Etude Du Coeur
Summary: Working on a last minute research project, it isn't just the topic of their presentation that Adrien and Marinette getting to know better, but each other as well.
This was originally intended for a zine centered around Adrienette, but that... ended poorly and I've finally gotten around to posting it here.
Also, Happy New Year, everyone! Let's see about if we can get started on the right foot this time.
Enjoy!
Read on Ao3
“We’re all clear on the plan, right?”
Adrien looked at Marinette, who in turn had her eyes narrowed suspiciously at Alya for some reason. All four of them were shrugging off their winter coats as they stepped out of the freezing cold and into the merely chilly interior of the old library.
“Yeah, chill girl,” Alya said dismissively. “We’re going to get as much work done on our project as we can.” She glanced around the large space of the library, with its tall bookshelves packed to the brim.
“Good…”
“We’ll probably need to split up to handle this though.”
“Wait no! That’s not what we-”
“I’m pretty sure there is a computer bay in the back,” Alya said over her shoulder as she grabbed Nino’s arm and all but ran that way. “Good luck with Adrien!”
“Wh- Alya!” Marinette yelled after her, but a nearby librarian shushed her. Looking irritated and a little panicked, she slowly turned to him. “So, um… looks like they wanted some space to themselves?”
Adrien laughed. “Yeah, those two are really into each other. Hopefully they actually do what they’re supposed to and don’t just… well... play super penguino all day.”
To his relief, she laughed with him at his joke, but she still seemed uncomfortable. Her hands stayed latched to the straps of her backpack as she wandered around the mostly empty library, Adrien following behind a couple steps behind her. Besides a few lonesome stragglers, the only other people they saw as they tried to find the ideal spot was Rose and Juleka. Only Rose, tired rings around her eyes, managed a quick smile and half-hearted squeak of joy when she spotted them before returning to their project.
At least they weren’t the only ones who had put this off until the last minute.
Eventually, they got a spot next to a merrily burning fireplace. He had known that Marinette didn’t like the cold much, so it didn’t come as much of a surprise. They left their coats and bags on the library table and although Marinette didn’t realize it, they were well protected under the semi-watchful eyes of a kwami. If nothing else, Plagg would make sure his cheese supply wasn’t stolen.
There wasn’t a whole lot of time to talk as they kept apart while looking for books. Adrien didn’t mind that, though. Talking or not, he liked to spend time with his friends in person. It also didn’t escape his notice that he almost never got any alone time with Marinette - and what few times he did get usually ended up in embarrassment for one of them. Like when they got chased across Paris by rabid fans, or when Adrien pretended to be a statue.
He winced. Not his best moment. Hopefully today would turn out better. After all, they were stuck together for at least the next few hours. Who knew if Nino and Alya would be meeting back up with them? Maybe Marinette and Adrien would be stuck together for the rest of the entire day.
All in all, as he sat down across from her at their space in front of the fireplace, saw her face scrunch up in adorable concentration as she began poring over a book and making notes on her laptop, the idea didn’t bother him in the slightest.
It was forty minutes into their study session before his attention started to falter and he looked for something to distract himself.
“Marinette?”
She fumbled the book she was holding, nearly dropping it. She only barely managed to catch it, but in the process closed it with such force that it echoed in the contemplative quiet of the library. With a wince, she set the book down and briefly glanced at him.
“Y-yes?”
“So… you don’t like the cold?” Although he kept a pleasant smile plastered on his face, he was screaming on the inside. Could he have come up with a lamer ice breaker? Science has yet to decide, but data is pointing in that direction.
“Y-yeah… I’ve never really liked it but it has been especially bad ever since-” Her eyes widened and she suddenly threw her hands over her mouth.
Naturally, this got him curious.
“Since… what?”
“Oh, just, um… since a little over a year ago. I, uh… I don’t know what happened exactly, but I got, ah, got even worse with the cold!” She laughed nervously before petering out. “So… yeah. Me and winter? We don’t get along.”
Adrien chuckled and spared a glance at the roaring fireplace to his left. “I can see that.”
With that conversation arriving at a dead end, Adrien tried to come up with some other topic. There had to be something that could get her talking for a while.
“Fashion!” Poor Marinette had been trying to take a book out of a stack when he blurted out that word and only managed to keep the stack from falling over by leaping up and hugging it. He winced. “Sorry. I just remembered I’ve been meaning to ask you about your fashion projects and stuff. I don’t get updated on them much.”
“Oh…” Marinette blinked in surprise. “Well, I’ve been juggling a lot of projects lately.” She put her hand on her face as she stared into the wood of the table in front of them, deep in thought. “Christmas is coming up after all and I… may have bitten off a little too much this time.”
“Really?” Adrien’s eyebrows rose. “How many people are you making gifts for this year?” He flashed a teasing smirk. “Am I one of them?”
“Well… yes.”
Adrien blinked in surprise. “Wait, really?”
“Of course!” Marinette frowned and looked at him with concern. “...Did you think I wouldn’t?”
“I guess I figured you would be busy with everything else.”
“I’ll always make time for my friends.”
Adrien smiled softly at her. “Thanks.” A thought occurred to him. “Do you need my measurements?”
“Oh, don’t worry about that-” Again, she suddenly froze and cut herself off.
His voice took on a teasing quality. “I shouldn’t be surprised. I mean, you are a big fan of my work after all.”
There was a glimpse of a blush spreading across her cheeks before she buried her face in her hands. She groaned.
“Aw, I’m sorry Marinette.” His smile faded. “I didn’t mean to upset you.”
After a few moments she sighed and uncurled herself. “It's fine. Just a little... embarrassing is all.”
Adrien rubbed the back of his neck. “That seems to happen a lot when we hang out.”
“I guess that means we’ll have to hang out more to break that curse.” Her eyes widened as if she was surprised at her own words and she immediately began to backtrack. “I mean- that’s not the only reason we’d hang out! If you even want to hang out, it's totally cool if you-”
“Marinette?”
“Yes?”
“Breathe.”
“R-right.”
While she took a few calming breaths, he added, “Let’s just see if I can get through today without embarrassing you any more and we’ll see how you feel after that.”
She giggled, and Adrien thought it was one of the best sounds in the world.
“Well, what about you?”
“Me?”
“Yeah. What, um, what do you do for hobbies?”
“Oh, well I’ve got…” He held up his hand and counted down on his fingers. “Fencing, piano, basketball, modeling, and sometimes voice acting.”
“Wow! That all sounds pretty fun. It’s got to be interesting at least.”
Adrien shrugged. “I guess so.”
“...Are they not?” Marinette’s enthusiasm dampened.
“Well, they would be by themselves. Fencing is a great way to stay in shape and I like playing the piano sometimes. It’s just…” He ran his fingers through his hair and leaned back in his chair. “I can’t just enjoy them. I’ve got to be the best at them or be perfect. Otherwise Father chews me out about it.” He leaned forward again, shaking his head as he hunched over the table. “That kind of takes all the fun out of it.”
“Oh,” Marinette said simply. “I never thought about it like that… That sounds exhausting since that takes up pretty much all of your time.” He gave her a curious look and she cleared her throat, a slight blush creeping onto her cheeks. “Or, um, that’s what it sounds like. It’s not like I’ve memorized your schedule or anything.”
“Of course.” He smiled at her. She said the weirdest things when she got nervous. Feeling a little mischievous he added, “Posters of me all on your wall? That’s fine. Keeping track of what things I do? Now that’s a bridge too far.”
“If only your fans could see you now,” Marinette said, shaking her head sadly. “They’d see how mean you really are.” Adrien laughed and she quickly joined him.
“You two seem to be getting along alright.”
Adrien jumped at the sudden new voice, his eyes flying open to reveal Alya and Nino approaching their table. There was a calculating gleam in her eye, while Nino simply wore a pleased look on his face as he looked between him and Marinette.
“How is the research coming along?” Adrien glanced between them and allowed himself a smirk. “You… have been doing at least some research, right?”
“Chill, bro,” Nino said, rolling his eyes. “We’ve been supes on top of things. We just wanna make sure you dudes are on the level too.”
“Say, blondie.” Alya surprised him by pulling up a seat next to him rather than next to Marinette. Instead, Nino had taken that spot. “Have you been a long time fan of the Ladyblog?”
Adrien blinked and tried to keep up with the sudden topic change. “I- um- yes?”
“Cool, cool. Did I ever tell you about Darkblade and Syren?”
“I… read the articles.” Plus he'd been part of the fights, but he wasn’t about to say that.
“Yeah but this part I didn’t write much about. My girl-” she gestured across the table toward Marinette, where Nino was grinning and pointing toward her “-really took charge during those akumas.”
“Alya-” Marinette began, whining. Her face was getting red with embarrassment, but Adrien was intrigued. He knew that his classmates had been close to ground zero in those akuma battles, but he wasn’t sure what exactly happened to them after he transformed.
“During Darkblade’s attack, our girl rallied the whole class and fortified the capital building. That’s probably why we lasted as long as we did while Ladybug and Chat Noir fought the knights.”
“Oh wow, really?” He looked over to Marinette. “That was pretty brave of you, Marinette!”
“Then get ready for this, blondie.” Alya pushed up her glasses while her best friend groaned and faceplanted the table. “During Syren’s attack, she got us all to higher ground and then jumped into a garbage bin.”
“A… garbage bin?” Adrien blinked, running it over in his head. Nope, still didn’t make sense. “Why?”
“Well, she started paddling off to go get help. The cure fixed everything before it was too big of a problem, but it takes guts to go onto akuma-infested waters with nothing but a trash can for a ship, right?”
“That is pretty gutsy of you, Marinette,” Adrien addressed the mass of flattered embarrassment that was his study partner.
“It’s been nice chatting, but we should probably get back to our end of the research.” Alya and Nino quickly got up and started walking away. “Good luck you two!”
Adrien waved but once they had left he furrowed his eyebrows in confusion. Did they even ask about how far along they were in their research? He didn’t think so, but he wasn’t sure.
Still, what they had said had given him something to think about as he slowly got Marinette talking again. He knew that he was the one who had given her the nickname of their ‘everyday Ladybug’, but he hadn’t realized just how apt it was. She had a lot of the qualities that he so loved in his lady - bravery, natural leadership, creativity.
That revelation stuck in his head as they worked, stayed in there for hours and hours. By the end of the day, it was still at the forefront of his mind.
Maybe it shouldn’t have come as any surprise when Marinette asked, “So, um… this was nice. Spending time with you and everything. I was wondering if… maybe, if you could find the time and felt up to it… if you wanted to maybe get a coffee or something with me?”
That he replied, “That sounds great.”

We All Pay for Power
Even at sunset, the yellow fireball in the sky was scorching hot. Not a single waking soul around for miles, save for a dusty old pickup truck roaring down the lonesome road. Its driver and passenger traveled closer and closer towards an even dustier, even older tour bus. The unforgiving desert winds swept over them.
Layers of grit and grains of sand caked the windows of what looked like a steel whale, beached in the Nevada desert. Far away from the road, in a circle of cacti, resting in a place invisible to natural eyes.
But the truck’s driver knew how to find it. The wheels spun and screeched as she veered off the thin strip of cracked asphalt, cutting through the landscape of red sand, sparse vegetation, and rocky hills. The tires found traction and dug into the dirt, carrying the truck closer to the old abandoned bus.
With each inch the truck drove closer to the bus, the sky darkened. Defying nature’s laws. Devouring the sun before it even set in due time. The black void of a nightly sky opened up overhead, and the darkness between the stars loomed ever-darker in between the tiny lights.
Watchful, and hungry.
The driver cut the engine. The pickup truck continued rolling until she hit the brakes and rocks and dust ground underneath the wheels, stalling the machine till it lurched forward and fully stopped.
She was the first out of the vehicle, grabbing a sawed-off double-barreled shotgun and slamming the car door shut behind her—the noise echoing through this pocket of Otherworld, hidden away in the desert. Paying no mind to how the starry sky had appeared before sunset and the sun vanished. This was not Kim’s first time of crossing over into another dimension that looked similar to our own on the surface.
Unlike Javier, who hopped out of the car next, leaving the passenger seat open. He stared up at the sky in disbelief.
“The fuck?” he asked. Getting no answer.
Kim did not reply. She approached the dusty old tour bus with steady steps.
Javi’s gaze wandered, coming to rest on the cacti nearby. Their thorns took the shape of wicked little knives; crooked and jagged and sharp-edged. Their stalks twisted to elongated, thin shapes that did not belong on Earth.
“Hey, Kim, seriously. What the fuck?”
He got no answer from her. She held the shotgun in her hand and slowed down before she arrived by the tour bus’ open door. Something echoed through space and time, as if it had just burst open mere moments ago. But now, the door leading inside the bus swayed gently in the wind. The metal of its hinges creaked eerily.
A dark presence waited inside. Palpable. Watching. Born from the void between the stars, coalescing in the bowels of this steel giant, taking familiar shapes. Silver eyes that peered outwards, that Kim could not yet see, but eyes that saw her clearly before she entered. Piercing through matter, through the veil between worlds.
Having spotted something that vaguely resembled a vulture, Javi backed away from the truck and towards the bus, following Kim without looking where he went. The winged creature on the rocks glared at him and he broke out into a cold sweat as their eyes met and the thing’s stare locked onto him.
It crept closer, like a four-legged predator, crawling over the bend of the rock, stopping on its perch and flapping its leathery wings twice. It didn’t look too much like a vulture anymore, owed to many sharp teeth in its beak and the eight eyes on its unfathomably hairy face.
Kim raised her weapon and entered the bus, oblivious to Javi’s panicked breathing as he stumbled backwards and caught up to her. He had his hunting knife and revolver out, ready for the winged thing to pounce, but it just waited. And watched.
Like the entity inside.
They entered the bus, back to back.
Plastic clicked, and Kim swept her flashlight’s cone of illumination across the darkened interior of the abandoned bus. The leather on the seats had been chewed up by time and tiny teeth. Piles of trash littered the place all over, making it look like a hurricane had hit someone’s belongings and scattered them about.
Someone had pinned vast amounts of newspaper clippings to one wall. Everything from serious reporting to lousy tabloids had found its way here. Reports of two missing men, Brent Carver and Rick Sutton, members of the indie rock band The Lost Number. The only remaining person in the group was Kevin, whose mugshot adorned one of the cut-out articles.
Kim remembered the story from her research: how two of the three band members vanished mysteriously out here in the desert, how no bodies were ever found, and how the police eventually released Kevin into the wild where he started a new life.
The punchline of the articles continued on from there, following Kevin’s ensuing career trajectory. The flamboyant, cross-dressing bassist player of a dead-end rock band had transformed into a successful stage magician on the Strip with a cult following. A snippet from a Rolling Stone interview book-ended the assortment of notes.
In red color, someone had spray-painted over the tail end of this creepy collage:
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR
Javi gasped when something cracked and he spun around. The plastic of a CD case broke underneath his boot; an autographed copy of the EP, Sexy Vampire in the Basement by The Lost Number. He stepped away from it, stumbling over empty cans of beans and bacon and other assorted canned food, kicking loose a brief cacophony of clattering and clanking.
Kim glared at Javi, silently imploring him to stop being so jumpy.
The wind outside picked up, resembling a coyote’s howl. But unlike a natural animal’s howl, it petered out into a ghastly screech. Something flapped its horrid wings to underline the ungodly origins.
From the darkness, deeper inside the bus, silver eyes stared out, watching the two new arrivals.
“Did he live here?” Javi asked. His voice trembled. So did he—his entire body.
Even if he couldn’t see the presence, he felt it.
Kim refused to answer. This was not a place to answer redundant questions.
“How can anybody live like this?”
Kim set her jaw, shining the flashlight down the narrow corridor of the bus into its deepest parts, where the silver eyes awaited them.
Finally, she answered, “Power always has a price. We all pay for it in our own ways. And this—this was his way.”
Someone cleared his throat and Kim pointed her gun in that direction. The darkness swallowed the cone of light, though a set of two eyes reflected it back as they blinked. A man in black sat there, in the bedroom at the end of the bus. Lounging on the beds, legs crossed, hands folded behind his head. Not a care in the world.
Bright white, clean teeth bared, a wide grin plastered across a face of handsome features. Chiseled, sharp jawline, symmetrical. A glint of the devil’s own confidence in his eyes.
“Can I help you?” he asked. Smooth voice—like smoke and velvet rolling over sanded stone.
Kim and Javi approached with careful paces, stepping over the trash heaps strewn about the floor. Both of them had their guns pointed at the stranger.
He budged not one bit, sitting like he belonged here. Garbed in black leather boots, dark jeans, and a crumpled old duster over a fancy black cowboy shirt with red patterns on it, this guy had the air of both a rich man and a vagrant.
“Are you Michael?” Kim asked him.
“No,” he lied. His smile widened. His steel blue eyes turned silver for a split second of the flashlight blinding him. He didn’t even blink this time. Lapped up the attention. Drank in their anxiety, thirsting for their fear.
Sprawled out in front of him was a circle of odd objects. Kim scanned over them with a quick glance, not quite registering what all of them meant or represented.
A circle of rice grains outlined the circle clearly, framed by a square of metal legs broken off a chair. In a pattern inside these shapes rested a tourist trap postcard from the Grand Canyon, a coyote’s skull, a tiny crucifix fastened to an old-timey alarm clock, a pill bottle of Alprazolam filled with black-painted fingernail clippings, a spiked dog collar, a folded piece of paper stuffed with a dark powder spilling out of the seams, and a pile of paperback novel covers glued together. Blue paint chippings covered the various objects.
“Please, let me know how I can help. Are you looking for Kevin?” asked Michael. “So am I. Perhaps we can help each other.”
“Don’t listen to him. He’s fuckin’ lyin’,” Javi said. He emphasized that by taking a threatening step towards Michael, but Kim elbowed him to stop him in his tracks.
“Stay outta the circle,” she growled at Javi.
Michael raised his hands, displaying his open empty palms. He brought his hands together and steepled his fingers like some sort of discount villain.
“You might as well put those lil’ peashooters away. Even if you manage to waste me, you gotta deal with Smokey out there,” Michael said, gesturing at the way they had come from.
The cawing shriek pierced the air, followed by more flapping of the wings. Something heavy landed on top of the tour bus, thumping. Sharp claws scraped over the metal, and one of its many beady red eyes peeked in through an old bullet hole in the roof. It kept moving, thumping until it stopped, out of sight. Right above them.
Both Kim and Javi found they had been holding their breath all the while.
“You spill one drop o’ blood in here, then Ol’ Smokey’s gonna be all over this place like flies on shit. And none of us are gonna look pretty at the end of it,” Michael said. The smile slowly faded from his visage, lending credence to the visceral danger lurking just outside.
“We can find your friend if we join forces. Work together,” Michael lied again.
Javi’s lips curled into a sneer but he swallowed any remark, and Kim picked up on the subtle cue. He could sense Michael’s lying. He smelled bullshit five miles against the wind, which is why she had brought him along.
“Alright, whaddya got?” she asked the sorcerer.
Michael smiled again. Like the wolf inviting Little Red Riding Hood inside.
He raised a hand, index finger outstretched, cautioning them away from shooting him and indicating that he was not about to draw a weapon. Digging his other hand into his coat’s pocket, he produced a small silver object.
A flip-top phone from the early 2000s. He held it out for a second, and then gently tossed it across the room to the two. It clattered onto the ratty carpeted floor in front of Kim’s boot. She handed Javi her flashlight and picked up the phone.
Flipped it open. Didn’t question why it still had juice, because nothing needed to make sense in this pocket space adjacent to Earth. No network, all sorts of little arcane symbols blinking on the display. Memory full. The buttons triggered ridiculous little beeps as she thumbed her way through the phone’s storage, browsing through a set of photos.
Kevin was on each of them, striking different poses in front of a mirror, dolled up with make-up and wearing women’s clothes. She always knew him from his stage performances as a magician to pull off the androgynous look quite well, so it did not surprise her that he looked rather pretty as a woman.
Without looking up, continuing to click through them in hopes of finding anything unusual, she asked, “Anything else?”
Michael pointed to something behind the two.
“Yeah. What do you see in there?”
She clapped the phone shut and pocketed it in her jacket then followed the cone of light that Javi shone on the object behind them.
A heavy-looking safe with a digital lock, its display dull and deactivated, its door open. It was empty except for a mirror sitting in it, pushed up against the back wall of the safe’s hollow belly. Kim and Javi only saw themselves inside of it.
Then Kim spotted the silver eyes creeping up behind them, closer and closer. Shining out from a cloud of darkness, billowing out and growing and preparing to engulf them.
She spun around and the deafening shot from her gun made way for a vicious ringing in their ears. Kim frantically pointed the gun around, looking for a target, but she had hit no person, only blown a hole through the back wall of the bus where Michael had been sitting mere seconds before.
“This how you thank me for helpin’?” Michael’s voice spilled out. Everywhere, and nowhere at the same time. Like a voice in the back of their heads, like he was telepathically communicating with them.
“Run,” Kim breathed.
Javi didn’t need to hear it twice. He tripped over some of the junk on the way out but was out of the bus within a matter of heartbeats, kicking up sand as he sprinted towards the pickup truck.
The cloud gathered, swirling and pooling in the corners inside the bus where silver eyes opened in its center, staring at Kim.
“You’re just as messed in the head,” Michael said. His laughter erupted, revolving and booming and growing in volume like the stifling black fog that filled the bus.
Kim coughed and held her breath, stumbling away from the bedroom. The thing outside cawed. Thumped, thundered, as it climbed down the side of the bus. Claws sliced through steel, causing the metal to screech under the pressure of the creature’s tremendous weight.
Michael’s laughter swelled to a crescendo and stopped abruptly.
His voice right in Kim’s ear, “He tried to cheat his way outta the deal. And if you try to help him, you’re just gettin’ in on the cheatin’. And you don’t wanna know how I’m gonna deal with you. You girls don’t know what repercussions you’re lookin’ at.”
She fired another shot, blindly at where his voice had come from. The wind howled, and so did Michael, one of them expressing otherworldly hunger, the other incredible pain. He tripped and slipped on old magazines and fell. Blood had sprayed against the walls inside the bus and he coughed.
“Bitch—”
He groaned and held his side, collapsing onto one of the chewed up couches. In his hand he held a mean-looking knife—something straight out of a horror movie, all jagged and meant for unholy rituals.
“See you in hell,” Kim muttered, scrambling away from him. The junk around her clanked and she tumbled down the short set of stairs leading out of the bus.
The pickup truck’s engine roared and its wheels kicked up sand as it spun around, sliding to a halt next to her. Kim’s eyes went wide but she hoisted herself back up onto her feet. Ripped open the passenger door as it banged against the frame without engaging and Javi hit the gas pedal, making the ragged old engine growl and roar again.
The truck sped off before she even slammed the door shut, and the vehicle kicked up more sand. The distance towards the bus rapidly grew. The winged thing peered after them with its eight red eyes.
With trembling hands, Kim blindly reloaded both barrels of her still-smoking shotgun, craning her neck to observe what the creature would do next.
It defied her expectations—did not leap or fly after the pickup truck. It instead swung around the edge of the bus, moving like molten, living shadows. Folded its wings up behind its back and crawled inside the yawning door, leading into the bus.
Michael’s screams of agony pierced the heavens, louder than the wind, and the old tour bus of The Lost Number shook violently as a struggle for life and death ensued inside there.
The radio in the truck screeched, almost like the creature, followed by garbled static and white noise. Kim hit buttons on it until she silenced the device.
A gust of wind kicked up a huge cloud of sand, sweeping over the truck and causing both driver and passenger to cough until the air cleared.
The sky had changed, the starry night making way for the warm orange tones of the sunset. The natural one. Earth.
Kim and Javi looked into the rear view mirror, seeing no bus, no alien-looking cacti, no winged monstrosity that belonged in another world.
They allowed themselves to breathe, emitting sighs of relief, knowing they could put this experience behind themselves. Maybe get a good night’s sleep some day.
They wouldn’t even talk about it for the next ten miles. Dealing with these sorts of things took it out of you. The unnatural always gave you that extra little oomph to unpack later on.
For the entire ride back to Vegas, they failed to notice the disgusting, football-sized egg stuck inside the back of the pickup truck.
They would only find it after it had hatched.

Wisdom Has a New Chick!
Article by Elena Fischer, External Affairs Kupu AmeriCorps Intern with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Wisdom, a Laysan albatross and world’s oldest known, banded wild bird has hatched a new chick at Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge and Battle of Midway National Memorial. She is at least 68 years old, has raised between 31-36 chicks in her lifetime, and is still going!
Wisdom was first sighted at her nest site on November 29, 2018 and laid an egg soon after.  It is uncommon for albatross to return to, lay, and hatch an egg every single year.  However, Wisdom and her mate have done this at Midway Atoll in   Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument each year since 2006.

Albatross spend 90% of their life at sea where they soar over the ocean for days on end and rest on the waves to feed on squid and fish eggs. And all albatross return nearly every year to the place they were born.  Millions of albatross return to Midway Atoll each year to nest and raise their young. This behavior is known as “nest site fidelity” and it makes places with large colonies of nesting birds, like Midway Atoll, critically important for the future survival of seabirds like Wisdom.  In 2017, the chick that she fledged in 2001 was observed just a few feet away from her current nest, marking the first time a returning chick of hers has been documented.
“She’s incredibly powerful as a symbol of why we do what we do and why people all over the world pay attention to her,” said Beth Flint, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Wildlife Biologist.  Wisdom is rewriting history about our understanding of “survivorship, how long birds live, and how often they breed.”
Raising Albatross Chicks
Raising the next generation of albatross is no easy job. Albatross return starting in October to meet their mate, and will spend approximately seven months on Midway Atoll to incubate and raise their chick.  Albatrosses lay a single egg and both parents take turns incubating it for a little over two months.  When not on parenting duty, Wisdom and Akeakamai take turns foraging for food. After the chick hatches, another five to six months will pass before it leaves the island to fly out to sea, or “fledge”.  This process takes up so much time and energy, so most Laysan albatross do not lay an egg every year.
“Because Laysan albatross don’t lay eggs every year and when they do, they raise only one chick at a time, the contribution of even one bird to the population makes a difference,” said Bob Peyton, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Project Leader for Midway Atoll Refuge and Memorial.
For the first years of their lives, albatross grow and mature at sea. Starting around age five, juvenile Laysan return to their home colony during breeding season and begin the search for a mate - a process that can take years.  During nesting season, juvenile albatross can be found all over Midway Atoll practicing elaborate courtship dances or dozens of ritualized movements. When they find that special bird to dip, bow, and preen with, the pair stays bonded for life.

Conserving Albatross’ Home
There aren’t many places left for Laysan Albatross to nest, and Midway Atoll is by far the most important Laysan Albatross colony in the world.  Nearly 70% of the world’s Laysan albatross, almost 40% of Black-footed albatross, and endangered Short-tailed albatross all rely on Midway Atoll. In addition to albatross, there are 20 different bird species that live on Midway Atoll. In total, over three million individual birds call the Refuge and Memorial home.

Throughout the Monument, scientific research and monitoring plays an essential role in managing wildlife, including seabirds. Surveys and banding projects conducted in the Monument and throughout the world help scientists better understand the life cycles and migration patterns of birds. Wisdom was first identified and banded by biologists as an adult in 1956, but the very first albatross was banded on Midway Atoll in 1936. To date over 250,000 albatross have been banded at the Refuge and Memorial. By pairing modern data analysis with detailed current and historical records, biologists can make more informed management decisions that ensure seabirds have the habitat and resources they need in the future.
Biologists with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are working to restore the habitat seabirds need at Midway Atoll and remove threats like invasive predators - because protecting the future for seabirds mean protecting the places they call home.

And Awaken in a New One
Kim broke out of her trance when the car door slammed shut. She blinked and knew they had passed into the otherworld already. On the surface, it almost looked the same as the world they hailed from. But it had changed.
The blue covering the canvas of the sky around the horizon rippled gently, like a heavenly pond into which stones had been cast. The Hidden Deserts That Had No Name reflected bright light from everywhere and nowhere, with no sun to be seen, wherever she looked. The mountains in the distance refused to stand still and moved—ever so slightly, like the ebb and flow of an ocean lapping lazily at the shoreline of a beach.
The clouds drifting through the air coiled and began moving in the direction of where their car was parked. Like snakes, those clouds crawled towards them.
Although they moved slowly, their steady creeping told Kim to limit her time here.
The car slumped forward a tiny bit when the weight of Javi sitting on its hood depressed it. He was the one who had slammed the door shut and now he lit up a cigarette with a stainless steel lighter, flicking the little silvery thing shut in a fluid and practiced motion right when a puff of white smoke arose from his face.
Strange bushes topped the sands. Unlike the ones native to the Nevada desert from where they had crossed over into here, these plants featured purple color and shivered out of sync with the warm breeze sweeping over these rocky plains.
Javi took a drag from his cigarette, puffed it out with haste and pointed at the clouds. The car’s windows muffled his words, “Only a matter o’ time till those—whatever those are—till those things get to us.”
Kim got out of the car as well. Letting her gaze sweep across the sky above them made her dizzy and almost a bit sick to her stomach. The watery nature of the above offered no solid point to focus on and the unsteady mountains, too, refused to help.
The only thing that looked the same from their last visit: the old black tour bus of the band once known as The Lost Number, standing lonesome in the middle of this desert, caked in sand and beached like a steel whale. Like one of those anchors that existed in different timelines and dimensions, all tenuously connected by such rare universal constants.
She sat herself onto the hood next to Javi and plucked the cigarette from his fingers, then took a long drag from it. The words escaped her lungs like the smoke—scratchy and labored—when she said, “How long have you been a smoker?”
In the previous world, Javi had never smoked. One of many small details that had shifted, ever so slightly, when she returned from the House of Change—when the world was reborn.
“I started when I was, uh, like, eleven, I think?” he said with a shrugging twitch of his left shoulder.
“You not worried about cancer?” she asked while handing him back the cigarette and studying every inch of his face.
The messy black hair on his head and a burly stubble lining his sharp jaw framed a face as handsome as ever—that much had not changed. Plenty of reality’s details had stayed the same, at least on the surface. The eerie light of this otherworld sparkled in his dark eyes as he studied Kim with a curiosity to match her own.
His shoulder twitched again, accompanied by a tilt of his head as he replied, “Lotta things can kill me, and statistically speaking, I think one o’ these hunka-junks is gonna do me in first.”
Javi thrust out a thumb to the sports car they were sitting on. Although dirt and dried mud clung to its every surface, the fast vehicle standing still underneath them looked way too fancy for their budget.
“Look, not to be a pain in the—” he started, the thought trailing off. “You might wanna—”
His sentences kept dying halfway out of his mouth. She knew what he was getting at, his eyes darted up, towards sky, to underline that.
The clouds kept creeping. Ever closer. Like snakes in the water, homing in on them. On prey.
She nodded to him and peeled her eyes off of the living clouds, meeting his gaze again. Lingering there for a longing amount of time.
Kim wondered if she should ever tell him about all the things she noticed that had changed with the world. So many subtleties, so many curious details—so fascinating. And the more often she slept and the more she dreamt, the more the last world felt like a distant, fading memory. Javi would understand, she thought. But what was the point?
She wished none of the previous world back. Precious to some, meaningless to her. Some of the key differences to this one were all that mattered to her.
She pushed herself off the hood of the car and started walking towards the stranded tour bus. Mystified by how it had been taking less years to decay in this secret desert than would be natural.
“You want me to, uh?” he started muttering behind her.
“No, s'all good,” she breathed.
The closer she strayed towards the bleached black body of bus, the more her chest tightened.
It represented a cornerstone—or a pillar—the things that held the fabric of reality together despite any transitions from one world to the next. A bridge through space and time and likely the only reason that an invisible pocket of void connected our reborn world to this one, here. Now. And never.
Gunshot holes still pockmarked the walls of the bus, having been torn from the inside out. Other holes had been punched into it by long, dagger-like claws of an unspeakable creature.
The memory of Michael’s screams echoed in her mind. She stuffed back down whatever guilt that brought bubbling up, shoving it into the cellar of repressed memories and slamming the door shut.
Something else—something physical—slammed shut behind her, prompting her to pause and look back. Javi had removed a beaten up backpack from the trunk, sagging from his one hand, the cigarette in the other. He had started dragging his heel over the ground, drawing a crude circle into the sand around his car. The first step in crafting a ritual ward to keep otherworldly entities like ghosts and demons at bay.
He stopped for a second, looked up at her, and waggled his eyebrows with a twitch about the corners of his lips. As if to politely remind her to hurry things up.
She flashed a smile back at him and returned her attention to the abandoned tour bus. Only with delay did she notice how she had sucked in a good amount of air and was now holding her breath. Her whole body had tensed up.
Kim produced the revolver whose weight had been burning an imaginary hole into her leather jacket’s pocket, and gripped it tightly. She pulled the ajar door fully open and ascended the small stairs, entering the bowels of the steel husk. The door did not want to stand still and swayed in the wind, emitting high-pitched squeaks as its hinges creaked.
She raised her weapon and pointed it wherever she looked, wary of any threat that might be lurking in here.
But nothing awaited. Nothing hungry, and nothing alive, at the very least.
It all looked the same. A painful reminder of a recent past and distant memories alike.
Time had chewed up the dark red leather on the seats everywhere. Heaps of trash still littered the bus’ interior, matching the cliche of a rock star’s devastated hotel room.
Nails still pinned newspaper clippings to one wall, though some of them had fallen out and joined the junk on the floor. Reports of two men who had mysteriously gone missing—a Brent Carver and a Rick Sutton—members of the defunct indie rock band named “The Lost Number.” According to the jumble of clippings, only one band member had not vanished without a trace: Kevin Spilner.
Yet he only existed in the past now, and as far as Kim was concerned, would stay there.
Forever.
His mugshot, painfully familiar to her, still clung to one of the cut-out articles despite the ink’s slow process of fading. She did not like looking into the mirror and seeing that face anymore.
Although the rebirth of the world rendered memories of the previous one blurrier and fuzzier with the passage of time, flashes of that past life haunted her, flashing through her mind like the flashes atop old analog cameras.
How Brent and Rick disappeared out here in the desert, how no bodies were ever found, and how the police eventually released Kevin into the wild where he started a new life. And eventually found Kim.
The plastic of a broken CD case crunched underneath Kim’s shoe as she stepped over a pile of crumpled cans and walked deeper into the hopeless bus.
Nobody and nothing worthwhile here. As if she had been holding her breath all this time, she exhaled a deep sigh and lowered her gun, though her muscles refrained from relaxing. The tension remained.
She lifted her shoe and inspected the jewel case that had splintered underneath her step: an autographed copy of the EP, Sexy Vampire in the Basement by The Lost Number. The stylized photo of the three band members adorning its artwork, dressed like douchebags, replete with their faux hawk hairdos that had been the fashion du jour of any grunge band at the time.
It took her a second to realize the sharp sting of pain that began throbbing from her left palm. Inspecting it showed only that she had dug her fingernails deep into it from the sheer tension gripping her all the while. She sighed again.
Looked up. Followed the rest of the line of articles plastering the wall. The rest of Kevin’s career trajectory.
Either the rebirth of the world had changed nothing of it, or this pocket dimension had preserved this glimpse into a different age and existence. The flamboyant, cross-dressing bass player of the critically panned rock band had transformed into a successful stage magician on the Strip over the years that followed, drawing a small cult following. A snippet from a Rolling Stone interview book-ended the assortment of notes.
In red color, years ago, Kevin had spray-painted over the tail end of this creepy collage:
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR
Kim sighed again and let her gaze sweep over the sad past, just one more time. The pile of discarded cans of beans and bacon and empty lighter fluid, the ridiculous number of empty cigarette boxes stacked up on the table.
What a pathetic mess.
Struggling to grasp how long she had lived here, hiding out in this pocket space—it disgusted her. She had hid from the world for too long, in a place where mundane folk never wandered, where only demons and ghosts and rejects found comfort in dwelling.
She swallowed the lump of nothingness that had gotten itself stuck in her throat and had one last thing she wanted to look at.
The thing sitting in the back of the safe, sitting in the back of the tour bus. It was what she had come for.
Blood and gore had been sprayed and splattered along the narrow, almost claustrophobic walls leading ever deeper inside, long dried and flaking off. A strange substance, black like pitch and now with the consistency of caked, cracked mud now covered the area. Kim’s mind reeled with the imagination of how a creature native to this world had dissolved into goo there.
To get to that safe, to get to that thing she sought, she would have to walk this narrow corridor. Through the refuse and the haunting clues of past violence.
The only reason to brave this wretched place.
After taking the first steps, registering the taste of grit on her tongue, and finding that her knuckles had whitened as a result of how tightly she gripped the gun in her hand, she realized how fast her heart was racing. Pounding away.
Crunching and thumping noises behind her caused her to spin around and point the gun—at Javi, who stumbled up the stairs into the bus. She lowered her gun but the tension only grew, for panic marred his pretty face.
And terror made his voice tremble in an unsettling contrast to the words he said next, “Okay, time’s up. We got a problem, baby girl.”
Through gritted teeth, she asked, “What?”
Her gun rose, following suit as he raised the sawed-off shotgun in his hands, backing away from the entrance as if to back away from an invisible threat, twitching at every sound of the breeze pouring in through the bullet holes in the body of the bus.
The wind picked up and shook the world around them, like an earthquake. A chorus of whispers engulfed them. But not like wind should. Gibbering and incomprehensible but clearly words. Alien.
She stepped forward, some of the cans and plastic trash clattered and rustled underfoot as Javi and Kim ducked closer to one another, guns pointing away from each other, backing up until their backs touched.
“Ritual ward ain’t workin’ no more,” he said, voice still shaking. Before she could answer that, he added, “And no, I didn’t make no mistake. Somethin’s wrong.”
Something big moved, obscuring the otherworld’s diffuse light and making it flicker as the body of a huge serpent-like shape coiled around the bus, suffocating the light. It howled. Then whispered again.
“No, I don’t think it was you,” Kim breathed. “Shit, I shoulda known bett—"
The bus shook violently and the steel groaned. Screeched in pain. The metal twisted, bent. The walls slumped inwards, gripped and deformed by tremendous force. And that deafening howl resounded again, carrying with it a chorus of furious whispers, only intervals in the rising storm of howls and screeches.
“Let’s hope bullets work,” Javi shouted over the cacophony.
The muzzle flare made Kim see stars for a second, accompanied by black spots in her field of vision. Making the presence of the thick white clouds wrapping and coiling around the bus all the more menacing. And a sharp ringing in her ears followed the thunderclap of Javi’s shot. And then the next.
The howling turned to screeching, fluid and somehow alive, unlike the metal being rent apart.
She squinted and took a shot at something that appeared more solid than the rest, and the unnatural howls that followed suggested that bullets might be working after all.
Bright light flooded the inside of the bus, spreading to the tune of more metal being peeled back like an onion’s skins. The hungry cloud ripped away the entire ceiling and a roiling mass of living white smoke loomed over them.
Javi’s next shot made it recoil. It moved like a dragon with dozens of short limbs, more like a centipede. Its form defied definition. Kim could almost make out something resembling a neck. That neck ended in something resembling a hungry maw, consisting of thousands of teeth that were not teeth, struggling to take shape and just flowing like water and solidifying and back and forth.
She shot into the center of whatever this thing was and it screeched again, dispersing just like any cloud should but reshaping at the edges of the torn metal ceiling and taking cover from their shots. Looming, like a predator waiting for the right moment to pounce.
The string of profanities Javi eked out behind her only underlined his panicked attempts at reloading his gun and fumbling with the ammunition. But the world had grown strangely quieter, through a screen of the deafened ringing in her ears from the many loud shots. Gun smoke stung as it filled Kim’s nostrils.
Her pistol punched another hole through the side of the bus as she took a potshot at the hungry cloud. The angry howls that followed were only a prelude to the thing grabbing and shaking the whole bus with violent force. The world nearly spun around as the bus nearly toppled over.
Two more blind shots made it stop and another hungry cloud darted across the hole in the ceiling, coiling around the bus and crisscrossing with the first one. The bus rumbled and shook, falling back into its upright position, making her stomach churn.
They had no eyes but Kim felt watched. Felt the hatred radiating from these things like heat.
A raging inferno.
The blue water of the sky began to swirl like a vortex, like a whirlpool was beginning to form in it. But she had no time to ponder it, for tendrils of the hungry cloud formed claws, prying at the hole and trying to force its way deeper inside. The maw closed in.
She took another shot that caused it to recoil, backing away and then flowing back outside. She continued pulling the trigger, but the weapon just clicked away with empty chambers.
Click, click, click, click.
Another deafening shot from Javi’s shotgun behind her maintained the numbing screen of ringing in her ears. More angry howls. The presence of the clouds disrupted the flow of air, and a violent gust of wind heralded a sudden change.
The giant forces shaking and crushing and tearing up the old tour bus let go of it. Distanced themselves.
Even at a growing range, Kim could feel the flaming despise emanating from these unnatural entities. Although they possessed no facial features, she sensed one of them catching a glimpse of her as something distantly resembling a head flowed past the hole in the ceiling, joining the other cloud-dragons.
Even as the distance between the bus and the hungry clouds grew, the adrenaline still pumped. Kim’s heart continued pounding like a drum, underscored by that painful ringing in her ears. She continued to point her empty gun at the intangible things while the unspeakable entities backed farther and farther away from the bus, melting into wisps of other clouds adrift in the rippling skies.
Where they recovered. Re-channeled. Readied themselves for their next assault.
With a trembling hand, she pawed around in her other jacket pocket for spare bullets but found none.
“You got what you came for?” Javi asked. His voice quaked.
They had both ducked down and cowered, glued to the old demolished furnishings inside the bus. Things that offered comfort in the illusion of providing cover, but provided none against entities that moved like mist and possessed the power of giants.
“No,” Kim breathed.
“Then fuckin’ get it. They might be coming back,” he said.
She glared at him.
He grimaced and said, “Sorry.”
Staying low and moving while staying crouched, she sidled along the length of the corridor into the back of the bus. Javi stayed behind, keeping his gun trained on one of the gaping holes that the fog-things had ripped open in the chassis of this steel carcass.
Kim paused when something metal clanked. A shard of scrap metal had fallen down and Javi’s gaze met hers. He shook his head and she turned, continuing on.
The pounding of that drum that was the heart of fury and adrenaline, it calmed. Slowly. Although it felt longer than it was, a minute had passed since the retreat of the roiling cloud-monsters.
She dared to stand up straight and look around in the room with the ratty bunk beds. For a moment, she expected to see Michael sitting there. But all she saw was her own shadow, her silhouette cast into a humanoid shape where she had seen him sitting last. A reminder of the demon that had taken him—taken him over, ascended as the Glass King. A wide smile, too wide to look natural, baring bright white, clean teeth. Underlining a set of piercing steel blue eyes, and that flash of silver in them.
That evil. That ambition.
None of it here, now. Nobody was here. Nobody but Javi waiting near the exit, and nobody else but Kim.
She turned and her eyes came to rest on the small black safe set into the wall. Still intact.
The door of the safe stood open. First and foremost, dust and grit filled its insides. That, and a small mirror standing at the back wall, inside the safe.
Kim stared at herself, lost in the sinuous vision. Not vanity enthralled her, but fascination over every curve of her own face, so unexpected and yet so true to what she had imagined. So right.
So her.
Most of all, she felt content. So content that everything was a million miles away. The memories of demons and Michael, the cloud creatures, the weight of the revolver in her hand, the perils of the House of Change, the oblivion that swallowed people whole in the otherworlds, the laws of magick, the constant paradox, the dreams that blended with reality, even Javi—they all faded away. Peeled back like layers of reality unfurling like flower petals, like a rose blossoming and blooming in a time lapse.
All that remained—all that remained was this mirror.
She reached inside the safe and took it. First, Kevin had seen it here, mystified by its meaning and terrified by what it might represent. Michael had left it here, to see through it from beyond any veil, and to control his potential thrall. Now, Kim took it. She would make it her own.
Held up close, she looked into her own eyes, the rest of her appearance and this bright otherworld around her all cropped out by the angle.
Infinity churned in those black holes, framed by vibrant colors, scintillating with fire and metal in the color of her irises. Life, vibrant, and yearning.
Her fingers curled around the small reflective object as she closed her eyes and breathed. The adrenaline, the rushing of blood in her ears all distant and subdued.
Content, finally.
Kim shoved the mirror into her jacket’s pocket and left.
Nervousness still marked Javi’s face when he looked up at her from his hiding spot. His brow shot up into a high arch of confusion. Kim knew how serene she must have looked now, felt the thrum of this powerful calm from the core of her body and emanating outwards like a bright aura.
“Done. Let’s go,” she breathed at him.
He stumbled a bit as he got to his feet and took the lead. Paused at the bottom of the stairs leaving the old tour bus, pointing his gun from one side to the other and then poking it outside. The fright of the cloud-creatures still haunted him and showed itself in his every abrupt motion, but Kim followed behind him in a trance of almost unnatural tranquil.
With nothing in sight, he began making his hasty return to the sports car outside, kicking up dust as he jogged up to it.
Kim followed and only now registered the heavy pull of the emptied gun in her hand. She stared at it and remembered all the times she had used it in the past, savoring the idea of tossing it. Then she changed her mind and shoved it into the other pocket of her leather jacket.
Javi swung his weight to plop back down into the driver’s seat, causing the small lithe vehicle to bounce a few inches under the sudden impact of his weight.
Kim clicked her tongue and smiled through her speaking, “Let me.”
Javi peeled his eyes off the sky where the cloud monsters dwelt. Stared at her in disbelief, realizing how she had stopped paying attention to those potential threats. Kim took twice the time to walk towards the car, not speeding up her pace at all.
He shook his head and climbed back out of the driver’s seat. Tossed the keys to her which she caught with precision that surprised even herself. They took their seats in the car, slammed the doors shut, and within seconds, the engine’s motor roared back to life.
Wheels kicked up dirt as the Dodge spun on the spot and circled around, then sped off towards the cracked and pothole-riddle strip of forgotten asphalt. Metal screeched and sparks flew as the vehicle scraped over tarred grounds and found proper traction on the broken road.
All the while, Javi kept rubbernecking around, peering out of the windows to see if he could spot the things nearing. Kim just kept her focus on the road in front of them. Unconcerned of what lurked in the bright sunless sky.
A gust of wind carried a tempest of sand, engulfing the car. When it passed, the Dodge was driving down a different road. It looked almost the same, but it was more intact than the otherworld’s imitation of one.
This was the natural world they came from.
The sun set to their right. A yellow fireball in the sky, scorching hot and a reminder of them having returned to our world. Or what our world had become.
The car thundered past a weathered sign by the roadside.

“Any ideas why the ritual ward didn’t work? Was it those things?” Javi asked after a long bout of silence and a subsequent deep sigh that conveyed a sense of relief.
After all, those cloud-beasts could only exist in that otherworld, or by taking possession of a body from our world.
“Got a hunch,” she replied. Nothing else. That calm drowned out the desire to over-explain.
She could feel his gaze resting on her but she did not meet it, keeping her eyes on the road still. Only shooting a glance at the speedometer. Needle climbing, going fast. The hum and vibration of the vehicle felt good and she savored the pressure of the sheer velocity.
Without looking at him, she could sense the gears churning behind his forehead.
“Got a feeling that all of the old magick doesn’t work anymore. I remember reading some old book. Like, all the old spells from the late medieval period? This one monk said they stopped working at some point. A later occultist wrote some babble about magick only working because you believe in it despite the paradox of it not existing, evidenced by all the old rituals that never worked. But I think that guy had no clue.”
Javi scratched the stubble on his chin, sounding like sandpaper on wood.
“And you think that’s what happened in the House o’ Change? Because o’ what you did in there?” he asked, the pitch of his voice rising with each question. “Does that mean you're—”
“Yes,” she said, interrupting him.
Smiled.
“What if someone else makes it to the Heart of the House? If they birth the next world, does that mean you—”
“No,” she said. The smile solidified on her face, yet softened. Like molten steel. “Nobody can change me—nobody change my metal soul. Nobody.”
Her words trailed off with her thoughts. The road to Vegas would be long and something sinister still awaited them there: the Glass King and his flock.
Kim swallowed the lump in her throat, pushing that thought back down. She felt something more powerful that trumped it.
Hope.
Then she added, “I will now always be me, no matter what becomes of this world, or the next, or any that follow.”
Silence draped itself over them again, filled only with the constant sounds of the engine and the tires rolling down the road at high speed.
Kim removed her hand from the stick and held it out to Javi. An open, empty palm. Yet, invisible to the naked eye, she held her heart out on display for him.
He looked into the hollow of her palm, then let his gaze wander up the length of her arm till their eyes met again. Just before she could feel uncomfortable about it, he seized her hand.
She smiled again.
Squeezed.

PORTABLE PET CRIBS MAKE A HOME FOR STRAY CATS ON THE COLD STREETS OF COLUMBIA
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Visiting a destitute of stray animal on the streets, shivering within the December cold, hungry and thirsty, always breaks me. I attempt to complete my part, however, a community effort is required to take care of these little creatures. In Columbia, the amount of stray cats has elevated tremendously through the years. However, the possible lack of awareness regarding animal being homeless has brought to hardly any public support of these lonesome creatures. So, national petshop chain Molly’s Store collaborated to create these portable pet cribs. https://vimeo.com/301787375 They collected padded winter clothing and upcycled them into portable cat shelters! Inspired through the dome-like form of igloos, the small hooded dome homes happen to be outfitted having a roof, a bed, bowls for water and food, plus an extra waterproof cover. Customers found Molly’s Store to under your own accord buy food for that stray cats, plus they were given the Hood Houses! 2000 Hood Houses were produced and distributed. The shoppers then spread the homes throughout Seoul, establishing comfy cribs for that cats throughout the cold winter months. The portable pet crib is fairly simple to setup. You open this area and take away all of the components needed to put it together. You fit the round frame which comes along to the base box. Insert the cushion in to the round frame, and take out the interior cover. Fix the hood to the inner cover, and fix it towards the frame. Then put the waterproof tent-like cover within the Hood House, and fix it towards the home’s corners. Fill the bowls with water and food, and let a cat seek shelter there in peace! Initiatives such as these are game-changers and can produce a huge improvement in the lives in our furry buddies. I can’t watch for Hood House to locate its method to countries around the globe! portable crib folding portable crib puppy crib mobile portable crib for toddler travel crib dog baby mobile portable crib amazon dog cribs Read the full article

World Building: Temporal Fusion Punk (?)
Note: This world is still in the planning stages, so things could change as I do research and seek input from others.
This catalyst to this world is mass teleportation. Two well known series make use of this trope:  the Nantucket series by SM Stirling, and the Ring of Fire series by Eric Flint.
This one is slightly more complex. Tentatively, I’m looking at an island of Washington state in 2007 (where Avenged Sevenfold are) and a restaurant from said island in 1957 (where Jimmy Reed and Eddie Taylor are) get catapulted back in time to Europe in 1507. I’ll have to do some research, and see what major events were occurring in 1507. In addition, there are also some Atlanteans from the distant past that have also been displaced in 1507.
To avoid awkward issues of a restaurant (and Jimmy Reed and Eddie Taylor) suddenly disappearing from 1957, or an island (and Avenged Sevenfold) suddenly disappearing from 2007 - the restaurant and island simply get *duplicated* from 1957 and 2007 to 1507. Nonetheless, there is bound to be some heavy angsting going on in 1507 - as quite a few families and couples have been temporally separated permanently. While Jimmy Reed might be relieved to learn that his six younger children were *not* effectively orphaned in 1957 - he, nonetheless, misses having his younger children with him.
In 1957, Jimmy Reed is having lunch at a restaurant with his wife - along with his two eldest children (Jimmy Jr and Loretta) and Eddie Taylor. Seated next to the Reed family is Zachary “Buzz” Giaccio (the granduncle of Zacky Vengeance) and his wife, Sylvia. The restaurant is full - and there are twelve people (including two who had just walked in) queued to be served at the moment the temporal displacement occurs. The restaurant suddenly gets some strangely attired customers, including a group of five people with multiple tattoos and piercings (Avenged Sevenfold), from 2007. Initially, all the customers and employees from that restaurant think that they somehow landed in the *future* - but they soon learn that they’re actually in the *past*, but are surrounded by an enclave of folks from 2007.
In 2007, Avenged Sevenfold are all booked to perform on the island - and all of the girlfriends, except for Gena, are also present. Loretta Reed Sullivan (Jimmy Reed’s daughter) also lives on that island with her youngest daughter, April. Loretta’s sister, Rose, is also visiting - along with April’s eldest sibling Annie... and Annie’s daughter, Melody. Loretta and Rose end up being temporally separated from their husbands and the rest of their children. Rose and Loretta are happy to find a young version of their father, though. This thereby results in *two* versions of Loretta in 1507: the ten year old version of her from 1957, and the 60 year old version of her from 2007.
Later that night, Sylvia (from 1957) gives birth to a daughter who she names Zelda - while Annie (from 2007) gives birth to a daughter who she names Harmony.
The members of Avenged Sevenfold (some of who are Jimmy Reed fans themselves) quickly bond with Jimmy Reed. Jimmy smiles when M Shadows comments that he is “Jimmy Reed the blues singer”, but then looks confused when M Shads concludes with “of Big Boss Man fame”. M Shads then realizes that Jimmy must not have yet recorded Big Boss Man - and he suggests High and Lonesome, following it by singing the chorus. Jimmy then smiles and says that that *is* indeed him.
The next day, Jimmy Reed heads to the library with the Avenged Sevenfold members - as they look through newspapers from 1957. They find a review of Jimmy Reed’s concert, which gives no indication of a temporal event or the presence of Avenged Sevenfold. They then find an article from about a month later stating that the restaurant from 1957 would be temporarily closing for interior renovations, and that it’s expected to reopen within two weeks. They later talk to the restaurant’s owner - who confirms that he did, in fact, have near future plans for a renovation. He then mentions that it’ll probably have to be called off, now - due to the temporal event.
While many of the displaced 2007 folks do still have homes they can return to, none of the customers or employees of the restaurant at the time of temporal displacement have a home they can return to - nor do many of the 2007 folks visiting from out of town, including Avenged Sevenfold and their entourage. As a results, all the hotels in town offer to provide free lodging for all the temporally displaced folks who now lack a home. After all, it’s not like 20th/21st Century US currency is gonna have any real significance in 1507.
The island city is a largely liberal community who are already making strides in utilizing renewable energy and making usage of solar power - with green roofs topping the majority of the buildings, both residential and business. As a result, it doesn’t take much effort for the community to gear back to a fusion of steampunk and solarpunk - with also some diesel punk elements.
When Jimmy Reed and Zacky Vengeance visit the island that the Atlanteans have been teleported to - someone called Lulu smiles at Jimmy, as they place a crystal in Jimmy’s hand and wraps his fingers around it. Jimmy is just about to say “thank you”. However, Jimmy immediately has past life recalls of himself being an Atlantean called Jojo - and he then, in Atlantean, starts talking to Lulu about how nice it is to see them, again. As long as Jimmy is holding the crystal, he is able to speak and understand Atlantean - but temporarily loses the ability to speak and understand English. Jimmy, effectively, undergoes a state of split bilingualism. Jimmy places the crystal in Zacky’s hand - but the crystal, however, has no effect on Zacky. Jimmy struggles a bit to translate between the Atlanteans (who can only speak Atlantean) and Zacky (who can only speak English). Within about a month, though, Jimmy no longer needs the crystal to understand or speak Atlantean - and he can now code switch easily between English and Atlantean.
Jimmy and Mary also, at some point, end up adopting two down-timer orphans. Zacky also begins dating a down-timer named Hannah - who seems to be a fusion of Gena (his up-time girlfriend) and Meaghan (his close friend from Canada up-time). While Jimmy is frequently grieved to not have his younger six children with him, he does take comfort and reassurance in knowing that his up-town counterpart is still present in their lives.
The Avenged Sevenfold members help Jimmy Reed to find treatment for his epilepsy and alcoholism, and the Avenged Sevenfold members themselves decide to seek treatment for their own addictions - particularly after Jimmy mentioned having a vision of The Rev’s death within three years.
