Since I've done each band's first story now I did this character sorter! For now my results are:

There isn't really anyone I dislike; the higher ranked characters were just more compelling. Bandwise I was right that depression gang would really appeal to me, but Wonderland x Showtime and More More Jump's stories were also really great despite their aesthetics not grabbing me at all. Vivid Bad Squad is also great, and Leo/need feels bland compared to everyone else but still wasn't bad.

I didn't expect to like the characters this much. Maybe it's because everyone but Miku only interacts with other characters? In LLSIF, iirc, the in-app story content* was shallow and had everyone interacting with a player self-insert, and in Genshin it feels like a lot revolves around the player character too. Presumably it's to encourage parasocial attachment to characters, but the writing suffers when it feels like everyone primarily exists to make you feel good and want to pull them. Not that Genshin doesn't have a lot going for it, of course, but it was refreshing going back to media where that stuff isn't a priority.

I expect there will still be limits on how unpleasant PRSK characters can be/how far certain plotlines and themes can go/etc. It's still a gacha game; they're not going to make anyone unmarketable or make the player think much. But I'm glad it's avoiding the above! It spends time developing everyone's relationships with each other instead, which is much more interesting.

*The LL anime is decent though.
