My mom was definitely the "more abusive parent" but understanding what I now understand about women & family dynamics, I can say beyond a doubt that that's because she was the week parent & my dad was the weekend parent. My mom was very mean to me and much more concerned with making sure she had enough wine to drink than ensuring I was healthy, and as a kid, going to my dad's house was the only peace I got, so he and I had a much better relationship.. but especially now as a parent, I look back and see that he put absolutely no effort into helping my brother or I with academics or development in general—that was left entirely up to my mom (and she flubbed it bad and I would never treat my own child that way, but I understand the way that things were against her). If things had been reversed, I would have seen a lot more of "drunk angry dad" than "carefree weekend dad." And even tho the incidents when my dad said/did fucked up things were fewer & farther between, they were much more intense when they did happen—yelling at the top of his lungs, in detail, about the ways he was going to beat me, for example. My mom was mean, but usually didn't make me feel that unsafe. I think it's so dishonest and immature of people to use their own experiences as the victims of maternal abuse to paint a picture of women as generally unstable and/or violent, at least more so than men.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? complicated? sometimes it is a bit annoying when it gets excessive especially if it's real life languages but sometimes it does work in setting a tone and vibe, like for instance using bits and pieces of sindarin or quenya. ig it is just that it takes a lot of skill to do it in a way that isn't jarring.

What's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to? for fandoms i def want to dip in the x files (i mean i do have a silly self insert wip i might yeet into ao3 one day but, like, actual msr fic or something) and i feel like one day i'm gonna want to venture more into star wars too. and then for tolkien ships i haven't written all that much lotr stuff so maybe like try my hand at faramir fic at least

What's your favorite fic you've written? this is pretty interesting because when i started writing this for silm smut week not too long ago i had no idea this would became a favourite of mine but as it turns out i'm so proud of the way this luthien/daeron fic fleshed out and i adore the whole vibe and the picture i managed to paint there and i will forever be riding the high of getting a comment where it was described as "gothic" like wow goals

Kim lets out a long, weary sigh as she finally gets back to the relative peace of her room, taking a moment to rest back against her shut door and scrub at her face. The energy and emotional exhaustion of everything that had happened between the last time she'd been here and now seemed to be sinking into her bones, and she wanted little more than to sink to her knees right there and just be comatose for a while.

She knew from experience, however, that the floor was cold and miserable like that, especially this time of year; so, instead, she opts to shrug off her coat and toss it blindly in the direction of her desk, trudging towards her bed. She closes her eyes and lets herself fall forward into it, ready to finally, properly rest, maybe even unpack her thoughts about everything- but then, she hears the crinkle of paper as she makes contact with the sheets, and her eyes fly open while she rolls to the side and, thankfully, off of the object.

She blinks down at an envelope that had been tossed haphazardly on the bed, probably by Hollie, and after a moment recognizes the style of it. Oh, that one guy... how long has this been here? Did I miss this before I left? She hesitates briefly, mostly just in resistance to the idea of having to continue actively thinking, but sighs and sits up anyway. She won't be able to relax if it's just sitting there, tempting her.

Propping up her pillows, she leans back against them and opens it, pulling out both the letter and the folded poster. She looks over the letter first, and after a moment, lets out another sigh, this time a short, guilty thing. The words feel genuine, so she can't help but feel slightly bad about her previous response, but... Well, if they knew anything about her, they might've expected it. She tries to take comfort in that fact, glancing over in the general direction she left the drumsticks. Then, she pulls out her phone and snaps a picture of the letter, opening her blog to begin her reply.

Hey, sorry this too so long to get back to. Life and things; with how people talk, maybe you've heard about the party by now? Julie's ragers, am I right? The apology is appreciated... and accepted. I think I believe you, especially given you're acknowledging the creep factor there. I'm not really a big gift person, I guess, so it was a little off putting just to begin with, anything else aside. I think you've already given me more than my parents got me for Christmas, and I don't even have a name for you beyond "Crush Guy." But, hey, it's far from the most uncomfortable I've been in these situations, so you're actually doing fairly alright in that regard. Thank you for the well wishes; I'll probably be needing them, ha! And no, I think you've quelled the fires against you, for now. (Joking- this is why I do the stupid videos...)

She pauses briefly, looking over at the newest gift and carefully unfolds it, trying to work out the creases as she goes. Once it's unveiled, she stops to look at it for a long while, a bit surprised by how much she genuinely likes it. She sets it aside with a mental note to hang it up later- ideally before their next band practice. She wouldn't be attaching a photo of it to the post, to help keep the surprise til then.

And again for the gifts. I think the rest of the band will really dig this one, honestly- especially Stills. It's very nice.

She gives it a once over before nodding to herself and hitting send, content. Then, setting the letter and the poster further aside, as to not crumple them, Kim moves to curl up at the top of her bed in a tight ball, eyes sliding shut peacefully. I'll think about things later. Ball time, she thinks idly, and then thankfully, blissfully, proceeds to continue thinking nothing at all.

I'm gonna do my Paint a Vulgar Picture rant today if you don't mind!!

Paint a Vulgar Picture to me is one of those songs that just keeps giving (i like to do this sporcle to make sure i remember the lyrics hahahaa) - you've got the beginning depiction of the capitalistic pigs seeing the death of a star simply as a marketing opportunity, which is already chilling (+the whole "reissue repackage repackage" and all its equivalent refrains throughout the song are just amazing), then it suddenly switches viewpoints to the dead star's perspective, and the life they "chose". what really gets me here is that the song has so much empathy and understanding towards this hypothetical star that supposedly "wanted" this life (and of course it does, it's obvious that morrissey sees this person as both a stand-in for his idols, and who he expects to eventually become). the question "you could have said no, couldn't you?" to me, really asks us to feel for this person, because who could really say no to fame? and once you're swept away in that tide, it's not really your choice anymore ("what makes most people happy leads us headlong into harm"). i would have been happy with just that, but then it shifts perspective to the "fan", this ordinary, plain, boring fan and their remarkably dull life, that manages still to find some joy through their idol ("in my bedroom in those ugly new houses i danced my legs down to the knees..."), and finally what i take to be a bit of irony, the fan's perception of the star as some hero to be put on a pedestal and "deified" after death, no truer to the real person than the "vulgar picture" that the record companies are painting of them. also, i haven't even mentioned the absolutely achingly beautiful guitar solo interlude!!!

I own The World Won't Listen on cd so can confirm both Oscillate Wildly and Money Changes Everything are certified bangers - I do absolutely get what you mean by not really listening to instrumentals though, i don't really either but I'm willing to do it here to hear johnny's beautiful music!!

i wouldn't say i dislike london, but i find it a little repetitive? i don't mind the punk influences too much, i feel like TQID title track is also quite similar in that regard and i loooove that one. i think in terms of their "experiments", im most fond of Rusholme Ruffians and its rockabilly feel :)

for rubber ring I am sooo stuck on the lines around "the passing of time and all of its crimes are making me sad again" - i'm generally someone who's very much nostalgic about the past and memories and all that, which is why i'm gravitating towards older music as well i guess! also i feel a new obsession coming on and it's "these things take time" - I'm not even sure this is a good song from them lol but ive been listening to it a lot

Nowhere Fast is such a good pick!!! It's a very very good demonstration of "fun but still depressing" smiths music lol, and I 100% get what you mean by it giving you energy!! Also I think "I think about life & I think about death and neither one particularly appeals to me" is the superior version of "I'm not happy & I'm not sad" lolll.

Last Night I Dreamt... makes my top 5 on most days, I've said this before but it's so so so so unfair that some twenty-year-old just went "oh im sad" when he was sitting on a bus and wrote like the most fucking beautiful hauntingly sad chord progression to ever exist in the history of music? and yeah i've heard a lot of people complain about the lack of a radio edit to cut the beginning and i disagree so much with them - this song is an EXPERIENCE and that includes the heavy opener, without it the rest would not hit as hard for sure

I'm...not actually a huge fan of London sorry! (lol watch me get obsessed with it a week later) Wonderful Woman is lovely though, but I do think it's instrumentally stronger than it is melodically (sometimes i wish morrissey would have left this one alone and written lyrics to oscillate wildly) In terms of tracks i'm crazy about that I think are under-appreciated, I'd say probably stretch out and wait (it makes me so relaxed and hopeful), paint a vulgar picture (this one is absolutely devastating to me, probs could write a whole other paragraph about it lol), maybe unhappy birthday to an extent too (the voice crack at "from the one you left behind" makes me fucking cry)

and How Soon is Now!! not basic at all, classics are popular bc they're GOOD, and this one is LEGENDARY. it definitely captures the youthful anger and bitterness so well, and sonically achieved something really unique!!

Do you have a routine for writing?

I've dabbled with different ways to get *in the zone* and actually put out good words without getting derailed, but there isn't anything solid. My best performing routine is: put baby down to sleep, IMMEDIATELY lock self in a room away from husband and animals, chug a coke zero and eat two pieces of candy. This almost always results in me managing to start really writing within, like, an hour and a half? Which means I'll get in like 45 minutes of actually writing before it's time to take care of the baby again.

What are your favorite tropes/pairings

Unrequited love that's actually totally requited.

Pairings where one person romanticizes the other to the point that they miss/ignore enormous red flags, hopefully making the reader a little uncomfortable :) like with Princess Leo being an unrepentant liar and Deacon literally killing innocent people to protect Whisper from an imagined danger. (He has to be sure though, right?) I guess I just like to show that you never quite know what someone else is thinking and that anything can happen and that the world is a spooky place.

Do you have a favorite fic of yours?

Deacon/Whisper might be my current fave. RJ and Leo will always hold a special place in my heart, though.

Anything you don't like about your writing?

Some of the background characters are flatter than I'd like. I try to write them as if I had a binder full of backstory workd out for each one without actually having a binder full of backstory worked out for each one, which means that... well, continuity can be a nightmare at times and so not everyone gets the best treatment I can give.

I also wish I could be more descriptive, I just have a hard time knowing what to include. I try to include as little as possible bc nothing turns me off to a reading experience faster than like a fit check followed by an in-depth description of their appearance followed by the precise degree of the angle at which they have cocked their hip out like!! No one is going to notice all that about someone unless they are fucking creepily obsessive with zero tact!! For someone to notice every thing about every outfit and every setting and every expression all the time? It's an automatic DNF in my mind. Too much mental work for me to imagine things precisely the way the author sees it and I have to assume I'm not the only one that feels that way so i dont write that way... But still I could stand to paint a clearer picture at times. Just because I know where the desk is in the room doesn't mean everyone does, etc.

Oh and too many of my sentences start with nouns/pronouns. That is something I specifically look for in later stages of editing but sometimes it's like pulling teeth to fix because, again, I have an almost pathological aversion to detail.

Now something you do like?

Something I've really focused on improving and which I feel I've improved a great deal is pacing during sex scenes. It's hard to draw out the prose long enough to make the reader really live in the moments that are... simple but repetitive? Lol. But it's something that bothered me enough about the first scenes I wrote that I honed in on the skill and I feel like I write some damn good stuff now! Even if it's kinda fucked up sometimes! And it's funny bc I decided to start writing fanfic unsure that I would even write any smut at all. I thought I'd be too embarrassed and I looked at writing fic as a way to develop skill so I could write original YA fiction someday. HA!!

Also, allowing the narrator's internal voice to bleed into their dialogue the way i do is something that I am very proud of bc it's what's allowed me to even write words in the first place. It was the change in my approach to writing that allowed me to actually complete and be proud of a scene for the first time, and I feel like its sort of unique and therefore engaging, so... Win/win.

So, first of all, I'm shooting to get this chap out this weekend, provided I don't pass out AGAIN on the couch.

As for your questions, some of these I will answer here and the others will be in a post-STS thing that you had requested (lol). Let's chit-chat

1. All of my stories are a blend of reality and fiction. I pull a lot from my life to lend reality to an alternate universe, and that includes the really fun stuff, too. ;) Even if the scenarios are fantasy, they're often based on an interaction I had or grounded in a relationship or feelings I had at some point in my life or choices I didn't make.

2. I'll address this in a couple of weeks.

3. A guilty pleasure? If we're talking tropes, I am an absolute ho for enemies to lovers. I love reading it as much as I love writing it, particularly because of the snarky banter. This can mean rivals who fall in love or people on opposite sides of the law or issues, but I also love the redemptive story arcs that come with this trope, like antiheroes who finally realize how they're missing love to feel complete. The possibility of change for a person is so rare, and when it does happen, it's super rewarding. I eat that shit up.

But I am really a fan of any ___ x lovers trope. I love falling in love--period. I don't really read too many established relationship fics and I definitely don't write them because I revel in the inherent tension and drama that comes with falling in love, and, honestly, as someone who's been married a long time, I don't like adding tension to a relationship either lol. By the same token, I never just jump into the smut because the tension is what makes the smut that much more powerful or sexy. Anyway, that's my style and I'm sticking to it. :D

4. ^^^see the end of question three for part. If I had to label my actual "writing" style, I guess I'd call it cinematic--I'm fond of smooth dialogue exchanges backed by descriptive setting to paint a movie-like picture in a reader's head the same way it lives in mine. I also have the real problem of limiting my storyline, so it always seems to stretch into movie length.

[ ISSUE 2 ] [ LOLA CEP ]

And were backkkkk !!! If you haven't heard of this absolute fashion icon or the movie, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, go straight to disney plus and watch it ! Its cheesy, and I didn't know what to expect on my first watch but its quickly become one of my comfort movies and I watch it ALL THE TIMEE. And I mean that. SOOO without further a due, lets get into the analysis of Mary Elizabeth Cep (or better known as Lola Steppe)'s style :)

Lola is definitely unique, and her style isn't really for the more casual so even if you wouldn't wear any of these iconic fits in their entirety, these are great examples of places to borrow little pieces and add them to your every day to spice it up a little !

I should mention that this is the section where I normally do a bit of intro about the person whose style we're analyzing, but since this is a movie character, their personality is very accessible in the film/show they are in since it's self-contained anddd there is only enough background info that is necessary to the plot ! okayyy let's get started

Lola's style is eccentric, as is her personality, and her outfits follow my favorite formula which is whatever she thinks looks good. The writer of the film states that she is a Pisces, and every outfit shows depth and thought put into it and exemplifies good style knowledge that is essential to making good outfits (psst. need 2 know more abt that ? I have a post coming out ;)

Let's looks at some key details of Lola's outfits !

Accessories! One of the most important parts of these fits is the accessories ! Lola is a sucker for a good hat (as am I) and my favorite type of hat right now is the baker boy/newsboy hat we see here. The grommets make it even better (one of my personal fav details rn) She wears other types of hats too though, including baseball caps, beanies, and scarves tied around her head. Accessories normally make an outfit, but her use of hats, belts, outfit-appropriate necklaces, and jewelry, commonly seen in large silver hoops, and of course her signature bottlecap necklace (you can make it! see link below) totally make most of her outfits.

Layering (Jackets !!) Lola wears many types and builds of jackets in this movie, my favorites being her army green zip-up, feather-trimmed mesh duster, and don't even get me started on the amazing patchwork leather jacket ! The outfits without these layers are okay but often her jacket is a statement piece and totally makes the outfit She also employs layering in her earliest outfits, layering the fishnet top over the "I <3 NY" tee I'm sure you've already seen on Pinterest and her first day of school outfit that is topped off with a scarf-like shawl tied around her shoulders

Graphic tees/ Patterned tops Now if you hadn't seen the last image on Pinterest I'm 100% SURE you've seen this iconic photo. I love this outfit and the color story is dramatically made better by Lola's red and black simple graphic tee she wears with her green cargos that is dejavu to Freaky Friday (issue coming soon) This is the top she chooses from Stu Wolff's house nearing the end of the movie and colored metallic is so very early 2000's

Customization I absolutely LOVEE customization (issue coming soon, geez how many times have I said that now lol) and it is a big part of Lola's outfits. This handmade-looking NY Knicks jersey is to die for and I'd like to believe she made it herself, and you probably could recreate or do something inspired by with materials from the thrift ! As you can see in some of the previous photos as well she adds her own decorative flair to all of her things, like the pins on her bag in the bike pic and her customized name hat in the same image.

Dressing for the Occasion One of Lola's biggest fashions strengths, I think is dressing for the occasion/ situation she is put in. You can see this in her outfits for the "death" of her favorite band Sidarthur (not pictured, can't find for some reason), her audition for the school play (modern pygmalion), and this 80's workout fit she wore to dance practice. This makes her outfits seen on key and perfect for the event she is at, and she never seems out of place, just more dressed than the rest

Last Call !! Makeup and Hair !

Lola's hair is Lindsay Lohan's natural orangey-red, but more blonde on top making it seem a bit sun-bleached (doesn't make much sense in context but still very pretty). She doesn't do many hairstyles in this movie, instead opting for hats when there is detail missing on the top of her outfit. This being said her hair is down for 99% of the movie, which means it's in loose spiral curls (Let's be honest nobody's hair does that naturally) so a blowout is probably necessary.

Her makeup is veryy minimal, but you can tell she is wearing some. To me, her character seems like someone who would experiment a lot with her makeup looks, but if anything it lets the outfits shine even more. I would guess she is wearing nude or pinkish eyeshadow, maybe a bit of brown to darken right under her eyes and where eyeliner goes on top of the eye. I also see a pinkish blush (choose what's right for your skin and undertones :) and most likely mascara with black eyeliner on both waterlines. Highlight could be added to make the look more modern but make sure it's light !

Lola's character is very outgoing and I think we could all learn from her a bit. She wears all of her outfits with confidence, isn't afraid of what others think, and believes in herself and her abilities. She is eccentric, sure, but very fashionable and isn't afraid of failure. She always gives it her all and I think that is very admirable.

makeup is minimal, neutral eyeshadow, mascara, pinky blush, and black eyeliner in the waterlines, maybe highlight to modernize it but LIGHT !

In my opinion, I feel that Mina is the perfect match for you!! First lets get some compatible basics out of the way. hi! sorry to bother, (jumping from your instagram to ask you this lmao :^)) i've seen your art coursework over the pass couple days on your and i love the painting you're doing so much! (could be an odd question idk) i was wondering how you find working with oil paint and if you have any tips for using them? i'm just generally curious on your experience and opinion on them :) absolutely love your work and thanks in advance! x

Aw thank you! That means a lot to me that you particularly like my paintings and not just my fan art (although I do love doing both) :’) I guess, one of the things with oil paints, is that it comes down to style and how you decide to use them. Some people blend blend blend so their pieces are very smooth, others blob blob blob so their pieces are textured, some do a bit of both or use hardly any paint at all. It’s up to you what works best. Once you find whatever way is easiest for you to paint in and what you like the look of, you’ve got it! Paint away!! And it always comes down to practice, my first oil painting was very messy, in fact it was my first ever painting let alone with oil paint. But I kept going, and it’s what led me into painting in a more textured style, I feel much more free using blobs here and there. I really like palette knives too (although I still don’t think I use them properly haha, I just go w it). I also prefer bigger canvases, bc then I can reALLY go all out and paint (with smaller canvases, it’s more obvious when you make a mistake, and they’re harder to fix). I really like using a lot of paint for my paintings, I dislike seeing mine so dry and wispy looking, but that doesn’t mean I don’t like anybody else’s style that’s like that! Some people can really pull it off. However, to get the hang of oil paints, what’s very important is the understanding of colour and how it works and what you think looks best- bc once you have that nailed, it’s actually quite easy. But you have to trust your own judgement of your work. When I say how colours work, I think you need to get the basics of shadows, highlights (where they go, what looks too ridiculous or too sparse in shadow) and learn the complimentary colours so you know how to mix colours a bit better. And picture in your head what green would look like if you add blue, for instance, because with oil paints, they don’t dry v fast and so you have the scope to mix/blend a bit on canvas to get the colours you want. Personally, I sometimes use my picture and put my brush up to it to see if the colour matches, that helps. But I subconsciously mix my colours now with the knowledge of complimentary colours just bc of practice. Sorry I typed so much, I hoped the tips I gave helped a little bit. Idk I’m just really passionate when it comes to painting. I’ve been doing art for like 12/13 years now and I’ve only been painting for two of them, so I do not know everything about oils. It’s actually hard to explain logically what I do bc.. I don’t really know I just get so lost in the moment when I’m painting (lol I’m so lame). But yes, good luck out there !! Painting may be frustrating at times, but, I promise you in the end it is SUPER fun :D

I'm actually sorta obsessed with drawing tiny, dabbing figures right now because I just discovered an easy way to draw dabs and…well. It’s fun?)

AWW tysm! Tbh though I get the struggle. I hated all paints for the longest time because I also had no idea how to use brushes and control the amount of water I used and ended up with shapeless blobs or super runny pics (also I’ve never actually learned how to paint or draw…a couple of short lessons when I was really little, a month(?) of lessons around last year or the year before, that’s pretty much it. So idk how to do things really lol). But I sorta-recently got obsessed with watercolor paintings (SO PRETTY) and that’s why I started ‘practicing’ (AKA watching/reading a bunch of tutorials and trying my best to remember the few things I actually learned XD). I still can’t draw stuff just with watercolors though, I need to do a light pencil sketch and then color with paint.

OK that sounds so cool but problem: My phone is a super old flip phone that I’ve had since I was eight(?), so mobile games are a no XD and my parents probably wouldn’t buy me anything that costs money (they let me play simple free RP games and dating games on the internet since those are usually fairly innocent (I mean, it’s plot/character-based stuff, almost like a manga) but not anything too 'big’ you know? If I was old enough to buy games like that with my own money I don’t think they’d care tho, as long as I didn’t get obsessed with games or anything.)

Also just realized that I’m stupid and apparently forgot that I don’t have Steam. I was going to install it but can I ask you exactly what it is/how it works, first? I’m just kinda worried about randomly installing this since I don’t quite get it yet ^^;; (sorry I can be really, really stupid when it comes to stuff like this)

THAT’S SO CUTE. Let me recommend you a game too- a free RPG/Dating game called Ascension by ImpQueen! No download, you just go to ImpQueen and play it. There are three(?) chapters. The first chapter might not be that interesting compared to other games, but the game and the story keep getting more complex as you go on :D you also get new dateable characters every chapter and the MC, Aida, is AWESOME. Also, in chapter two and three you can actually customize the main cast’s appearances, like you’d do in a dress-up game! Another cool thing is that you get different 'personality points' depending on the things you say/do, and the amount of points you have for a certain personality can change the outcomes of certain situations.

It’s also really fun because other than the romance, the plot and Aida’s journey is super interesting too.

Funny thing is I thought I liked physical contact (like cuddling, hugging, hand-holding) but turns out that’s not the case XD I get super awkward when anyone who’s not my mom, dad, or my little sister/younger cousin touches me. Tbh the only person I feel comfortable with cuddling anytime, anywhere is my little sister because she’s still smol LOL

It’s definitely weird when people who aren’t that close with you try to hug you though. The only thing that can make it worse is if they gush about what a good, sweet child you are while doing it XD

Ah, that’s what makes it even more impressive! I mean, we had art in elementary school, but it was mostly the ‘learn stuff yourself’ kind of art. Needles to say, I didn’t learn a lot. But watercolours really are a nice way of painting, since they can have really vibrant colours, yet be serene at the same time. Most people I know who draw, watercolour or not, use sketches and references, so I don’t see anything wrong with that ^^ Just take your time to learn what you want ^^

Oh, I see! So, free, computer games for you… Well, right now, CP is the only one I can think of, but I’ll discover more in the future and share them with you when I do ^^ The only paid games I play are on my phone, since I’m too shy to ask my parents to but me otome games… I have 0 problems playing them on my own, but not a lot of people know that I play them. 

Right, steam.  It’s a gaming platform. Technically, it’s an app for the computer on which you can download games that are available in the steam store. Some are free, some are paid. 

This is how the page looks. The little green button in the upper left corner is to download the app itself, and you’ll also need to create an account.  You’ll need to give an email, but it’s only for account verification and to send you bills if you decide to buy anything. However, if you don’t buy anything, the email will mostly be useless after the verification. I mean, I don’t remember getting a spam email from them at all.  After that, just go to the search bar, type Cinderella Phenomenon. And press play the game! It should automatically download the game to the steam app and you’re good to play ^^  No worries about asking questions! It’s actually admirable how you’re so careful around the internet ^^

Oh, I’ve actually played that before! I could never finish chapter 3, though… For some reason, it keeps glitching at one scene making me unable to continue further =3= It was quite fun to play! I just don’t remember most of it anymore, since it’s been a while since i’ve played ^^;;;
