Review: Raiders From the Sea - Lois Walfrid Johnson (Viking Quest, 1)
Title: Raiders From the Sea Author: Lois Walfrid Johnson Series: Viking Quest, 1 Release Date: August 2003 Publisher: Moody Publishers Rating: 1.5 stars
Favourite character: I didn't care enough about the characters Least favourite character: Once again, didn't care
Mini-Review: This was… annoying. Very preachy, not enough Vikings and too much inaccuracies to how faith in God and prayer actually works. You don't just tell God you want to forgive something and it immediately disperses, it's a process. Also not enough pillaging for a Viking book.
Fan Cast: Briana "Bree" O'Toole - Amybeth McNulty Devin O'Toole - Art Parkinson Mikkel - Ty Simpkins Hauk - Shawn Ashmore Nola - Susan Lynch

For the book recommendation thing: I want to sing a song worth singing / I'll write an anthem worth repeating / I want to feel the transformation / A melody of reformation
Thank you for sending in this ask and for your patience in waiting; my apologies for the delay in responding! In a disconcerting trend, I also had an immediate impression of the sort of story that would fit these lines but, unfortunately, I haven't read it either. After a period of consideration, bearing in mind the themes of growth and purpose, I have two recommendations for you: The first is The Riverboat Adventures by Lois Walfrid Johnson (apparently now known as The Freedom Seekers). This series was a favourite of mine (and my sisters) growing up, though I'm not sure how the writing quality would stand up now. Regardless, the series takes place shortly before the American Civil War and focuses on the pre-teenage/teenage daughter of a riverboat captain who becomes involved with the Underground Railroad. Through the people she meets, she learns what it means to believe in something and how to do what is right, no matter the consequences. The second is Light a Single Candle by Beverly Butler. The story follows a teenage girl who loses her vision and has to make the decision again and again whether it's better to wallow in her grief and accept others' ideas of her limitations or to learn how to navigate her new life and pursue new dreams. (This book also has a two-generation recommendation in the family, for what that's worth.)
#isfjmel-phleg#Not that the others were easy but this one was really hard#I don't feel like either of these are immediately up your alley but maybe one of them might interest you anyhow?#I also thought about providing a WWII book recommendation but thought that might a bit much unsolicited#Lois Walfrid Johnson#The Riverboat Adventures#Beverly Butler#Light a Single Candle

Late at night, as the Christina puts out into the Mississippi River, Caleb and Libby keep watch on deck. Close by, the runaway slave, Jordan, creeps forward without a sound. Drawing near the lantern, he stops, as if afraid to enter the circle of light. On the streets above them no one stirs. Then a dark shape steps from the shadows. Jordan moans. "It's Riggs!" (The slave-trader.) The cruelest man Caleb knows. Jordan's owner stepping out, so they know he's on their trail. From that moment the Freedom Seekers can never forget that because of a fugitive slave law Jordan can be taken back into slavery, even from a free northern state. Nor can they forget that if Captain Norstad is caught hiding a fugitive he can lose the Christina. Then Elsa, a new-found immigrant friend, faces illness and possible death. Will Libby's need for courage bring her to the Lord who promises, "Do not fear, for I am with you"? Can the Freedom Seekers live the courage that offers life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness to every person? Can they go beyond fear to put that courage into practice? As steamboats race for St. Paul, stakes are high. To escape capture, Jordan makes a mighty leap. In a time when captains did not stop for a man overboard, will Jordan survive his fall into icy waters?

Hi, this is super random and not related to any ask game you've posted about, but I just reread this book series from my childhood and wondered if you might've ever read it too? It's the Adventures in the Northwoods series by Lois Walfrid Johnson. If you've read them, please share all your thoughts??
I'm honestly not sure. When I got this ask, my jaw dropped, because one of the obscure series I was into in elementary school was a collection of mysteries about a brother and a sister in the Northwoods, and what were the chances that you could possibly know this? But as I'm looking at the book covers and summaries, they don't seem quite like what I remember of that series. It's possible that my library had a different edition or something, or that my brain has just blocked out all but the most basic details of the premise and vibes. But it's just possible that there are two different Christian mystery series with a similar premise. I don't remember enough about the books to say for sure, unfortunately.

A Tag Thing? Idk.
So, I was tagged to do this by @psalm51 and I've got no idea what I'm doing, so please be patient with me. :) 1. How tall are you? 5'4" ish... 2. Hair color and style? Dark brown, long, and constantly tangly. 3. Eye color? Grey-blue or blue-gray, depending on several factors. 4. Do you wear glasses? No 5. Do you have braces? Used to. 6. What is your fashion sense? Depends on the weather, but jeans and a t-shirt are always an option for me. I also love long tunic-type shirts and sweaters etc. over leggings with boots. Makes me feel like a book character. :) 7. Siblings? Yes: two younger (but taller) brothers and a little sister. 8. What kind of student are you? I'm a good one, I hope. I try anyway. 9. Favorite subjects? English (literature and writing) and philosophy. 10. Favorite tv shows? Walker, Texas Ranger; Avatar, the Last Airbender; Young Justice; Doctor Who; Star Wars, the Clone Wars (I'm sure there are others, but my mind is going blank...) 11. Favorite books? This question gets me every time. Um, the Code of Silence trilogy; the Harry Potter series; Outlaws of Sherwood; The Book Thief; An Old-Fashioned Girl; The Sherwood Ring; Swallows and Amazons; anything by Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, or Lois Walfrid Johnson. 12. Favorite pastime? Reading good stories, attempting to write stories, hiking while thinking about stories, and attempting to write poetry. 13. Any regrets? Idk. Maybe? Mostly a lot of little things that I'm thinking "I should not have said/done that." 14. What's your dream job? I'm pretty good where I'm at right now. I babysit quite often, and I also work as a tutor which is great because I like helping people. But I'd eventually like to own a small bookstore someday. Yeah... 15. Do you want to get married? Yes. Not very likely, but yes. 16. Do you want kids, and if so how many? Yes again. I would especially love to adopt kids someday... 17. What countries have you visited? None yet. I want to go to Europe so bad though. So, there you go. Do I have to tag more people? I really don't know anybody...

Books that I remember most from childhood.
The Adventures of the Northwoods series by Lois Walfrid Johnson. I remember my elementary school only had books 1-5, and the kind librarian, Mrs. Adams, ordered the remaining five just for me. I loved these books and they fueled my desire to read that much more.
Again, they had a Christian theme, but that's okay. My little shipper heart started beating for Kate and Erik, and that's basically how that all began. I wrote my first fan fiction (seriously true) about Kate and Erik's first kiss. It was two pages long and I was tickled to death to create my own story..even if it wasn't my own story.

"I want a never-give-up family," Libby Norstad tells her widowed father, captain of the steamboat Christina. "I want a family that believes in me, even when I'm not perfect. A family that sticks together, even though it's hard." "We can be that family for each other," Pa promises. "And Caleb and the other people who work on the Christina will be our larger family." But Libby has lived with a wealthy aunt since her mother died and discovers a different world. In 1857, when rivers were the highways of the time, Libby, her father, and their friends face life-and-death questions still crucial today: Who can I trust? What does it mean to put my faith in God? To live my belief in the freedoms sought in the Declaration of Independence? And how can I help others, even at great cost? Soon Libby discovers the secret work of 14-year-old Caleb, a conductor in the Underground Railroad. Next, a fugitive slave named Jordan takes refuge on the Christina. Then another family, Emma and little Henry, pushes toward a choice. Will her journey to compassion help her become a Freedom Seeker? From the golden age of steamboats, the rush of immigrants to new land, and the dangers of the Underground Railroad come true-to-life stories of courage, integrity, and suspense. In Escape into the Night, the first Freedom Seekers novel, as well as others in the 1857 series, Lois Walfrid Johnson uses strong historical interest to bring alive a critical time in American history.
