13 for the writer's ask?
I read your tmnt work but really, any fandom you'd like to share too.
Question 13: What are some must-read fanfics in your fandoms? Why do you admire these, and how have they impacted your works?
Question 19: How has your experience as a fanfic reader impacted your experience as a fanfic writer?
13: Oh, my goodness. Listen. I have read and fallen in love with more fics than I can shake a stick at. I've been reading for a very long time, but I will give you as best an answer as I can. Please be aware that some of these fics are NSFW, and some of them I don't know if they are still up, it's been so long since I looked for them. edit: I limited it to ten, because I could feel myself spiraling down memory lane.
If you aren't familiar with @tmnt-tychou When Leo Met Mona, you should start there, since I'm gonna assume since you're asking me you are in the TMNT fandom. - I love her work and the way she writes romances with the turtles, and I know she's impacted my writing because I have a whole fic that has one of her characters in it.
I have really enjoyed @afreakingdork 's work, TMNT fandom as well - they're one of those writers that twists things in interesting ways and withholds information, and I love how I'm always kept on my toes while reading.
Oh, Son of A- by StrivingArtist on AO3, Hobbit fandom (Fili/reader) - I love this story simply because the author took a long break in the middle, and then came back and finished it. It's completed, and the story is funny as all get out. Took that 'modern girl falls into middle earth trope' and knocked it out of the ballpark. I still cackle over it.
Eidolon by Llanval on AO3, Marvel fandom- unfinished, but poetic, the imagery and storytelling is startlingly haunting. I would go out on a limb and say the author was a fan of E.T. Hoffman.
Alabanza by brandyllyn on A03, star wars (Poe/reader) - it's just a romance that really stuck with me, and I thought it had a really interesting take on how Poe actually meets reader.
Lost Valor; Forgotten Stars by rinskiroo on AO3, star wars (Poe/ofc) - this is a fic that I still don't understand fully to this day, but I know it was drawing on lore from multiple points in star wars history. I would read it again, probably will this weekend. Really highlights the difference between the resistance and the rebellion.
Earning my Wings by warqueenfuriosa on AO3, star wars (poe/reader) - I really connected with this reader, and gosh darn this fic is just funny. and believable.
anything shootybangbang on AO3 writes. They were someone I found while deep into red dead, because we both explored the same imagery on the duality of man and beast. The way they write poetry into their stories is just mesmerizing.
We Were Only Ever Stardust by PardonMyManners on AO3, rogue one fandom - oh this one made me cry. I was really into how the RO fandom took star crossed lovers and found family and just drove a knife into everyone's heart with it
Theres a whole rogue one series by angel_deux on A03 that starts with a fic called Hard to be Soft. I found it 6 days after the movie released and read the whole thing whenever I could. Another one I'll have to reread soon.
19: Well, reading fanfic is how I became a fanfic writer, and definitely played a part in how I’ve gotten better at writing. To be very blunt, what I consumed usually found its way into my own writing. There were definitely fics that I read that made me realize what I did and did not like, and there were just as many ideas that captured my imagination as those I shunned. There were writers whose style I admired, who twisted words and withheld information in a way that caught my interest. There were characterizations I had no care for, for sure, and moments where I didn’t fully understand what the writer was trying to get across to their audience, but on a whole I always felt there was something to learn from whatever I had decided to read, and my writing responded like a puzzle picked from many different people over many different years.
I feel like this answer is maybe a bit meandering and not very precise, but please be aware I’ve been reading fanfic for almost two whole decades, across fandoms and platforms, and so I don’t remember things very vividly, but my writing is a timeline of who I was at the time.

So I’m guessing that as far as the Loki fandom goes, I’m pretty much the last person to the Eidolon party (by @llanval), but oh my god, guys. The idea of ‘what if Loki grew up as Laufey’s son’ is amazing enough, but the scope is epic, in the most genuine sense of the word, and this is the most incredibly mythic writing I’ve ever read. It is so, so soothing and wonderful, and anybody who hasn’t read it yet should check it out and love these characters (especially Helblindi and Arngrimr) with me.

@llanval said: I totally get that. Is it to move in a new direction? Or just put some space between you and a writing style (or fandom) you no longer enjoy?
It’s kinda both tying in with each other? Like, I want to explore a more character-driven narrative with more attention to detail. My previous way of telling stories was okay, but lacked the depth of my original stuff, especially due to my tendency to stick to the canon in all the wrong aspects, and it’s annoying me to no end retrospectively.
I also want to focus on building up my own canon-verse more. So far, I’ve only strewn hints about it, which bogged my stories down instead of enhancing them while also dragging them down to average level at the same time, so they kinda drowned in the endless ocean that is AO3. Or, plainly put, my stuff doesn’t really hit a nerve in fandom because I didn’t manage to blend the official canon with my headcanons smoothly enough for my stories to be enjoyable.
#galactic replies#llanval#fandoms stay the same though#as much as i bitch and moan about them: bioware still owns my ass#especially dragon age#i won't do anything for me:a yet because i still need to build up my canon-verse for that#because let's be real: no way i'm gonna stick to the official canon for that#there was too much handled wrong in that

@llanval jdgkshf Bimbo Fett...
But yeah, exactly, all of this.
I don't know if you saw my reactions to the Boba wangst arc but it gave me a goddamn aneurysm. The sheer fucking horror of Ponds and company staying behind to protect their brothers and succeeding and then shot like dogs while they're laying there injured? And not a hint of all this happening purposefully because the rest of the episode is "Lassie is driving the car!" R2 mascot shenanigans!? Jesus fucking christ. Those episodes just made me fucking hate Boba Fett and his selfish ass more than ever.
It's been beyond disappointing that the clones are irrelevant in...the Clone Wars show. This is part of why I never watched it when it aired; it seemed to have way too much focus on Ahsoka and what I wanted was, you know...the clones. Shame that I've got to time-travel back and tell my sixteen-year-old self that all her instincts were right.
Mortis was bizarre. It felt like a Star Trek episode with the numbers filed off, where the "gods" are revealed to be jackass aliens who think they're hot shit. And I was groaning so hard that it fell back on the most basic stereotypes of good father/nice woman/mean man. Just a mess.

A question about a post :)
Hello! I was doing some research about jotuns lately and regarding some things about their horns or if they even have any. I came across your post about Loki wearing warrior horns and how jotuns go out to hunt an animal and wear the horns from the animal they kill as a sign of distinction and honor or something like that? I found it very interesting but I was wondering if you thought of that on your own or if not, where you got that information from? Chao, Sierra
--
First, the post in question. Second, the fanfic it’s for, as well as this little branch off in the same universe.
Now to answer :) For the most part, I made it up. The foundation is in the myths, obviously, with Aurgelmir and Audumbla and so on, but also I wanted to play with the horned Jotnar idea that sprang up in the Marvel Thor fandom at the time. (I believe that originated from the fanfic Eidolon by Llanval.) In the first Thor film it’s obvious the Jotnar don’t have horns, but due to Loki’s horned helmet wedged into ‘raised on Jotunheim’ AUs, the idea spread. I wanted to use the symbol of Loki’s horns (and a reason he would have them) without breaking film canon and giving actual horns to the Jotnar.
So...symbolic horns of the Jotnar in iconography and religion. It made sense to me at the time xD

Yesterday was a HELL of a day. In an anxiety fugue, I definitely did cases for four books and two mini-books? That was a Lot and I don't think I'll do that again, haha
First, look at these tiny little books, these are cute as HELL
Next, I've bound 'And I Alone Have Escaped To Tell You' before, but it only deserves the best, and this batik has a very outer space feel
Llanval's 'Eidolon' is unfinished and hasn't updated since, uh, 2012, but what's there is great, and I can PROBABLY safely assume that there won't be a new chapter posted that will force me to start over :p
And finally, 'The Disabled Tyrant's Pet Palm Fish', in two parts, because this thing is a beast

I just saw the vid for cc and I'm disappointed too. It hardly seems like a step up from Inquisition and that's kinda frustrating. I wish you luck on your PC hunting, if that's the route you choose. I have a bad feeling ME:A is going to disappoint some folks. :'(
Thank you, but I will definitely buy a PS4 since I also want to play Horizon: Zero Dawn, which is an exclusive title. Besides, my sister’s dad said that I can borrow from his rather extensive PS4 game collection whenever I want, so I’ll save a ton of money. But man, I’ll still be salty about ME:A’s CC for ages, even if the game turns out to be overall good (which I really hope but also kinda doubt because Bioware).
#oh and also i fare better with a console because the controller is easier on my bad hand#using a mouse is almost impossible for me at this point and i was never really good with playing with the keyboard controls#the witch replies#llanval
