I think it's so funny that these books came on the tale end of the extremely lucrative grim dystopian love triangle YA trend and are technically dystopian but so British stuff upper lip keep calm and carry on about it you don't even notice the extent of the dystopia half the time, and they do have characters who in theory could have slotted into the false romantic lead role but it just never happens and it's so obvious that Lucy only ever has it in for Lockwood and vice versa and the entire romantic tension comes not from "who will she choose?" but "will these emotionally repressed traumatized crazy kids even realize they're in love in the first place before they kill themselves trying to save each other?"

I refuse to believe that Lucy and Lockwood actually know they are in love with each other. They are too emotionally repressed to know.

Lucy fell for Lockwood the moment she met him. She fell so fast that she doesn’t realise that she is in love. She just thinks that that’s what everyone feels about Lockwood.

Lockwood fell so slowly that he didn’t realise it. It was the type of love that comes so naturally through time that you don’t know what it is until it’s too late.
