We clean up nicely, don't we? Last time the @orellanabros were at the Loews Theatre, we had been turned into monsters by @sarahfrancavilla (Broomhilda, pictured above on the left), and @stephalbarracin (Augustus Van Orton, right). But now for the Golden Door International Film Festival opening gala last night, we made sure we were bien chainiaditos. @cgorellana210 #orellanabros #stephaniealbarracin #sarahfrancavilla #jerseycity #LoewsTheatre

The magical cinema palace near Manhattan. Spirit of 20s.
When I rented a room in Jercey City, NJ, about 20 min from Manhattan, New York, I was ready to live in a boring neighbourhood with nothing spectacular exept Dunkin Donats and a couple of Laundries around.
But later I found out that Jercey City is a place where the revival of American cinema culture and architecture is happening, where the art, history, architecture and cinema collide together, where "the dream of 20s" is still alive! The legendary Loew's Jersey Theatre, wich was built in 1929, stopped my eyes when I got off the train:

(photo from www.nj.com)
The building and a font of the Theatre Name looked very old-fashioned. So I googled it and ... here we see good old days! Elegant men and women with hats, old cars and movie names! This is the entrance to the Loew's Jersey Theatre in 30s:

The building looks like a castle from the outside:

But if we look inside, its even more, its like European Opera Houses and palaces of European Monarchs in fusion:
Tumblr media
WOW! At this is just a place to watch movies! Where a rich Hollywood producer and a man from the laundry could entertain themselves exactly the same, :
"The reason the Hollywood studios built the Movie Palaces was ... that the theatre building itself should be so spectacular as to become essentially the opening act for the show on the stage or screen, and that together Movie Palace and show would make an uplifting and unforgettable experience." (taken from www.loewsjersey.org)
"Built at what was then the impressive sum of $2 million dollars, the Loew’s was accurately called as “the most lavish temple of entertainment in New Jersey”. It was also one of the state’s biggest theatres, with just under 3,100 seats. And the Loew’s was also one of the best equipped theatres of its day." (taken from www.loewsjersey.org)
Tumblr media
 (from http://www.loewsjersey.org/)
"The years after World War II brought changing times and economics to the movie business. By the late 1950s, barely 30 years after they had been built, Movie Palaces were being closed. In the coming years, hundreds of Palaces that were once the pride and joy for their communities had become forlorn, decaying hulks, or worse, were torn down."
But the Theatre on Journal Square survived through 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, especially in 90s some volunteers had to make a big effort to protect the cinema from demolishing:
"Thousands of people signed our petition asking that the Theatre be saved.... But far more than just creating a sense of nostalgia, - they write on the official website, - we made people understand that the Theatre could be an important economic and cultural resource to benefit Journal Square and the whole region in the future.'
This is how it looks today inside:
Tumblr media
From one side the Theatre was kept as a theatre, no business center was made out of it. But I was sad to know that they don't have much events and premiers happening there today. Well, Jercey City has changed and not so many people are really into 20s cinema palace experience. The last movie was anounced here in December 2012 and it was ... "Edward Scissorhands"! Yes, these guys definetly know what the good cinema is!!!
In January 2013 no events yet have been scheduled. Well, Theatre needs donations, so you can donate through this website:
http://www.loewsjersey.org/
There is a group of artists in New York who are passionatly interested in the idea of the revival of "theatres the like of which no one had ever seen before".
I will tell you about their project next time!
