“Your True Love,” live during Blue Suede Shoes: A Rockabilly Session, 1985.
“Carl is such a sweet fellow, he’s such a lovely man, and obviously he influenced me a great deal when I was young. I was so into his music - well, I still am. I just got all his old Sun Records originals on a CD now. [chuckles] And they still sound great.” - George Harrison, RTE, October 1987 “[Carl] was a big influence on me as a kid. I met him, of all places, in Alma Cogan’s flat in Kensington, years ago, and he was so nice. He sent me this special video of a little hot rod coming down the road with ‘Matchbox’ playing in the background, and then he pulled up, got out of the car, and said, ‘Hey George Harrison! Hi, Carl Perkins here. I’m going to do a TV special and I want you to be on it. In fact, it won’t *be* a special unless you’re on it!’ Then I never heard any more for about six or nine months and then Dave Edmunds got involved and it came together suddenly, that autumn of ‘85. We did it like Carl Aid! I thought, if I want to get over my fear, my inhibitions about going on and playing or whatever, if I can’t play Carl Perkins songs there’s not much chance of me playing anything!” - George Harrison, Q, 1988 “Prior to the show, Harrison gave a dinner for some of the entertainers at his Victorian mansion outside London. ‘He just opened the door himself in jeans, a sweater and his slippers,’ recalls [Rosanne] Cash. ‘He was very sweet. He has a genuine personality that just wants things to be good.’” - People, March 24, 1986

can you tell me everything you know about rova (jonah's old band), please??
(MY ANSWER GOT LOST BECAUSE THE TUMBLR IS TUMBLR AND I HAD TO WRITE IT ONCE AGAIN 😭)
hi anon-poppy 🩷 thank you for sending this 🩷
you want to know more about rova the band? ok, so let’s back to early 2010s, the prime time of tumblr dot com (ekhm…), the beginning of instagram and the rule of influencers and, also the glory days of soundcloud and its little indie artists. i want to stick a bit to the latter ones cause that’s the core part of your question. Rova the band, consisted of members Jonah Hauer-King, Rufus Gibbs, Tom Gould and Fergus Burnand, was one of many rock alternative/indie bands who were inspired/amazed by arctic monkeys, bombay bicycle club, suede, radiohead or jeff buckley, BUT! it has one distinguish feature other than others! Tall, skinny, curly-haired boy with bright eyes and adorable dimples who happened to be also the singer and the front man of the group! They not only played covers (another prominent mark of 2010s and start of many careers on youtube channels!) but also their own songs! They even released EP Strings in October 2012, which is still available to listen for free on soundcloud, and consists of tracks: Measured Motion (my personal faveee!), Mama Save Me, and album titled song - Strings. The band was named after the Turkish poet, and also frontman’s first soft toy, as they reported in the interview. (awwwww, Jonaaaaah! 😂☺️ mkay mkaaay back to my essay!) They played many gigs around North London and also Paris in 2011-2012, many videos of them performing are available on youtube, which I highly recommend to watch. Unfortunately, for reasons unknown, at least for me, the band didn’t last long. After all, Jonah pursued the dream of being an actor, which he successfully achieved! ✨ And, as we know, his music talent did not go to waste as he used it in The Little Mermaid, Postcards from London, RENT the musical (RIP ME, forever haunted by this, please someone send me the footage and end my suffering!!!!), World on Fire (a little bit but still?), or even the mockery of singing in Old Boys (Winch, you will be famous forever!) Once again, I highly recommend to check their songs, and leave you with my favourite one!
Measured Motion acoustic session 🎶🌿

Thank you for the ask and I’m always at your service! 🫡☺️🩷

London-は
The absurd weirdness not just of seeing Buck-Tick in London, on streets I know, walking past Victorian row-houses like the one I live in...
youtube
And specifically in "Kirubahn" (as Atsushi calls it, and I'm not even taking the piss - that is literally how it’s transcribed - he’s just being adorable in translation, anyway, he's reading Melody Maker in this so clearly his English is 1000x better than my Japanese as I can barely read the title of Japanese music mags)
But in MASTER ROCK STUDIOS where I have seen so many video clips of Suede on the brink of breaking up / jettisoning their guitarist out the door down the alley at the start of the clip.
Yet here's Imai just casually smoking in the control room where Bernard Butler would later lose his mind...
There's a better quality clip of Atsushi's interview here but unfortunately the others' interviews seem lost to the static:

welcome to my music playlist series:
b-side beats
i love making playlists so if you want one, dm me 3-5 bands / artists / songs you love & i can make something happen :)
vol 2. is inspired by body piercer!matty from the wonderful mind of @sugar-coat-it. thought it would be fun to create a list for everyones favourite mohawked boy since he's taken over my mind. this one is more on the loud & messy side of things but i hope you enjoy. 🖤
-----
"another the letter" by wire there is no possible way he wouldn't be into wire, right? a classic for the ages.
"death of a party" by blur the aura of this one just fits. moody but vibey. you know he was in this crowd having the time of his life. and that guitar at 0:53 is one of my favourite things in this world. i'd like to think that a young body piercer!matty actually did meet graham and he lost his shit when it happened because how could you not when you are besides one of your musical heroes.
"structureless design" by preoccupations heavy bauhaus feel and influence to this one which i think he would appreciate. the recording is rather quiet, so you'll have to turn it up a bit.
"looking down the barrel of a gun" by beastie boys i believe this would be the perfect track to play while he's at work. the whole album, really.
"she's not dead" by suede (aka the london suede in north america) we know this matty has a softer side so this one digs into that. a beautifully tragic song from suede's debut. you also have the accompanying b-side from that era "he's dead" <- this video is a must watch for everyone because the performance is mesmerizing.
bonus track: "pure morning" by placebo not much to say about this one other than i think when he showed it to girlie she was floored and couldn't get enough of placebo. this matty might've also taken fashion queues from a young brian molko.
-----
this is me just fangirling about @sugar-coat-it's amazing work. thank you so much for everything, belle. you're a force in this community and we're so grateful to have you <3

Careless Whisper
Written By: Andrew Ridgeley & George Michael
Artist: George Michael/Wham!
Released: 1984
Although officially released by Wham!, this was George Michael’s first breakaway single. The song explores the guilt felt by George after he cheats on a partner, and his inability to “dance” with them in the same way after this betrayal. Despite the song’s ubiquity in pop culture since its arrival on the scene in 1985, George Michael has confessed to having no particular connection to the situation this song portrays. He wrote the song to pass the time on a bus, when he was just seventeen. In his 1991 memoir, Bare, Michael admits he regrets that it “was not an integral part of my emotional development… It disappoints me that you can write a lyric very flippantly—and not a particularly good lyric—and it can mean so much to so many people. That’s disillusioning for a writer.” Later in an interview with People magazine, he made similar remarks about the song. “I’m fed up with ‘Careless Whisper.’ I don’t know why it made such an impression. Is it that so many people have cheated? I have no idea. But it’s ironic that I wrote it when I was 17 and didn’t know much about anything. Certainly nothing much about relationships.”
[Intro] Time can never mend The careless whispers Of a good friend To the heart and mind Ignorance is kind There's no comfort in the truth Pain is all you'll find Should've known better, yeah [Instrumental] [Verse 1] I feel so unsure As I take your hand And lead you to the dance floor As the music dies Something in your eyes Calls to mind a silver screen And all its sad goodbyes [Chorus] I'm never gonna dance again Guilty feet have got no rhythm Though it's easy to pretend I know you're not a fool Should've known better than to cheat a friend And waste a chance that I've been given So I'm never gonna dance again The way I danced with you, oh [Verse 2] Time can never mend The careless whispers Of a good friend To the heart and mind Ignorance is kind There's no comfort in the truth Pain is all you'll find [Chorus] I'm never gonna dance again Guilty feet have got no rhythm Though it's easy to pretend I know you're not a fool Should've known better than to cheat a friend (Should've known better, yeah) And waste a chance that I've been given So I'm never gonna dance again The way I danced with you, oh [Post-Chorus] Never without your love [Bridge] Tonight, the music seems so loud I wish that we could lose this crowd Maybe it's better this way We'd hurt each other with the things we want to say We could have been so good together We could have lived this dance forever But now who's gonna dance with me? Please stay [Chorus] And I'm never gonna dance again Guilty feet have got no rhythm Though it's easy to pretend I know you're not a fool Should've known better than to cheat a friend And waste a chance that I've been given So I'm never gonna dance again The way I danced with you, oh [Outro] (Now that you're gone) Now that you're gone (Now that you're gone) Was what I did so wrong, so wrong That you had to leave me alone?

Dreams
Written By: Noel Hogan & Dolores O'Riordan
Artist: The Cranberries
Released: 1992
“Dreams” was the first single released by The Cranberries after being signed to Island Records. However, the band’s video for “Linger” was picked up by MTV in 1994 while they toured with London Suede and that song reached the top 40 in five countries. So, “Dreams” was then reissued and found chart success. The song was written about “feeling really in love for the first time”.
[Refrain] Oh, my life Is changing every day In every possible way And oh, my dreams It's never quite as it seems Never quite as it seems [Chorus 1] I know I've felt like this before But now I'm feeling it even more Because it came from you Then I open up and see The person falling here is me A different way to be [Bridge] Ah La ya La la ya La-ah-ah [Verse] I want more Impossible to ignore Impossible to ignore They'll come true Impossible not to do Impossible not to do [Chorus 2] And now I tell you openly You have my heart so don't hurt me You're what I couldn't find A totally amazing mind So understanding and so kind You're everything to me [Refrain] Oh, my life Is changing every day In every possible way And oh, my dreams It's never quite as it seems 'Cause you're a dream to me, dream to me [Outro] Ah, la-a-la-ah, la la la La-a-la-ah, la-ah ah ah Ah, la-a-la-ah, la la la La-a-la-ah, la-ah ah ah

The History of Streetwear in Pop Culture
Hey everyone, it's Adriana.
Welcome back to this week's topic on streetwear in pop culture. Let's talk about how the upbringing of streetwear in the 90’s and how it’s grown into different styles meshed together to normalized clothing worn in streets. We might have seen celebrities start making streetwear trendy in appearances on the red carpet, movies, and music videos. Let's take it back and share some of our favorite moments in pop culture.
New York hip-hop fashion
Aaliyah was a R&B singer from Brooklyn, New York. She was well known for having a “tomboy” unisex look that made it acceptable to all in the 90s hip hop era of dance and music. She would be seen hanging around artists like TLC, Tupac, & others in what we would identify now as streetwear. Simply wearing casual everyday clothing but with a twist.
Here is a favorite look of Aaliyah in a bandana, oversized varsity jacket and sporty pants with a belt and a long bedazzled chain.
Source:https://www.fanpop.com/clubs/aaliyah/images/18423472/title/aaliyah-various-pics-photo
Chicano streetwear
Mi Vida Loca (1993) is a drama indie film that portrayed young Hispanic women viewing their lives as gang members in Echo Park, Los Angeles. These women were everyday fighters in the streets of LA watching each other's backs. In the film, you can view what streetstyle was meant for cholas. These women wore baggy or tight clothing, Nike Cortez shoes, high ankle socks, and big hoop earrings. This style became the norm within hispanic culture, since the film showed the culture of the beauty standards in chola women.

Punk streetwear
Freaky Friday (2003)
A fantasy-comedy film, a childhood favorite. One of my favorite outfits is Lindsay Lohan and her pairing of cargo pants (classic) with a slightly cropped graphic tank, and of course, a choker.
Source: https://www.pinterest.com/isaacmaldonado2/freaky-friday/
Thirteen (2003)
A film about a thirteen-year-old girl's relationship with her mother is put to the test as she discovers drugs, sex, and petty crime in the company of her cool but troubled best friend. Because of the film's low budget, the girls' clothes are mostly from their own wardrobe. Catherine Hardwick noted that as filming progressed, the girls began to dress similarly without being told to. This film created the idea of young good girls heading toward the direction of rebellion. The punk rock look played a part of the early 2000's. We love to see it now with brands like IAMGIA, Motel Rocks, and Forever 21, bringing back the low rise jeans, suede lace-up vests and body jewelry.

European streetwear
Kate Moss, model, is the queen of being versatile in her outfit choices. She can go from grunge to girly, to urban street style. Moss has had some iconic looks over the years. This time paparazzi spotted her in a casual vest, a tie, and chino shorts, with a hobo bag, strolling in London.
Source: https://graziadaily.co.uk/fashion/news/kate-moss-fashion/
Japanese streetwear
FRUiTS magazine (1997) was a monthly Japanese street fashion magazine created by photographer Shoichi Aoki. Though FRUiTS magazine it covered styles found throughout Tokyo. Aoki captured cool people rocking the Harajuku style and found them to be most fashionable with the expressiveness shown walking in look worthy clothing. We enjoy the double layered graphic crewneck sweater. The plaid midi skirt with a pin, with a large Moschino tote bag ready to take on the day.

Californian Surf
Baywatch (1989)
Pamela Anderson, she made wearing beach wear look so easy and effortless. Pamela turned beach wear swimsuit "cover up" the normal everyday wear. Typically, her look consisted of sexy and comfortable. Here she's seen wearing denim on denim. A cute button down oversized denim shirt tied to be cropped and cinched to the waist. The iconic Levis 501 shorts with a cheeky slit near the pocket, and beaded shell jewelry. What a look!

School wear in LA
90210 (1990)
Brenda Walsh, Donna Martin, and Kelly Taylor were fashion icons in the TV series of a group of friends living in Beverly Hills, California as they all transition from high school to college and into the adult world. They always went shopping for clothes that they can afford and put together. During this time, fashion was very experimental while being classic especially as preppy as kids were in the hills. Most girls in the show, wore big t-shirts to school with overalls, blazers with skirts, long button down dresses. Big 90's hairstyles with fringe bangs and attempt to stay on trend.
Source- https://www.pinterest.com/pin/340725528061378169
Skateboarding Youth Culture
Young adults and teens in the 90s featured in magazines like Alloy. Outfits featured in skate magazines redefined the aesthetic in streetwear. They were made for comfort while riding a skateboard in the streets, while also staying on trend. We got muscle tanks, UFO (parachute pants) Tight fitted graphic t-shirts, and chunky sneakers. This style is still being represented and recreated by women to this day even if they don't skate, it's still gives off I am probably wearing my boyfriends clothing core.
Source: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/516647388513788627/
Sportswear Princess
Princess Diana (left) became a muse in comfort casual clothing/ sporty chic style in the 90s. This photo is a side by side of two influential figures in pop culture making paparazzi catch photos of them wearing a similar outfit out in public and making it streetstyle. Hailey Bieber (right) making athleisure wear into the street. This kind of an outfit would be considered sporty, although you might just like the look of throwing on an oversized jumper, with some fun sneakers for a quick coffee run or errands.
Source: https://www.vogue.com/vogueworld/article/hailey-bieber-princess-diana-athleisure-style
Performance wear
Jennifer Lopez (2000) also known as JLO performance is always iconic for wearing avant garde looks when out in public. She has a mix of various looks while performing. This look started a trend in what women aspire to look and dress like. As we see many YouTube or TikTok tutorials on "stealing her style" recreating her throwback looks. Here's an iconic one we could see being brought back. Bronx baby tee, waist chain belt, parachute pants.
Source-https://www.vogue.com/article/jennifer-lopez-best-performance-costumes-concert-looks
Charli XCX (2016). Performing in Berlin, Germany. We see more of an urban mix of style being introduced by celebrities on stage. Performers have toned it down for on stage presence and more for comfort while still showing style. Charli is from the United Kingdom and her biggest fashion influences are sporty chic, and tumblr girls from 2014 of #seapunk, #pale goth, and #y2k aesthetic.

"Beautiful Ones" is a song by English rock band Suede, released as the second single from their third album, Coming Up (1996), on 14 October 1996 through Nude Records.
The song became a top-10 hit in the United Kingdom, peaking at number eight, and reached number one in Iceland for two weeks.
Featuring one of new guitarist Richard Oakes' first guitar riffs, "Beautiful Ones" became one of Suede's more popular singles.
The song was originally titled "Dead Leg" after bassist Mat Osman jokingly threatened to give Oakes a dead leg if he was unable to write a top ten single.
The song charted at number eight on the UK Singles Chart in October 1996, in an era when the top 10 consisted of an eclectic mix of pop, indie and dance music.
Larry Flick from Billboard wrote, "Like a fast-mangled Oasis song, The London Suede succeeded in making sounds of pop/rock that are definitely unique. The painfully true lyrics and vibrant sounds have already proved to be a hit in the U.K."
Kevin Courtney from The Irish Times commented, "The Suede resurrection continues apace with this second single from the band's brilliant Coming Up album […] Richard Oakes's crispy guitar intro sets the sordid scene, and Brett takes up the trashy torch with bum slapping gusto. As immediate and invigorating as, well, a good sniff of premium unleaded."
Music writer James Masterton said in his weekly UK chart commentary, that the band’s follow up to "Trash" "hits similar heights with a rather fine catchy melody that is by no means instant but gradually works its way into your consciousness with repeated listens."
A reviewer from Music Week gave it four out of five, adding that "the familiar strains of Brett Anderson ride over this strong single".
In 2014, Paste listed the song at number 34 in its list of "The 50 Best Britpop Songs".
Michael Danaher wrote: "The song is both simple and sophisticated, and it's a true Britpop gem that deserves much attention."
In a Clash retrospective feature on Coming Up, Ricky Jones called the single "a jangly pop masterpiece with one of the most melancholic sing-a-long choruses Britpop would ever produce."
The music video for the song was directed by Pedro Romhanyi, who had previously made the video for the band's third single, "Animal Nitrate" in early 1993.
The video features the band shot in black and white performing the song, intercut with quick edits of conceptual segments illustrating the song's lyrics in a literal fashion.

Hi! Using this place more because every other site is just depressing so I feel like I should introduce myself:
I'm Maddy but you can call me Cam, after my URL, if you want.
I'm a non-fiction writer and the admin and sole author over at @suedesongs and my Substack: The Extravagant Introvert where I write about anything that takes my fancy, but I'd sooner keep this Tumblr a little more secret. I just can't help but plug my more serious work.
I've been here about 13 years on various blogs and in various fandoms: classic rock, *gag* superwholock, goth Tumblr. I once ran a Bauhaus meme page when I was at sixth form.
I'm 24 and a Sagittarius.
I love animals especially cats!! One of my tattoos is a bow and arrow with my cat sitting on it looking at the moon and it's right next to my heart.
She/Her pronouns
My blog is often NSFW and may include gore, horror and BDSM imagery, and I may make mention of drugs and alcohol sometimes. Basically aspects of my interests and life I can't talk about anywhere else. I'd politely request you don't follow me unless you're over 18.
I love 60s/70s vibes and boho witchy aesthetics.
I love music, especially Suede (seen them 20 times and met my best friends through them) but I'm honestly one of those annoying people who likes everything.
I'm happy for you to save my gig photos and would love if you reblogged them but please do not repost them to your own page, especially outside of Tumblr.
I used to be a huge Brett girl but then I met Neil and chatted to him and now he fully has my heart ❤️
I think I was a hip London it girl in a past life. Not in a Mary Quant Twiggy kind of way but in a bohemian Marianne Faithfull kind of way.
I'm a vegan of 5 years, vegetarian of 12, and a massive foodie, Indian and Korean food are my favourites 🥰
My favourite things are long nights dancing with my mates, pints of real ale, getting lost in a video game, walking barefoot in the grass, and long train journeys.
I mostly post about Suede and music and pretty stuff but at the moment I'm also dead into Stardew Valley and AMC Interview With The Vampire.
My URL is taken from the name of Elliott's romance novel in Stardew Valley. He's my husband in the game. I'm not really a big romance fan irl, I prefer non-fiction or literary fiction but it's the closest option lol.
Let's be pals ✨

welcome to my music playlist series:
b-side beats
i love making playlists so if you want one, dm me 3-5 bands / artists / songs you love & i can make something happen :)
vol 5. is for the lovely cass, aka @mystic-sands 🖤 i really loved the upbeat vibes of the tracks / bands you sent over so this one has more of a fun, dancey feel to it. hope you enjoy!
-----
“la vita nuova” by christine and the queens (ft. caroline polachek) when i say this ep carried me through 2020, i really mean it. my boyfriend played the record and i literally had to stop work to listen to the whole thing because i was so mesmerized by the grooviness of it. this track is my favourite from it and the video is phenomenal (always here for a good dance vid, haha).
“chaeri” by magdalena bay this makes me think a lot of nasty cherry with a heavy injection of hyperpop. i also just realized that the name of the track and the inspo go hand in hand. a total coincidence, i swear!
“my insatiable one” by suede (aka the london suede in north america) for the pulp loving self in you. suede taps into that feminine, sexy vibe that jarvis and pulp do (maybe even more so in some instances). and tbh, this live performance of the song is one of my favourite things in this earth. brett anderson is just... well, i'll let you check it out ;)
“ooh rap i ya” by george clanton this was probably my second top album of last year. such good 90's electropop vibes that feel like a weighted blanket. highly recommend checking the whole lp if you're into this track.
“her” by megan thee stallion not much to say about this track other than it is amazing in the best way possible. the beat is just infectious and i love meg so damn much.
bonus track: “all i want” by lcd soundsystem i cannot help myself but add an lcd song each time the 1975 is mentioned as inspo for a playlist. it's widely known that matty is a big fan and you can hear such heavy inspo from james murphy and co. in '75 work.
-----
@mystic-sands, hope you like some of the tracks in here. thank you for asking me to curate a playlist; always a pleasure to do so :)

orchid, mahonia, chia, edelweiss, papyrus? :0
HI BESTIEEEE sorry this took all day i was at work and then tumblr didn’t save any of my very long reply that i’d already made
orchid -> what's a song you consider to be perfect?
oh fuck this is tough there’s a ton. i would say right now this live version of miami 2017 by billy joel, the original studio version is pretty perfect but the power behind these live vocals is just unmatched
i would also give bonus points to 4 Leaf Clover by Ravyn Lanae, Kalopsia by Queens of the Stone Age, My Sister by Angel Olsen, and My Baby’s Taking Me Home by Sparks. bonus mention to Face to Face by Daft Punk which i don’t think is a perfect song but is one of the coolest pieces of music i’ve ever heard. there’s some great videos breaking down the samples that song uses, a couple of which haven’t even been found yet
mahonia -> what place, thing, activity inspires you most and how do you express yourself when it does?
honestly i don’t know. seeing live music helps me wanna make music but honestly i feel the most motivated to make things when they come out of just raw high emotion. like right now i’m dealing with a traumatic situation and i’m not doing super well but i also really wanna get all that shit just like out so im more motivated than ever to make something out of it. it’s a bit bleak but true, a lot of the stuff i’ve been proudest of has come out of the urge to vent outweighing the fear of not making “good” art. not to say i shouldn’t get help or i’ll lose my ability to make things i’m proud of, but i’m the most inspired when i have overwhelming emotions i feel the need to turn into something productive
chia -> what's an inside joke you have with someone else?
DRACULA CHRISTMAS DRACULA CHRISTMAS DRACULA CHRISTMAS
edelweiss -> how'd you think of your url/ username? what's it associated with to you?
someone asked me about this in a reply this morning lol, it was a dumb joke at work. we were talking about different livestock milks outside of goats and cows and thought the phrase “hog milk” was so fucking funny but that was taken so it became hogmilked which is infinitely more harrowing
papyrus -> if you put your 'on repeat' playlist on shuffle, what's the first song that comes up? what do you like about it / associate it with?
i can’t find an on repeat playlist on tidal which is what i use, but i have been coping with the aforementioned traumatic experience with two specific albums so i’ll recommend a song off that
i talk a ton about suede these days but their debut album (along with …Like Clockwork by Queens of the Stone Age) has been my comfort albums the last couple days and a good portion of what i’ve been listening to. i love the whole album but this is my favorite song off it by far. i’ve said it many times before but everyone, especially those who like 90s alt and britpop, should listen to suede’s self titled debut. perfect album imo
