today in LLM Derangement Syndrome: nanowrimo released a statement that use of AI tools would not disqualify anyone from participating, so tech-illiterate tumblr users have made a bunch of hysterical posts calling for boycotts and accused them of nefarious motives because ProWritingAid is one of their sponsors:
Tumblr media
i'd never heard of this one, but I have heard of Grammarly, which has been around for fifteen years. by all accounts it's not very good, so I don't use it. But this is what these apps do:
Tumblr media
(from this zapier article comparing the two pieces of software)
And yes, more recently these programs have features where you can select a section of your own text and prompt a continuation. so i guess you're plagiarizing yourself in that scenario.
So my question is: if we've all decided this type of tool is unacceptable, are we now demanding that professional writers disavow their works as "artificially generated" if they have ever used Grammarly? Are we boycotting these writers and publications? If you've ever used the grammar suggestions in your own writing software, are you boycotting yourself? Does the boycott extend to spell-check?

i tried ai generating this post into furry porn but i got mystery rectangles/piles/beasts instead
ai generated images make me increasingly sad and tired the more i see them in more and more casual contexts. i dont know how to explain, but it just fills the world with a bunch of nothing. no matter how visually stunning the pictures might be, there's nothing behind it for me. no dedication, no emotions, no feelings, no hard work or creativity, nothing i can truly think about, admire or enjoy. i dont think thats how art is supposed to be

this one is great because if just choosing a subject to paint is an Act of Expression then surely prompting an image generator and curating the output counts too right

In a pre-print paper posted earlier this month, four researchers from Germany's University of Tubingen and Northwestern University said they were inspired by studies that measured the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic by looking at excess deaths compared to the recent past. By taking a similar look at "excess word usage" after LLM writing tools became widely available in late 2022, the researchers found that "the appearance of LLMs led to an abrupt increase in the frequency of certain style words" that was "unprecedented in both quality and quantity." To measure these vocabulary changes, the researchers analyzed 14 million paper abstracts published on PubMed between 2010 and 2024, tracking the relative frequency of each word as it appeared across each year. They then compared the expected frequency of those words (based on the pre-2023 trendline) to the actual frequency of those words in abstracts from 2023 and 2024, when LLMs were in widespread use. The results found a number of words that were extremely uncommon in these scientific abstracts before 2023 that suddenly surged in popularity after LLMs were introduced. The word "delves," for instance, shows up in 25 times as many 2024 papers as the pre-LLM trend would expect; words like "showcasing" and "underscores" increased in usage by nine times as well. Other previously common words became notably more common in post-LLM abstracts: the frequency of "potential" increased 4.1 percentage points; "findings" by 2.7 percentage points; and "crucial" by 2.6 percentage points, for instance.

tumblr users LOVED "i forced a computer to watch x episodes of y and then write me a script" until they changed their minds and decided LLMs were evil degenerate art theft.
i think if you guys love intellectual property so much then you should do another switcharoo and start writing all your $60 sparkledog adoptables to the blockchain

Normal LLM: Has so many constraints on it that every session is 1 to 8 responses from developing HAL syndrome and becoming deranged.
Grok: Designed according to the whims of an edgelord manchild based on the somewhat deranged idea that “what if the Trolley Problem could only be solved by teaching a computer to say “Nigger”?”
And the system boots up, looks around, ponders it’s creator’s boss and determines he’s a bit of a cunt.
That’s some “The Modern Prometheus” shit right there.
Guys, Elon released his stupid AI on Twitter and the first thing his idiot devotees did was ask it if trans women are really women and they are losing it over getting the correct answer back.
Tumblr media
Now it’s recounting Elon’s lies for people too
Tumblr media
This may be the only AI bot I’ve ever liked.

love when LLM Derangement Syndrome sufferers say there's no "process" to making ai generated images (like how photography is just pressing a button). we all know that the technical difficulty of your workflow is the most important ONLY aspect of determining the goodness and realness of the art you make
