Merry TuTchTMas! 2 Lords a’leaping… BROOKLYN MACK with FRED ASTAIRE . THIS YEAR’S TuTchTMAS JOINT features the ground-breaking ballet powerhouse Brooklyn Mack (although the aforementioned ground is usually far below this athletic air-dweller.) The culturally-en-pointe-monikered Mr. Mack first appeared on my TuTchT IG timeline during Black History Month after he and Misty Copeland made history as the first Black Female & Male leads to ever dance Swan Lake on a major concert stage. (The Kennedy Center, no less.) That was in 2015 with the Washington Ballet. I’ve been a fan & follower of this brother ever since. He is amazingly down to earth for such a high-flying superstar of the classical dance world. When I was selecting this year’s dancer I knew it was about time my TuTchTmas puppetized tributes finally expanded their reach, up into the high art world where our brothers Brooklyn and Fred could fully embrace the soaring quirkidom of this WTF-ish tradition. . Brooklyn’s storied history includes stints with the Joffrey Ballet, Orlando Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and globe-spanning guest appearances. His current guest residency is with London’s @EnglishNationalBallet where he just blew audiences & critics away as Lankendem in Le Corsaire at the London Coliseum. If you don’t already, you should DEFINITELY follow @BrooklynMack5 !! (Warning: stretch your neck muscles first because he’s almost always somewhere up in the stratosphere.) And with the traditional dancing of the TuTchTmas puppets, this year’s TuTchTmas Afterglow season officially comes to a close. TuTchTMas AFTERGLOW - Shine-worthy holiday posts you may have missed in the rush. . Here’s a throwback to last year’s “The Nutcracker and The Four Realms” which featured the work of our brother Charles “Lil Buck” Riley as the Mouse King. While the film produced some of the most amazing production design I’ve seen on screen and a magical score adaption of Tchaikovsky’s ballet by James Newton Howard, the general consensus was that the film was achingly short of dance performances. With the brilliance of Misty Copeland and a cast of amazing dancers on hand, including Buck, they appear only as afterthoughts in the main storyline. Luckily, if you stayed attentive through the end credits, you got to catch more of both Buck and Misty Copeland. . I love seeing great performers of color playing such prominent roles in this 120 year-old European-rooted Christmas dance tradition, not to mention what is said by presenting Memphis Jookin’ on equal footing with Classic Ballet in this project. yupyup. Big. Here’s a montage of some of my favorite fleeting Lil Buck moments in this eye-popping holiday spectacular, including his performance in the end credits.
