Yes, I have broken a toe. This story is ridiculous so I’m making a whole-ass post about it.
About ten years ago, I had a crush on a boooooyy. His name was Jason. He had (still has) big brown puppy eyes and a soft smile and a musical voice and everything about him was just perfect for hugging. He’s nostalgia and familiarity and softness given form.
ANYWAY.
We’d meet up for dinner and a drink or two, then walk around downtown Denver and chat and window shop. (He’d look at the windows. I’d look at him. I was so far gone.) One time, I was more determined to impress him than usual. I wore a sweater dress, a pretty scarf, and stiletto heels to give me that boost to kiss height, thinking I’d plant one on him that night.
So we were walking, and every once in a while stopping in a bar for another drink (we both lived on bus lines). We had just left a bar. He was telling some story, and I was gazing at him with rapt attention instead of looking at the sidewalk.
My heel got stuck in a crack.
I fell forward. I knew I shouldn’t just catch myself with my hands, so I rolled to my side, which would have been perfect except for the fact that my toes stayed in my shoe. It hurt like a bitch!
Of course Jason fussed over me and made sure I was okay. He even offered to pay for a cab home! And of course I said I was okay, because I didn’t want the night to end, but my middle toe hurt like hell! We walked another couple miles and had another drink before we left. I kissed him on the cheek. He ruffled my hair. Blushed all the way home.
A week later, my toe was still hurting like it did the first night, so I called the doctor. She said it’s probably broken, she wasn’t going to make me deal with a copay or an x-ray, and she told me to tape my toes together and wear hard soled shoes, and keep my feet up as much as possible for the next 3-4 weeks.
Aftermath: The toe advice worked! I bought some Dansko walking clogs. They’re great for immobilizing broken toes, but they have 1″ platforms. A few months after the toe thing, I fell off the curb and then rolled my foot while wearing them, and broke a bone in my foot.
The crush on Jason didn’t work out, but as soon as I realized he had feelings for someone else, I said okay to that second date with Husband. Obviously, that turned out better than I ever could have imagined! ⋆˚⸜(♡ ॑ᗜ ॑♡)⸝ ˚⋆ Jason and I are still friends (albeit Facebook-only, because that attraction is almost as strong as my commitment to Husband) and he’s doing well.
I don’t wear heels or platforms anymore.
Think I may have broken my toe ☹ It's been hurting for a few days but over the weekend it's been getting worse and today at work I was visibly hobbling about in my boots and had to ask Matthew to bring my trainers bc they're soft enough that I can walk more on the outside of my foot bc after a while it's really too much to just force myself to walk on it. I have 3 more shifts to go and then 4 days off so I'll have to actually rest on those days which absolutely sucks bc I had an 8 week running streak which is the most consistent I think I've ever been, but I really need it to get better. Matthew has kindly bought some gauze and volunteered to tape it up for me tonight so hopefully that'll help a bit. 🤞🏻
