A hits ratio is absolutely the WORST possible way you can judge. Hits don't mean "unique erson who read the fic", they mean "times an entity has accessed the link" (with certain limits like you won't give a hit each time you refresh a page in a 5 minute period).
Things that cause a hit to generate:
●Individual people who clicked the fic to check it out
●A bot clicking links (can be malicious or can be "indexing sites for a search engine like google)
●People coming back to re-read a fic after a while
●People coming to read each chapter as a multichap updates
●People refreshing their page once the timelimit on giving hits expires
●People switching to a different device on a different network
A kudo can only be left once per logged-in account, and guest kudos can't easily be left in rapid succession (though it is possible). This means if somebody provides 20 hits by re-reading and/or by reading each chapter as they're released, they'll still most likely only provide 1 kudos which leaves a 20:1 ratio for a SINGLE PERSON.
Kudos also are a crappy method to use to judge because of the fact that you can only easily give one per account even if you read every chapter repeatedly, but conversely one person can give several depending on how many devices and accounts they have access to and if a fic is open for non-users to view. (This also is how people game kudos by using alternate devices to give themselves guest kudos to keep their fic at the top of the kudos sort because they're petty losers, I've seen people do this lol.) So people who only read fic logged in aren't likely logging out to give gues kudos on every fic they read and hopping devices and networks to give a guest kudos to every chapter as well. So that's a poor means to tell if a fic is good.
Plus, there's the fact that things that are good aren't always popular and things that are popular aren't always good. Or they're not to your taste even if they're not bad.
I just use tags and summaries to tell if a fic is worth checking, and I use the include/exclude filters to narrow it down to what I want to look at. I sort by newest updated and work backwards from there.
Another AO3 thing I’m curious about, how do yall decide if something is good enough to read? Usually I follow a rule of 1 kudos for every 10 hits. One because it’s easy math and two it’s yet to fail me. Thoughts? Do you just go for it and pray it’s good?

writers tag game
got tagged by @noire-pandora and i was going to do this yesterday but SURPRISE SURPRISE I FORGOT LMAO
1.How many works do you have on AO3?
uh *mumbles* two hundred and thirty-seven ... (though seriously considering taking one of them down at least for a little while to sort out what i want to rewrite and also the tags)
2.What’s your total AO3 word count?
1,373,295 (eep!)
3.What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
groove is in the heart - 551
it's always been you - 373
wrong number (or "what happens when you accidentally send your boss a dick pic") - 327
angel, interrupted - 321
sudden realisations - 305
(it is no surprise to me that these are all in the supernatural fandom and all but one is destiel asdfghjkl)
4.Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
i always do! i don't always get back to them right away but i always want to let a commenter know that their comment is appreciated because it issssssssss <3
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
i would have said too heavy, a fic where anders mourns his lover hawke that was left in the fade, but i'm actually planning a sequel that will make it happier, so technically it won't really be ... i'd therefore say where fate led them, because two lovers breaking up is one thing, but breaking up by one person blowing up the other's airship and then ending up in a quickdraw duel with them where one kills the other is a whole other level.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
i don't really count my one-shots because the smutty ones naturally have a happy ending of sorts (hurr hurr hurr) but of my multi-chapter fics ... i'd probably say dark legacy. marane loses some of her brotherhood brethren but she exacts vengeance for them in the dread father's name, kills the emperor of cyrodiil (and gets all the fame and notoriety that goes along with that), gets a whole new sanctuary, and basically gets to rebuild the dark brotherhood from the ground up in the night mother's image. plus a new lover in the form of cicero. is there anything else a good listener needs?
Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?
do modern characters in fandom worlds count? lol if not then no, i don't think i have yet. yet being the operative word, because i do have things planned. but i have a lot of things planned, so.
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
i did once, but it wasn't really bad and i'm not sure i would classify it as hate. basically someone read part two of a series and lamented certain things in that story that are also present in the first story and are just clearly a part of the series aesthetic. i get it, it's not for everyone. not sure why they felt the need to read 160k of posted work before saying so, but to each their own. i do think i circumvent hate comments by requiring folks to be signed in to leave one. i'm sure i probably miss out on comments by guests, but for my mental health's sake, i'd rather leave it to logged in users only. put your money where your mouth is ... or, in this case, your account.
Do you write smut? If so what kind?
oh yes, i write quite a lot of it, too, and in a good variety! from vanilla to kinky to even dangerous (and appropriately tagged).
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
not that i'm aware of, thankfully
Have you ever had a fic translated?
not that i've been told, at least lol
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
no, though a friend of mine have gone back and forth with a dao canon divergence. both of us are just at different points in our writing right now, though, so who knows if/when it will see the light of day. i don't usually co-write, though, because my writing muse is so finicky, it's not really dependable.
What’s your all-time favorite ship?
i don't think i could choose, don't make me!
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
honestly, at this point, it's unfortunately one i felt very passionate about: angel, interrupted. i had started slowly writing it and building up this au when the poor quality of the show just began wearing on me and the fandom in general wore on me even further until i've ... kinda just fallen out of love with it. :/ i don't hate it, not at all, i guess i just need more time and separation from the bullshit. at least i hope that'll help. i truly do want to finish it, i just feel absolutely no drive to do so right now.
What are your writing strengths?
angst, definitely lol
What are your writing weaknesses?
dialogue and certain characters
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
i think it's cool and i like to incorporate it when i can. i am kinda leery and cautious when i don't actually know the language well, myself, tho. i don't wanna muck it up lol.
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
in general? star wars. that i posted on ao3? harry potter.
What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
it feels like i keep harping on this one lol but the path we choose is just one i'm so, so proud of. the examination of guilt and regret in the form of a one-shot set against the mojave, with the courier discussing their issues and joshua graham offering support and comfort. one of my friends called joshua (in this fic) a shepard rather than a hand of vengeance, and i really do like writing him that way. plus zelda needs all the help she can get lol and really, we all do.
i tag @dreadfutures, @warpedlegacy, and @dumbassentity! if you were tagged before, sorry :P and no pressure if you don't wanna partake. and if anyone wants to do this, consider this your tag!

3, 18, A, K 😁😁😁
3. Do you have any abandoned works?
Kind of, I have a few that I have tagged as unfinished or WIPs on my Ao3. I have deleted all unposted drafts that I didn't finish.
18. Favorite kinds of comments?
Comments. Period. That is it. Comments of any kind. Well, I get the biggest thrill out of those that are actually left on the ao3 comment box of said fic, new number on the inbox or a notification e-mail is such a nice surprise, the burst of joy is one of a kind. But nice messages or asks are super nice too.
A) Ever tried to leave kudos twice?
Yes! So often. And you didn't ask but I have managed too. If I read a fic I want to kudos without logging in on ao3, I'll leave guest kudos but come back to leave kudos on my own profile too :) If I'm logged on already I won't log out to leave guest kudos tho, lol
K) Do you listen to podfic?
Yes I do. Not regularly but there are periods when I'll listen to multiple podfics in a row, like doing yardwork or such.
Thanks for the ask!
(ask game)

Remember that post that went around saying ‘click-spam the kudos button to leave multiple kudos!’ that went viral?
And remember how I was like ‘guys this is bullshit and when AO3 eventually clears them out because it’s a BUG, authors are going to lose kudos.’
Well. AO3′s cleared them out. And I’ve lost a bunch of kudos. : ) A lot of other authors have lost kudos too.
Please stop click-spamming the kudos button to see your name come up multiple times. Multiple kudos on one fic from the same person is a lie, and you’re just hurting us in the end. Leave a comment that says ‘kudos’ if you liked the fic that much after the first kudos that you wish you could leave another (or comment, or rec the fic, or send the person an ask, or read their other fics, or finally - you can log out of your account and give another kudos anonymously as a guest lol).

🕵🏾🤢🤣
🕵🏾 Do you ever comment/kudos as a guest, even if you have an account?
Specifically on AO3, i usually comment and leave a kudos with my account, but i think i left a few kudos while being logged off. When kudos and logged comments weren’t a thing yet i used to leave lots of comments, at least on the italian fanfic site where i started to read them (and then posted my works).🤢 Who is your NoTP?Dangan Ronpa: Nae/gami, Tou/komaru.Ranma: Ranma/any of the other girls or guys (even tho RanrRyo makes me laugh a lot and has more sense that other fanon ships)Tekken: Jina, Xiaorest, and in general any ship where Jin isn’t with Xiao (and ofc the opposite).🤣 Has a fic ever made your face hurt from laughing so much?I have mentioned it in a previous ask but, despite the title, Akane the suicidal (Ranma) was one of the funniest thing i’ve ever read. Also a lot of the stuff my buddy wrote is great (and some of our round robins too, he brings my humor out of me lol). And omg, some of @pinlc-candy ‘s one shots. Togami and the “friend with benefits” thing. I can’t.Thank you so much! The ask.

For that fic ask thing; 1 & 4
1: are there any fics that you wanted to leave multiple kudos for, and were disappointed when you could only leave one?
like, all of them! but logging out and leaving kudos as a guest helps lol
also, not so secret tip: opening the incognito tab can allow you to leave another kudos.
4: has a fic ever made you cry?
while actually reading the fic? not... really, but then i rarely cry nowadays. however, sometimes a song or show or something may remind me of a fic and i might tear up, or just when i’m thinking about it after - usually if i’m on my period rofl.
(ask me fic questions!)

Guest Comments/Reviews
I would like to take a moment to thank any Guest or Anon reviews/comments that were ever left on any of my stories, whether it was from anxiety of interaction, or the comfort of anonymity, or even because you just forgot to log in and didn’t want to go through the hassle once you were reviewing, lol (we’ve all been there).
Though it may take me some time because I’m a chronic procrastinator, I do respond to every single review/comment I ever get.  Ever.  Because I want you to know how much it means to me that you took the time to leave your thoughts with me, whether they be good or bad.  You sharing your feelings on my work is just as important to me as me sharing the work itself.  It’s kind of the point of fandom, you know, that sharing, that community - loving characters and worlds and ideas together, and not in a vacuum.
So since I cannot message and thank you directly, here it is.
Thank you, Guest.  I’m happy if my story touched you in any way, and your support is greatly appreciated, please know that.  Yes, we writers write for ourselves, but we share it for you,and for that sense of community that comes from interaction in fandom.  We’re all here because we love something enough to seek out others who love it, too.  And that’s beautiful to me.  Your reviews and comments and even kudos, are beautiful to me.  They keep me writing.
You are not forgotten, Guest.  Never will be.
