How Regular Kitchen Exhaust Hood Maintenance Minimizes Fire Hazards
Tumblr media
Maintaining a safe commercial kitchen requires diligent attention to its ventilation systems, particularly the kitchen exhaust hood. Consistent kitchen exhaust hood maintenance is essential for reducing fire risks and ensuring a safe cooking environment. By keeping the exhaust system clean, you can effectively prevent grease buildup, a common cause of kitchen fires. Let’s explore how regular maintenance helps minimize these risks and keeps your kitchen secure.
The Importance of Kitchen Exhaust Hood Maintenance for Fire Safety
The kitchen exhaust hood is designed to extract smoke, steam, and grease-laden air from the kitchen, helping maintain good air quality. However, if it isn’t cleaned regularly, grease can build up in the hood and ductwork, becoming a significant fire hazard. Without proper kitchen exhaust hood maintenance, this buildup can ignite due to high heat or sparks, leading to dangerous fires. Regular cleaning ensures that grease doesn’t accumulate, keeping your kitchen safer and compliant with safety codes.
Benefits of Regular Kitchen Exhaust Hood Maintenance
Beyond reducing fire risks, maintaining your kitchen exhaust hood offers several other benefits that enhance both safety and efficiency:
Reduces Grease Accumulation: Consistent maintenance removes grease deposits from the hood, ducts, and filters, lowering the potential for grease fires.
Improves Ventilation: A well-maintained exhaust hood system ensures better airflow, effectively removing smoke and heat. This creates a safer, more comfortable environment for kitchen staff.
Extends Equipment Lifespan: Routine kitchen exhaust hood maintenance keeps critical components like the fan and motor in good working order, prolonging the system’s life and reducing repair costs.
Ensures Compliance with Safety Standards: Many local fire and building codes require regular exhaust hood maintenance. Staying on top of maintenance helps your kitchen pass inspections and avoid penalties.
Signs That Your Exhaust Hood Needs Maintenance
Knowing when it’s time for kitchen exhaust hood maintenance helps prevent small issues from becoming major problems. Look out for these common indicators that maintenance is overdue:
Visible Grease Drips: Grease dripping from the edges of the hood is a clear sign that it’s time for a deep clean.
Reduced Airflow: If the exhaust system no longer effectively clears smoke, it could mean that grease buildup is blocking the ducts and restricting airflow.
Lingering Odors: Persistent smells in the kitchen may indicate that the exhaust system is not properly removing fumes, signaling that a more thorough cleaning is needed.
How to Maintain Your Kitchen Exhaust Hood
Proper kitchen exhaust hood maintenance involves regular cleaning combined with professional inspections. Here’s how to keep your system in optimal shape:
1. Clean Filters Frequently
Remove and wash the filters every few weeks to prevent grease buildup. Using warm, soapy water helps keep airflow strong and ensures the system functions efficiently.
2. Schedule Professional Cleanings
Hiring professionals for deep cleanings every three to six months is essential to ensure that ducts and hidden areas are free of grease. This is particularly important for high-volume kitchens where grease can accumulate rapidly.
Prioritize Regular Maintenance for a Safer Kitchen
Regular kitchen exhaust hood maintenance is key to reducing fire hazards and maintaining a safe commercial kitchen. By keeping your exhaust system clean, you prevent grease buildup, improve air quality, and extend the lifespan of your equipment. Making maintenance a priority protects your kitchen and offers peace of mind for you, your staff, and your customers.

The Long-Term Advantages of Regular Exhaust Hood Maintenance
Tumblr media
In any commercial kitchen, the exhaust hood system is a vital piece of equipment, responsible for maintaining air quality, reducing fire hazards, and ensuring proper ventilation. However, to keep it functioning optimally over time, regular maintenance is key. Routine maintenance offers numerous long-term benefits that go beyond just keeping your kitchen safe. In this article, we’ll explore how consistent upkeep of your exhaust hood system can save money, enhance performance, and extend its operational life.
Increased Efficiency and Performance
One of the most immediate and long-lasting benefits of routine maintenance is improved system performance. An exhaust hood works hard to expel grease, smoke, and heat from the kitchen, but without regular cleaning and inspection, these contaminants can accumulate in the hood, filters, and ductwork. This buildup restricts airflow, forcing the system to work harder to do its job.
By scheduling regular cleanings, you ensure that the system operates efficiently, maintaining strong airflow and reducing the strain on the fan and motor. Over time, this leads to smoother operation and consistent performance, improving the overall environment in your kitchen.
Extended Equipment Lifespan
Routine maintenance not only improves performance but also extends the lifespan of your exhaust hood system. Grease buildup, mechanical issues, and blocked filters can cause components like the fan, motor, and ductwork to wear out faster than they should. Regular inspections and cleanings help prevent these issues from escalating into major problems, ensuring that the system remains in good working condition for years to come.
By investing in regular upkeep, you can significantly prolong the life of your exhaust system, saving on costly repairs or replacements in the long run.
Reduced Risk of Fire Hazards
A well-maintained exhaust hood system is crucial for fire prevention in commercial kitchens. Grease is highly flammable, and without proper maintenance, it can accumulate in the hood and ductwork, increasing the risk of a grease fire. Regular cleaning removes this buildup, reducing the likelihood of fire and ensuring a safer kitchen environment.
In addition to preventing grease fires, regular maintenance helps your system stay compliant with local fire codes and safety regulations, protecting your business from fines or penalties.
Lower Energy Costs
When an exhaust hood system is clogged or malfunctioning, it consumes more energy to expel heat, smoke, and contaminants from the kitchen. This inefficiency drives up energy costs and puts unnecessary strain on the system. Routine maintenance keeps the system clean and free of blockages, allowing it to operate efficiently and use less energy.
Over time, the energy savings from regular maintenance can add up, making a noticeable difference in your monthly utility bills.
Preventing Unexpected Breakdowns
Unexpected breakdowns can be both disruptive and costly, especially in a busy commercial kitchen. Routine maintenance helps identify potential problems early, such as worn-out parts, motor issues, or airflow blockages. By addressing these small issues before they escalate, you can avoid sudden system failures that could halt operations and lead to expensive emergency repairs.
Regular maintenance ensures that your exhaust hood remains reliable, reducing the risk of unexpected downtime and keeping your kitchen running smoothly.
Compliance with Health and Safety Standards
In commercial kitchens, adhering to health and safety regulations is critical. Many local fire and health codes require regular exhaust hood maintenance to prevent hazards and maintain proper ventilation. Failing to comply with these regulations can result in fines, penalties, or even business closure. Regular maintenance ensures that your exhaust system meets these safety standards, reducing your liability and keeping your kitchen safe.
Compliance also builds trust with customers and employees, showing that you prioritize their safety and well-being.
Long-Term Cost Savings
While routine maintenance requires an investment of time and resources, the long-term cost savings are substantial. Preventative maintenance helps avoid expensive repairs, reduces energy costs, and extends the life of your equipment. By addressing issues before they become major problems, you save money in the long run and ensure that your exhaust hood system continues to operate efficiently for years to come.

How to Get Rid of Clogged Restaurant Filters
When a restaurant’s exhaust hood filters get dirty, the fan can’t work properly to pull smoke and grease out of the kitchen. This can make the restaurant filter cleaning, smoky and hot, and customers don’t want to eat in a place that smells like a greasy kitchen. But if you clean your filters regularly, the fan can continue to do its job. The best way to do that is with an automated hood cleaning system like AutoMist. These systems can be programmed to clean your vent system on a schedule that fits with your kitchen’s operations. They work from inside the hood and ducts, spraying a mix of grease-dissolving water and detergent that goes to work to remove accumulated grease.
Using this method eliminates the need to shut down the restaurant for a long cleaning process. It also frees up staff to focus on other tasks. If you don’t want to deal with a third-party kitchen exhaust cleaning company, there are ways you can cut back on the need for a full cleaning by doing things like installing hood access doors to make it easier to get at your filter.
First, start by removing your filters and getting them ready for the cleaning process. They should be wiped down with a sponge or non-abrasive brush to remove loose debris. Then, fill a sink or large container with a solution of degreaser and hot water. Submerge the filters and let them soak for 10 to 15 minutes.
After the soaking, drain the sink and rinse your filters. You can then use the sponge or non-abrasive brush again to remove any remaining grease and dirt from your filter. Now, let the filters air dry before putting them back in the exhaust system.
When you’re finished, your filters should look good as new and be ready for use. They’ll help keep your kitchen cleaner and safer for your employees and customers. And, they’ll help your kitchen exhaust system stay in compliance with NFPA 96 requirements.
A clogged filter can lead to an overworked motor, forcing it to work overtime to push heat and smoke out of the restaurant. That puts the restaurant at risk of a fire. But, when the filters are cleaned on a regular basis and following a cleaning schedule, the fan can continue to do its job without causing a fire hazard.
To avoid costly repairs and expensive re-cleaning, it’s important to follow a cleaning schedule for your exhaust system. A reputable and certified hood cleaning company will clean the entire kitchen exhaust system from the hood canopy to the exhaust fan and baffle filters. This will not only keep the kitchen and customers safe, but it will help you avoid a costly fire. And, it’ll allow you to continue to receive inspection stickers that show when your restaurant is due for a full cleaning by a third-party kitchen exhaust company. This will keep your restaurant in compliance with local and state regulations.

Regular maintenance of your restaurant fire suppression system is not only a safety requirement but also a sound business practice. Neglecting maintenance can lead to system failure, increasing the risk of kitchen fires, property damage, and potential injury to employees and customers. Be proactive in maintaining and inspecting your system to ensure it functions as intended.

A Guide to Proper Maintenance in Commercial Kitchens
In the heart of every successful food service establishment, from the bustling kitchens of restaurants to the behind-the-scenes operations of hotels and catering businesses, lies an essential hub where culinary magic unfolds: the commercial kitchen. This dynamic space is where ingredients are transformed into delectable dishes, where creativity meets precision, and where the demands of gastronomy are met with finesse. But beyond the sizzle of pans and the aromatic symphony, lies an equally crucial aspect that ensures the seamless functioning of this culinary symposium - proper maintenance. Below are some key aspects of maintaining a commercial kitchen.
Regular Cleaning Routine
Establish a clear cleaning schedule that designates specific tasks to different shifts or days of the week. This can include wiping down countertops, cleaning grills, deep-cleaning ovens, and sanitising cutting boards. Pay special attention to high-touch areas like door handles, light switches, and faucets. Use appropriate cleaning agents and ensure staff are trained in proper cleaning techniques.
Equipment Maintenance
Create a maintenance calendar that outlines when each piece of equipment should be inspected, serviced, and cleaned. Regularly check for signs of wear such as frayed cords, rust, or unusual noises. Keep track of when filters, gaskets, and other components need replacement. Train kitchen staff to use equipment properly to prevent unnecessary stress on machinery.
Ventilation and Air Quality
Inspect exhaust hoods and ducts for grease buildup regularly, aiming for monthly or quarterly cleaning depending on usage intensity. Clean or replace filters as needed. Test the effectiveness of ventilation systems by checking for lingering odours or excessive heat. Proper air quality enhances the comfort of the kitchen staff and maintains a more pleasant dining environment.
Plumbing and Drainage
Educate staff about proper disposal practices to prevent the introduction of grease and food particles into drainage systems. Implement a routine of snaking and flushing drains to prevent clogs. Regularly inspect plumbing for leaks and address any issues promptly to prevent water damage. Better yet, seek the help of your trusted local plumber Brisbane North professional.
Food Safety and Storage
Train staff to follow food safety guidelines, including proper temperature control, cross-contamination prevention, and hand hygiene. Ensure that refrigeration units have consistent temperatures to prevent food spoilage. Use colour-coded containers and labels to easily identify different types of food and their expiration dates.
Flooring and Safety Measures
Invest in slip-resistant flooring and promptly repair any damaged sections. Create a cleaning protocol for spills to prevent accidents. Place anti-fatigue mats in areas where staff stand for extended periods to reduce strain and enhance comfort.
Pest Control
Develop a pest control plan with the help of professionals, focusing on prevention rather than reaction. Seal entry points such as gaps around pipes and vents. Maintain a clean environment by promptly disposing of trash and storing food in pest-proof containers. Regularly monitor for signs of pests and take immediate action if any are detected.
Staff Training
Conduct regular training sessions on various aspects of kitchen maintenance and safety. Provide clear guidelines for cleaning procedures and equipment handling. Encourage staff to report any maintenance issues they encounter promptly. Foster a sense of pride in maintaining a clean and organised kitchen environment.
Record Keeping
Use digital tools or physical logs to document maintenance activities, repairs, and cleaning schedules. This information can aid in tracking trends and patterns, enabling you to make informed decisions about equipment replacement or upgrades. It also demonstrates compliance with regulations during inspections.
By paying attention to these elaborate details and consistently implementing them in your commercial kitchen, you create an environment that operates smoothly, upholds high standards of hygiene, and ensures the safety and satisfaction of both staff and customers. Proper maintenance is an investment that pays off in the long run by preventing costly breakdowns, health code violations, and reputation damage.

The Impact of Proper Installation on Commercial Kitchen Exhaust Hood Performance
Tumblr media
In any commercial kitchen, the exhaust hood plays a critical role in maintaining a safe and efficient cooking environment. From removing grease-laden air to controlling temperature and eliminating odors, a well-functioning exhaust hood is essential. However, the performance of this system largely depends on one crucial factor: proper installation. In this article, we will explore how correct installation enhances the overall performance of commercial kitchen exhaust hoods and why it's essential for the success of any commercial kitchen.
Optimal Ventilation and Airflow
The primary function of an exhaust hood is to ventilate the kitchen by removing heat, smoke, and fumes produced during cooking. However, improper installation can significantly hinder airflow, leading to poor ventilation and higher temperatures in the kitchen. A properly installed exhaust hood ensures that air flows smoothly through the system, effectively removing contaminants from the air and keeping the kitchen well-ventilated.
Correct installation also prevents any obstructions or misalignments in the ductwork, allowing the hood to operate at maximum efficiency. This results in better air quality, improved comfort for kitchen staff, and a more productive working environment.
Enhanced Energy Efficiency
In commercial kitchens, energy efficiency is crucial to reducing operating costs. When an exhaust hood is improperly installed, it can cause leaks or inefficiencies in the ductwork, forcing the system to work harder than necessary. This not only increases energy consumption but also leads to wear and tear on the equipment, which can shorten its lifespan.
With a professional installation, the exhaust hood is calibrated for optimal performance, ensuring that it operates efficiently without wasting energy. This translates to lower energy bills and longer-lasting equipment, making it a worthwhile investment for any commercial kitchen.
Improved Grease and Smoke Filtration
A major challenge in commercial kitchens is the buildup of grease and smoke, which can create a fire hazard if not properly managed. A well-installed exhaust hood is designed to capture and filter grease particles and smoke effectively, preventing them from accumulating in the ventilation system.
Improper installation can lead to gaps or misalignments, reducing the system’s ability to capture these contaminants and increasing the risk of grease buildup. By ensuring that the exhaust hood is correctly installed, you can improve its filtration capabilities, enhancing kitchen safety and reducing the need for frequent cleaning and maintenance.
Compliance with Health and Safety Codes
Commercial kitchens are subject to strict health and safety regulations, particularly regarding ventilation systems. Improper installation of an exhaust hood can result in violations of these codes, which could lead to fines, closures, or other legal issues. Additionally, non-compliance may increase the risk of accidents such as fires or carbon monoxide exposure.

Five Common Reasons To Check Your Engine Light Is On
Tumblr media
It's among every car owner's worst nightmares: that check engine light has become illuminated in your dash. This indicates that there are serious problems underneath your car's hood.
It might be a simple fix, but it could also be a problem that leaves you in a bind and cost you thousands of dollars unless it's dealt with promptly. Whatever the case, it's crucial to find the root of the issue as soon as you can. If you need additional hints about engine light, check out here.
Here are five of the most common reasons your check engine light may be on.
1. Problem with Your Gas Cap
Out of all the reasons that your check engine light might be on, this one could be the most cost-effective and easiest to repair. In certain cars, the check engine light will come on when the cap on your gas tank is not in place or is damaged, loose, or broken.
Gas fumes from your car may escape into the air if the gas cap isn't correctly sealant your fuel system. You'll lose fuel and you will have to refill your vehicle more often because of this loss.
2. Oxygen Sensor Malfunction
One of the most common reasons your check engine light might appear is that the oxygen sensor has failed. It is easily replaced by the local Western Washington auto shop. This will enable you to restore your vehicle's ability of measuring unburned oxygen within the exhaust system.
Your engine will use more fuel if it's not replaced before the fuel economy declines. A new oxygen sensor will also help you prevent damage to your catalytic converter and spark plugs.
3. Problems with Spark Plugs
The spark plugs in your vehicle are responsible for the ignition of fuel in your vehicle's combustion chamber. They receive their spark from the ignition coil by way of the spark plug wires. A problem with either your spark plug's wiring or the spark plugs itself could cause the check engine light to turn on.
If you ignore this issue, it could cause a blocked catalytic converter, damaged ignition coils, or issues with your oxygen sensor. Spark plugs that are healthy are essential to maintain your car's performance and fuel efficiency.
4. Bad Catalytic Converter
youtube
The catalytic converter usually fails after the other issues with your engine are not taken care of. Your car will not function properly if it's not functioning properly if your catalytic converter stops working.
It is also necessary to have a functioning catalytic converter in order to pass an emissions test, since it's responsible for reducing carbon monoxide emission.
5. Failing Aftermarket Alarm
You could have an engine check light on because you've recently added an aftermarket alarm to your car.
Failing products or poor installation can lead to a range of issues, such as failure to get the engine started, drained batteries, and many other issues.

“The Most Average Cup of Tea.”
What if the darklighter, Jimmy got the wrong house? What if instead of the Charmed ones’ home he orbed into their cousin’s house? Will the encounter with the eccentric witch lead to new experiences or will they end up destroying each other?
Warnings: Near-death experience, secrets and lies, dissing English tea and the Beatles, damage of property
Tumblr media Tumblr media
~
It had been a stressful day, heck it had been a stressful month, a stressful year, yet they had made it through. The Charmed ones, her cousins, Maggie, Macy and Mel had grown into their powers, slowly and steadily. Their mother would’ve been so proud of the women they turned out to be. Marisol had entrusted them to her, trusting that she’d be able to help them learn about magic, just like she (Marisol) and her own mother taught her when she was younger.
After an exhausting day at the headquarters, she went back to her own house, relieved to be home. Don’t get her wrong, the girls are wonderful to be around, but sometimes...it can get a bit much and they all needed some breathing space.
She lived in a house a few houses away from the Vera residence. Her house was almost as big as the Charmed ones’ house, it’s layout was similar as well. With vines growing up the walls, blooming with flowers and large spacious rooms that she used for her various hobbies. She also had a garden behind the house, full of herbs both exotic and local that she used in potions.
After today, she was just exhausted and decided that she would let off some steam in her house, relax, take a bubble bath, pamper herself.
She was in her kitchen, the windows open as a cool breeze brushed against her face. Her kettle of lemon grass tea was on the stove, smoking slightly as the water inside heated up.
The wind-chimes on the window tinkled in the breeze as her tea finished boiling. Taking it off the stove she slowly pored it into her favorite mug before walking towards the living room.
As she padded towards the living room she sensed something. She barely had a moment to react before a darklighter popped into existence, throwing his knife at her. She ducked quickly, her favorite mug shattering as it hit the floor.
“Hey! That was my favorite mug!” She yelled at the hooded figure, yet with no regard for her mug, he stepped over it, chasing after her. How disrespectful, honestly.
She gave chase around the house till she reached her bedroom, where she stashed some emergency potions. She found the one she was looking for.
Quickly finding the darklighter in her living room she smashed the bottle at his feet and said an incantation, creating a dome-like barrier to contain him.
Cautiously walking towards him, she asked, “Who are you?”
No reply came from him. He kept banging the dome when that didn’t seem to work he tried orbing out but was unable to as the dome interfered with his powers.
“Okay, the very least you could do is tell me your name, because you know, you just tried to kill me and it’s quite impolite for one to not introduce themselves after such a dramatic entry. I mean, it’ll cost a fortune in repairs, honestly you people have no care for interior decoration.”
“Jimmy.”
“Hmm?”
“My name. It’s Jimmy.”
“Well then, Jimmy, what brings you to my witch-y tavern? Well, apart from dicing me up and serving me to whichever master that sent you. Which reminds me, who sent you?”
He once again didn’t answer, tilting his head at me as if he was wondering if she was being brave or simply stupid.
“Well, since you’re less than inclined to answer, what’ll you have?”
“What?” He asked, irritated.
“Well, since you’re gonna be here for a while, I have to give you something to eat, don’t I? My mother didn’t raise a bad hostess. So, what’ll you have? Tea? Coffee? Eggnog? Maybe a snickers, because we all know you’re not yourself when you’re hungry,” she said, chuckling
“Are you an idiot? I just tried to kill you and you’re acting like everything’s fine. Heck you’re even offering me biscuits and tea?!”
“So, Jim-Jams it is! I’ve always liked those! The jammy deliciousness at the center is the best part!”
“Great. Of all the witches I could get trapped by, I get the crazy one with an obsession for bad puns and biscuits.”
“Oh loosen up my murderous friend. So, what do darklighters do on their down time or is it a full time gig?” She asked cheerfully, passing a tray of tea and a plate of Jim-Jams.
He sat cross-legged on the floor, observing the tray before pushing it away slightly, suspicious of the food being poisoned.
“What did you put in this?” He asked gruffly.
“Well, it’s lemongrass tea. It was what I made, before you so kindly barged in here. Which reminds me, why are you here? Besides the obvious.”
“You’re a witch. I kill witches. It’s not that complicated.”
“Perhaps, or perhaps it’s because of a certain curly haired charmed sister?” At this, he quickly whipped his face towards me, staring at me with wide eyes.
“How did I know? Please, as much as the charmed ones are powerful they’re not as well-read as I am, especially after I got my hands some of the Elder’s books, plus with Harry sprouting flowery feelings for Macy it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that you do too. Only you’re probably more likely to act on those feelings,” she said, taking a large sip of her tea, sighing in content, “A word of advice, though. Macy adores her sisters as you probably know, so she’d hate for anyone to harm them. Anyone. So. it’d be...best to not harm her sisters.”
“I didn’t ask for love advice from a witch,” he said venomously.
“Yet you love one. Ironic isn’t it. Like a lion falling for a lamb. But Macy is no lamb, so that’s inaccurate. Like a lion falling for a-a something that’s opposite to it but not weak. Whatever. Anyway, you get the point.”
Sighing in frustration, the darklighter drank the tea she gave him.
‘To hell with it, even death is better than conversing with this crazy woman,’ he thought.
She watched him drink the tea with a smile on her face.
“Once again, what brings you to my witch-y lair?”
“I was trying to find information about where the charmed ones have hidden their home,” he said without a thought before covering his hands with his mouth.
“Why did I say that? What did you put in this tea?!”
“Oh, a dash of truth serum. Well, the Harry Potter buffs would call it Veritaserum. Has a nice ring to it, don’t you think?”
“You said it wasn’t poisoned!” He exclaimed in a high pitch.
“Technically, it isn’t poisoned. This just loosens your tongue a bit. Think of it like tequila but with without the dizzy high, the hangover, the smell and you acting like a fool.”
The darklighter sighed, sipping on the tea. Might as well drink all of it so he could eventually forget the strange witch.
“It’s a personal recipe of mine. Doesn’t have the effects of you forgetting this conversation, so relax dear darklighter because our conversation will be with you for a long while yet!”
~
He was pouting. No, he was brooding. The witch outside the barrier had gone to put their cups away. She was certainly unlike any other witch he’d encountered. Even Macy ran away from him when she realized who he was, what he was yet she didn’t. To be fair, she trapped him in a dome and fed him truth serum but that was certainly better than being poisoned and dead.
“Are you ever going to let me go?”
Contemplating for a few moments she answered, “Eventually. If you vow not to harm me or kill innocent witches.”
“You can’t keep me here forever. Eventually the barrier will come down. And about those witches you fight so valiantly to protect, the so called ‘innocent’ witches are few and far between. Everyone has done evil, especially you and your beloved charmed ones.”
Displeased with his answer, she turned away from him.
“A word of advice, little witch. Everyone responds to fear. It’s better to be feared than respected.”
“The Elders tried that route, you know? And where did that lead them? We’re building a dynasty, one that will be fair, not just to witches but to the beings of other species as well.”
“A naive dream from a crazy witch. Eventually the weeds of corruption will sprout and then what’ll happen to your so called ‘dynasty’?”
Wordlessly she turned way, unable to answer him.
~
Eventually she did let him go, but only after he promised not to harm her and vice versa.
She thought that’d be the last of what she saw of the darklighter in a some-what non violent context, but she was wrong.
Apparently her Jim-Jams and lemongrass tea drew him in so much so that he popped in at random intervals for tea.
“Why do you keep coming back?” she once asked.
“Because I can’t find an average cup of tea in this disgusting place and because you’re obligated to serve me free tea in recompense for poisoning me the first time.”
“Oh really?” She laughed.
“Really,” he said deadly serious. “I believe you’re familiar with the phrase ‘A Lannister always pays his debts’, well, ‘A darklighter always collects his debts’.”
“Did you jus- Did you just make a Game of Thrones reference?!” She asked, oddly proud.
“Maybe,” he said, avoiding eye-contact and sipping his tea.
“You’ve been watching the serials I gave you a list of! Oh, I’m so proud of you, old man!” She exclaimed, excited.
“I’m not old,” he mumbled, slightly offended.
“Please, you’re probably older than Moses himself with the way you walk with a staff up your-”
“I think that’s enough tea for today, crazy witch,” he said before quickly orbing away.
“Hey! I prefer the term ‘eccentric’,” she yelled at the air.
~
She’d always told him to send a warning before he randomly popped in but he always told her that he liked to ‘keep her on her toes’. That’s entirely what landed them in this predicament in the first place.
Her favourite (and only) cousins dropped by for her infamous afternoon tea with a twist. She’d been planning this for weeks, determined to give the Charmed sisters a normal afternoon after all the mess they had to deal with on an almost daily basis but apparently one event-free afternoon was not fated for the four.
In her haste to prepare everything for their afternoon tea she’d forgotten to tell her prickly neighborhood darklighter that she’d be hosting guests that day.
~
Mel picked up one of the adorable fruit tarts, popping one in her mouth, enjoying the tart taste of the strawberry-filled pastry.
It was Macy’s first afternoon tea, her eyes were filled with light as she took a bite of one of the tarts, exclaiming, “Y/N! This is delicious! I didn’t know you could bake!”
“Well, a witch’s gotta have secrets. That’s how you keep them guessing,” she said with a slight chuckle.
“Oh you haven’t even gotten to the best part!” Maggie squealed.
“There’s more?” Macy asked, eyeing the table full of finger-sandwiches, tarts and tiny cakes.
“Of course! It’s not called ‘afternoon tea with a twist’ for nothing!” Maggie said.
“Well, what’s the twist?” Macy asked, unable to contain her curiosity.
“Patience, Mace. You’ll find out soon enough. In the mean time, have you tried the mini-cakes? They’re to die for!” Mal soothed.
Y/N came out of the kitchen, a triumphant look on her face and in her hands was a rather large cake.
Placing it in the empty space in the center of the table she cleared her throat. Dramatically introducing the cake she said, “May I present thee, my Coquito Tres Leches!!!”
“Wait, so you’re telling me, you combined Coquito, which is an incredible drink, with Tres Leches cake?!” Macy asked, excited at the prospect of tasting the cake in front of her.
“Yes! And the honor of the first and the biggest piece goes to you, Macy!” She announced dramatically.
“I shall gladly accept thy gracious offer,” Macy said, accepting the large slice of cake.
“Hey! Why don’t we get the largest piece?!” Maggie asked, pouting slightly.
“Because you’ve always gotten the largest piece and since this is Macy’s first afternoon tea, she will have the biggest piece.”
Just as Macy dug her fork into her slice of cake the witches felt a surge of power in the living room.
Looking towards the intruder they saw Jimmy with his hood up in all his darklighter glory. Looking up he was momentarily surprised to see the Charmed ones.
His moment of hesitation was all the Charmed ones needed to jump into action. Macy threw a fireball at him which he was able to dodge. In defence he threw a dagger at the Charmed ones. Mel was not fast enough to stop it but before either parties could react Y/N stood between the two.
She felt the dagger pierce through her, looking Jimmy in the eye as she stumbled to the ground.
The Charmed ones were in shock, watching the woman who had been almost an elder sister to them be taken down so easily.
Jimmy ran towards the fallen witch, desperately cradling her body as he begged, “No, no, no, no, no, no. You can’t die. Please, I didn’t mean to.”
“Hey, I always said, you’d be the death of me,” she joked morbidly.
“No, you can’t die. I won’t allow it,” Jimmy declared.
“Hah, even in death you’re so bossy,” she teased breathlessly, the green-tinted poison rapidly spreading through her veins.
“Well, a darklighter always collects his debts and who would make me average tea after you’re gone?” He asked rhetorically, with glossy eyes, trying to get her to hold on.
“Jim-Jam?”
“Yes?”
“Kitchen cabinet. Top Shelf. Purple healing potion. Drop it into the wound after you remove this blasted dagger,” she instructed seriously.
Snapping out of her daze Mel quickly grabbed the potion from the cabinet, cautiously kneeling next to the darklighter.
“You- And him?! Bu- But HOW?! And WHEN?!” Maggie sputtered.
“Maggie now’s not the time,” Mel said.
Removing the dagger she saw the wound infected with darklighter poison. She quickly poured the potion over the wound.
For a few minutes, nothing happened as Y/N seemed to grow weaker as the poison seemed to spread quicker than before
“What?! Why isn’t it working?! Can’t you do something?!” Macy yelled at the darklighter.
Bowing his head, he shook it dejectedly.
“There is no cure for the poison,” he said.
The Charmed ones felt their hearts break as they watched their newly departed cousin.
Suddenly they heard her gasp for air. She opened her eyes looking at the darklighter. Grinning she said, “You’re not getting rid of me that easily Jim-Jam.”
“B-But how? The poison is not supposed to have any antedote.”
“That’s for me to know and for you to never find out. Remember you still have a master.”
“Ehem. Jim-Jam?” Macy asked, raising an eyebrow at the two.
“It’s a long story,” Y/N said, trying to avoid the uncomfortable topic.
“Well it’s a good thing we’ve got all afternoon,” Mel said with a wicked smirk.
~
After Y/N explained everything, the Charmed ones sat on the couch in shock.
Jimmy sat at the kitchen table, devouring the Coquito Tres Leches cake.
“So, you’ve been-been meeting him behind our backs? How could you?” Maggie asked.
“Yeah, and what exactly are you two?” Macy asked, befundelled.
“Friends.”
“Enemies,” they answered at the same time.
“Ehem. We’re enemies who have tea together and do not kill each other,” Y/N answered.
“Which reminds me. This is delicious, why haven’t you made this for me before?” The darklighter asked with a mouthful of cake.
“Because, you usually drop by for tea and biscuits not decadent cake, plus it’s only made for special occasions,” she answered.
“Is my arrival in this hovel not a special occasion?” Jimmy asked, cockily.
“No. And my house is NOT a hovel! It’s a tastefully decorated witch cave,” she answered matter-of-factly.
“A witch cave?” Jimmy laughed.
“Yes. Batman has a Bat cave, I have a witch cave. Simple,” she told him.
He rolled his eyes at her before slicing another piece of cake.
“He kills witches. Innocent witches! How could you, Y/N?!” Mel screamed, outraged.
“Look, he turned up at my house intent to kill me, okay? So we have a deal in place. He doesn’t kill me, I can’t kill him and I give him tea and desserts.”
“So you feed his sweet tooth in order to live?” Maggie asked.
“I know it’s weird but it kinda works.”
“Unbelieveable.”
“How did you manage to cure the poison? I mean, we’ve been looking for a cure for weeks, or have you been lying about that too?”
“I-uh,” she looked back at Jimmy before casting a dome of silence around them.
“Okay, now he can’t hear us.”
“How do you know?” Mel asked.
“Watch this,” she said, “The Beatles suck, the best tea is Southern Sweet tea not English Breakfast tea and the right way to make tea is with a microwave not a kettle.”
They looked at Jimmy but he had no reaction.
“Told you. Anyway, to answer your question....I have been experimenting with some black amber...”
“Y/N! You know that stuff is powerful!”
“I know, I know but I thought that since it enhanced your powers it might improve the potency of potions. And I was right. It counteracted the darklighter poison almost immediately.”
“But how?” Macy asked.
“The darklighter poison was created with the leaves of the black amber tree. I figured if it could create the poison, then the sap would be able to counteract it’s effects,” she answered, shrugging.
The Charmed sisters couldn’t believe it. The woman they considered an older sister was friends with their enemy. This could either lead to something good or either one of their deaths.
“Fine,” Mel said with a serious expression.
“Fine...what?” Y/N asked her curiously.
“I don’t like what you and Jimmy got going on and I may not agree with it but I will not interfere with it.” Mel said resoloutely.
“Wha- Mel?! You can’t let her do this!”
“Maggie, she’s a grown woman and trying to stop her will be useless. All we can do is support her in her decisions and be there for her if it all goes to Hell.”
“I agree,” Macy said. “I may not understand...this but I believe in you. And who knows, maybe you’ll be able to bring him into the light.”
Y/N chuckled at that, “Maybe.”
“I just don’t want you to get hurt,” Maggie said.
“You can’t protect me from everything Mags. I will get hurt but I will get up,” she comforted.
“But what if you can’t get up?” Maggie asked sniffling at the prospect of losing her.
“I’ll always get up because I’ll always have you...,” Y/N trailed off.
“...And you’ll always have me,” Maggie completed.
“Fine. You have my support. But if that darklighter touches a strand of your perfectly styled hair, I will make him regret being born,” Maggie vowed.
“Woah there little tiger!” Y/N chuckled, “But seriously, thank you, all three of you.”
“It’s okay, Y/N. You’re family. Just never hide anything like this from us again. Okay?” Mel said.
“Okay.”
~
In the time taken for them to talk it out Jimmy orbed out of the house, leaving only one half of the giant cake she’d prepared.
The four continued with their afternoon tea after they’d cleaned up the mess they’d made during the fight.
They knew that the fight between good and evil was far from over but for that brief moment they were carefree, enjoying each other’s company.
~
Jimmy came back that evening.
“You’ve got to stop doing that!” Y/N jumped.
Jimmy laughed before saying, “If I did, how would enter your delightful ‘witch cave’?”
“By using the door? Like regular people?”
“But that’s boring. Plus, I like seeing you startled.”
“I knew you were a little sadist deep down.”
“Oh, really? How so?”
“I’ve seen your weapon collection. Kinky.”
Jimmy burst out laughing. Most people had feared his collection of blades but here was a witch who was calling them ‘kinky’.
“Anyway, how did the talk with your beloved Charmed ones go?”
“It went pretty well, they’ve agreed to let us continue...this,” she answered.
“Oh? And what is...this?”
“Enemies. Like you said.”
“Hmm. Enemies,” he said with a glint in his eyes.
“Hey Jim-Jam?”
He sighed at the nickname before answering, “Yes?”
“When I was dying, did I see you on the verge of tears?”
“I’m sure you were imagining that. I was NOT on the verge of tears.”
“Awwe! So you do care about me!” She teased.
“No I don’t. I only keep you around because you make the most average cup of tea for miles.”
Snorting she said, “Yeah, sure. Anyway, I have some leftover cake. Do-”
Before she could even complete her sentence the darklighter was already in the kitchen, munching on the slice of heaven she had prepared.
~
As time went on, the two became an incredible duo, almost able to read each other’s minds during fights. They were a fearsome together and after Harry had been separated from Jimmy the newfound autonomy allowed the darklighter to pursue anything he wanted, which included the eccentric witch who nurtured his insatiable sweet-tooth.
For years, long after the both were gone, the magic world still whispered tales about the darklighter and the witch.

A/N = Aunt’s Name
Soulmates were a fickle thing. When you're born there’s a tattoo somewhere on your body showing who you are meant to be with, yours was a pair of exhaust pipes, on your collarbone.
Your quirk was cat-like, you had cat-like hearing and had cat ears and you were extremely balanced. You had cat sight too, which meant that you could see in the dark really well and had cat pupils too. Since your tattoo was exhaust pipes, you help out at the local automotive shop which your uncle owned. He taught you everything you knew about cars, he taught you how to fix them, how they work.
But you wanted to be a hero so you applied to UA and got in. You had passed the exam just barely and were accepted into Class 1-A. You made quick friends with Uraraka and Tsu. As well as Kaminari whom you would laugh and joke with when he helped you at the shop after school on Wednesdays. Tenya Iida was pretty cute and his quirk was quite unique with him having engine’s in his calves. The two of you became friends, both being very good at school and helping to keep the others in line.
It was the weekend and you had a project which you had been paired with Iida for. But you were working at the repair shop that weekend, so Iida offered to come and work on your project there together with him.
You knew that he was a rich boy and that he probably hadn’t worked much but you figured you could make him help you wash some cars. It was the day that he was supposed to come over and work with you, because of your quirk most people think that you hate water but you're fine with it, in fact you loved getting wet. “Hey” you said to Iida as he walked into the shop.
“Hello (Y/L/N), so why did you ask me to bring an extra pair of clothes?” “We’re only working on a project”
“Sorry Iida but I need a hand with washing a car first, If you’re okay with that?”
“Of course, but we will get our schoolwork done right”
“Of course we will Iida” you said and showed Iida where to put his things so they would not get wet. Your soulmate tattoo was partly peeking out of its place on your collarbone. Iida recognized those pipes as his own exhaust pipes that came out of his legs. Iida didn’t say anything as the two of you washed the car talking about anything but soulmates.
His own tattoo was a small cat that slightly resembles you; it had the same knick out of it’s left ear as you did out of yours. Iida didn’t know for sure and out of impulse he said “I think we’re soulmates” over the music that you put on. You stopped in your tracks to look at him
“You really think so” you said, pausing mid-reach across the hood of the car, letting Iida slightly see down your shirt. Iida quickly looked away with a squeak as his face turned red
“Yes  I believe so, but please don’t let your shirt get wet”
“Why….Oh shit” you said as you saw that you yourself could look down and see your cleavage. “Sorry about that Iida, But did you at least like what you saw” you teased Iida.
“Well yes but-” Iida quickly stopped himself as that came out of his mouth. He clamped his mouth shut but you had already heard what he said. You came around the car to stand in front of Iida. His instinct took over and he passionately kissed you. He placed his hands on your waist and you put yours on his back clinging tightly to him, one of Iida’s hands ventured upwards resting dangerously close to your breast. Your own hand went into the back of his hair. The two of you continued to make out until the door to the shop opened. Your uncle came in to see you pressed up against the car you had been cleaning.
“I’m happy to know that my niece is relieving urges, But in the garage really (Y/N)”
“Uncle it’s not like you didn’t do it here when you were my age”
“At least I didn't do it when there were other people around” your uncle said
“Well it was supposed to be just us here today, so why are you here?”
“(A/N) is mad at me again” you uncle said and went into his office.
Iida and you parted from each other “Hey we should go on a real date sometime” Iida said to you
“I would love too but maybe we should do our project and wash the rest of the car first”
“That is a good idea,” Iida said as the two of you finished up all of your work laughing and having fun. Looking forward to going on a date sometime.
