MUSIC MONDAY: "AfroZeppelin" - A Rhythm & Blues-Filled Led Zeppelin Collection (LISTEN)
by Marlon West (FB: marlon.west1 Twitter: @marlonw IG: stlmarlonwest Spotify: marlonwest) Happy Labor Day, y’all! It is no toil for me to offer up another playlist on this holiday Monday. After June’s AfroBowie collection, our editor-in-chief, Lori Lakin Hutcherson, suggested a few more in a series of collections of rock musicians inspired by and in collaboration with Black artists. So here is…

We’re almost 300 episodes in, so it was about time we tried out doing interviews, right? Our guest today is a friend of the show, and yes we say that about lots of people who don’t actually know us, but this guy is an actual friend of the show! He’s a DJ, a music producer, and an independent artist. If you’ve seen Gen V, you’ve heard his song “Body Talk” in the FIRST episode! It’s DJ D’Auria! Check out our new episode as D’Auria tells us about staying independent, getting noticed by a major tv show, and what it’s like to hear your music in a scene where someone almost bleeds out (this is the universe of The Boys, after all). You can also find us on Spotify and Apple Podcasts!

was tagged by @slowwshoww and i want to preface this with: you wanted music recs but i am very public on this blog abt my very strangely limited music taste so this is on u and now u have to deal with it. that being said though, I’m gonna give u some reasons for each song 🙏
i was tagged to post the first 10 songs of my on repeat playlist and here they are
1. chung ha - i’m ready (club banger, like its just good gay club music, chung ha is such a fucking star its wild)
2. stray kids - stop (weird old deep cut from skz discography that sounds like if u mix minimal techno with a kpop impression of imagine dragons and weirdly goes extremely hard bc of it)
3. key - gasoline (listen like. this song is like the platonic ideal of a kpop song to me. which isnt to say it’s the best one but like its such a good illustration of what a lot of kpop sounds like today. like a little cringe on first listen, a bit of rap you dont really wanna deal with, some belting in between but after listening to it like twice it’ll be stuck in your head and the beat/background instrumental/hook is just FUN)
4. zakwe - music (Zakwe is like the godfather of south african rap from what i gather and i REALLY have to ask all of u to listen to it just ONCE if youve never heard someone rap in zulu, that shit is INSANE. This song was made in 2011 and his wikipedia says he once opened for kanye west so 2011 kanye gives you a decent idea of what this song sounds like)
5. Han from Stray Kids - RUN (i love him. its a really good song)
6. kehlani - piece of Mind (i love this fucking kehlani record sooooo much and this song is so painful imo but also very lovely in many ways)
7. bruce springsteen - tenth avenue freeze-out (listen like. I have never been able to resist some good horns OR a great saxophone and this song has both. is it a little cringe? yes. all the best bruce springsteen songs are.)
8. Stray Kids - The Tortoise and the Hare (top 3 skz songs ever made. insane experimental rap thing they made kind of mangling a korean childrens rhyme as well as the fable of the tortoise and the hare obv)
9. taemin - press your number (listen if you only ever listen to one kpop song in ur entire life make it a taemin song and dont just listen but watch the mv is my opinion. not this one tbh, it’s just the one I’m currently obsessed with)
10. stray kids - easy (also top 10 skz songs easy (lol) its just so good. the rap is there the beat is there the vibe goes hard, the choreo also slaps if ur inclined to look at the mv)
i tag @wantbytaemin @hyunpic @bourgeoix @alexenglish @biolums @geniaparadox @mybodyfails and thats everyone i can think of rn but also u guys dont have to give commentary 🙏

For the music asks: 1, 5, 12, and 28 🤗
1 - A song you like with a color in the title
youtube
this song has the double whammy of coming to mind when I'm thinking of colours AND fabrics, and I'm glad for it, as I'm a sucker for this kind of sound.
5 - A song that needs to be played LOUD
youtube
honestly this is more like 'song that needs to heard LIVE' but until that can happen, I'll settle for blasting out my house speakers.
12 - A song from your preteen years
youtube
thought I'd skip the greatest pop hits of the generation and go for my island jams :')
28 - A song by an artist with a voice that you love
youtube
I remember the first time I heard this song I felt the voice settle around me like a warm bath and it was like the gentlest, loveliest jumpscare of me scrambling to find out 'WHO IS SINGING?' Lizz Wright has that perfect understated combo of depth, softness and richness that suits these sorts of songs perfectly. I also really love When I Fall... augh. chefs kiss.

Forgotten days, a fading memory Lost and no longer seeking one another Desperately still, you're reaching toward him Hopelessly certain you can mend the broken Longing for a light lost in time, so distant

"When you want a great show, it's not 'entertaining' the audience - it's you sharing with them... an experience of communion," says Lizz Wright. "Music is primal: when it's done without pretension, you can feel the shape of someone's soul."
Through a voice that The New York Times describes as "a smooth, dark alto possessed of qualities you might associate with barrel-aged bourbon or butter-soft leather," vocalist and songwriter Lizz Wright sings with a soaring reflection of the cultural fabric of America.
"I've followed my voice rather than forcing it to emerge."
I became a Lizz Wright fan when my friend, Carol, turned me on to her rendition of Nina Simone's
"Seems I'm Never Tired Lovin' You."  You can feel the emotion she pours into every note of this ballad. Lizz Wright's 20-year career transcended social divides with her offer of love and a deep sense of humanity. She told NPR she is a big Otis Redding fan and finds inspiration
in how he leaned into a song's lyrics.. "
He sounds like he's always at the end of a long day, and he just won't give up. I just love his wearied devotion — that beautiful, beautiful, weathered sound."She first made a name for herself nationally as a vocalist with a touring concert tribute to Billie Holiday. Lizz Wright released her debut album, Salt, on Verve Records, which topped Billboard's contemporary jazz charts. On Concord, Lizz Wright released Freedom & Surrender (2016)—featuring the single "Lean In," which landed on President Obama's Summer 2016 playlist—and Grace (2017).
"I started really opening up as a songwriter and an interpreter and taking songs from all kinds of genres and stripping them down to just lyrics and the story inside the lyrics, and trying to make them really mine."Lizz Wright launched her own independent record company, Blues & Greens Records a few years ago. She released the album Shadow, which features five of her original compositions and
celebrates the intimacy of romantic love, loss, community, and healing.
She avoids pigeonholing her music taste and instead listens to and appreciates all types of music. "What I like is not a particular genre; it's storytelling," says Lizz Wright. "There's a lot of great storytelling in jazz, folk, and country music."
