Thamesmead, London’s New Town with its numerous lakes, acres of open spaces, nature reserves, meandering riverbanks and 30,000 trees, Thamesmead is a haven for nature lovers. Kingfishers, partridges, hares, cuckoos and even seals, have all been spotted here. The area has a fascinating history. Home to the first pioneering New Town of the 1960s and part of the vast Royal Arsenal complex that armed Britain through two world wars. Thamesmead is rich in arts and creativity, with a year-round programme of performance art, theatre and cultural events. All of which is about to grow thanks to a £1billion transformation project spearheaded by Peabody, London’s oldest housing association.

The River Thames has always played an important part in Woolwich life. In the past, goods and services have benne landed at Woolwich for the Royal Arsenal in particular. Raw materials and explosives came ashore from relieved ship’s captains, while more benign cargoes could be disembarked at less hazardous docks and jetties. Nowadays a regular passenger service with MBNA Thames Clippers takes passengers up the river to Greenwich, Canary Wharf, Tower, Embankment and Westminster piers for work and pleasure. The Woolwich Ferry also takes passengers and vehicles back and forth across the river, as it has for nearly 130 years. The river, as a route for commuters and tourists has grown increasingly influential over the past few years and is likely to become even more integral as the development of the Woolwich Cultural district and Royal Arsenal Riverside progresses.

Foxglove Path is 30 minutes drive from London City Airport and located a few minutes walk from River Thames. The path is a part of a big park named Gallions Park, which has some hill, a lovely canal next to our building, a big lake with wild birds and many of the young built family homes. We are a short walk from a Tesco Express, where you can find also a general practice of doctors, a takeaway pizzeria and a traditional English pub. If you take a lovely walk, 30 minutes on Thames Path (highly recommended) or take a bus on end of the street for 10 minutes, you can get into the nearest city center, which is called Central Woolwich, Woolwich Arsenal. You’ll find there lovely restaurants, pubs, snack bars, bigger and smaller groceries, bank, gym, markets... etc. See more information on restaurants and shops elsewhere in this guide.
