This Project was really enjoyable. I consider myself a food lover, so for this project I incorporated my love for food with my mexican heritage. I collected family recipes, cooked them and photograph them. It was a lot of work but really satisfying to see the outcome at the end.

Locating Place: Book
The locating place project was a way to explore a part of Austin and take away a part of that particular neighborhood and then creating a book to document this connection. The neighborhood that was explored was the Cesar Chavez community. After walking through the neighborhood, taking photographs, and learning more about the places that make up this vibrant area of Austin, TX.
The two things I took away from my time spent in Cesar Chavez was the mystery and the history that many of the old building structures hold. In order to show this through book design, I decided to write my own mystery book that encompassed the true history and importance of some of the buildings in the neighborhood. I also wanted to teach the reader about the bad side of gentrification because this is actually starting to happen on the East Side of Austin where Cesar Chavez is located.
I decided to do this through using photographs and hand-drawn illustrations that I vectorized in Illustrator and colored in Photoshop. The photographs were utilized to show actual structures in the neighborhood and the illustrations were used for the fictional characters in the story. This contrast in artwork in the book emphasized the difference between fiction and non-fiction.
I learned a lot about using a grid system and finding a balance between typography and artwork. I also realized that I really enjoy illustrating and learned the process of turning hand-drawn illustrations into vectorized pieces of art.

These are screen shots of my motion piece titled East side Type for the Locating Place project. The idea is to display some unique type that is found on the East Side, connecting the pieces through motion and through the flashing of the lights. All pieces were carefully recreated in illustrator.

East Austin Motion Project
This project was meant to capture the same qualities of East Austin that I focused on in my book—deterioration and rundown objects. I wanted to transition from clean "blueprint-like" line drawings of buildings and objects into their current deteriorated condition. This was slightly over-ambitious because each and every line you see moves independently. With more time I'd like to polish this off further.

Locating Place Motion (West Campus)
This video was made for a project in my Graphic Design course. It focused on locating place. The place i chose was West Campus at the University of Texas at Austin. Even though motion work is tough for me i am happy with my end result. I feel as though i depicted the things i wanted to in West Campus. The color and diversity is what i focused on. I love all the imagery that you experience the whole time.

Locating Place
This video is an advertisement of sorts for the Locating Place book I created. The idea of belonging and home is carried over into this motion piece, as well as one of the songs I included in the book itself. This was created before the book was so there are some stylistic discrepancies between the two.

Locating Place: Book
For the second part of our locating place project pertaining to east Austin, we were to design a book that explored a theme related to our work in the east Cesar Chavez neighborhood. The purpose of this project was to gain a deeper insight of creating an original experience for the reader while relating to the east Austin neighborhoods.
To create an experience beyond reading, I decided to continue with my concept of Mexican culture and heritage. I designed a book to focus on Mexican folklore. The book features the most popular tales and superstitions rooted in Mexico’s culture, which have been passed on from generation to generation and have entered the homes of east Austin neighborhoods. The book features six short tales and seven superstitions. Each tale and superstition has been matched with vectorized images of the photography that the class took during our visual research in east Austin. Images were modified to better interpret the story, as needed.
The book is perfect bound with a black dust jacket and inner red end papers. It measures 5 ½ inches by 8 inches. Typefaces used include Adobe Garamond and Century Gothic.

In the second part of the locating place project, I created a book with the street art theme. I used cut-outs in certain spreads to highlight the typefaces. I designed and learned the technique to bind this book.

Making GIF's was a quick exercise to find out what we where interested in on East Riverside. I first started following a party theme since there are a lot of party supply stores around there. But while making this GIF's I realized I was more interested on food since two out of my 3 GIF's related to that. I then started thinking about how my Mexican roots could relate to East Riverside. Therefore My book became a Mexican Recipe Book.

Locating Place Book (College Kids VS The Elements)
I made this book for a project that was based on locating place. This book was based on West Campus partying and the effects it has on the surroundings. I first started by researching the actual location taking many of the photos that appear throughout the book. I then interviewed residents about their desire to move to West Campus and their experiences since living there. I love the work i did with typography here. I think i stepped outside my comfort level here and really designed something i'm proud of.
