MY GIRLS ARE FINALLY ON AIR
Disclaimer: not a native Thai speaker, still learning 🙏
Ongsa and Sun
At first, Ongsa wrongly assumes that Sun is older so she calls her พี่ /phi/, speaks respectfully and wais her:
ขอโทษค่ะพี่ /khaaw thoht kha, phi/
Then they settle into these pronouns:
☀ Sun: เรา /rao/ -> Ongsa (calls her เธอ /ter/ once when she asks her name)
🌐 Ongsa: เรา /rao/ -> Sun
-> เรา /rao/ is an informal 1st pers. pronoun that pretty much all the students in Ongsa's class seem to use
Later, when they're texting, it takes Ongsa entirely too long to catch onto the fact that Sun thinks Earth is a guy because-
คุยกันมาตั้งนาน เรายังไม่รู้เลยว่านายชื่ออะไร /khui gan maa dtang naan. rao yang mai ruu loei waa naai cheuu a rai/ -> นาย /naai/ is a male 2nd pers. pronoun
While we're talking about their texts, the subs have this weirdly mixed up:
1 - ฝันดีนะ /fan dee na/ = lit. dream well/good dreams, 'Sweet dreams' 2 - ราตรีสวัสดิ์ /raa dtree sa wat/ = formal, 'Good night' 3 - Similarly, Sun's มอนิ่งนะ /morning na/ is a more informal 'Good morning' compared to formal อรุณสวัสดิ์ /a roon sa wat/ or polite สวัสดีตอนเช้า /sa wat dee dtaawn chaao/
When Ongsa isn't gay-panic hiccupping, she's actually really clever and witty! I'll get to her ig posts in a second but there's also this moment:
ยังสวยอยู่เลย /yang suay yuu loei/ สวยจะ หมายถึง ซวยอ่ะ /suay ja- maai theung- suay a/
The difference in pronunciation between these two words is just the tone - สวย /suay/ (rising tone) means pretty vs. ซวย /suay/ (middle tone) means unlucky
from.the.earth__
ถ่ายรูป ด่วน สี-ขาวดำ /thaai ruup duaan see khaao dam/ = urgent/express black-and-white photography caption: ยกกล้องมาถ่ายแทบไม่ทัน /yohk glaawng maa thaai thaaep mai than/ = almost didn't raise the camera in time to snap this
caption: เงา-เหงา /ngao-ngao/ = shadow-lonely -> เงา ๆ /ngao ngao/ is an expression that means indistinctly, faintly
The difference in pronunciation is, again, in the tones - เงา /ngao/ (middle tone) means shadow vs. เหงา /ngao/ (rising tone) means lonely
caption: ว้าว! ปลาทับใจจัง /wow! bplaa thap jai jang/
I love this SO much omg It's a pun on ประทับใจ /bpra thap jai/ = impressed, but also a visual pun!!
ปลา /bplaa/ = fish + ทับ /thap/ = placed on top of + ใจ /jai/ = heart
caption: สู้ ๆ นะ เป็นกำลังใจให้ /su su na. bpen gam lang jai hai/ = Fighting! Rooting for/encouraging [you]!
Another visual pun! This one's only funny if you know what peaches are called in Thai: peach = ลูกท้อ /luuk thaaw/ - but the word ท้อ /thaaw/ in there? It means discouraged!
Alpha, Aylin, and Luna
🔝 Alpha is Ongsa's older sister: พี่ /phi/ (used as a 1st pers. pronoun) -> แก /gae/ (informal 2nd pers. pronoun)
👽 Aylin is their cousin, in the same grade as Ongsa, and speaks pretty curtly, almost like someone would on two-way radio: she doesn't use any pronouns apart from this once-
แกกำลังบุกรุกที่ของฉัน /gae gam lang book rook thee khaawng chan/
Omitting pronouns is possible and not uncommon in Thai but doing so constantly, combined with her monotone speech pattern, low voice, and mostly a lack of ending particles, it does stick out! It doesn't really come across in the subs tbh (apart from including the way she refers to people as humans = มนุษย์ /ma noot/):
ไม่ต้องแครใคร /mai dtaawng care khrai/ = Don't need to care about anyone.
🌙 Luna, Alpha, the two bullies, and Mawin all seem to be in the same grade because all of them use the impolite pronouns กู/มึง /guu, meung/ (=I/you) amongst each other - how very fun to finally hear some GMMTV girls talk like this :D
I love Alpha and Luna teaming up to beat up scold these two dipshits:
Alpha: พวกมึงสองคนแกล้งน้องกูออ /phuuak meung saawng khohn glaaeng nong guu aaw/ Mawin, trying to defuse: พวกเธอใจเย็นก่อน /phuuak ter jai yen gaawn/
While the girls are furious, the guys are clearly fearing for their lives, wai'ing endlessly 😂
Lastly-
Sarah Salola
I gasped when I saw her name in the credits!! She's this handsome singer-songwriter with a lovely voice who's queer herself - she's talked about her sexuality and style before (interview is in Thai) but this Valentine's she revealed her partner :)
Here's a cover of Nont Tanont's รักแรก (First Love) she did with Jan 💕
youtube
Needless to say, I can't wait for her OST and the accompanying MV that's surely gonna be super cute!

The Fixed Stars 🌌
แก๊งดาวฤกษ์ /gang daao reerk/ = the star gang
ดาวฤกษ์ /daao reerk/ = astronomical term for a (fixed) star, the one closest to us is the Sun
ฤกษ์ /reerk/ = auspicious time
Haplessness
ซวย /suuay/ = unlucky, comes up a lot this episode! It's the same word Ongsa changes her half-delirious 'pretty' (สวย /suuay/) to in ep. 1 when she faints (explained here)
Ongsa's IG post
caption: ลุงกำพร้า น่าสงสาร /loong gam phraa. naa song saan/ = The uncle is grasping a knife/the uncle is orphaned. So pitiable!
-> pun on กำพร้า /gam phraa/ = orphan
-> กำ /gam/ = grasp, clench + พร้า /phraa/ = a large knife
Misc. pronouns and stuff
Tin, Charoen, and Ongsa
Ongsa เรา /rao/, Tin ฉัน /chan/ , Charoen uses her own name as a 1st pers. pronoun
Tin and Charoen use มึง /meung/ with each other but แก /gae/ with Ongsa (they're both familiar pronouns but the latter isn't as impolite), Ongsa uses แก /gae/ with both of them
Ton
whenever he's talking to girls, he uses typically-female polite ending particles ค่ะ/คะ /kha/ -> makes him sound like a playboy/a bit sleazy lol
maybe it's just AJ's delivery of some of these instances but, considering he's Ongsa's ex and Ongsa is a lesbian, there's a possibility he's actually a closeted gay
Ongsa and Alpha
Ongsa: หนู /nuu/ ->พี่ /phi/ + polite ending particles ค่ะ/คะ /kha/
Alpha: พี่ /phi/->แก /gae/
Nida and Bambam
ฉัน /chan/->ครู /kruu/ (title for teacher) or คุณ /khun/ (polite formal 2nd pers. pronoun) + polite ending particles ค่ะ/คะ /kha/
Luna and Aylin
Luna: พี่ /phi/->น้อง /nong/ or Aylin
Aylin: no pronouns and no polite ending particles In contrast- Ongsa and Sun use หนู /nuu/ and ค่ะ/คะ /kha/ whenever they're talking to anyone older, like Luna or the teachers
Luna's little speech to Aylin:
เพราะว่าพี่ก็เชื่อเหมือนกัน ว่าเราไม่ได้โดดเดี่ยวอยู่ในจักรวาล /phraw waa phi gaaw cheuua meuuan gan waa rao mai dai doht diao yuu nai jak gra waan/ = because I also believe that we aren't all alone in the universe. -> โดดเดี่ยว /doht diao/ = solitary, lonely, isolated
สำรวจอวกาศคนเดียวอ่ะ เหงาจะตาย ไปสำรวจด้วยกันมั้ย /sam ruuat a waa gaat khohn diao a- ngao ja dtaai. bpai sam ruuat duay gan mai/ = Exploring all by yourself- that's super lonely. Shall we go explore together?
Books
Alpha is reading Hemingway's The Old Man and The Sea:
The book Aylin picked at the library also shows up as a prop in Ongsa's room later:

Lemme tell y'all, the truly wicked one is Sun!! A huge flirt and shamelessly shows off her girlfriend too, like- 🤭 we kissed actually teehee~~
1) แล้ววันนี้คุณแฟนอยากไปไหนคะ /laaeo wan nee khun faaen yaak bpai nai kha/ 2) เค้าเผลอ คุณแฟน /khao pluuhr, khun faaen/
calls Ongsa คุณแฟน /khun faaen/ = lit. Mrs./Miss Girlfriend (both คุณ /khun/ and แฟน /faaen/ are gender-neutral actually)
uses feminine polite ending particle คะ /kha/ to sound sweeter
calls herself เค้า /khao/ which is a really cutesy 1st person pronoun that's most often used with a romantic partner
And as per usual- Disclaimer: not a native Thai speaker, still learning 🙏

I loved this episode so much 🥹 might write up another post about the emotional core of it and why I think it's the best ep. 11 I've ever seen, considering how much people love to bemoan the 'episode 11 curse' (which I think is just setting yourself up for disappointment). But right now, I'm just here to clarify some of the Thai, as per usual~
Disclaimer: not a native Thai speaker, still learning 🙏
Taking advantage
Aylin: มนุษย์พี่นิสัยไม่ดี ฉวยโอกาส /ma noot phi ni sai mai dee. chuay oh gaat/ = [That's] bad behavior, human senior. Seizing the opportunity. Luna, after getting kissed: นี่มันฉวยโอกาสกันนี่ /nee man chuay oh gaat gan nee/ = This is seizing the opportunity!
ฉวยโอกาส /chuay oh gaat/ is not the same as 'taking advantage of sb.' aka exploiting sb./sth. It means to grab/take a chance or seize an opportunity when it presents itself. In that sense, it's more taking advantage of a situation.
Love
ตั้งใจเรียนนะน้อง รักนะ /dtang jai riian na, nong. rak na/ = Study attentively, nong. Love [you]! รักรักรัก รักๆๆๆๆ /rak x8/ = Love [you] x8 จากพระจันทร์ของน้อง <3 /jaak phra jan khaawng nong/ = from your Moon <3 -> พระจันทร์ /phra jan/ = the Moon
The Sun
สัญญานะ พระอาทิตย์ /san yaa na? phra aa tit/ = Promise? Sun? -> พระอาทิตย์ /phra aa thit/ = the Sun
#23.5 degrees#23.5 spoilers#aylinluna#ongsasun#thai gl#local woman harps on about linguistics#i never brought this up but last ep. aylin wai'd the monk and spoke politely and respectfully to him including pronouns and particles!#and this ep. she wai'd and greeted her phis politely and also called her relatives aunt and uncle (not 'human [...]')#she's really trying y'all :)#local woman harps on about 23.5

Names, particles, aliens and ghosts, oh my!
Disclaimer: not a native Thai speaker, still learning 🙏
Ongsa & Alpha
Last week's episode started with the trio talking about the sisters' names:
Nunnapat Ampornsopon /Nan-na-phat Am-phaawn-soh-phohn/ Matthayom 4, class 6 (=10th grade) English
While we see this, Tin tells us Alpha's name too:
Napatsanun Ampornsopon นภัสนันท์ อัมรโสภณ /Na-phat-sa-nan Am-phaawn-soh-phohn/
Her and Ongsa's first names have the exact same two words in them, just switcheroo'd:
นันท์ /nan/ = joy, happiness;
นภัส /na phat/ = sky, heaven
-> Quick pronunciation lesson: The final consonant in นภัส /na phat/ is called ส เสือ /saw seuua/ (= lit. S like the word for tiger) but in final position it's pronounced as a /t/. In Alpha's name, that same letter gets reduplicated to better link นภัส /na phat/ and นันท์ /nan/ so we get Napat-sa-nun!
Their last name Ampornsopon contains:
อัมพร /am phaawn/ = sky;
โสภณ /soh phohn/ = beautiful
Aylin
Her club application form was only shown in a Next Break preview last week, not the actual scene, but I wanted to take a look at it anyway:
Application to join the Astronomy Club Name: Aylin Kueaahree Grade: Matthayom 4, class 1 (=10th grade) Hobbies: Communicating with aliens Goal in joining the club: Searching for a friend/friends
Aylin is her first name, her last name is เกื้ออารีย์ /geuua aa ree/:
เกื้อ /geuua/ = to aid, do a favor, assist, lend a hand;
อารีย์ /ah ree/ = kind, generous
We saw her name properly this week, too, in the document she hilariously designed, wrote up, and filled out by hand:
Permit for spending the night at S-TAR school Subject: Asking for permission to stay the night at school for the duration of 1 night To: Counselling homeroom teacher I, (young Mr./young Miss/Mr./Miss) Aylin Keuaahree, ID number 406123, student of Matthayom 4/1, need to stay over at school ... on the date of the 24th of the month of August in the year of 2566 (2023) from 20.00 o'clock until 06.00 o'clock. Please kindly take it into consideration. Respectfully yours Aylin Keuaahree (Miss Aylin Keuaahree) Student
I've mentioned before that the subs are a bit too generous and don't quite show how much Aylin limits her speech to the minimum she needs to get her point across. One thing that consistently gets subbed is how she differentiates between aliens and humans. But not every instance of human is the same. She does seem to differentiate between general observations about human behavior and specific humans she talks to, now even addressing them appropriately (albeit with the 'human' descriptor).
1) มนุษย์ครูใจร้าย /ma noot khruu jai raai/ = [You] are mean, teacher human. 2) มันเป็นหนทางที่เอเลี่ยนจะได้เจอเพื่อนนะ /man bpen hon thaang thee alien ja dai juuhr pheuuan na/
มนุษย์ชอบถามแปลก ๆ /ma noot chaawp thaam bplaaek bplaaek/ = Humans like to ask weird questions.
1) มนุษย์พี่เคยบอกเอง ว่าเรื่องที่เชื่อไม่ใช่เรื่องที่ไร้สาระ /ma noot phi koei baawk ehng - waa reuuang thee cheuua mai chai reuuang thee rai saa ra/ = [You] said so [your]self, senior human - that what [I] believe in isn't nonsense. 2) ทำไมมนุษย์ชอบกลับคำพูด /tham mai ma noot chaawp glap kham phuut/ = Why do humans like to go back on their word?
Luna, Mawin, and Ton
Thanks again, Tin, for helpfully giving us all the names lol:
Luna Lalita Chanthaboriboon ลูน่า ลลิตา จันทบริบูรณ์ /Luu-naa La-lee-dtaa Jan-tha-baw-ree-buun/
Luna is her nickname, her first name Lalita ลลิตา means pretty, charming, lovely, and her last name จันทบริบูรณ์ contains:
จันท /jan tha/ from จันทร์ /jan/ = moon;
บริบูรณ์ /baw ree buun/ = complete, full, perfect, abundant
พี่เป็นดวงจันทร์ต่างหาก /phi bpen duuang jan dtaang haak/
Moving on to the boys-
Mawin Kow(a)charoen มาวิน โค้วเจริญ /Maa-win Khoh(-wa)-ja-reern/ -> the added 'wa' would be for the same ease-of-pronunciation reason I explained earlier with Alpha's name
Mawin isn't a Thai name but his last name โค้วเจริญ consists of:
โค้ว* likely from หมูโค้ว /moo khoh/? = a pork belly dish
เจริญ /ja reern/ = the same as Charoen's name, meaning to pray/chant, to prosper, to thrive
Edit, addition by @recentadultburnout:
Based on the usual pattern, the *โค้ว in the surname โค้วเจริญ is likely a Chinese surname that got incorporated into a Thai one. โค้ว is one of the top ten most used ones among Chinese surnames in Thailand. As for [his first name] มาวิน, while it was indeed not originally Thai, it did have a meaning—a borrowed word plus slang of sorts. A winner or to win.
Ton Thanakorn Khajornyoo ต้น ธนกร ขจรอยู่ /Dtohn Tha-na-gaawn Kha-jaawn-yuu/
His first name ธนกร /tha na gaawn/ = to create assets/capital; rich, wealthy
His nickname Ton ต้น might stem haha from the plant (ต้น)ขจร /(dtohn) kha jaawn/, a type of vine. ต้น /dtohn/ is a prefix used for plants but it can also mean leader, chief, leading, beginning, etc.
His last name ขจรอยู่ /kha jawn yuu/ = is spread/spreading, emanating, diffusing
An addendum about Ton
Last week, I wondered if maybe Ton was a closeted gay guy because of a handful of instances where AJ's delivery of the typically-female polite ending particles ค่ะ/คะ /kha/ sounded pretty sassy (and because he's Ongsa's ex aka the biggest lesbian under the sun lol). After episode three, I'm pretty sure he's just a huge flirt with everyone regardless of gender, he just adjusts his particle use (and also his height!) accordingly to sweet-talk them all:
1) ว่าไงครับสุดหล่อ /waa ngai khrap soot laaw/ -> ครับ /khrap/ = typically-male polite ending particle 2) แต่คุณแอลคะ /dtaae khun Al kha/ -> คะ /kha/ = typically-female polite ending particle
And since he finger-guns his way into the student council room, I think we all know now that he's bi
"Filth-eating spirit"
ใครจะไปล่าแสงกระสือกับพี่ต้นบ้างครับ /khrai ja bpai laa saaeng gra seuu gap phi Ton baang khrap/
If that sounds familiar to you, you either know your Thai ghosts or you've seen this or other movies like it:
Inhuman Kiss or แสงกระสือ /saaeng gra seuu/, starring Minnie Phantira, Oab Oabnithi and Great Sapol
A Krasue is a type of evil spirit that possesses women and, when going out to hunt, leaves the body behind to be a floating head with internal organs still attached. It's translated as 'filth-eating' because a Krasue is cursed to feed on blood, organs, carrion etc. Ton calls the mysterious green light แสงกระสือ /saaeng gra seuu/ (=light of a Krasue) because sightings of a Krasue usually report them looking like a floating red or green orb. In that regard, they're comparable to will-o'-the-wisps!

After a long absence, I've got lots to talk about so let's get right into ep. 7!
Disclaimer: not a native Thai speaker, still learning 🙏
The Overhead Sun
The title of this episode is ดวงอาทิตย์ตั้งฉาก /duaang aa thit dtang chaak/ = the Sun perpendicular/at a 90 degree angle/directly overhead
-> more on how the title ties into the episode in this previous post
Fairy Godmother Ton
I've mentioned before how sassily Ton talks so I'm delighted to see the subs try to reflect that and also to see him give Ongsa a makeover lol
Ongsa: หนูทำไม่ได้หรอกพี่ต้น /nuu tham mai dai raawk phi Ton/ Ton: แต่พี่ต้นทำได้ค่ะ /dtaae phi Ton tham dai kha/
Ton: ไปเปลี่ยนชุดค่ะ เดี๋ยวนี้ /bpai bpliian choot kha. diao nee/
Banana Tree Ghost
Mawin: ดีน่ะ ไม่แบกต้นกล้วยออกมาด้วย /dee na mai baaek dton gluay aawk maa duay/ = Good thing she didn't come out carrying a banana tree.
The นางตานี /naang dtaa nee/ is a type of female tree spirit akin to a nymph that inhabits a specific kind of banana tree called ต้นกล้วยตานี /dton gluay dtaa nee/.
Left: our dearest loser lesbian Right: a portrayal on the Ch8 show วิญญาณพิศวง /win yaan phit sa wong/ (= wonderous spirits) -> If you know Poom Phuripan, that's the show he made his acting debut in (link to the ep., unsubbed, on YT)
I'm fine. This is fine.
Sun: หนูปกติดี /nuu bpo ga dtee dee/ ; เราปกติดี(x2) /rao bpo ga dtee dee/ = I'm fine. or more like- I'm so normal. 🙂
Ongsa gets hit on
Tong: นอกจากพี่จะอยู่ฝ่ายโสตแล้วเนี่ย พี่ก็โสดด้วยน่ะ /naawk jaak phi ja yuu faai soht laaeo niia, phi gaaw soht duay na/ = Apart from being on the AV club, I'm also single.
The first โสต /soht/ is short for โสตทัศนศึกษา /soht that sa na seuk saa/ = audio-visual education, the second โสด /soht/ means single.
Love Guru
Luangpu: นี่เห็นหลวงปู่เป็นโยมพี่อ้อยพี่ฉอดไปซะแล้วหรือ /nee hen luaang bpuu bpen yohm phi Aoi phi Chod bpai sa laaeo reuu/ = Do you take me for Phi Aoi and Phi Chod or what? -> Luangpu หลวงปู่ is a title for an elderly revered monk
Phi Aoi (right) and Phi Chod (left) are the two hosts of the radio show Club Friday (streams here), and several similar shows and podcasts, where people can call in to ask for advice about their relationship problems.
You might be familiar with the anthology series Club Friday The Series, where real stories from the radio show get produced for TV. If you've seen Pit Babe or follow any of the actors, you might also know these ladies from bts clips or Change2561's Boys' Journey.

Disclaimer: not a native Thai speaker, still learning 🙏 ...also, not an expert on tarot and astrology btw djsdhsj
Fortune favors the bold
- XXI The World (-> Earth/Ongsa) = accomplishment, seizing opportunities the universe presents, confidence in one's place in the world - XIX The Sun (-> Sun) = joy, positivity, enlightenment, light illuminating the truth - X Wheel of Fortune = destiny, soulmates, change, growth, the wheel turning in one's favor
ก็เหมือนกับโลกที่มันต้องมีแสงสว่างจากพระอาทิตย์ไง /gaaw meuuan gap lohk thee man dtawng mee saaeng sa waang jaak phra aa thit ngai/ -> โลก /lohk/ = Earth, the world -> แสงสว่าง /saaeng sa waang/ = (bright/brilliant) light
And that's what she's been doing all episode 🥺♥ Sun's brightness and warmth give her confidence!
ชอบสิ /chaawp si/
AAAAAAAAHHHHH this can be read as both 'They/That person does like you' and 'I do like you'
ถึงดวงอาทิตย์ของเรา จากโลกของเธอ /theung duaang aa thit khaawng rao, jaak lohk khaawng ter/
Sun's horoscope
How is Sun a Gemini, you may ask? It's me, I asked, so I went and researched it for everyone lol
In astrology, there's two ways to divide the ecliptic into the 12 signs - tropical and sidereal.
(source)
Western astrology generally follows the tropical zodiac which is based on the Northern hemisphere's seasonal cycle, lining up the equinoxes and solstices with the ecliptic. Vedic/Hindu astrology follows the sidereal zodiac which is based on the observable sky and thus accounts for the Earth's axial precession and the seemingly backwards movement of fixed stars over time, caused by the Earth's axial tilt of ✨ 23.5 degrees ✨
All of this to say- Sun is a Gemini in sidereal astrology!
First contact
Aylin's coming out of her shell!! I loved her this episode, trying to make friends, expressing herself more and being genuinely funny.
มนุษย์พี่นี่โคตรไร้สาระ /ma noot phi nee khoht rai saa ra/ เมื่อกี้น้องว่าไงนะ /meuua gee nong waa ngai na/
-> ไร้สาระ /rai saa ra/ = nonsensical, lacking meaning/substance, which got subbed as "That's bull." earlier in the same scene??, combined with โคตร /khoht/ here, which is an impolite colloquial intensifier, sounds like "You're full of crap, senior human." lmao
1) ฉันกับยัยเจริญพรจะคอยช่วยแกแล้วกัน /chan gap yai Charoenporn ja khaawy chuuay gae laaeo gan/ 2) เจริญพร /ja reern phaawn/ = Yes.
2) Charoen's full first name is เจริญพร /ja reern phaawn/: เจริญ /ja reern/ = to prosper, prosperous, to pray/chant; พร /phaawn/ = blessing, benediction เจริญพร /ja reern phaawn/ is a word used by Buddhist monks for 'yes'/assent/response, just like ครับ /khrap/ or ค่ะ /kha/ are used, for example. There's a whole set of vocabulary/register that's specifically used by and with monks and in the context of Buddhism. 1) Tin calls Charoen ยัยเจริญพร /yai Charoenporn/ several times this episode lmao - ยัย /yai/ stems from ยาย /yaai/ = grandma, and can be used in a friendly way to call a woman or derogatorily (kinda like 'hag', I guess?) It's all in the context but that can be said about a lot of things in Thai language djsdhsjh It's comparable to colloquial ไอ้ /ai/, a prefix for mostly male names, e.g. ไอ้ติณห์ Ai'Tin, to call someone in a friendly or- cursing way:
ไอ้มนุษย์บุลลี่ /ai ma noot bully/
Obligatory 1st person pronoun moments because there's only the two three*, she doesn't use any otherwise:
1) เรา /rao/, 2) calls herself alien again, 3) ข้า /khaa/, which sounds old timey *edited to add her fortune teller shtick
Quick translation of the preview texts

i am confused about the relationships in 23.5 degrees and hopeful you can help! my understanding is that ongsa and alpha are sisters and aylin is their cousin? is that right? have they mentioned why alpha came to live with her cousin while her parents were in phuket with ongsa? where are aylin's parents? have i misunderstood something?
Hi there anon ✨️
I don't think you misunderstood anything, we've just not been told a whole lot yet. From everything I've seen, be it the actual show, the special bts episode, twt interactions etc. all I know is:
Alpha and Ongsa are sisters, in 12th and 10th grade respectively, and Aylin is their cousin, also in 10th grade.
We haven't been told where Aylin's parents are or why she's staying with her relatives in Bangkok. For all we know, she maybe even only has her mom left since the aunt is the only one who's been brought up definitively. From ep. 5, we know that she's been there for at least three years because Sun's known her since 7th grade.
Ongsa used to live in Phuket and only recently moved to Bangkok. I'm honestly not sure if she used to live there with both her parents or if her parents lived in Bangkok with the two other girls. In that case, I'd assume Ongsa stayed with her grandparents (or other relatives) while in Phuket.
Seeing as the dad seems to know more about Ongsa's difficulties in making friends than the mom, it's also possible that Ongsa used to stay with her dad in Phuket, for whatever reason, while Alpha and Aylin stayed with the mom in Bangkok.
I'm sure we'll find out more as the show progresses since family seems to be one of the plot points - at least judging from what I've seen about the original novel as well as from the bts special episode.
Hope this helped? 🥺

The Overhead Sun
The title of this episode is ดวงอาทิตย์ตั้งฉาก /duaang aa thit dtang chaak/ = the Sun perpendicular/at a 90 degree angle
1) When the Sun is directly overhead, at the subsolar point, the rays of the Sun hit the Earth perpendicular to its surface and cause the shadows of objects to fall directly under them or appear shadowless. In Thailand this phenomenon can be observed twice within a year, April-May and July-September (here's a map with dates for all 77 provinces for this year).
2) While the characters complain about the heat, we get to see Sun at an emotional zenith (thanks, gang, for pushing her until the jealousy bubbled over lol) and Ongsa at a sort of popularity-zenith.
3) What we also get to see is lots and lots of perpendicular lines in the shot composition and in how the characters are positioned!
The new seating arrangement places Ongsa and Sun perpendicular to each other (also peep the poster behind Ongsa's new spot):
The gang or us as the viewers keep being positioned at a 90 degree angle to OngsaSun:
But characters keep interfering with the two of them:
And Ongsa herself is also her own worst enemy:
Though we begin the episode with Ongsa and Sun facing each other, rather than getting stuck perpendicular...
...and end with them no longer forming a line at all but becoming a point instead 💕
#23.5 degrees#23.5 the series#ongsasun#bella and the blorbos#ql musings#as soon as ongsa changed seats i kept noticing this so my language post had to wait at least until i get this out of my system#since when do i talk about shot composition?? fuck if i know! lol#local woman harps on about 23.5

Thai QL fandom 102
Since I kinda forgot about it last time- Disclaimer: not a native Thai speaker, still learning 🙏
หอม vs. จูบ
หอม /haawm/ = fragrant; to smell sth. pleasant; to sniff kiss, e.g. หอมแก้ม /haawm gaaem/ = (sniff) kiss on cheek
homonym with the word for onion (it's spelled and pronounced the same but is of different etymological origin) -> see: a pun on both types of หอม in the first few minutes of Cooking Crush EP.1, as explained here
(from Behind The Scenes of My School President EP.12)
P'Au: การหอมมันต้องมีเสียง /gaan haawm man dtaawng mee siiang/
จูบ /juup/ = kiss, to kiss
also pronounced with a short vowel and high tone (จุ๊บ) to indicate more of a peck, e.g. จุ๊บ ๆ /joop joop/ = kiss kiss, mwah mwah, the equivalent of making a kiss noise
both หอม and จูบ can include nose and/or lips but จูบ /juup/ usually implies lips being used to kiss and หอม /haawm/ usually makes a sniffing sound
เสียงสอง /siiang saawng/ = second voice, second tone
the sweet, softer, higher tone of voice and change in choice of words people use with pets, children, their lover etc.
I commonly see it teased as เสียงสาม /siiang saam/ = third voice, or even higher numbers lol
here's an example of NuNew changing voices within a single breath - he's always the first person that comes to mind for me because both fans and people in the industry always say they naturally slip into เสียงสอง when talking to him because he's so soft-spoken himself and kinda cat-like~
and since this song here came out very recently (and also because I love Mabelz 😌) -
youtube
พ่อไมโครเวฟ /por microwave/
also หนุ่มไมโครเวฟ /noom microwave/ or พ่อหนุ่มไมโครเวฟ /por noom microwave/
พ่อ/หนุ่ม/พ่อหนุ่ม are ways to call a young man so calling someone this expression specifically implies a guy but comparing someone to a microwave is not limited to gender lmao
this basically means that the person in question is warm like a microwave, that is- warm-hearted, kind, taking care etc.
(from Last Twilight EP.7)
ข้างในพี่เขาอาจจะเป็นแบบ พ่อไมโครเวฟเลยก็ได้น่ะ /khaang nai phi khao aat ja bpen baaep- por microwave loei gaaw dai na/
เล่นแท็ก /len tag/ = lit. play a/the tag, get a tag trending on twitter
can probably also be used to talk about other platforms that use hashtags but twitter is really the only place I have experience with in terms of Thai fandom
fanclubs basically try to trend tags to repay their artists that way, and the artist's label might reward them with extra content or the artist might play along with fans or sometimes a koojin jokingly beefs on twitter and then get their own tags going- basically, there's always something going on, twitter really is THE place to be to interact with the fandom and artist
the morning radio show แฉข่าวเช้า /chaae khaao chaao/ (= revealing the morning news) always talks about tags that trended in Thailand the day or so before a new show so I've often seen fans try to get a tag trending for their artist
the show airs daily, except for the weekends, and is livestreamed on youtube too on ATIME
example off the top of my head from last year (when I was still on twt a lot): fans specifically trended the tag #ไก่จ๋าBossมาแล้ว (/gai jaa Boss maa laaew/ = dear chicken, Boss is here), in reference to a clip of Boss Chaikamon singing along to a ลูกทุ่ง /luuk thoong/ song (= a country/folk music genre) called ไก่จ๋า that Noeul had tweeted earlier (see below), and got the tag and thus him featured on the show
Noeul: /hahaha terrrr leerk bpaaek gaawn/ = hahaha youuuu stop being weird
More series vocabulary:
NC = stands for 'No Children' and refers to a sex scene; alternatively referred to as เลิฟซีน /love scene/ but the latter one can include kiss scenes too for example
เบรค /break/ = actors and staff usually refer to the different parts of an episode as breaks (probably because they air that way on tv with commercial breaks between them?), e.g. เบรคหนึ่ง /break nueng/ = break one, part one
คิว/Q = one unit of work time on set, usually a day as far as I'm aware; 23.5 for example took 28 Qs to wrap filming
ฟู้ดซัพพอร์ต /food support/ = the meals, food trucks, coffee trucks etc. that fanclubs buy for their artist and the crew while on set
Ciize: /wan bpit nee glaawng yaaeo/ = Wrap day today alweady /khaawp khun food support jaak thook thook khohn na khaap/ = Thank you for the food support from every single one na khap /mee raaeng tham ngaan laaeowww/ = [I] have the strength to work nowwww
Milk, in the clip: ของหนู จะกินหมดเลย /khaawng nuu, ja gin moht loei/ = Mine, gonna eat it all!

And here I was wondering about the sudden influx of followers and completely new user names on my 23.5 language post but it just occurred to me that someone must've shared it on twt, huh? In any case- hi, new followers 👋 big 'ole nerd for Thai language here! If you're only here for that, you can always follow my tag #local woman harps on about linguistics btw
Send my love to whichever twt user kindly shared it 🙏💕 And, since y'all are likely from twt, I probably don't need to tell you to follow translators, especially ones who are Thai, and not rely solely on little old me's translations since I'm still learning. :)
Hope y'all top the trends, for our girls 😌✨️
#bella and the blorbos#don't even ask about the tag lmao i just needed s t h. so i could categorize more random posts like this
