You sigh and plop down onto the stool, wanting to just get this over with already, another chore that came with starting at a new school. The school photographer gets ready to push down the shutter button.

“Wait!”

The blonde you noticed hanging out with the other 2nd-years earlier jogs over to you. She takes off your glasses and sets them to the side before tucking the loose strands of your hair behind your ear. You feel your heart flutter at the touch of her fingertips brushing across the sides of your face.

“You’re going to be stuck with this ID picture for the next 3 years, y’know.” You look up at her and the way her long blonde hair falls perfectly over her shoulders as she smooths your hair back one final time. “There! You look pretty.”

She rushes back to the camera to check the frame. The photographer rolls his eyes. “I don’t have all day here.”

Ignoring him, she calls to you, “Okay, just tilt your head a little bit to the left.”

She gives you a thumbs up. The photographer stops glaring at the blonde to finally take your picture.

“Okay, hurry up now, next!” he calls out.

She makes her way over to where you are to take her spot, but not before beaming at you. “I’m Mary by the way.”

The cool thing about being an artist is seeing art EVERYWHERE. Like until I started painting I never really noticed set design and outfits and all that fun stuff but now it’s the first thing I see which makes everything SO FUN AND COOL but that’s not the point of this post this is the intro paragraph motherfuckers. I’ve got you now keep going

So you know what’s an art form? WRITING (“obviously writing is an art form threefuckencrows. Make your point” IM GETTING THERE).

Some writing is more art than other writing. And I think the more I read books (for context, I read A TON when I was younger and barely touch books now—I’m really picky and it’s hard to find stuff I like) and find my taste the more I’ve found that the type of books I like just have pretty writing. Consider, for a moment, The Dreamer Trilogy by Maggie Stiefvater. I have never posted about this but it’s one of my all time favourite series’ and if you liked the raven boys oh boy. Oh boy oh boy. Anyways. The dreamer trilogy is a book series. This is an indisputable fact. It is also a work of art. Not in the metaphorical ‘it’s so amazing’ way, as in that is art just like any painting in a museum. Every word, every sentence is a brushstroke and a fucking masterclass in being good at telling a story. You can’t read that then read Harry styles x y/n on wattpad. You can’t. It’s not possible. So what’s the point here? The point is that. A good book may have a good plot, and good characters, and those are super important. But the writing should make you FEEL. Consider, also, vicious by VE schwab. I have made 1 post about this series and it was 30 minutes ago, so sorry for the total shift from the scheduled program but I promise we’ll be back on track soon (or maybe not. This is MY account after all and my brain works like a janky office computer in the early 2000s). The use of blackout poetry? The voices being so distinct and the symmetry of chapters paralleling each other?? I EAT THAT SHIT UPPP YALL

I obviously am not a writer. I can write a persuasive research essay for English class, or a really strange rambly tumblr post, but that’s not the writing I love. Here is a comprehensive list of Writing Is Art books that I love and hope someone else will tell me they also love so I feel like I’m not screaming to the Internet void:

1. The dreamer trilogy (as mentioned. Book 1 less than the other two but still all gorgeous)

3. The Kingdom of back, Marie Lu. Guys. When this came out I was WAITING for it to get the hype it deserved but I swear I’ve seen 1 fanart and no discourse. Where’s the insanity?? Plspls read it’s so iconic

"I'm just saying that if you looked at it from my perspective-"

"Shut up, California."

With a sigh California walks out of the kitchen an into the living room, clearly upset.

"Shoulda known arguin' wit' Texas in the kitchen was a bad idea."

"Oh! Hey, Maryland. I... didn't see you there. What are you doing?"

"Waitin' for ya. I was hopin' you could explain sum' to me."

"Oh, for sure! What is it?"

"Have a seat."

California sits down in a chair across from Mary.

"Oh, and ya might wanna make sure ya got some time on your hands. I suspect this'll take a while."

"Um.... okay????"

meanwhile

"Loui, this is taking too loooong."

"Patience, sha. Distract yourself."

"How?"

"Go bother Gov or sum', I don't know."

"Loui, you're a genius."

A few hours later

"So. Basically. Anythang connected to that whole 'Internet of Things' can be uh.... what was the word?"

"Optimized."

"Right. Optimized. To make sure it runs properly? And that it's running the best it can?"

"Yup."

"And they're all connected to the same network?"

"Yup."

"So the casino can access ev'rthang from one spot to make their lives easier?"

"You got it!"

"Sounds nifty. Now, if only we did that here..."

"Yeah but it can be a huge security risk."

"Is that so?"

"Yeah, so basically"

meanwhile

"Loui, this is taking too loooooooooooong."

"Patience, sha. Remember? Distract yourself. 4/20 passed recently. See what Colorado's up to."

"Loui, you're a genius."

Another hour later

"So because all those thangs are connected, any of 'em can be an entry point for hackin'?"

"Yeah."

"Even the fish tank thermometer?"

"Even the fish tank thermometer."

"Can you prevent 'em from being hacked?"

"Oh, yeah. A strong enough firewall will stop anything."

"A... firewall?"

"Yeah, so basically"

"Loui, this is taking too loooooooooooooong."

"It won't be much longer. Let's go get sum' to eat."

30 minutes later

"Okay so the 'Internet of Things' connects and optimizes ev'rythang but also makes ev'rythang a target of hackin'. The hackin' is preventable but the danger is still there because no one would think to protect a fish tank thermometer. Is that right?"

"Yeah you got it! Nice job, Maryland. If only the other states learned like you. Especially the ones down south if you know what I mean, haha."

California is laughing. Maryland smiles politely.

"Bless your heart, 'Fornia. Thank ya for helpin' me."

"Yeah, no problem. Why'd you ask about this in the first place?"

"I was thinkin' we should upgrade all the casinos near the nation's capitol. Might bring in more money."

"Oh, okay. Well, I'll see you around."

California leaves. Maryland watches him go and shakes his head.

"That poor boy c'ain't make no friends no way."

YEAHH stories that know they’re stories and characters that know they’re characters.. i gotcha! here are some things that have made me think more/differently about what it means to be inside a story:

mocked with death: tragic overliving from sophocles to milton by emily wilson: this is wilson’s dissertation thesis and i really loved it despite having not read a lot of the tragedies she discussed. 10/10 self-aware characters who want to die but know the story won’t let them

antigone by jean anouilh: anouilh’s adaptation of antigone is a super short read and really heavily emphasizes the feeling you get a lot in tragedies that characters have no choice but to play the parts they have been assigned

moby dick: obligatory moby dick plug <3 every character in this book is like oh no i’m in a tragedy and i can’t get out and it IS delicious. also points for a lot of stuff about the relationship between man and the sea that feels like it’s in conversation with black sails 

when the lambs rise up against the birds of prey by anne boyer: short anne boyer piece that knocks my socks off whenever i read it <3

the madwoman in the attic: the woman writer and the nineteenth-century literary imagination by sandra m. gilbert and susan gubar: simply LISTEN TO THIS. “imaginative and sensitive, catherine genuinely believes that she can become the heroine of her own life story, that she can author herself, and thereby define and control reality. but, like mary shelley’s monster, she must finally come to terms with herself as a creature of someone else’s making, a character trapped inside an uncongenial plot.”

hadestown soundtrack: retelling of the orpheus and eurydice myth that KNOWS it’s a retelling of the orpheus and eurydice myth. also it bops, stream her on spotify

russian doll: time loop hours babey! what happens when characters not only find out they’re in a story, but also realize that the story is responding to their actions and they can manipulate the outcome by working together?? cinema, that’s what.

the truman show: nothing is more delicious than watching a character become self-aware in real time and then break out of his narrative prison. 11/10 film

hopefully that’s a good mix of nonfiction, fiction, visual and audio media ! all of the readings should be pretty easy to find copies of online but if u have trouble lmk and i can get u a link <3 i will also link you to my tag for stories that intentionally trap their characters/characters who Know they are being trapped bc there might be some helpful stuff in there ! and this post and this post whose tags might have some suggestions of stuff i haven’t gotten around to yet. also if anyone else has suggestions for stuff along these lines plz put them in tags/comments ! hopefully this helps a bit <3

Sky - so since seraphina’s a newer racer, she and marivana don’t know each other super well? but they’re almost complete opposites, in terms of like racing specialties, and marivana doesn’t feel threatened by seraphina in any way. she probably keeps her distance whenever they aren’t doing things their agency has sent them on? 

It would be kind of fun to say that maybe, as a publicity stunt, twilight’s official statement is that snow has been mentoring sky behind the scenes? 

and they have to pretend that’s true, even though it’s not lol

LOL but it would be funny if one day marivana showed up at the track while seraphina was doing stuff and was just like, “so twilight wants me to teach you something that makes it look like i’ve actually been helping u. u free atm?”

but overall I don’t think marivana has too many strong opinions about seraphina, unless we want to create some kind of drama?

Ice - premade; tbd

Supernova - Marivana is…pretty indifferent? when it comes to Supernova. She knows who she is and what she’s done, of course-who doesn’t?-but if you think that she’d be starstruck and/or falling over herself when Supernova’s around her…well, you’d be wrong. Marivana’s had multiple trusted parties tell her that she’s just as good as Supernova was, at her peak, so she knows that she’s not a threat-for now, at least. Marivana’s a bit wary of the other racer, but also a bit curious to see as to where this comeback will lead.

So, depending on how much of the wedding and divorce was public....Marivana def would remember 1) the wedding, and 2) not giving a shit about it

The 2 of them have raced together, right at the very beginning of Marivana’s career? like 10+ years ago? and if As even remembers all that girly snow princess stuff, she could be like “lmao so twilight really pulled a 180 on her”

AHHHH so I know I never made this explicitly clear because I suck as a human being but - the deal with unicorns is that agencies/manufacturers/etc say that they’re just robots? agencies probably actually believe it, but in terms of the manufacturers they might be vaguely aware of otherwise but also don’t want to jeopardize any profits so they keep that shit on the DL

but obviously for ppl like Mari/As who have been riding for p much their entire life, they can tell when horses are distressed, happy/content, etc?

and robot unicorns are basically horses in terms of how sentient they are? 

so i have no fucking idea when this would happen, but the 2 of them mutually acknowledging that RUR is pretty fucked up for the unicorns?

Flower - Marivana knows exactly what 𝑅 𝐼 𝒮 𝐸 is pulling with Flower (her own agency did the same thing to her, after all), and she is not fooled at all. She’s not stupid; in the robot unicorn racing industry, nobody is completely, utterly unknown when they debut unless they had no prior experience with robot horses/unicorns in the past. Marivana knows that Flower probably had to work her butt off to stay with 𝑅 𝐼 𝒮 𝐸, and she would bet her right hand that the image that Flower puts out to the public is just that - an image.

Flame - Marivana knows about 1) the image that she projects, and 2) that this image is pretty true to who Flame really is, for the most part. Her verdict? Flame could prove to be annoying, if she gets relevant while Marivana is still in the industry as a racer. Marivana doesn’t know what life not racing would be like, but she’s well-aware that she’s the oldest racer out there (well, besides Supernova, who doesn’t count. She’s making a comeback, after all), and that retirement is probably not too far out in her future. So, if Flame is still around within the next 5-10 years, then Marivana might start worrying about her. For now, she’s just the irritating racer with ʟᴀᴢᴇʀ who won’t ever stop causing a scene.

So they haven’t really interacted much yet, do we wanna say? 

they’re wary of each other because both their unicorns specialize in high power/strength so they’re like, more directly in competition?

are they going to engage in the RUA equivalent of a twitter fight??? in a publicity stunt that both of their agencies are putting on?

maybe snow has once insulted kehlani in an interview??? though it was fake/staged/scripted by her agency so she doesn’t actaully feel that way but ya know. doin it for the vine

and kehlani responds in kind, maybe at the behest of lazer, maybe not?. and it just keeps going???

but ya, marivana prob finds her personality kinda annoying so would generally avoid her unless kehlani approached first

Nyx - so like, snow probably thinks sol is way too flashy and all over the place, & does not engage her ever? she knows of the rumors of foul play, ofc, b/c who doesn’t, but she assumes that the rumors are super blown out of proportion (as rumors tend to be)?? and snow knows that if sol ever tries to target her/other ice world racers specifically, twilight will literally strong-arm lazer into dropping her. so she’s not that worried about that stuff????

definitely thinks her razor-sharp precision with U-800 is something to be admired, though, even if it’s not the flashiest skill like dressage or speed

OMG LOL spoiler alert but the 2nd event is a race on lava world, so they’re all on the main LW training/practice facilities in the days leading up to the race???? and we TOTALLY need to have them do that weirdly super aggressive staredown/pre-game smack talk sesh that they do in super extra sports anime LOL

Widowmaker - snow’s heard of her, knows of her, has competed against her, but since they both tend to keep to themselves they haven’t really talked? it could be potentially cool if eleni guessed about/found out about what actually happened with marivana’s 1st unicorn?? OMG DRAMA but what if she actually knew of the armed thief? who was on ice world for whatever reason lmfao we can hand-wave it. bonus points if she’s pissed that 1st unicorn killed the person?????????? lol

Lily Lolo – Lily Lolo will forever have my heart. I think the biggest compliment you can give a natural mascara is that it performs like a high end mascara. The wand on this mascara is like a traditional mascara want and hasn’t steered me wrong yet!

W3ll People – Another really well performing mascara in the green beauty world! This wand is more rounded and the brush is made out of plastic/rubber.

Eyeliner

Pencil – The Ere Perez Jojoba Pencil is what you should try if you apply your eyeliner with a pencil! It comes in 8 different color choices and the formula is spot on: creamy but long lasting.

Lipstick

SKINCARE MUST-HAVES

Josh Rosebrook Nutrient Day Cream –if I could write a love note to this product, I would. I have been using this for years as my morning moisturizer and sunscreen (it’s 15 SPF) and it’s incredible. It has a cult following and it definitely deserves it!

Herbivore Blue Tansy Mask – I consider this one of my luxury masks and I absolute adore putting this on, sipping some tea and reading a book. It leaves my skin glowing and visibly less red!

Patyka Mask – I find my skin can use a light exfoliant once or twice a week and this Patyka Mask does the trick! It has tiny little scrubbing beads that help to remove dead skin cells leaving your skin looking fresh.

Herbivore Jasmine Body Oil – If the fact that I’m on my third bottle of this in 6 months isn’t any indication, I adore this body oil! If you love the smell of jasmine, you need this in your life. Also it makes my skin literally glow!

GREEN BEAUTY HAIRCARE SWAPS

Kahina Argan Oil – A lot of people use argan oil on their skin, but it’s also fantastic for your hair! I use this in between washes to keep my curls looking silky and less frizzy

EVOLVH Wonderbalm – You’ve heard me rave about this product and for good reason! It’s an all-natural gel that controls frizz without leaving your hair feeling crunchy. See how I use it here!

EVOLVH Leave-In Conditioner – Another one of my go-to hair products. I use it in this video to style my curly hair and have found that it leaves my hair smooth and healthy in between haircuts!

Honestly, this post could go on for days. I have so many more masks and random other products I could add but I *tried* to keep it simple. If you’re interested in going deeper into Green Beauty, LMK and I’ll work on a few more posts for ya! My biggest piece of advice? Be patient. Don’t feel like you need to swap out all of your products at once. This stuff takes time so do it in baby steps and please, try to enjoy it! When you view it as an experiment rather than a burden, you may even become a green beauty addict…not that I have any experience in that 😉
