Movie Posters: The True Mastermind or The True Downfall?

In the past decade, the echo of complaint that there’s nothing to watch on TV has become monotonous. You may find yourself scrolling through streaming services to find a new movie or TV show to watch, rather than the ones you’ve already seen a hundred times. You want to find just one thing that catches your eye in the myriad of options, but before you know it, half an hour has gone by with no such luck. The clear answer as to why lies in the mundane poster previews for these films. However, there have been some recent outliers. For example, in 2016, Netflix released the second season of the series, Daredevil, along with several promotion posters. One of these posters depicts Frank Castle, also known as The Punisher, holding a gun in one hand and Daredevil’s mask in the other. Taking a closer look, this pose resembles the painting, David with the Head of the Goliath, created by the Italian artist, Caravaggio. This depiction of Frank makes his characteristics and motives establish a darker, but more current representation of David’s story in the Book of Samuel in the Bible.

In the Book of Samuel, David, a young Israelite, is chosen to face the Goliath, an enemy of Israel, with no armor and only brings a stick, sling, and stones. David ends up defeating Goliath and beheads it with its own sword. Frank, like David, wants justice by defeating his enemies. He arrives in Hell’s Kitchen to get revenge on groups that he believes were responsible for the deaths of his family. From the start, he demonstrates that he has a clear motive of what he wants, and he prefers to tackle his obstacles directly. However, for him, this means getting rid of criminals off the streets permanently. Unlike many Marvel characters, Frank doesn’t have any special suits, technology, or magic to meet his goals. Rather, he relies on himself and his own military training, similar to David bringing very little to defeat Goliath. Along with this, both men represent the idea of wanting to fix broken dynamics in their current setting. David wants freedom for Israel, and Frank wants to fight against the idea of living passively against injustices. In the poster, Daredevil’s mask taking the place of Goliath’s head represents the idea of defeating the injustices that Frank believes Daredevil maintains by not permanently getting rid of crime. By using these parallels, the viewer can recognize the darker tone of the show and the motives behind Frank’s character, while still being intrigued by how the story will progress.

Nowadays, this kind of imagery is not as prevalent as it used to be. Within the past year, many posters all follow the same superficial formula: the main characters standing around each other, not looking at the camera, while a blown up image draws your eyes to the center. Because this pattern has been done so many times over the years, all of the films start to blend in with each other, losing the audience’s interest. With the decrease in these new changes, it is evident, now more than ever, what once was a sophisticated representation of film has now turned into a cash grab.

I don't want to sound nasty but no on the Lukanette end game. Canon had proven Marinette treats him like a door mat. Look at Desperada, he doesn't challenge her once when Jagged shows up. He's willing to give up his happiness for her. That's not healthy for a relationship. It's meant to show unhealthy her crush on Adrien is. Marinette isn't good for Luka.

I’ve always despised the way Marinette walks over Luka and such but seeing the later episodes shows she has potential for character development and finally accepting herself. In order to do this though, Luka also needs to grow as a person and look out for himself. I know the way I see it is purely meant for fics and over analyzing the details -a habit that an ap lit/Lang student can never break even after graduating-, but I think her trying to let Adrien go was the first step and all the times Luka has gotten under her skin she’ll need to re-evaluate it. The girl is oblivious as well at times and probably doesn’t even realize her own feelings for Luka. (I.e. when she realized how serious Chat was about his affections for Ladybug and how he meant everything he said). I’m aware Lukanette won’t be endgame but with character growth and acceptance on everyone’s part, they could’ve made for a strong couple. Marinette is only like, what maybe 15? Currently. She’s got flaws and fails to see what’s right in front of her and as much as that bothers the living hell out of me, I saw that with a lot of girls in my last two years of high school and they drastically changed as time went on.

Essentially, both characters need to grow and mature. As amazing as Luka is, he needs to protect himself and such. Meaning he should keep approaching her as a friend but learn when it’ll become to much for him to handle and Marinette needs too grow up a bit. Those two years between them really show how much of a difference that makes.

Also, I think sometimes we all need to step back and realize this is a kid’s show😂 Sometimes Marinette’s actions and mistakes are meant for entertainment or secondhand embarrassment. Or they’re an attempt to serve lessons. That issue with Jagged Stone had me pissed and annoyed but it also revealed that Luka was a kind person despite the situation. And I’ve seen posts I agree with where he didn’t offer himself up to play with the man -probably in regards to his mother and how hurt she felt about their past. So there’s no telling what the true deeper meaning is behind it.

It’s just my opinion and my favorite ship in the show. I get what you’re saying but sometimes I fail to see Adrienette being more healthy than Lukanette because several factors and not because I’m biased. My hobby when I’m bored is to analyze people -if I don’t need to socialize, I don’t but I still have to attend school (YES STILL MY COUNTY IS WAITING FOR THE DISEASE TO HIT US BEFORE CLOSING INSTEAD OF TAKING PRODUCTIVE MEASURES). So I’ve watched people kinda like them. Step back and notice Adrien is the same way with putting Ladybug in front of Marinette but still unintentionally leading her on at times. Then when the time comes for him to decisively move on, he forces it and turns to Kagami who he knows has a thing for him and is more forward about it. That’s not healthy for Kagami if he’s forcing feelings but can’t act on the real stuff. Everyone has major flaws in this show. At least the fics will be good? Lol

A/N: Hiiiii. It’s been a long time y’all. Anyway so this is gonna be a series. Not sure how long yet, ig I’ll see if y’all like it lol. Also, inspired by the AMAZING @jerkbitchidjitassbutt. Ya. That’s all.

Y/n is new to Deans high school. His popular, pretty boy looks annoy Y/N, at least until she sees another side to him.

The first day of school has always been a nerve wracking ordeal. Particularly because you always started in the middle of the semester. This time, October 14th was the day, and West Valley Boarding School was the place. You step in front of your bedroom mirror, checking your outfit one last time: a pair of black leggings paired with dirty white converse high tops, and a black long sleeve with skeletons dancing on it. A perfect spooky season fit, you thought. Grabbing your backpack, you went downstairs. Your parents were already at work, so you made a cup of coffee before jumping in your car and heading to school.

The drive was quick and before you know it you were in the front office. A fifty something year old lady with badly dyed hair and glasses on the tip of her nose was showing you the school map, your schedule, and your room.

“Now we have a school tour guide to show you the ropes for the first two class hours, so you’ll be skipping your first two classes.” She yammered on and you wondered what preppy cheerleader had volunteered.

“Hey Mrs. Lawer. Where’s my touree?” A gruff voice reached your ears, and you sighed internally. Of course. A jock. You didn’t even have to look to know he would be wearing a lettermen.

“Dean, she’s right here.” She motioned to you and you turned towards the voice. Your breath caught in your throat momentarily, before you recognized that you were indeed correct. His dark blue lettermen jacket fit him perfectly, and you could see baseball patches adorning the sleeves.

“Of course.” You mutter. The most basic of jocks. He smirks at you.

“What? Don’t like what ya see?” He teases, and you grit your teeth. Turning back to Mrs. Lawer, you thank her and grab your papers before looking back at Dean.

“Well? Lead the way.” He shakes his head at you with a laugh before turning on his heel and walking out into the hallway.

I wasn’t sure what to say. This girl was really cute. Like next level cute. I thought I was adorable, but her reaction seemed to say otherwise. Oh well, maybe winning her with my charms will work. I look behind me and see her trailing a few steps behind, looking at the school in all its rich person glory. I slow down, and fall into pace with her. She looks up at me, and I smile.

“So, when are you moving in?” I ask, trying to make small talk until we get to the common room.

“Later today.” She says, and I can see how nervous she is.

“Don’t worry, boarding school isn’t that bad. It’s actually fun.” She looks at me knowingly.

“True.” So she’s been to one before. Okay. We walk into a large room with leather furniture, flatscreens, a pool table, and three vending machines. I close the doors behind us. It’s completely empty.

“Here we are: Junior commons. We’ll stay here for about an hour to discuss a few things, then move onto the tour.” She nods, and I realize I haven’t been formally introduced to her yet. We head over to the leather couches and I stop her.

“What?” She asks. I hold out my hand.

“I’m Dean Winchester.” She looks at me oddly, and after an almost uncomfortable amount of time, places her hand in mine.

“I’m y/n y/l/n.” She qucikly withdraws her hand and sits down. I take off my jacket before doing the same.

Gahhhh. I can’t focus. Why? Why is he affecting me like this? No jock had ever made me feel this... weird. I try not to stare at his biceps, or the way his black shirt hugs his body perfectly. No. No, no, no. You learned your lesson last year. Remember that.

“Okay so let’s start with rules. You’ve got your basic school rules like no littering, pay attention, respect the teachers, don’t break dress code, etc. But, then we’ve got our unique rules. Since we are a boarding school, these are more strict. We’ve got an 11pm curfew on school nights, and a 2am curfew on weekends. They do random room checks every week, as well as random car searches every month. We have our safety drills once a month which are pretty standard. Since we’re juniors, we are allowed to have the opposite gender in our rooms, but everyone has to be back by curfew. Underclassmen don’t get that privlage,” he winks at me, “ so I suggest you exercise it as much as possible. Any questions so far?” His tongue shoots out to wet his lips, and I’m momentarily lost for words. At least until I come to my senses.

“Uh yeah, no questions it all seems pretty basic.” I say, swallowing as an awkward silence blankets us. He scratched the back of his neck and glances around the room quickly.

“Yeah. Okay so uh what are your classes?” I grab my schedule and examine it.

“First hour is Medical Science 1, second hour is AP criminology, third hour is AP psychology, Fourth hour is CP Trig and Calc, fifth hour is lunch, sixth hour is AP Lang and comp, seventh hour is AP forensics, and eighth hour is off. Seems pretty good at least.” I say. I look up and his eyebrows are buried in his hairline.

“Damn girl.” He whistles.

“What?” I chuckle.

“Nothing I just realized you’re smart. Like smart smart.”

“I guess.” I never really thought anything of it.

“Well we have the same off hours so that’s cool.”

“Yeah.” I know better then to think he’ll hang out wit me during them though.

“So the only thing is you don’t have a PE class on your schedule so you’ll have to sign up for a club class.” He says.

“Excuse me?”

“Yeah every student is required to take some sort of physical exercise.”

“Okay. Uh this school has a swim team right?”

“Y- uh yup. Yes we do.”

“Awesome that was easy. So what’s next?”

“Okay, uh well let’s do the tour and I’ll explain more as we go.” He stands up and walks towards the door. I scramble to grab my backpack and phone before following him.

We make our way throught the rather massive school, Dean stopping every minute or so to explain something new to me. The information is excessive, and the fact that I’m getting distracted by his jawline or his eyes or the way his muscles are highlighted through his t shirt, is absolutely no help at all. We finally got to my room, and he opened the door.

“Home sweet home.” He says with a chuckle. The room is dark and empty except for a bed, dresser, and desk.

“No roommate, nice.” I say. He nods.

“Yeah that’s why a lot of people try to come here. No roommates. It makes it a nicer experience.” There’s an innuendo in there somewhere, but I ignore it and drop my stuff.

“Nicer then the places I was at before.” You practically shudder at the thought. Dean scoffs.

“Places? As in multiple?” He asks.

“Uh, yeah. Why?”

“Well what’d you do?”

“What are you talking about?”

“I mean,” he says sitting down on the mattress, “why did you get kicked out?”

“Well,” you sit down next to him, “I only got kicked out twice. Every other time my family moved.”

“And I repeat my question: why did you get kicked out?” He leans in close.

“I believe that’s none of your business.” I whisper.

“Why?”

“Because I have no idea who you are. Also, I don’t particularly like you.” I say, standing up and grabbing my backpack.

“Ouch, that hurts.” He says feigning pain. I roll my eyes and walk out of the room.

“Let’s go dumbass.” He hurries after me.

We finish the tour in a relatively peaceful fashion. We come to my third hour class and he flashes me a knee buckling smile.

“Well sweetheart, here we are. I hope my tour skills were up to pat.” He says, his gruff voice captivating me momentarily.

“Yup. We done.” I stand there awkwardly and he smirks at me.

“I’ll see ya around, y/n.” He walks off just as the bell rings. Students pour out of the classrooms and into the halls. I walk into my class and tell my teacher I’m the new student. He points we toward a desk next to a red headed girl. Setting my stuff down, I slide into my seat and stick an AirPod in, ready to pretend I don’t exist. But there’s a snag in my plan. The red haired girl taps on my shoulder, startling me.

“Hi there. I’m Daneel. You are?” She says, holding out her hand with a sickly sweet smile on her face. It makes me uneasy.

“I’m y/n.” I shake her hand quickly.

“Cool. You’re obviously new. Where are you coming from?” She asks.

“Uh just moved here from New York.”

“New York? Wow! That’s crazy. Why’d you move?” God what was this, a criminal investigation? A voice in the back of my head told me she was probably just being friendly, but I knew that wasn’t true.

“Personal reasons.” I say, and put my AirPod back in, effectively ending the conversation.

oh my goddd i did a project for my ap lang class on supernatural and it turned out being 8 pages! i got a 35/35, and bc i have a very liberal teacher i absolutely did not hold back on analyzing that destiel/bi dean subtext :)! my teacher wrote 'awesome!' i was scared she'd just be like 'wtf' lol

Hi to anyone who still follows this blog!

I graduated from high school over a year ago and honestly forgot to update this blog at the time (Whoops). But I was going back through my tumblr blogs (my main and the few side blogs I have) and decides to jump back on this one for a brief moment to discuss my IB results and my life since high school.

So, let's get everyone's first question out of the way: I passed! I received my diploma, and few things are as satisfying as the first time I held the paper proof of my diploma. It was confirmation that all my hard work paid off and that thing's getting framed asap lol.

But let's backtrack. Exams. My senior year I tested in: History HL, Chinese AB, Philosophy HL, and English HL (Lang A). And since I'm pretty sure I didn't ever discuss my junior year exams, I'll talk briefly about them here: Math SL and Biology SL.

So let's begin with Math and Bio. I received a 5 in both. I was nervous for my math exam since test prep in class was not going well for me. I kept getting 3s on cumulative exams, which was difficult to see in the weeks leading up to the exam. For those of you who may not know (I didn't before my first exam), there is a short reading period when the exam starts where you cannot write anything. Just read. And I remember flipping through the exam booklet and finding that I had a good idea on how to go about solving most of the problems. For the problems I wasn't sure about, I at least had an idea on how to start them. Math is one of those exams where showing your work can get you partial points, and I highly recommend attempting each and every problem. Two points can make the difference between a 4 and a 5, which increases your chance of getting that diploma overall. Biology, however, was a breeze for me, if I'm honest. I am actually continuing my education as a bio major, since it was something that I pick up on quickly. I still spent a lot of time studying, though, since the human biology portion was not something I was as familiar with as my school combines the AP and IB bio students (due to there being very few of us IB kids) and the IBO places much emphasis on anatomy than AP does. For those who find biology a daunting class, I highly recommend teaching the concepts to a friend/classmate. Have your notes with you and reference them as need be. If you feel confident discussing the ideas, then you can explain the ideas on paper. While this won't help on the multiple choice as much, this will help you sweep up those points in the written sections.

Moving on to my senior year exams. I received 4s in Chinese and History, a 5 in English, and a 6 in Philosophy. I took Chinese as an Ab Initio course because I didn't take a language my first year of high school. My teacher had done her best to get me up to speed, but nothing was more sobering than opening up that exam booklet and finding that I didn't understand much on that first page (and reading is definitely my best skill in the language). And I still had 4 minutes and 30 seconds left of the reading period. So how did I manage that 4, you may ask? Well, page 2 wasn't nearly as terrifying. I did recognize some of the characters on the first page, so I used what I had to infer what the questions were asking. Before the exam, I spent my studying time to practice characters, which helped when writing my essay as it had brought to mind some characters I had nearly forgotten about (though, to my horror, I found that I had repeatedly wrote a character wrong in my essay, but not terribly so, so I hope it wasn't a huge issues lol).

History was interesting. I was honestly shocked to see that I had only gotten a 4, since I received a 6 or 7 on every exam in class. But, I'll chalk that up to either my teacher having been a gracious grader or the prompts not being in my favour. (Not to mention that one of the days was the same day we tested in English, so writing was miserable after 6-7 hours- I swear I have carpal tunnel or something due to it since I still have mysterious wrist pain to this day from activities that never bothered me before like bowling). I wish I had some advice for how to get through history, but I'm not quite sure what I should have done differently to prepare.

Alright, English. I have to say, I am most proud of my IOC (though, I hear they're altering that aspect of the curriculum). We had rehearsed examples often in class, and I was lucky enough to have gotten a passage from the reading I loved the most and unpacked well. However, what benefitted myself, and my class overall, was that my teacher had selected books that were enjoyable to read and had clear themes to exploit in my essays. Thorough discussions in class allowed us to add to our notes, and soon my books were covered in writing in the margins. So, my best advice of this class is to turn it into book club. Get together with your friends, share your thoughts, and add on to other's. It may give you the idea you need to connect them together and write about in your exam.

Finally, philosophy. I actually had the same teacher for philosophy as I had for English. First things first, don't do what I did and finish your independent reading less than a half an hour before the exam. Though it was fresh in my mind, I probably shouldn't have procrastinated as much as I did. I read the prescribed chapters from Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex. 10/10 would recommend. I am a huge fan of existentialism (shout out to Albert Camus), so I found the concepts easy to navigate. If you're not a fan of existentialism, don't pick this book, by all means. For the rest of the exam, I highly recommend making a chart of philosophers and what they theorized. Use anybody and everybody's ideas as evidence or counterarguments in your essays. Having a good idea of how these philosophers used their claims helps you immensely. I would also recommend that when you practice philosophical writing, you create a chart with the elements (implications, relevance, critiques, etc.) you need with bullet points of your claims. Do this with your IA. I also did this with my EE since that was also a philosophy paper, but more about that in another post. Make this ideas as transparent as you can make them. You will thank yourself for it.

Alright, I know I implied that I'd discuss everything in this post, but it turned out to be much longer than I expected. So, I'll make separate posts about EE, CAS, IAs (if that comes up), getting my results, and how it compares to college life (and what the hell is going on with that now). Just because I've graduated, that doesn't mean that I stopped supporting IB students and the struggle of going through it. My habits as a student in the programme still affect me as a college student and give me much to reflect on now. this question is adorable!! i could spend hours talking about how lovely my best friend is she’s so fucking cool. i would say we’re best friends because our personalities/interests are pretty damn similar so we get along really well!! we also don’t disagree on a lot which is good because we have like zero arguments. OH and i think we have a mutual appreciation for each other and it’s not a one sided or draining friendship. if any of you have a “best friend” who is never there for you or who you really don’t like spending loads of time with find a new friend!! everyone deserves a best friend like mine lol

Wednesday:

I wake up early to save time for a coffee run. I thought coffee would double my brain cells for the ap lang exam. It didn’t.

I can’t believe I’ve complained about other tests I’ve taken in the past because THIS shit was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Time is ticking and we also had to tell time with a actual circle clock and Comon seriously it takes less time to just take a 0.5 sec look at a digital clock because finding those hands on a clock... Julia: “why don’t we bring over the big gym clock for you” shut up, Julia unfortunately not everyone can write as good as you smh.

So here I am stressed tf out. My essays are trash and no one told us we had to write with PEN. I change my mind constantly; how am I supposed to erase HUH. I cried at one point as well. :(

The worst 4 hours of my life finally went by and I had to hop straight into the school van for track. I told Sonya my misery. We couldn’t stop laughing over the fact that I centered my windmill essay around BIRDS. At that moment I also realized I mixed up economic and environmental. Sweet!

Arriving at the meet, Sonya and I stay in the van to pass time. I tell her my new obsession with Zumba. And show her the step by step videos I’ve been watching lol... maybe she was inspired as well and will practice each night in her room like me (totally kidding, sarcasm)

Oh we came REAL early so why not take a lil hike around. With the help of Sonya’s knee and two failed attempts, i pull myself up into this pretty tree. It wasn’t as fun as I remember from my childhood days. but the real fun was trying to get up so I meannn

And then track starts. I have the worst jumps of my track career and for the first time in my 4 years, i hadn’t placed first for long. I was really struggling with self confidence at this point. She Can’t write essays and now she forgot how to jump.

Also doing High jump IN the rain, you basically jump into a huge puddle and with the mix of dirt from the pit....I refused to change in the porta potties so I had mrs Noel, Natalie, and sona make me a wall. It was kinda freeing tbh. My outfit was lookin real cute

in Mod, I stare at a kid for a solid 3 minutes because I wanted his apple juice that bad. Ever since my ‘juice diet’, I’ve been having serious withdrawals.

alrighty here’s my recap of my first FULL week of junior year!!

Monday 😟:

Monday was pretty okay, I might upload photos and videos separately cause my phone is glitchy. But I also had a dentist appointment that day so I came home and passed tf out and then woke up and did some homework. My physics teacher showed us music videos for class so that was pretty fun.

I have no pictures for Tuesday so here’s one of the video my teacher showed us. Tuesday I kinda of came home and did some homework and slept again cause I was kinda tired still from the previous week but I got most of my stuff done so slay. I also got a 40/50 on the AP Chem test I took this day

WEDNESDAY 😭

Wednesday was fun. We did a media bias project in AP Environmental and found that gem above from a very right wing website that was claiming that the government (liberals) are trying to steal babies dna and castrate them. Besides that I went home for like 10 minutes and then booked it to work and did get home until like 9:20 pm (yikes). I did some school stuff during work but I was so tired when I got home that I passed tf out and didn’t finish SHIT. I had stuff due the next day so I was worried but the teachers understand and most of them don’t take off points if it’s late cause they know the students are busy. I also got extra credit for fucking around at the end of a test and drawing my AP Lang teacher a hand turkey. Took an amazing nap in the VLC (virtual learning center/library) that day and woke up to my calculator going absolutely WILD.

Thursday 💀

Particularly fun day cause I found the WAP chair my friend Max (he graduated I miss him so much) painted 2 years ago. It’s amazing I know. Today was more productive. Still planning on starting a productivity challenge I just keep forgetting to make a post lol. I grinder out work in the VLC instead of napping and was pretty productive untillll….. I get home and call my mom (she’s ij the East coast visiting relatives rn) and then I book it to work and work until like 9 on AGAIN BRUH (to explain I should be getting off at 8 but oh well more money for me ig. I did school during work again and had a meltdown cause after working on a problem for like 2 hours I realized I was just putting the decimal in the wrong place lol. Besides that I got home and did a bit of work but then I passed out again until like 5:55 am again (I get up around 6 cause school starts at 7:50 am lol.

FRIDAY 💯💯💯

Particularly good day. Didn’t have to take my trig test THANK GOD. But I still have lots of weekend homework which is fine because besides working from 9-2 on Saturday I’m free. I may go to the mall with my friend and get some lipgloss and books 😍. I’m pretty excited for this weekend to be able to finish my work and relax. I took moon pictures last night also but I will make a separate post about that!

Hello! I realize I’ve been a little vague about my actualschool, so sorry about that. I actually go to Northeastern University, and Iabsolutely love it. I’ll admit I don’t know too much about BC since it’s way out there at the end of the greenline, but what I have heard has all been really positive! I also find that justbeing in Boston really contributes to my college experience, since beingsurrounded by so many universities means you have lots of opportunities to goto talks, attend classes at other schools, collaborate with researchers, andreally be immersed in what you’re studying.

As far as stats/tips/app process goes, I imagine you meangrades and test scores and the like. In true studyblr fashion, I definitelyfeel a touch reluctant to post that stuff, but I’m also asking classmates allthe same questions about GREs and personal statements for grad school rightnow, so I totally know the feeling. So in the interest of transparency, here wego.

I received a 750 on both the math and reading sections ofthe SAT, and a 760 on the writing. (I took it twice since the first time I gota 730 on the math and as a physics major I didn’t want my math score to be the lowestone, but that may or may not have been worth it.) I also took the ACT withwriting, and I got a 34 on that. I can’t figure out what my writing score wasthough; I actually had to track down my high school’s college prep account toget a lot of this stuff because I couldn’t not remember.  

While I always felt confident about standardized type tests,I was actually not that great of a student in high school (still working onthat), and my GPA suffered a lot at various points. To be clear, I mean thatfor a while sophomore year, I was failing my honors English class because I wasso behind on annotations. That said, I was also pretty good at damage control(I like to think I still am?) and usually pulled it together by the end of thesemester. My overall GPA for high school was 3.9, but that’s weighted with APand Honors courses; I did not actually do that well, but I can’t find anunweighted GPA. I can’t find an actual transcript, but I did track down myCollege Board account info, and my AP test scores were World History (4), EnvironmentalScience (4), Physics B (4), Microeconomics (5), English Lit. and Composition(5), Calculus AB (5), Physics C Mechanics (4), English Lang. and Composition(5), and Calculus BC (4). I also took AP Government and US History, but didn’ttake the tests. Again, disclaimer, I tend to over-preform on tests - I did notdo proportionately well in the actual classes.

I honestly didn’t have too much in the way of academic extracurriculars(it might have just been my casual mathletes membership, actually), but I wasreally involved in choir, theater, and orchestra throughout school. 7 years ofmusical theater, 11 years of choir (president senior year), several chamberchoirs and ensembles, solofests and state choirs, and 8 years of cello (I thinkI might have been first chair for a hot minute at one point?) were definitelymy “I promise I do things other than cry about math” selling points.

As far as personal statements go, I have some mixedfeelings. On one hand, I honestly I can’t believe my teachers let me think itwas a good idea to submit second person prose about toxic relationships for myCommon App essay, but on the other hand my college applications went reallywell so maybe that’s actually the secret. My method was to take personalwriting I already had and was reasonable pleased with, and then slash and burnit down to 650 words. I’m tempted to say don’t do this, since looking back Ireally don’t like what I ended up submitting, but also, see above. The mostimportant thing is to write something ASAP (maybe even write a few things andpick your favorite), and edit it for forever. Show it to your mom, show it toyour English teacher, show it to your English teacher from second grade, sendit to a stranger on the internet, and get as much feedback as you can. Editingis much more important than writing something good to begin with.

Again, transparency. I would do things differently now please I promise I know! I was is a really fortunate position to be able toapply to ten schools, partially through fee waivers and partially by virtue ofbeing relatively well-off financially. Please… don’t apply to ten schools. Imean if you want to, go for it I guess, but really, please don’t ever thinkthat’s necessary. Definitely have a safety school or two, but try not to applyplaces you really don’t have any intention of attending. I ended upinterviewing for one school, and it did not go great, so if you anticipatehaving an interview, please please please do a practice one. I was so awkward. LikeI said before, applications went really well, and of the ten schools, I wasaccepted to 8, wait-listed for 1, and rejected (I hate that term, but “notaccepted” sounds so arrogant) to 1. I’m hesitant to put a full list, but theyincluded one state college, Boston University, Northeastern, University ofRochester, and Yale. I’ll let you guess which one I got flat-out rejected fromlol.

I ended up getting similar financial aid packages for NEU,BU, and UofR, so it ended up coming down to where I wanted to go. Which bringsme back to stanning Boston, the greatest place ever to go to college in thehistory of places. Other than location, my biggest advice would be to look verycarefully at what the program you actually intend to study looks like at each school.For example, lots of schools are really excellent for certain subjects and havea very prestigious reputation, but if the course you actually want to study issmall, underfunded, or just not as good as other colleges, who cares? I know, alot of people, but try to put it aside as much as you can.
