Have you had any of the delicious wines from Markus Winery in Lodi? I cracked open this gem with dinner. This is his “Blue” - 90% Zin, 5% Petite Verdot and 5% Petite Syrah. Just a delicious wine. This is not a jammy Zin, although the fruit notes are bold. There is plenty of spice and earth here as well. This 2017 Rosé of Grenache from Lodi’s Acquiesce Winery is a fantastic wine. Sue Tipton, the winemaker, only produces Rosé and white wines in the heart of Zinfandel country. She brings a nice California touch to classic Rhône varietals. In my last post I featured a Top 5 Lodi winery. Here’s another. Fields Family is definitely top 5 and this 2013 Shiraz (made from vines grafted with clippings brought from Australia) is killer good. This wine will drink well for a really long time. Classic Syrah aromas and flavor. We made some grilled lamb chops and I needed a wine with enough heft to stand up to these beauties. Easy choice - Markus “Blue” from @markuswineco in Lodi. This big, bold ballsy wine - 90% Zin - is 16.5% of unapologetic alcohol and almost a meal in itself. A smooth wine for that much abv - nice use of oak but not overdone. We checked out some new wineries in Lodi this past weekend including Harney Lane, where the 5th generation of Harney’s uphold the family farming tradition. We had a fabulous tour and tasting with Kyle. Some very good wines from Harney Lane! Our favorite was the Primitivo made from grapes from 2014, 2015 and 2016 harvests. We enjoyed a 2-hour tasting and talking session with Markus Niggli of Markus Wine Company. We loved our time with Markus, clearly one of the most interesting personalities in wine. Honest, opinionated, driven, committed to making genuine wines. . . . . We tasted 4 whites and 5 reds and found them all to be high quality wines. Beyond that, though, Markus’ wines were incredibly inventive and unique. The Rose pictured was a blend of Syrah and Carignane - definitely our first pink wine from these two grapes. . . . . As you can see from the second picture, Markus makes a white wine whose principal ingredient is the Kerner grape. The vineyard Markus sources Kerner from in Lodi is the only Kerner vineyard in the entire state of California.
