we all see marriage as a closer relationship between two people who are engaged, a lifetime with your best friend and the love of your life.

In my country, we take it a whole step further to show how you love and respect your future spouse along with their family. ‘Dowry’ as it’s known in English is when a bride price is paid towards the bride’s family for how much the groom knows his future wife’s worth but it's also his & his family's promise to maintain the lifestyle her family has given her. Not too long ago, it was negotiated with cows as cows cost sooo much money.

We call these, Lobola negotiations. You send your uncles to your fiancé’s maternal home and her uncles will participate in the negotiations, games are also played to lighten the mood.

Through all of this, it’s the bride’s most happiest and important days. If you fuck up, her family will not give you blessings to continue to get married.

Important activities such Vula Mlomo are vital to a lobola negotiation. It’s the act of the bride’s family keeping silent as they wait by the home gate with the groom’s family and they have to pay whatever the bride’s family sees fit to just enter the yard, same has to be done with the uncles.

Its translation is literally “Open Mouth”, meaning you need to pay up some good money before you’re let in.

Saying clan names is also very important btw.

After all that is done, it’s time to celebrate! Bring in the cows (or don’t, we’re modern now) and have a big Lobola Lunch with friends and family to celebrate your marriage being recognised by the elders. Traditional wear is very important too so make sure to look fabulous!

so as i may have hinted, i am currently in Zimbabwe, for the wedding of my best friend. his fiancé is from here, so part of the proceedings involves the traditional wedding, called a lobola. And it is embarrassing me beyond belief that a number of the groom’s party, entirely of their own volition, have decided it’s pronounced ‘luh-bow-lah’.

Like, people have been coaching us about what we’re doing and what we’re wearing and all that. The bride and her mother have used the word several times. It’s not pronounced like that.

In Zulu beading the UCU is a 5-meter strand of white beads. Or colourful bracelet. As an engagement symbol, this necklace/bracelet is beaded by women and worn untwisted for one day as a signal of her agreement to marry. Once agreements between the two families have concluded the UCU is worn twisted.

Amacansi (sleeping mats) are used in traditional weddings as customary gifts that the bride gives in a traditional Zulu wedding settlement. The gifts are collectively known as umabo, and Incema grass has the highest status of all the materials used for making Amacansi.

It is also laid out as a platform to speak/ negotiate upon in lobolo negotiations.

What is Lobola?

Lobolo or lobola is practised in the Swazi, Zulu, Silozi, Xhosa, Shona, Ndebele, and other South African communities. During a lobola ceremony, bridewealth or bride price is paid to the bride's family.

The letter

Lobola letter Before negotiations begin, the groom/bride-to-be should issue a typed or handwritten lobola letter. In the letter, the bride/groom-to-be expresses their desire to speak to the bride/groom-to-be’s family about joining the two families together.

The letter should be polite and genuine. It is usually presented to the boy/girl's family by a trusted member of the bride/groom’s family. In the past, letters would be sent through the mail.

After the family receives the letter, important family members deliberate and come up with negotiation dates that best suit them. They then write a response letter to the groom/bride’s family. The letter indicates when they would like the bride/groom’s family members to visit.

Some response letters will tell the family what to bring or what to expect. However, most cultures do not go into detail. The bride/groom-to-be can ask their partner what to expect. Usually, a percentage of the bridewealth is paid during the negotiations
