The Great Central Railway (GCR) Class 11F or Improved Director Class is a class of 4-4-0 steam locomotive designed by John G. Robinson for passenger work. Built between 1919-1924 35 members of the Improved Director Class were built. The 11F Class was initially used on passenger work on the GCR system, including fast expresses from Sheffield Victoria to London Marylebone. Later in their careers, they were used on short distance passenger trains. On lines of the Cheshire Lines Committee during the late 1940s and early 1950s, they hauled expresses between Manchester Central and Liverpool Central; also semi-fast trains from Manchester Central via Northwich to Chester Northgate. Later, when the class was inherited by the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) they were reclassified as D11's, they carried this classification well into British Railways (BR) days, withdrawals of the class started in 1958 and ended in 1962, of the 35 locomotives built only one is preserved, number 506 "Butler-Henderson", it was preserved as a part of the UK National Collection, however the engine is on static display, number 506 is also the only remaining passenger engine from the GCR; not bad for a 4-4-0.
