amado watch every step —  a set of fuguhiki, knives with thin blade is unwrapped, you pick them one by one to gut the fish, remove the deadly liver and ovaries, skin it and cut off its head. Then instead of cutting outward like most people do, you turn a knife to cut inward. 

"Careful! You shouldn't hold knife like that." Amado almost jumps in to help. But you assure him it's OK. Then you show off the technique to cut extremely thin and translucent slices of blowfish.

To make the white meat more attractive, you set the slices in a large plate with red poppy flower pattern. They are so thin, the poppy flower is still visible when all's done.

"An ancient Chinese writer used to say, 'The taste of blowfish is worthy of death.'" You joke when you mix the sauce. "Don't worry. I'm a licensed blowfish-preparation chef."

Amado squints, "So you're testing me."

You want to tell him to just trust you, but you don't know how.

"There's no antidote for the tetrodotoxin. But I'll eat it, too. If it's poisonous, our muscle will be paralyzed bit by bit when we're fully conscious, eventually we won't be able to breathe. We're going to die slowly, painfully and desperately."

You take the first bite, Amado follows.

"Why are you so loyal to him?" Amado breaks the silence, "For one, you don't sleep with him. You obviously are not related. And as far as I know, money can't buy loyalty."

"I'll answer it if you answer my question first." The Mexican agrees. "You didn't want me for me, you barely knew me. You made the decision when Pacho said I was the best, he wouldn't last a week without me. You want him, or something that makes you his equivalent. Except being gay, I don't know. You won't fuck his boys, so I'm the next proxy. Am I correct?"

After a pause, Amado nods. Then it's your turn.

"How many female chefs do you know?" Amado is confused for a few seconds, then he gets it.

"There was no place for you in your line of work, just like there was no place for him in this game controlled by men, men who have multiple wives and fuck whores. He sees himself in you. So he takes you under his wings."

"Yes. Pacho is the only one who's believed me. He's also the biggest shareholder of my first restaurant."

Amado then asks what you gonna tell Pacho when you return. "I'll tell him you give really good heads. Maybe he should try it himself." You wink, "No, I'll let him know you're not a cold-blooded bastard. Even though you sometimes make awful choice by dipping sashimi in guacamole, you're appreciative of other people's work." You really mean it, you like Amado. But you'll probably never know if he buys it or if it matters.

After a while, you finish the whole plate of blowfish sashimi. "Seems we're not dead." Amado's poking your cheek with chopsticks.

"No, we are not."

"Last question, why did Pacho send you?"

"Amado, you would've done the same. You know that."

Eluard wrote this poem in 1941, during WWII and the Occupation. Published and circulated clandestinely, it was Eluard’s contribution to the Résistance. Some say the poem was strongly influenced by his wife, Nusch. And that her name was the other name he would “write” on his schoolboy’s notebooks. Nusch Eluard died in 1946, just after the war. She was part of the most prominent group of artists and intellectuals of the “between two wars” Paris.

SPIRITUAL EMERGENCIES

Its been a hard nights day and I've been working like a God...Centring my chi by  (                      ) in conjunction with a little (                    ) on Sundays but don't try this at home unless you have some. Under the influence but not persuaded, with no choice other than to follow my free will. 350 songs recorded in Prague (about a third of them are good enough) over a very long weekend and now ready to go again...Last month I heard my own voice in a dream saying 'Death is my second home',  so perhaps another temporary close-down is coming. Hope that paragraph was pretentious enough. If not...meditating on 'The First law of thermodynamics...No energy in the universe is created and none is destroyed'. So all is well...

The recent magnificent Wargames with Russia and China...300 thousand men, (that's a lot) many fields of tanks and nautical miles filled with battleships, necessary because of (according to a joint statement from the protagonists) 'dangerous times' and 'unstable situations'. Reminds me of Bill Hicks quoting George Bush the older (the CIA president) saying 'The world is a dangerous place'...'yeah, thanks to YOU, quit arming the world!'. But this time around, these unstable situations are being more egged on and supported by Russia, gleefully supported as always by all those those make weapons. Trump is not the 'human' being to slow this down. Nature abhors a vacuum and she is rushing now to fill various empty heart/mind and soulless actions made by various leaders with processes of an irreversible...well... nature...Only '12 years' left now to avert climate change disaster...your newborns this year might very well inherit a desert. Well, if it was good enough for the Israelites...

Who matters

Let’s take a trip through history, and see if we can learn anything about the answers to those questions. I am hardly qualified to place a chronological order to the early writings, and their time of writing, so I will look at them in a more or less abstract order, and I will also endeavour to keep my personal religious beliefs from coming through too strongly. Let’s begin with the Egyptians, and their cuneiform and hieroglyphic writings/inscriptions. What is the common theme, or at least the most common theme? Is it not a depiction of the deities which the people believed in, and the necessary steps that humans must take to merit their favour? What is the base message, as it applies to the questions presented at the outset? Does not the message that human lives have value in the eyes of both deities, and other humans? Moving on to the writing widely known to the Western world as the “Holy Scriptures”. It is generally accepted that the book of Job was the first of this collection of writings to be penned. What is the message of this book? Is it anything other than “Do well, and God will bless you, do evil and you will be cursed? There are other themes interspersed as well, but that message comes through fairly clearly. And at the end of the book, the last six chapters, purport to record a lengthy conversation between the main character and the God that he believed in, which in my opinion once more sends the message that man, and his thoughts and habit matter to God. The next book to look at is the book of Genesis, in which an explanation of the origin of man is laid out. That sentence is incorrect. The care of God in creating a habitat for His treasured possession is explained. I have a friend, who has spent months endeavouring to set up a large (roughly 70 gallon) aquarium in his basement. It has been trouble pretty much from the start, what with leaks, messes, hard work, etc. As of the latest that I know, he has finally gotten it sealed, and has started adding fish and plants. Is this so different from the Genesis account of creation? God had something that He wonted, but first He had to make somewhere for it to live. So, with much work and carefully design, He created an entire habitat, perfectly suited, and then He placed His treasured creation into the carefully constructed habitat. There are obviously many more examples of this theme that I can pull from the Holy Scriptures, but I will call that sufficient for the purposes of this writing. What about the Greeks, with their vast number of deities, gods, goddesses, and demi-gods? A bit more of a darkly playful message, but the overarching theme is that humans are basically the playthings of the gods. I am not familiar enough to with any specific writings to bring out specific examples, but the accounts that I have read clearly bring out that message. (I have read both The Iliad, and The Odyssey, as well as early translations of Aesop’s Fables, and Grimm’s Fairy Tales) Humans are a bit more of a sideline interest in those accounts, but they still have an important role to play I am not very versed in Eastern writings, but the little exposure that I have had has given me similar impressions. The aspirations for “Nirvana”, that we are given by Buddha, the “true unity” presented by the Kama Sutra, etc, all point to a human value, due to a human role is the cosmos. Yin and Yang, the need to balance good and evil, and the responsibilities of humans in establishing and maintaining that balance. More recently, we have the American Constitution, which delineates certain rights as being “bestowed by the Creator”. It outlines things that should be done, and things that should not be done, and explains that these things should or should not be done, because of the value of human life, and the essential relationship of human freedom to human life. Once more the message that humans rights matter, because human lives matter, and that human lives matter, because human life was given by God, and that along with giving that life, He also gave certain rights. I don’t know of any other examples off the top of my head, though I am sure there are many. But now let’s see how writings, and teaching from the last 1.5 – 2 centuries compares. Charles Darwin, the first to formulate an origin theory that excludes any form of deity is from this time period. As his theory on the origin of the species has seen greater and greater mainstream acceptance, what message has it sent? You, as a human, came from a monkey. Now you are no more than an animal. We eat animals for food. That is the value of an animal’s life. The majority of animals find their greatest value to humans by dying. But the monkey came from some lesser creature…which came from primordial sludge. A major issue in Africa a few years ago, and even still today, is that of contracting Ebola from contaminated drinking water, from sludge. So now the life of a human is relegated to a virus that crawls in the mud, and kills humans. Stephen Hawking, with his “Theory of Everything” further reinforces this message. The schools in America are no longer allowed to teach any form of religion, or higher purpose to life. These teaching have been replaced by indoctrinating our children from ages 5 and even younger with the message that they are a happenstance, a freak phenomenon, with zero value in the grand scheme of the cosmos. We tell young mothers and fathers to be that the life within is not human, it’s just a parasite, they can “dispose” of it if they see fit. We never really say when it becomes more than a parasite. Our children hear this, and think “I’m glad Mommy and Daddy didn’t ‘dispose’ of me”. But they also hear “humans are disposable” We have our insurance companies offering life insurance with $50,000 payouts. (many other figures as well, but that is another subject) What message does that send? Life has a dollar value, not a life value. Our “justice” system says murder gets you a number of years in prison. What message does this send? Lives have an annual value, not a life value. When a person dies, the one at fault gets sued, and pays out several hudred thousand to several million dollars. What message is this? Human lives are only worth money. They can be bought, and sold. What more needs to be said? How can a social movement ever hope to undo decades of teaching, of indoctrination with the opposite message? Now, in closing, I will allow my personal beliefs to come through more directly. The Bible predicted this. Revelations talks about “dealing in the souls of men”. Is that not what we do with out “life” insurance, and our lawsuits? Is that not what we do when we say that taking a life is worth a certain number of years, and not worth the life of the taker? The message of the Holy Scriptures has been demonstrated to improve conditions in EVERY culture in which it is applied. Yes, it has been grossly abused on many occasions, to very great ill effect. But for every example of that, there are at least half a dozen examples of positive reformation, of establishment of order, of recognition of the sanctity of human life.

What Makes Buddha So Cool?

You may have a couple friends leading an exemplary life that feel no need for God. They are highly educated, scientific and technically savvy. They even have philosophic depth, and delight in Sci-Fi blockbusters.

You may have gone into deep conversation in matters of ultimate concern, finding them very uncomfortable with conventional, organized religion, but with a soft spot for Buddha. “You know, if I had to pick any religion, it would definitely be Buddhism.”

How could Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, 2,500 years ago, be so adept at addressing the sensibilities of contemporary people, such as the brilliant American philosopher, Ken Wilbur?​

NONE: America’s Fastest Growing Religion

In recent decades, no one denomination can claim to be the fastest growing, whether Christian, Jewish or Muslim. You can be Orthodox, Conservative or Reformed. You can be ultra-liberal, such as the Universalist-Unitarians, patron of many of our best authors. It doesn’t matter.

A new generation is emerging with Millennials increasingly dropping out from church, mosque or synagogue. They do this, not out of any kind of spite, but simply because they don’t find this form of religion very relevant to being spiritual or attaining ultimate realization. They would more readily look to psychoactive drugs and meditation.

The numbers suggest that 20% of our youth don’t go to any kind of religious institution on a regular basis. Yet only one-third are atheists. What about the rest? They are “spiritual, but not religious.” They put a higher value on spirituality than most people in pews. They can now go to Google, iTunes or YouTube to seek enlightenment. Here they have instant access to Eastern Philosophy and Religion.​

Religion of No Religion

Five hundred years before Christ, Buddha actually beat Socrates in placing supreme value on knowing yourself. It didn’t matter what your caste was in India, whether you were male or female, you had a right to know the truth. Let the gods be the gods, but WHO AM I?

It is said that Buddha instantly saw the highest potential in this incarnation of everyone he met. Having awoken to who he truly was, he devoted his entire life to making that experientially accessible to whomever he met. He started a global movement that has yet to see its limit.

Think of the Dalai Lama. Buddhism is a way of being.​

You didn’t need to learn rituals, recite authoritative scriptures or master the intricacies of theology. You just needed to tune into your experience, observe your mind until you transcended it and come to the realization that you are one with it all, that you are the space, or context, out of which everything occurs.

Suffering? You’re Never Alone

Buddha was a crown prince with an overprotective father who shielded him from the ugly side of life. Siddhartha wined and dined with a profusion of dancing girls. Anything he wanted, he got instantly. Yet he was still not satisfied. One day, he came across a sick man, then an old decrepit man, and finally a dead corpse being carried off. Siddhartha came to the shocking realization that everything he was taught to believe in was phony.

Siddhartha chose to drop out, leaving his lovely wife and newborn son in the night, knowing they would be well cared for. He had to find the truth at any price, hinted at by the sannyasins he had met earlier who had dropped out, and told him of another way.

Accordingly, Siddhartha followed the path of asceticism until he became skin and bones, and yet he still couldn’t arrive at the truth. Being a genius and very well-educated, he wandered off from his companions, took food from a maiden and sat under a banyan tree until he would find both the truth about suffering, and the end of suffering.​

Enlightenment as an Institution

As a would be king, Siddhartha dreamt of a society in which enlightenment was everyone’s birthright. To do this, he would need to awaken, himself, and then find a way to catalyze that awakening in others. Not only that, Siddhartha would need to teach a generation of Indians so well that they would, in turn, teach others.

Siddhartha took anyone who wanted to follow him as a beggar. They simply needed to shave their hair and put on an ochre robe. They would follow and listen, forever asking questions. They would consider, not only what he said, but how he said it, and to whom. They would even reach toward the possibility of a silent, wordless transmission, as found in Zen.

The Buddha had the good fortune to be accompanied by men with flawless minds who remembered what he said in intricate detail. He created a mission statement upon his deathbed: Suffering, and the end of suffering. He kept it simple in the Four Noble Truths, and the Eightfold Path. All of us can count to at least ten. In doing this, he set the stage for the world’s first universal “religion.”​

The World’s First University

The institution of enlightenment within India had a profound impact upon South Asian civilization, ultimately transforming East Asia, and to a considerable extent, all the world. This process was accelerated by a young emperor, Ashoka, who, sick of the futility of conquest, decided to take up Buddhism for himself and institutionalize its principles.

Ashoka sent out missionaries to Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia, China and even the Mediterranean, which had become relevant after Alexander the Great’s attempted invasion. Buddhism had started as a dialogue and most of the sutras are in dialogue form, which makes them easier to remember. Truth is always anchored in experience. The ideal emerged to be “omniperspectival,” to recognize and honor every point of view.

Centuries later, Nalanda, in North India, was built as a major university where people all over the known world, including China, would come to learn. It would last from the 400’s C.E. to the 1200’s C.E. People learned the dialectic, very similar to that of Socrates, to an exquisitely fine degree. They would polish their expertise with vigorous debates as a public spectacle, competing for actual prizes.​

Hinduism Distilled for Export

The great Anglo-American philosopher, Alan Watts, who popularized Zen Buddhism, taught that Buddhism stripped Hinduism down to its bare essentials. It could then be understood by anyone, and transcend the borders of the Indus River Valley civilization.

You will hear of karma, dharma and reincarnation. However, Buddha redefined them in broader terms that might apply to anyone. Karma simply met you create what is happening. Dharma went beyond caste to your personal mission or destiny. Reincarnation was no longer dreaded, but something that could be transcended in a single lifetime.

Buddhism readily adapted to wherever it went, starting with China and Southeast Asia, Tibet and Japan and finally America. Each country and civilization got its essentials and reinterpreted it within its own cultural framework. When you realize that Buddhism is really an educational system for enlightenment, this makes sense.​

Incomparable Track Record of Peace

When we look at the great religious traditions, we find that Buddhism has inspired less wars, armed conflict or violence than almost any other faith. Granted, we recently see exceptions, such as in Sri Lanka and Myanmar. However, the long-term trend since Ashoka threw down his sword has been peace, noninjury, a recognition that all life is sacred and every human incarnation an incomparable opportunity.

The key lies in Buddha’s focus on suffering, and the means to alleviate it. Buddha never promised to eliminate physical pain. Rather, he focused on the mental and spiritual discomfort which make pain all the worse.

For example, a mother threw her dead son at Buddha’s feet, asking him to raise him from the dead. Buddha turned to her and asked her to go to every house in her village and find a family that hadn’t lost a member. She did, and of course, ended up following him.

Buddhism delivers peace in a way that could profit the Abrahamic religions, which all use “Peace” as their greeting. This has to do with its methodology to have people effectively deal with their monkey minds.

When the mind is still, you become peaceful with a powerful presence. You need not resort to violence. To the enlightened mind, violence, itself, is actually a form of weakness.

Buddha Our First Scientist

Siddhartha encouraged his followers to continuously question him as a way of learning. They were not to take his word as authority. They were not to “believe” in anything he said. They were encouraged to experientially prove their path to the very end of their lives.

Buddha was not born in the priestly class, but rather as a warrior and ruler. He had a very practical edge keener than most any other spiritual master. He made careful observations at a very deep level. He early on saw the interrelatedness of all things, which Thich Nhat Hanh calls INTERBEING. He thereby anticipated systems theory and quantum physics.

The Dalai Lama, in The Universe within an Atom, maintained that if a Buddhist tenet conflicts with contemporary science, it should be rejected. However, he also suggested that Buddhism, itself, is an inner science that perfectly complements the West’s empirical tradition. As I learned from Werner Erhard, deeply influenced by Zen, “Allow that which is to BE.”​

Believe in God? Try Experiencing Him!

You may be either Theistic, or Nontheistic in your orientation. You may prefer a personalized view of reality, or an impersonal view. You may prefer to think of “God” in the first, second or third person: “I,” “You,” or “It.” This will depend to a large degree on whichever faith tradition you were brought up.

In any case, we are all talking about the same God, our Source, the Supreme Self.

NONES, agnostics and atheists resonate to Buddhism because of its experiential, nondogmatic, pragmatic character. Why try to believe in God when you can immediately experience “It”? For many people, meditation is the fastest way to a direct hit. While psychoactive drugs have their uses, they are better as a means of opening up to the Transcendent than a means to sustain the experience.

Buddhism goes with any religion, because, at heart, it is profoundly educational and therapeutic. It shows you in very elegant terms how to go within and make contact. You can do this as a Christian, Muslim, Jewish Person or humanist.

It needn’t destroy your faith. Rather, it can illuminate your own tradition and make it real in a way it never was before. Very often, Westerners who go into Eastern philosophy and religion go back to their own Abrahamic tradition… only transformed. For example, I am a Universalist who finds my “home” on the interfaith map as a Christian / Hindu, or Hindu / Christian. While I have implicit faith in the Person of Christ, I am convinced that India has by far the best map of reality.​

Meet Buddha as Yourself

Youth may also resonate with Buddha, because he never claimed to be a god. He dedicated his life to empowering you to come to the same realization as he did. He laid it all out step-by-step. He was a learner, just as we are learners. Siddhartha Gautama didn’t become the Buddha (The Awoken One) to separate himself from us, but so that we could become one with him.

You will find great delight in studying Buddhism, either through courses, books and lectures, or through actual meditation and spiritual community, the Buddhist sangha’s. Have no fear. If your faith is well-grounded, it will never disappear. Rather, it will become a much deeper part of you and be immeasurably enriched by your personal encounter with Buddha.​

What Does Personal Charisma Really Mean? Do You Have It?

If you toughed it out monitoring the progress of the 2016 American Presidential election, watching all the debates and following the entire cast of characters, you may wonder where all the powerful inspiration has gone. What has happened to such dashing candidates as John F. Kennedy or Ronald Reagan?

Is this the best we can do?​

In that election, the only standouts were maverick candidates, Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders, who were willing to defy convention and craft powerful visions. Yet it would be a stretch to see either of them becoming true world leaders.

What happened?​

What Is Personal Charisma?

Personal charisma is almost a religious quality, something characterizing saints and spiritual masters of rare vintage. It traditionally tied into the divine anointing of kings, such as Israel’s King David, or the Baptism of Jesus Christ in the River Jordan. It literally means “gift” or “grace,” and grace refers to divine favor apart from merit.

One only need think of Morph and Neo in The Matrix Trilogy, where Neo is recognized by Morph to be “The Chosen One.” Neo follows the cycle of the reluctant hero, where he discovers a whole new reality and a stunning new destiny. The Universe has finally recognized his true genius in the digital world, and he has a personal mentor to walk him through all the essential steps to mastery.​

Personal charisma is that which makes a person a total standout from everyone around him or her. A charismatic leader, artist or performer is seen as being extraordinarily attractive and compelling, regardless of her actual appearance.

Like great actresses who made a name for themselves in Hollywood, they had everything going for themselves, youth, appearance, talent and intelligence. Yet all that was not enough. There was something else, a “star quality,” that the top agents saw in them from the very beginning.​

Why Is Personal Charisma So Essential?

Without personal charisma, you may hold a position of power and influence, and yet be regarded as a mere functionary, a competent manager who is anything but inspiring. Your employees would not even dream of dying for you or following you to the ends of the earth. For them, you are an unavoidable part of their job, someone to appease or outwit, depending on their mood.

With charisma, the world opens its doors to you.​

You become Queen for a Day, or Man of the Year, or even Person of the Century. Think of Steve Jobs, coming back to his first company, which was then six months from bankruptcy, inventing the “Think Different” campaign and coming up with the iMac and iPod. In less than 15 years, Steve turned Apple into the world’s most valuable company, and had successfully reinvented six industries. Every time Steve did a product rollout, the public would watch with avid attention his ultimate cool as a stage magician.

Personal charisma is indispensable if you want to make a lasting difference.

The great world teachers, Buddha, Christ and Mohammad, reached out for centuries, touching every single generation since their time. They are truly immortal, no matter what you believe or disbelieve about the afterlife. If you want your influence to survive your brief tour here, then you are going to want to tune into your own charisma.

How Do You Identify Personal Charisma in Others?

True charismatics have an indefinable presence that is utterly transformative. I stepped into a grand symphonic hall awaiting the acclaimed Sri Chinmoy. As soon as the great guru appeared before the audience, I immediately started tearing up. I couldn’t help it!

I also remember seeing Dr. Deepak Chopra at Grace Cathedral speaking in person for a couple of hours. I realized that I had been truly “stoned” for about four hours afterward. What these remarkable men said was far less important than their impact upon my own consciousness.​

I remember President Reagan coming back from Geneva in 1985 when he negotiated an end to the Cold War with General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev. Everyone in both parties and both houses of Congress spontaneously stood up and gave him a standing ovation before he even began speaking that seemed interminable. You could not watch this, even on TV, without tears in your eyes.​

I have watched the Dalai Lama in a large gymnasium on the campus of Stanford University addressing thousands of people with his broken English. Even though language was a major hurdle for him, the Dalai Lama was perfectly natural and unpretentious, like your next-door neighbor. He has a reputation of treating everyone he meets, including the janitor, like the most important person in the entire world.

Are You Simply Born with Personal Charisma?

It is far too easy to cop out and say, “I wasn’t born with a drop of charisma. So why even try?” 

People keep forgetting that Mahatma Gandhi, considered by many as the most powerful man in all the world, without even a suit of clothes on his back, took 50 years to realize his dream of bringing down the British Empire.

Two of the most talented musicians to ever walk a stage, Prince and Michael Jackson, constantly worked on their craft. When they were giving a live performance, they were like floodlights, 10,000 watts going off at once. They were more powerful than even the firecrackers arching over their heads. Their preparation never stopped. Their commitment was nothing less than total.​

They might not seem charismatic in every area of their life, but they shine in their field of expertise.

Why is it that all the Olympic winners have their own private coach? Even though they prepare eight or more hours a day for years, they constantly assess and correct their performance. Many of the great transformational leaders, such as Werner Erhard, literally studied acting and closely imitated acknowledged masters in the performing arts.

Can Personal Charisma Be Developed to a High Degree?

Charisma is of two types: Personal and Public. You can have extraordinary charisma without a public-facing role. Charisma has a lot to do with Vision, Presence and Mastery of a Craft, any craft.

Charismatic people never seriously entertain that life is meaningless or that they don’t have what it takes to fulfill their destiny. These people have discovered their Higher Self, and have a profound respect for Its power.

They have a spiritual practice that continuously cultivates a deep sense of presence, such that they can be totally there for anyone. They are also committed to their craft, to being world-class. World-class execution requires 10,000 or more hours until you can do it immaculately.

Each of us is born with a unique talent, and a capability of being charismatic.

Most of us as children and adolescents got profoundly discouraged by adults, and typically lost faith in ourselves, in others and often in life, itself. Those of us who remember, who reconnect with Higher Power, can make rapid progress in our adult life.

We can become charismatic in our own sphere, in our own particular calling.

What Steps Can You Take to Become More Charismatic?

Here are eight steps you can take to make you a vastly more charismatic person, someone who can move, touch and inspire everyone you meet.

Become more present. As you calm down your “monkey mind,” you will start to effortlessly be here and now. Life will become vastly richer and more enjoyable.

Give up blame. Be willing to look at everything that happens from the perspective that you have something to do with it, even to the point where you see your role in what another does to another.

Give thanks every day. List daily on a journal page specific things to be grateful for, even if just the shirt on your back. The cumulative effect will stun you.

Bless everyone you encounter. You can silently say as you meet people, “God bless you.” You will be amazed as your own attitude toward them starts to transform.

Discover your unique talent. Read Richard Bolles’ What Color Is Your Parachute? and start doing the exercises. You will finally have words to describe what you suspected was always there.

Open your heart and mind to truly love people… even if just a little. There is something lovable about everyone, even President Trump! There is no one on this planet today who could not use more love, even the greatest musicians and movie stars.

Decide to believe in what Higher Power can, and will, do for and through you. It is good to reflect on the Christian admonition: “Please be patient with me. God is not finished with me yet!”

Elect to become a World Citizen, and a Child of the Universe. If all of us decided to drop out and become world citizens, ever mindful of our, and everyone else’s, inherent divinity, we could realize world peace in a single generation.

What Can You Do Today to Become Charismatic in Your Own World?

You need only think of the most famous and popular figure in contemporary spirituality, Eckhart Tolle. Eckhart is one of the most unassuming and plain people you will ever meet. He is shy and totally unpretentious. He has nothing to prove, and yet he has written phenomenal bestsellers. People practically fight each other to be around him.

Eckhart presences everything. He is an excellent listener. His endless mental dialog crashed years ago, and it has never returned. He feels that enlightenment is no big deal. Enlightenment is everyone’s birthright. All we have to do is shut up, and start listening.​

Become more interested in others than yourself. Make each person you meet feel like the only person who matters in the whole wide world. Allow only magnificent people to surround you, by acknowledging the magnificence of everyone who crosses your path.

You might just become wildly popular, and far more charismatic than you ever imagined possible!
