Page 2: Brad Pitt kicked married galpal Nicole Poturalski to the curb after getting flak from his ex Angelina Jolie -- Brad’s relationship with Nicole hit the skids after Brad decided he needed to shore up his image during his ongoing custody battle with Angie and his focus right now is to get his dad image back on track and give Angie no more ammo to fling back at him
Page 3: Tiger Woods’ romance with Erica Herman has gone off course over legal troubles and wedding pressure and bickering over where to live and Tiger is so fed up he’s considering ditching his nagging girlfriend in Florida and moving back to his native California -- Erica’s been pressuring him to put a ring on it ever since she moved into his Jupiter Island mansion and that’s something he just won’t do and she’s already taken over his household buying new furniture and remodeling the master bath and building a new closet and hiring a gourmet chef -- California is looking better and better to Tiger who only moved to Florida to play on its tough Bermuda grass which helped improve his swing but now Tiger’s ex Elin lives in Florida with their two kids
Page 4: Miranda Lambert is scoffing at ex Blake Shelton’s newly announced engagement to Gwen Stefani and she’s convinced Blake’s third walk down the aisle has failure written all over it because she thinks Blake’s bad to the bone and this marriage will wind up being a total disaster and after the hell Blake put her through Miranda can’t imagine his life with Gwen would be any different, lifelong bachelor Simon Cowell has had a change of heart since his horrific August accident and he’s finally ready to tie the knot with baby mama Lauren Silverman -- after spinal surgery to repair his broken back the entertainment mogul feels lucky to be alive and walking and the one constant in his difficult rehab after surgery has been Lauren and he wants to pay her back with a ring
Page 5: Train-wreck Wendy Williams’ wacky behavior has TV producers scrambling behind the scenes to find her replacement after her unhinged performance on a recent episode of her talk show where she slurred her words and rambled incoherently -- there had been a hope a chatfest helmed by Nick Cannon could be a safety net should the daytime diva who spent a stint in a sober living house last year not be able to continue hosting but plans for that were pushed back after the comic made anti-Semitic rants in a podcast -- they also tried Jerry O’Connell when Wendy was out for three weeks last year but he tanked with viewers -- Wendy’s a mess and it remains to be seen how long producers will be able to put up with her problems before they decide to pull the plug
Page 6: Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo hinted that she may be making her final rounds -- Ellen who has starred on the show since 2005 and makes $20 million a year admitted she’s considering slipping out of her scrubs after the current season 17 but her departure could spell the end of the beloved series and show creator Shonda Rhimes has said it’s unlikely the show could continue without her but Ellen has also expressed her desire to spend more time with her husband and their three children
Page 7: Mariah Carey’s brother Morgan blasted her memoir as filled with lies and distortions and he’s considering legal action -- the book called Morgan and sister Alison her ex-brother and ex-sister and Mariah wrote Morgan had a long history of violence and when she was six he slammed their mother into a wall -- Mariah also wrote her siblings and mother were heartless in terms of dealing with her as a human being and once she got famous they started treating her like an ATM with a wig on but Morgan is fighting back and looking to hire a lawyer
Page 8: Reese Witherspoon’s marriage to Jim Toth is in the muck after the stunning collapse of his new business venture and tensions are mounting in the Hollywood power couple’s already troubled union now that the streaming service Quibi crumbled after less than six months leaving content acquisition president Jim out of work while Reese’s star continues to rise and there’s a real balance of power that’s been building up and that’s put a serious strain on the relationship -- living in quarantine added to the stress between them as Reese has been holed up with her two kids with ex Ryan Phillippe Ava and Deacon and her son Tennessee with Jim at the family’s ranch in Malibu
Page 9: Dementia patient Kenny Rogers cut his three adult children out of his $250 million will and now sources fear the late country legend could have been tricked into signing the document -- Kenny left everything to his 16-year-old twins sons with fifth wife Wanda and the will also stated it was his intent to specifically exclude his daughter Carole with his first wife and son Kenny Jr. with third wife and son Christopher with fourth wife and their issue as beneficiaries of his estate -- Kenny Sr. would never disown his own children according to the source especially since the singer’s son Kenny Jr. is incorrectly referred to Kenny Rogers III throughout the will -- the wording is not like Kenny Sr. and something is not right and his older kids are thinking about contesting the will
Page 10: Hot Shots -- Kate McKinnon shot a Saturday Night live skit in NYC, Sophia Bush hit the road in L.A. with her co-pilot pup Maggie, pregnant Jinger Duggar Vuolo in Venice with daughter Felicity, Heidi Klum walking the streets in her native Germany, Snoop Dogg saluted young rappers as he accepted BET’s I Am Hip Hop award
Page 11: Unwitting Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler once dabbled in the secret sex cult NXIVM -- the organization masqueraded as a self-help group but in 2017 it was exposed as a pyramid scheme for founder Keith Raniere who forced high-ranking female recruits to become his sex slaves -- in 2010 Jen and Gerry who were dating at the time wound up at one of the introductory seminars but they were turned off by the level of commitment expected and never returned -- they thought it was just a networking opportunity and had no idea what they were getting themselves into, cash-crunched Gwyneth Paltrow is facing hard times like everyone else and is looking to change her free-spending ways -- the belt-tightening caused by the coronavirus pandemic has even hit her lifestyle empire Goop causing her to shut down the London branch and make hard choices for the future -- Gwyneth may be worth $100 million but she and husband Brad Falchuk spend money like it’s going out of style on private jets they use on a whim and they own a fleet of fancy cars and pay steep salaries for staff who are at their beck and call 24/7 and it’s all draining their bank accounts -- they’re looking at making cuts across the board from personal trainers and chefs and drivers to the masseurs and beauticians who come to their house several times a week -- plus the couple believe it’s a bad look for them to be living so high on the hog when the rest of the world is suffering during the pandemic
Page 12: Straight Shuter -- Angelina Jolie spent years developing her own version of the Hollywood classic Cleopatra and now she’s livid that Gal Gadot has stolen the Egyptian queen -- Angie’s dream was to play Cleopatra the role that made Elizabeth Taylor an icon and it was to be the part that won Angie an Academy Award for Best Actress and now that’s over thanks to Gal who will be playing the Queen of the Nile instead, after ABC scrapped plans to honor Regis Philbin with a prime-time tribute Jimmy Kimmel insisted on honoring Regis on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, MSNBC talking head Rachel Maddow is fleeing New York for her Massachusetts farm after hanging a $2.3 million price tag on her NYC pad but Rachel didn’t want potential buyers looking through all the personal stuff at her apartment so all the personal pictures and books and clothing and everything else was shipped out and replaced with staged furniture, Ariel Winter and her dog (picture)
Page 13: Ailing Joni Mitchell opened up about how she’s still struggling to get back to her old self five years after a debilitating brain bleed -- after Joni was found unresponsive in her Bel-Air home in 2015 she said she was forced to relearn everyday tasks because the aneurysm took away her speech and her ability to walk and although she’s showing slow improvement she hasn’t been writing or playing the guitar or the piano, Randy Travis is defying all the odds as he plans the greatest comeback in country music history as he is making amazing progress after suffering a massive 2013 stroke that most believed would end his career forever and he was given just 1% chance of survival and even after he pulled through doctors believed he would be bedridden and unable to speak -- instead his grueling rehab efforts have miraculously put him on the road to realizing his dream of returning to the spotlight -- some of his motivation is financial; last year he sold his Nashville home and released his memoir which was fueled by his need to pay medical expenses after years of not being able to perform
Page 14: Hollywood Hookups -- Channing Tatum and Jessie J have split again, Cole Sprouse and Reina Silva dating, Kate Beckinsale and Goody Grace split
Page 15: Ariana Grande is raising eyebrows with her raunchy new record Positions -- the former squeaky-clean Nickelodeon star who has been dating real estate agent Dalton Gomez spouted off X-rated odes to an unnamed lover on the LP, six months after sidelining her marriage to former quarterback Jay Cutler Kristin Cavallari admitted there are good days and bad days but insisted it’s been nice to be able to focus on herself and figure out who she is now and what she ultimately wants out of life, hotel heiress Kathy Hilton is joining The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills as a friend of the main cast which includes her half-sister Kyle Richards

Lionel Hampton
Tumblr media
Lionel Leo Hampton (April 20, 1908 – August 31, 2002) was an American jazz vibraphonist, pianist, percussionist, and bandleader. Hampton worked with jazz musicians from Teddy Wilson, Benny Goodman, and Buddy Rich to Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, and Quincy Jones. In 1992, he was inducted into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1996.
Biography
Early life
Lionel Hampton was born in 1908 in Louisville, Kentucky, and was raised by his mother. Shortly after he was born, he and his mother moved to her hometown of Birmingham, Alabama. He spent his early childhood in Kenosha, Wisconsin, before he and his family moved to Chicago, Illinois, in 1916. As a youth, Hampton was a member of the Bud Billiken Club, an alternative to the Boy Scouts of America, which was off-limits because of racial segregation. During the 1920s, while still a teenager, Hampton took xylophone lessons from Jimmy Bertrand and began to play drums. Hampton was raised Roman Catholic, and started out playing fife and drum at the Holy Rosary Academy near Chicago.
Early career
Lionel Hampton began his career playing drums for the Chicago Defender Newsboys' Band (led by Major N. Clark Smith) while still a teenager in Chicago. He moved to California in 1927 or 1928, playing drums for the Dixieland Blues-Blowers. He made his recording debut with The Quality Serenaders led by Paul Howard, then left for Culver City and drummed for the Les Hite band at Sebastian's Cotton Club. One of his trademarks as a drummer was his ability to do stunts with multiple pairs of sticks such as twirling and juggling without missing a beat. During this period he began practicing on the vibraphone. In 1930 Louis Armstrong came to California and hired the Les Hite band, asking Hampton if he would play vibes on two songs. So began his career as a vibraphonist, popularizing the use of the instrument in the process. Invented ten years earlier, the vibraphone is essentially a xylophone with metal bars, a sustain pedal, and resonators equipped with electric-powered fans that add tremolo.
While working with the Les Hite band, Hampton also occasionally did some performing with Nat Shilkret and his orchestra. During the early 1930s, he studied music at the University of Southern California. In 1934 he led his own orchestra, and then appeared in the Bing Crosby film Pennies From Heaven (1936) alongside Louis Armstrong (wearing a mask in a scene while playing drums).
With Benny Goodman
Also in November 1936, the Benny Goodman Orchestra came to Los Angeles to play the Palomar Ballroom. When John Hammond brought Goodman to see Hampton perform, Goodman invited him to join his trio, which soon became the Benny Goodman Quartet with Teddy Wilson and Gene Krupa completing the lineup. The Trio and Quartet were among the first racially integrated jazz groups to perform before audiences, and were a leading small-group of the day.
Lionel Hampton Orchestra
While Hampton worked for Goodman in New York, he recorded with several different small groups known as the Lionel Hampton Orchestra, as well as assorted small groups within the Goodman band. In 1940 Hampton left the Goodman organization under amicable circumstances to form his own big band.
Hampton's orchestra developed a high-profile during the 1940s and early 1950s. His third recording with them in 1942 produced the version of "Flying Home", featuring a solo by Illinois Jacquet that anticipated rhythm & blues. Although Hampton first recorded "Flying Home" under his own name with a small group in 1940 for Victor, the best known version is the big band version recorded for Decca on May 26, 1942, in a new arrangement by Hampton's pianist Milt Buckner. The 78pm disc became successful enough for Hampton to record "Flyin' Home #2" in 1944, this time a feature for Arnett Cobb. The song went on to become the theme song for all three men. Guitarist Billy Mackel first joined Hampton in 1944, and would perform and record with him almost continuously through to the late 1970s. In 1947, Hamp performed "Stardust" at a "Just Jazz" concert for producer Gene Norman, also featuring Charlie Shavers and Slam Stewart; the recording was issued by Decca. Later, Norman's GNP Crescendo label issued the remaining tracks from the concert.
Hampton was a featured artist at numerous Cavalcade of Jazz concerts held at Wrigley Field in Los Angeles and produced by Leon Hefflin Sr. His first performance was at the second Cavalcade of Jazz concert held on October 12, 1946 and also featured Jack McVea, Slim Gaillard, T-Bone Walker, the Honeydrippers and Louis Armstrong. The fifth Cavalcade of Jazz concert was held in two locations, Wrigley Field in Los Angeles and Lane Field in San Diego, July 10, 1949 and September 3, 1949 respectively. Betty Carter, Jimmy Witherspoon, Buddy Banks, Smiley Turner and Big Jay McNeely also played with Hampton. It was at the sixth Cavalcade of Jazz, June 25, 1950 that precipitated the closest thing to a riot in the show’s eventful history. Lionel and his band paraded around the ball park’s infield playing ‘Flying High’.  The huge crowd, around 14,000 went berserk, tossed cushions, coats, hats, programs, and just about anything else they could lay hands on and swarmed on the field. Dinah Washington, Roy Milton, PeeWee Crayton, Lillie Greenwood, Tiny Davis an Her Hell Divers were also featured. His final Cavalcade of Jazz concert held on July 24, 1955 (Eleventh) also featured Big Jay McNeely, The Medallions, The Penguins and James Moody and his Orchestra.
From the mid-1940s until the early 1950s, Hampton led a lively rhythm & blues band whose Decca Records recordings included numerous young performers who later had significant careers. They included bassist Charles Mingus, saxophonist Johnny Griffin, guitarist Wes Montgomery, and vocalist Dinah Washington. Other noteworthy band members were trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie, Cat Anderson, Kenny Dorham, and Snooky Young; trombonist Jimmy Cleveland, and saxophonists Jerome Richardson and Curtis Lowe.
The Hampton orchestra that toured Europe in 1953 included Clifford Brown, Gigi Gryce, Anthony Ortega, Monk Montgomery, George Wallington, Art Farmer, Quincy Jones, and singer Annie Ross. Hampton continued to record with small groups and jam sessions during the 1940s and 1950s, with Oscar Peterson, Buddy DeFranco, and others. In 1955, while in California working on The Benny Goodman Story he recorded with Stan Getz and made two albums with Art Tatum for Norman Granz as well as with his own big band.
Hampton performed with Louis Armstrong and Italian singer Lara Saint Paul at the 1968 Sanremo Music Festival in Italy. The performance created a sensation with Italian audiences, as it broke into a real jazz session. That same year, Hampton received a Papal Medal from Pope Paul VI.
Later career
During the 1960s, Hampton's groups were in decline; he was still performing what had succeeded for him earlier in his career. He did not fare much better in the 1970s, though he recorded actively for his Who's Who in Jazz record label, which he founded in 1977/1978.
Beginning in February 1984, Hampton and his band played at the University of Idaho's annual jazz festival, which was renamed the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival the following year. In 1987 the UI's school of music was renamed for Hampton, the first university music school named for a jazz musician.
Hampton remained active until a stroke in Paris in 1991 led to a collapse on stage. That incident, combined with years of chronic arthritis, forced him to cut back drastically on performances. However, he did play at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in 2001 shortly before his death.
Hampton died from congestive heart failure at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York City, on August 31, 2002. He was interred at the Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, New York. His funeral was held on September 7, 2002, and featured a performance by Wynton Marsalis and David Ostwald's Gully Low Jazz Band at Riverside Church in Manhattan; the procession began at The Cotton Club in Harlem.
Personal life
On November 11, 1936, in Yuma, Arizona, Lionel Hampton married Gladys Riddle (1913–1971). Gladys was Lionel's business manager throughout much of his career. Many musicians recall that Lionel ran the music and Gladys ran the business.
During the 1950s he had a strong interest in Judaism and raised money for Israel. In 1953 he composed a King David suite and performed it in Israel with the Boston Pops Orchestra. Later in life Hampton became a Christian Scientist. Hampton was also a Thirty-third degree Prince Hall freemason. In January 1997, his apartment caught fire and destroyed his awards and belongings; Hampton escaped uninjured.
On June 25, 2019, The New York Times Magazine listed Lionel Hampton among hundreds of artists whose material was reportedly destroyed in the 2008 Universal fire.
Charity
Hampton was deeply involved in the construction of various public housing projects, and founded the Lionel Hampton Development Corporation. Construction began with the Lionel Hampton Houses in Harlem, New York in the 1960s, with the help of then Republican governor Nelson Rockefeller. Hampton's wife, Gladys Hampton, also was involved in construction of a housing project in her name, the Gladys Hampton Houses. Gladys died in 1971. In the 1980s, Hampton built another housing project called Hampton Hills in Newark, New Jersey.
Hampton was a staunch Republican and served as a delegate to several Republican National Conventions. He served as Vice-Chairman of the New York Republican County Committee for some years and also was a member of the New York City Human Rights Commission. Hampton donated almost $300,000 to Republican campaigns and committees throughout his lifetime.

Al House Never Gives Up Hope: The Incorrigible Life of A Florida Super-Bandit
By: Halley Reed, additional research by Samantha Bulgerin
On March 29th, 1924, the weekly payroll of the Hav-A-Tampa cigar factory arrived via armored truck, as usual. The money was placed on office manager T.W. McElvery’s desk to be counted. Just a few minutes afterwards, three men approached bookkeeper Ramon Martinez and spoke to him. Not speaking English very well, Martinez assumed they were tourists looking for a tour of the factory. Martinez lead them to the business office. When he opened the door, two of the men rushed past him and pulled out revolvers. The third clubbed Martinez over the head and guarded the door. One of the bandits kept a gun on the captives and told them to face a wall with their hands up. The other bandit filled a sack with the payroll money. Quickly and quietly, the three bandits made their way out of the building and into a car where two more men waited for them. They made off with over $24,000 dollars.
In 1924, Tampa was quite used to crime. In the 1910s, its reputation had earned it the nickname of “the wickedest city in the south,” but by the 20s, it had been upgraded to “the damnedest city this side of hell.” The population of Tampa was exploding due to a massive state-wide real estate boom, aided by the steady wealth of the cigar, railroad, and shipping industries.  The so-called “underworld” of Tampa had long been ruled by Charlie Wall,
the heir of two of Tampa’s wealthiest and most influential families who spurned respectable society and took up a life of gambling and crime. Using his wealth, criminal network, and family connections, he rigged elections and got his cousins and supporters elected to just about every important political office in Tampa. The police answered to him, and he used the police to put all his rivals out of business. While Wall’s initial wealth came from gambling, specifically, a lottery-like game called bolita, prohibition brought in a new opportunity for criminals to make money. With its large port and direct shipping connections to Cuba, Mexico, and the Caribbean, Tampa was one of the nation’s largest bootlegging hubs. Property crime surged to an all-time high. No bank or safe was safe. Even the criminals weren’t safe, as two of Tampa’s most notorious Sicilian mobsters, Santo Trafficante, Sr., and Ignazio Antinori, both reported their cars stolen.
The Hav-a-Tampa robbery, pulled off so quickly and smoothly, was sensational, even for Tampa. It made headlines in newspapers across the country. Tampa Chief of Detectives Pearson told the Tampa Tribune, “At any rate, the job was done by the cleverest bunch of bandits operating in this territory. They made a clean job of it, and left none of the tell-tale marks usually found after an amateur robbery. They were professionals, well-informed concerning the location of the office, the money, and the chances for interruption… It must have taken weeks and possibly months to have mapped out their program, for it worked with clock-like precision.”
The police were left with hardly any information about who the bandits might be, only sketchy eye-witness descriptions. Still, detectives searched through criminal records in hopes of finding someone who fit the description, and seven days later, a private detective named Fred Thomas identified one of the men as Albert Ross House, who was wanted in Indiana in connection to the robbery of the paymaster of the Carpenter Construction Company.
The second bandit was initially identified as Michael Murphy, another Indiana criminal and an associate of House’s, but who was serving jail time in Chicago during the time of the robbery. Two men who lived at House’s last known address identified the second bandit as “Big Paul” Huhn, also from Indiana, and the third bandit as “Jew Al” Weeden, a criminal with so many aliases that his real name is impossible to ascertain.
“Big Paul” was arrested at Terre Haute, Indiana, on April 13th. Standing at 6 ft., one inch, and weighing 220 pounds, he was well-known to Indiana police and an easy find. Exactly one month later, he was given the maximum sentence allowed by law: twenty years at Raiford State Penitentiary. With Huhn in jail, the search continued, but went quiet. In August, a grand jury investigating the robbery recommended a new trial be held for Huhn. The request was granted, and in March, Huhn was released from prison on bond.
The police, however, weren’t convinced that Huhn was innocent. When he was released, they followed him to a home on Central Avenue. The next day, on March 17th, police raided the home and arrested not only Huhn, but Al House and two of their fellow gang members Lester Gildra and John Kennis, as well as a woman claiming to be House’s wife. Along with the bandits, police found an enormous cache of weapons, burglary tools, and safe-cracking equipment. Charlie Wall’s phone number was written by the telephone. The woman turned out to be Teresa “Dixie” Cohn, the wife of notorious wire-tapper Mack “The Count” Span.
House confessed that he was in Tampa at the time of the robbery and staying with “Jew Al.”  He claimed to have been “double crossed” by one of the “higher ups” in Tampa. He claimed that Weeden had fallen for the higher up’s woman, and that they had left together on the night of the robbery, and that in jealousy, the higher up made Huhn the “goat” of the robbery. Later, it would be reported that in the weeks before the robbery Huhn had been seen with Mollie McCann, and ex-girlfriend of Charlie Wall’s, with whom he was accused of participating in the robbery of a grocery warehouse in Birmingham, Alabama. As far as any further details, House refused to say. “I’ve never ‘squawked’ on another man yet,” he told the Tampa Tribune, “And I don’t expect to this time if there is any other way out of it.” During all this, House never spoke with an attorney, claiming, “I don’t need one.”
On the morning of March 23rd, the guards of the Hillsborough County Jail awoke to find that House had escaped. Using ten-inch hacksaws, he sawed through the iron bars of his cell window, climbed down the wall below, and then used a ladder to climb the outer wall.
Several weeks later, a letter was received by the Tampa Tribune bearing House’s signature and fingerprints. In it, he asserted the innocence of Teresa and Big Paul. He went on to explain that he’d been brought to Tampa by “Two men, one a gambler and fixer, the other, a man who opened an office in Tampa about a year ago on Franklin St. I will not give their names because I would give up my life before I would snitch on anyone.” House confessed to having “pulled” the Hav-a-Tampa job, and that $4,000 of the $24,000 had been given to the fixer. He insisted that Big Paul had been framed, and said that they’d known each other in Terre Haute for the past five years.
At one point in the letter, House writes, “I wish to say that I am not the worst criminal at heart, as I turned down jobs for which I would have received good money during my winters in Florida.” He says he was offered $8,000 in total to “bump off” local bandit “Australian Jim” Lucas, State’s Attorney R.E.L. Chancey, and former police constable turned bootlegger Norris McFall.
Lucas, allegedly, “Had pulled off too many jobs for him, knew too much, and was talking.” Unbeknownst to House, Lucas had actually been missing for several months, and was believed to have been “planted” at the bottom of Tampa Bay.
R.E.L. Chancey was to be eliminated “on account of some wire-tapping trouble in the past and to keep him from molesting his business in the next four years.” Chancey was the first politician in Tampa to openly challenge Charlie Wall and his political machine since Wall had come to power. In 1931, he would run for mayor, unseating Wall’s cousin, D.B. McKay, who had reigned as mayor with only four years of interruption (during which one of Charlie’s other cousins served as mayor) since 1910. Chancey would use his power as mayor to significantly diminish Wall’s influence and wealth, and, along with the ascendence of the Sicilian-American mafia, would be one of the major forces that pushed Wall into retirement in 1938.
Norris McFall, who had recently left the Tampa police force and opened his own high-end speakeasy and gambling joint, “Was getting too damned smart and that they were always crossed in politics, and Mr. McFall knew the game too well and was getting too strong. He also mentioned that Mr. McFall had run a bunch of his confidence men out of town about four years ago and that he hated his insides.” In 1928, McFall would be shot in his own back yard as he put his car in his garage for the night. He died nine days later, after informing the police that as the gunman ran away, he yelled, “That’s what you get for fooling up with Charlie Wall!”
House ended his letter by complaining that he wished he had never come to Tampa and that it had left him “broke but free, so that I can thank God for small favors.” He signed his letter, “Respectfully yours, Al House, Yegg and Bandit.”

The Elite Disgruntled's Real World Heavyweight Championship Title History.
How have I been since I finished my intense post (two/three days have passed in that time)? It is almost like I need to put out spoilers. Am I NXT, ROH, NJPW on Axs? Or am I Impact?
Acknowledging my trauma from sexual assault in regards to the wrestling business was therapeutic. I will have probably given the post at least one more proofread, more time to work through it, relive it, regret it. At least the expectations are known...except for  a significant loss of @maineventzombie Twitter followers (80 to 75, guess I am as insincere as those saying my anti-Southern Pride blog claim). As long as Kavanaugh has not made any decisions between now and then, my outlook should not be any more dire.
With that thought, placing our cats in suspended animation when we are not at home to extend their lives should be a technology to explore and to patent. We can use my girlfriend's cat, a cooler and some dry ice to start. Then there will be no more need to inquire my readers about helping me out in finding a way to promote my B-movie pro-wrestling zomcom, Main Event of the Dead, I would be happy to send you a treatment if you e-mail me at [email protected].
Placing a plug there reminds me that Redbox may need my film. "Black Water" with Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren amused me, but was 15 minutes too long to warrant any more coverage a submarine B-movie that was filmed on one sound stage deserves. Sound stage may be too generous. It may have been whatever floor in an office building the production company claims to be their's.
With "Main Event of the Dead," there are no illusions that there will not be a variety of sets. Trying to convince us that the same control room desk is on opposite sides of the sub will not be an issue. But, with the next rewrite, maybe we could set it in a submarine instead of Don's in Donahue or The Eagles Club in Berwyn.
"Black Water" shows me that finding the perfect length for a project is important, so since this is the end of my "Disgruntled's Real World Champion" blog, I worked on a summary of the past four entries' lists to fill up any empty space. Hopefully, my last ditch effort for discussion, will not be like that film.
2014 to Now:
77th World Heavyweight Champion - WWE's Randy Orton (1) - 12/15/13 to 4/6/2014
Since this is Orton's second to last reign as WWE/World Champion, I almost got away with keeping him out of the Real World Champion narrative. Adam Cole had won a tournament to claim the vacant ROH title, but that was just the start of him breaking out on a national level. This is the closest we have been to one champion since Chris Jericho, so I cannot deny who The Ringer's Dave Shoemaker calls, "The measuring stick for a WWE superstar," his place in history.
78th World Heavyweight Champion - WWE's Daniel Bryan (3) - 4/6/14 to 6/9/14
If I think back to 2015, I am sure Bryan had said he was the unbeaten champion upon his return, but if you are that, you need to pull the Shawn Michaels's Intercontinental Championship gimmick and bring your belts with you. Ironically, he would be relegated via ladder match to the IC title upon his brief return.
79th World Heavyweight Champion - ROH's Adam Cole - 6/9/14 to 6/22/14
The WWE spent 20 days vacant, and there was only one champion available. I know Total Nonstop Action has been excluded, but can you sell me on Eric Young over Adam Cole Bay Bay?
80th World Heavyweight Champion - ROH's Michael Elgin - 6/22/14 to 9/6/14
Bobby Lashley might be the better person, but Big Mike is the better all around worker.
For TNA/Impact Marks:
Sorry Dixie. Let it be known, when I originally started working on the list, I was doing my best to take the TNA World Championship into consideration. But, when it was WWE light, their former WWE talent that captured their highest title was reminiscent of Verne Gagne and Vince McMahon Sr. trying to prove the NWA wrong. This also left the WWE presence constantly overshadowing their "home grown" talent. I think AJ Styles was not a fully formed wrestler until he walked away from the company.
Having been involved with the business, the more places to make money the better should be my mindset. But TNA/Impact feels like a drag on the business since they never seem to do anything right. It just drives me nuts to hear people say, "they're really getting better," and then how they shot themselves in the foot. If I wanted trying to get better, I will drive to towns 30 minutes outside of a metropolitan area to catch a no budget, $20 talent indie instead of adding $15 a month on my cable bill. To see that stuff with a large budget bothers me, so Impact bothers me.
81st World Heavyweight Champion - WWE's Brock Lesnar (4) - 9/6/14 to 3/29/2015
You cannot put a chicken farmer, a Briscoe, up against a former Ultimate Fighting Championship Heavyweight Champion.
82nd World Heavyweight Champion - WWE's Seth Rollins (2) - 3/29/15 to 11/4/15
If you are going to cash in Money in the Bank, do it at the one place where no one can deny your cunning.
83rd World Heavyweight Champion - ROH's Jay Lethal - 11/4/15 to 8/19/2016
Jay Lethal was defending two titles at this time and managed to hold ROH's most prestigious title over a year. Roman Reigns's first three title reigns all occurred during this time frame.
84th World Heavyweight Champion - New Japan's Kazuchika Okada - 8/19/16 - 6/9/2018
The title reign was nearly two years. During this reign, the champion defended against the ROH Champion Cody on national TV in the United States. The Universal Title has had only one interesting title reign (Kevin Owens), and it could be said that Okada may have ran AJ Styles back to the United States. Kenny Omega may have helped with that as well.
Current World Heavyweight Champion - New Japan's Kenny Omega.
The list is meant for discussion, so please bring it on. Here is the list of champions (1983 to July 94 [tumblr limits]) along side their pretenders. Enjoy.

3 college basketball recruiting insiders convicted in NYC
NEW YORK — An Adidas executive and two other insiders from the high-stakes world of college basketball recruiting were convicted Wednesday in a corruption case that prosecutors said exposed the underbelly of the sport.
A federal jury in Manhattan found former Adidas executive James Gatto, business manager Christian Dawkins and amateur league director Merl Code guilty of fraud charges.
The trial centered on whether the men’s admitted efforts to channel secret payments to the families of top recruits luring them to major basketball programs sponsored by Adidas was criminal. At stake was a fortune in revenue for the basketball programs and potential endorsement deals for the players if they went pro.
Evidence included text messages between the defendants and coaches from top-tier coaches like Bob Self of Kansas and Rick Pitino of Louisville and testimony from the father of prized recruit Brian Bowen Jr. describing how a Louisville assistant handed him an envelope stuffed with cash.
Prosecutors claimed the schools were in the dark about the payment schemes, including $100,000 promised to Bowen’s family, that are outlawed by the NCAA. They accused the defendants of defrauding universities by tricking them into passing out scholarships to players who should have been ineligible.
In closing arguments, prosecutor Noah Solowiejczyk recounted testimony from cooperators and wiretap evidence about how the defendants took steps to create false invoices to Adidas, route funds through various bank accounts and convert it to cash for the families.
The behavior “tells you an awful lot about the defendants,” the prosecutor said. “It tells you that what they were doing was wrong.”
The defendants didn’t deny they sought to make the payments. But they argued that was how the recruitment game was played by Adidas, Nike and other sportswear companies – and that talent-hungry coaching staffs knew it.
A lawyer for defendant Dawkins, who was instrumental in steering Bowen to Louisville, claimed his client thought he was helping the program succeed to the benefit of everyone involved.
“What proof did the government present that Louisville suffered any harm?” attorney Steven Haney said in closing arguments. In Dawkins’ mind, “he thought what he was doing was OK.”
Defense attorneys sought to convince the jury the text messages and phone records showing Self and Patinto were in touch with the recruitment middlemen aligned with Adidas proved they had to be aware of the payments. They said further proof the schools weren’t blind to the schemes was testimony by Brian Bowen Sr. claiming he received $1,300 from Louisville assistant Kenny Johnson and other testimony by a cooperator, former Adidas consultant, Thomas “T.J.” Gassnola, that he delivered $40,000 to North Carolina State assistant coach Orlando Early intended for the family of highly-touted point guard Dennis Smith Jr.
In the texts last year, Gassnola told Self he was in the touch with the guardian of player Silvio De Sousa, who prosecutors say was among recruits whose families were offered secret payments.
Self responded: “We good,” according to an exhibit of the communication.
Gassnola said: “Always. That was light work.”
Another exhibit showed how Dawkins texted Pitino as Bowen was nearing a decision about where he would play, asking, “Would you have any interest in Brian Bowen or are you done with recruiting?”
Pitino responded: “We would love to have him.”
The exhibit showed Gatto also reached out to Pitino by text asking if they could speak on the phone, and records show there was a conversation afterward.
But there were no communications in which the coaches mentioned money. The coaches and the schools have either denied any wrongdoing or not commented on the case.
Self remains at Kansas, where De Sousa is still on the team. Kansas announced this week De Sousa is being held off the court until information that came out of the trial was reviewed. But at Louisville, the scandal resulted in the firing of Pitino and forced Bowen to leave the university and pursue a professional career.
The trial’s most emotional moment came when a prosecutor first began questioning the elder Bowen about his son, who goes by the nickname “Tugs.”
“Is Tugs in college?” asked prosecutor Edward Diskant.
“No, he’s not,” Bowen responded.
When the prosecutor asked why not, Bowen dropped his head into his hands and wept.

2017 NFL celebration rankings: Eagles bowl their way to the top in Week 12
We’ve got a new champion in this week’s rankings.
The NFL relaxed its rules on celebrations this offseason. Here at SB Nation, our editorial stance is that this makes the game funner for players and fans alike, and we endorse it wholeheartedly.
For the longest time, we enjoyed seeing Antonio Brown twerking in the end zone and Odell Beckham Jr. doing his best Michael Jackson impression, only to have that delight interrupted by a flag and the knowledge that a fine would likely follow. We shouldn’t see any pelvic thrusting this year despite the relaxed rules. It’s still a penalty. But players can dance, use the ball as a prop, and choreograph celebrations with teammates til their hearts’ content.
We’ll be celebrating the celebrations this season by keeping a running list of rankings. At the end of the year we’ll crown a winner.
Here are the latest NFL celebration rankings:
Group category
1. Eagles go bowling
This is brilliant and the timing is perfect.
2. “Electric Slide”
The Eagles hold the top two spots in Week 12 thanks to a nod to everyone’s favorite line dance.
3. Soul Train
The Falcons got a big road win on Monday Night Football against the Seahawks in Week 11. They also jumped to the top of our rankings with the best celebration of the season. Mohamed Sanu Sr. got all of his teammates involved as he went down the Soul Train line.
Going down the Soul Train on #VictoryTuesday like: http://pic.twitter.com/IjlS6NRFNA
— Atlanta Falcons (@AtlantaFalcons) November 21, 2017
4. Leapfrog
Heck yes. This was the most fun celebration of the year until the Falcons took over in Week 11, and that’s saying something, because there have been a ton of good ones. Bonus points for involving so many players, especially the unsung heroes, offensive linemen.
5. Potato sack race
After a Travis Kelce touchdown, Tyreek Hill and Demarcus Robinson faced off against him in a potato sack race. Demetrius Harris officiates, and both Robinson and Hill fall down. We don’t want to speculate, but they might have let Kelce win.
6. Duck, duck, goose!
It wasn’t easy to unseat the Colts and their bank heist, but the Vikings pulled it off with a duck, duck, goose celebration in the end zone.
7. Steelers play hide and seek
JuJu Smith-Schuster is a rookie, but he’s already proven he’s one of the most fun players in the league. Case in point: this hide and seek celebration with Le’Veon Bell.
8. Steelers re-enact A.J. Green and Jalen Ramsey fight
This one lands pretty high on the list for creativity alone. It’s a pretty good simulation of the fight. But it’s also unusual, which makes it stand out.
9. Eagles score a touchdown, then hit a home run
Torrey Smith scores to put the Eagles up 20-0, and then he knocks one out of the park. It doesn’t get much better than this.
10. Eagles charge the mound
The Eagles must really love these baseball-themed celebrations. This one was great because it happened during the week of the World Series. Zach Ertz hits Alshon Jeffery with a pitch, and Jeffery charges the mound.
11. Lion King
Awww, look at little football Simba. You can’t go wrong with a nod to the Lion King.
12. Colts pull off a bank heist
It took weeks for someone to knock Taco Charlton out of the top spot. The Colts finally did it with a creative take on a bank robbery.
13. Titans become Temptations impersonators for a minute
I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day. When it’s cold outside, I’ve got the month of May. I guess you’d say, what can make me feel this way? My girl, my girl, my girl ...
Thanks to the Titans we’ve got that one stuck in our heads.
14. Taco Charlton makin’ tacos for his teammates
This was a preseason celebration, but it’s so perfect that we have to count it. As a matter of fact, we’re all convinced this one may be hard to top, period.
If anybody but a guy named Taco tried to pull this off, it would be weird. But for Charlton, it totally works.
15. Le’Veon Bell benches in the end zone
This gives a whole new meaning to the phrase “flex on ‘em.”
16. Rob Kelley teaches Morgan Moses how to spike
Now this is teamwork.
17. Eagles coordinate a group spike
It’s simple, yet well-timed and effective.
18. The Lions pretend they’re a curling team
The Lions have this group celebration thing down, and they’re dominating this category. After a touchdown in Week 3 against the Falcons, Golden Tate and his teammates went all Winter Olympics on us in the end zone.
19. The Bills take a video game break
After a Jordan Matthews score, he and Zay Jones faced off in a pretend video game. Wonder who won?
20. Taylor Gabriel and Julio Jones on a relay team?
Excuse me, USA Track and Field, but this is actually not a bad idea. These two can both fly.
✈️ #Line it up @juliojones_11 #Brotherhood http://pic.twitter.com/kBX7ijwtP9
— Taylor Gabriel (@TGdadon1) September 26, 2017
21. Julio Jones is pretty good at fencing, too
Jones went off for 253 yards and two touchdowns against the Buccaneers in Week 12. He also gave us this nifty fencing celebration.
Introducing fencing , JULIOOOOOO. http://pic.twitter.com/OA4BGKE3Z3
— Atlanta Falcons (@AtlantaFalcons) November 26, 2017
22. Marvin Jones and his teammates Double Dutch
This celebration is the perfect example of why the NFL needed to chill out about group celebrations. When Marvin Jones and his teammates go full-on elementary school kids jumping rope on a playground, it’s the embodiment of fun.
The catch was great... the celebration was even better! #NYJvsDET det-lions http://pic.twitter.com/hT2yYHbhor
— Detroit Lions (@Lions) August 20, 2017
23. Martavis Bryant shooting dice
Martavis Bryant scored his first touchdown since 2015 in Week 2 against the Vikings, and he celebrated by throwing some imaginary dice. His teammate Antonio Brown promptly snatched them up.
24. Titans are not worthy of Wesley Woodyard
Are any of these players really old enough to remember Wayne’s World? It doesn’t matter. This is a good one.
25. Deshaun Watson dances with Toro, the Texans’ mascot
Everybody’s having a good time! They should have been. The Texans won 57-14.
26. Packers serving up some chow
Davante Adams dished up some dinner for his teammates, and Randall Cobb was first in line. Maybe it was a Cobb salad.
27. Dalvin is Cookin’
Vikings rookie Dalvin Cook celebrated a trip to the end zone with a play off of his last name. It was unfortunately his last celebration of the season since he tore his ACL and landed on IR later in the game.
28. Titans players take some photos in the end zone
Rishard Matthews scored in Week 3 against the Seahawks, and he pulled in teammates Eric Weems and Jonnu Smith for a little photoshoot.
29. Don’t leave Graham Glasgow hanging, guys!
.@ShowtimeTate: "We're going to try to involve him next time. Poor Graham. He just wants to be included." http://pic.twitter.com/FZ2VomzH44
— Detroit Lions (@Lions) September 20, 2017
Golden Tate and Marvin Jones celebrated a touchdown with a friendly little fake game of ping pong. But offensive lineman Graham Glasgow just wanted to join in, and the guys gave him the cold shoulder. Our only quarrel with their top-ranked curling celebration is that Glasgow wasn’t around. Include your teammate next time, because otherwise this was a fun one.
30. We legitimately don’t know what the Bengals are even doing here
Kudos for taking advantage of the celebration rules, but tighten up, fellas.
Solo category
1. Juju Schuster-Smith with the Dragon Ball Z nod
Kamehameha!
2. Juju Smith-Schuster locks up his bike
He’s only a rookie, and he’s the youngest player in the NFL. But he sure knows how to celebrate. Smith-Schuster’s bike was stolen. He celebrated a touchdown in the next game by locking up the exercise bike on the sideline. Better safe than sorry.
3. Stefon Diggs pays homage to Randy Moss
This couldn’t have come at a better time, as Diggs honored the Vikings legend on a night when Moss was in the house to be inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor. Diggs hit Moss’ classic Splitting the Defense celebration, then went right into a Milly Rock.
4. Odell Beckham Jr. performs CPR on the ball
Sadly, this is the last Beckham celebration we’ll see this year. He’s been placed on IR after having season-ending surgery to repair a broken ankle he suffered in Week 5 against the Chargers. But this was a good one.
5. Tyreek Hill makes a phone call
We don’t know who he’s calling. Saul? Ghostbusters? Carly Rae Jepsen? It doesn’t matter. It’s a fun celebration.
6. Myles Garrett celebrates his first sack with a nod to J.R. Smith
What a way to make his entrance into the NFL.
7. Joe Mixon’s Milly Rock
It’s flawless execution from the rookie.
8. Kareem Hunt takes a nap in the end zone
Playing football is hard work, and everybody needs a nap now and then. Kareem Hunt caught up on some hard-earned rest after scoring a touchdown against the Eagles by catching some Z’s in the end zone.
9. Kenny Stills does his best LaDainian Tomlinson impression
After scoring a touchdown against the Chargers, Stills’ celebration was an homage to Chargers great LaDainian Tomlinson. Tomlinson was even in the house to see it happen.
10. Adam Thielen can’t contain his excitement
This looks less like a planned celebration and more like Thielen just being super-excited. But we like it.
11. Dion Lewis gets up close and personal
The Patriots running back looked like he wanted to share this celebration with everyone sitting at home and watching his team beat the Broncos.
12. Browns tight end David Njoku spikes the ball into his own butt
This was probably an unintended consequence, but it was hilarious.
13. GRONK SPIKE from Jadeveon Clowney
Clowney celebrated his pick-six against Tom Brady and the Patriots in the best possible way.
14. Travis Kelce’s got moves
Technically this could be a group celebration, but Kelce steals the show, so he’s getting the solo nod here.
15. Charcandrick West’s sassy dance
There’s something to be said for a good old-fashioned touchdown celebration dance. That’s what West gave us in the Chiefs’ win over the Texans in Week 5.
16. Tie - Mack Hollins and Mark Ingram are both Backpack Kid
Much like Backpack Kid stole Katy Perry’s spotlight on Saturday Night Live, these guys tried to show each other up with their own versions of Backpack Kid’s dance.
17. Stefon Diggs punts a ball to Mars
We need to ask Marquette King to analyze Diggs’ form, but he gets some pretty good air under this one.
18. Cam Newton brought back the dab
Newton said the dab was dead, then proved the dab can never die.
Cam Newton brought back the dab http://pic.twitter.com/xJKFeM76XH
— SB Nation (@SBNation) September 17, 2017
19. Cam’s really got to expand his repertoire
All of this buildup for his same old Superman celebration. Sigh.
20. Yeah, we don’t even know
What’s this celebration? We have no idea.
Basketball-related category
1. Demetrius Harris shoots a free throw while Tyreek Hill plays the part of the hoop
The Chiefs made another strong case in favor of group celebrations in their season-opening win over the Patriots. Harris got into the end zone, and his teammates joined him for a little basketball-themed celebration.
2. Devonta Freeman shoots a free throw
These basketball-themed celebrations are pretty popular. Freeman scored two touchdowns in Atlanta’s Week 2 win over the Packers, and he celebrated his first score by shooting a free throw through his teammate Andy Levitre’s arms. NBC celebrated, too, by playing the old NBA on NBC theme song.
3. Vintage Vernon Davis
Davis has to be so happy he won’t get fined for this one anymore.

I admit that I unexpectedly came across this brilliant music list when I was looking up the She’s Like the Wind song by Patrick Swayze feat. Wendy Fraser after unexpectedly hearing it on an 80s station on Pandora. I am glad that the She’s Like the Wind song by Patrick Swayze feat. ‘Calling them like I see them…’
 By KEN WELBORN
Record Publisher
Like most of us, my dad answered to many names when talking to different people. He was Pa, Dad, Carley, The Preacher, C. S., Grandpa, Seldon, Carley Sr., Rev. C. S., Preacher Welborn, Paw-Paw, and, as my mother, Cary, always called him, Daddy.
No matter what you called him, he was an honest man with everyone, a bit too honest sometimes, it seemed, but he would always defend calling it the way he saw it. Period. End of discussion.
While he didn't answer to it, we often referred to him as The Great Stone Face—not a very demonstrative man; to me, an old man to me as long as I knew him, and, while I loved him dearly, I didn't like him too much.
Mercifully for both of us that changed in the 80's when I began Thursday Magazine, predecessor to The Record, and my dad began making trips with me each week as we traveled back and forth to the printer in Hickory. So finally, in my mid 30s, I got to know my dad, to understand much more about him, and to like him. I have many stories to tell, but today I want to share one about honesty.
It was an election year, and Dad was at the office waiting for me to get ready to go. I had several loose ends to tie up and was running around like a chicken with its head cut off. At last I had only one more person to deal with, and he showed up right on time.
As I said, it was an election year and a man I had known all my life, Bill Thomas, was running for county commissioner. We had done some printing for Bill and he was there to puck it up, and, in the process of it all saw my dad sitting there. Come to find out they had been friends for many years and Bill greeted my father with “Good to see you again, Preacher, and I hope you'll remember me on election day.” My dad replied, “Good to see you too, Bill, and I'll remember you on election day, but I can't vote for you.”
My face turned red, and I kind of stammered our way out the door.
Once in the truck, I asked my dad why he was so pointedly honest with Bill. That perhaps he could have softened it a bit, or just said nothing and nodded to him. I was assured that he didn't want to mislead Bill, that he had already promised other candidates his vote, and had no choice. I said that maybe, just maybe, that sometimes he could be honest to a fault.
Well, he took great exception to that comment and said Bill Thomas had been his friend for years and he wasn't going to mislead him for me or anyone else. He then went on to say that there was no “fault” in honesty and gave me his take on the subject.
“Son,” he began, “tell the truth. Always. You have to tell the truth, even if it takes the hide off someone. You see, the hide will grow back, but lies are like cancer—before long you're eaten up with it, and there's nothing left.” There wasn't much to say after that, and I never again let my father's honesty embarrass me.
Years later, as I got to spend some time with Bill Thomas through his faithful service with VFW Post 1142's Honor Guard, I asked if he remembered that incident at the old Thursday Magazine offices. He and assured me he did. When I told him of my conversations with my dad about that day, he smiled broadly and said, “Kenny, I had far more respect for your dad's honesty than all the folks who swore they were going to vote for me, knowing they had no intention of ever doing so.”
My dad and I made those trips as long as he was physically able. The memories of those days, and the things I learned from him and about him, are truly precious to me.
I came to be proud that my dad was honest with Bill Thomas that day.
 And with me.
   Random acts of kindness
By LAURA WELBORN
“You have power over your mind, not outside events.
Realize this, and you will find strength.”
―Marcus Aurelius
What you might think of as your destiny is really just your circumstances, and these circumstances can be changed.
Understanding that you are fully responsible and in control of your circumstances through your actions and attitude is crucial.  This realization means you are free to make changes as you see fit. When we feel discouraged and defeated, typically our first instinct is to look outside of ourselves for someone or something to blame.  In reality, we ought to be looking at how we’re feeling, what we’re thinking, and how we plan to respond.
Yet feeling discouraged and defeated is a sign that it’s time to make a change (make that change). It could be a change of heart, a change in your perspective, or a change in your habits.  But the point in any case is that the way you are doing things is no longer working. One of the hardest things is to look outside ourselves to what is not working for us.  It is when we are brave enough to question our actions and look into their effects on our life that we have a chance… a chance to turn things around in a positive way.
It never feels good to look at what we are doing wrong- or is not working for us.
Your life is your responsibility. While you can’t always change what’s outside of you, you can certainly change your perception of it.  When you change the way you look at things, the things themselves change, and gives room for positive action.(Marc and Angel Hack Life)
Part of changing our life, I believe, comes when we go outside of ourselves to take that step towards positive action.  When we are making changes in our lives I think it becomes important to remember to do things that keep us focused in a positive way.
One of these is to perform acts of kindness.  When we practice kindness it releases serotonin in our brain.  (Serotonin is a substance that has big time health benefits, including making us feel more blissful.)  Selflessly helping someone is a super powerful way to feel good inside. What’s great about this kindness act is that not only will you feel better, but so will people watching the act of kindness.
Bystanders will be blessed with a release of serotonin just by watching what’s going on.  The job of most anti-depressants is to release more serotonin which helps us ultimately feel better… which now can be done through going outside of ourselves and doing a good deed.  It is all a part of changing our path and moving beyond our world that seems full of violence to put out one small act to change our direction and the direction of others.
Repairing Israel-U.S. alliance helps Israel and Netanyahu
By EARL COX
Special to The Record
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent visit with U.S. President Donald Trump has bolstered Israel’s security and global standing. It also shored up Netanyahu’s political leverage.
After Bibi’s contentious relationships with Obama and Clinton, he needed results from this trip that would boost his influence at home—and the restoration of a strong Israel-U.S. alliance fits the bill. Though he didn’t get reassurances from Trump on every point he wanted, the visit was a success. For the first time in 11 years, a Republican president and friendlier, GOP-majority Congress welcomed the prime minister of Israel.
Yet the trip took place under the long shadow of the gravest political threat Netanyahu has ever faced—police investigations into alleged corruption and accepting illegal gifts—details of which are leaked daily by anonymous sources. The fact that the sources are veiled makes it harder for his coalition to stand with him against the pressure to resign—for fear of political backlash against them from unidentified but potentially powerful actors. This political scheme is being conducted in the dark, stealthily. Even if Bibi doesn’t resign, the smear campaign has been eroding his support.
Netanyahu is also down in the polls to charismatic, center-left leader Yair Lapid, and he faces battering in his coalition from Naftali Bennett’s Jewish Home Party and Likud activists to aggressively build new settlements, annex areas of the West Bank, and reject the two-state solution. Another thorn in his side is the recent state comptroller’s report on Operation Protective Edge in Gaza, which blames his administration for failing to adequately brief his security cabinet on Hamas terror tunnels. With controversy swirling about him, rightwing politicians are lining up in the wings with an eye on taking the helm.
In light of the domestic turmoil, “Netanyahu does not need a green light to build in the West Bank, a commitment to move the embassy, or a vow to tear up the Iran deal. What he needs is no hint, no sign, and no leak of the slightest public or private disagreement with Trump,” said Michael Koplow, Israel Policy Forum director. His success in reaffirming the U.S.-Israel relationship “should demonstrate his capacity to keep that relationship unbreakable.” And that ace in the hole strengthens Israel, and helps neutralize Bibi’s political opponents.
Pressures from the Right
Several White House statements such as building new settlements or expanding existing ones "may not be helpful in achieving [peace]" will help Netanyahu resist pressure from Bennett and right-wing Likud ministers on settlement policy, said former U.S. mediator Dennis Ross. A compromise with the United States that permits building only in large West Bank settlement blocs likely to remain part of Israel in a future deal would also help him withstand pressure from the Right.
Nevertheless, his hard-right coalition members were jubilant when neither leader endorsed the two-state model as the sole solution for peace with the Palestinians.  This stance instantly won Netanyahu support and credibility from his political base. The dramatic break with what has been the bedrock of U.S. Middle East policy since the Clinton administration, and is widely viewed as the formula for peace, has also been the mantra of the Israeli Left–“led by military and legal fraternities and the media—enemies of Netanyahu from the beginning,” said journalist Caroline Glick.
Pressures from the Left
After Netanyahu’s strained encounters with Obama, political rival Lapid accused him of damaging Israel’s alliance with the United States with a “condescending and disparaging attitude toward Israel's closest friend in the world, a country whose relationship with us is our greatest security asset.”  Then along came Trump, warmly welcoming the Prime Minister of Israel to the White House. In a sign of the center-left’s disarray, they issued no statement in response to the Trump-Netanyahu visit.
The two leaders  have found common ground—not only in center-right ideology and leftist “shadow” agendas working to undermine them—but also in strategies for fighting their nations’ common enemies—especially radical Islam.
“By working together, Trump and Netanyahu can defeat the common foes of their countries,” Glick said, “and the success of their joint efforts will bring about the defeat of their bureaucratic enemies and the establishments working to undermine them.”
Banjos, Gold and a few Ghost Stories
By CARL WHITE
Life in the Carolinas
The room was filled with visual displays of history and the sounds of Bluegrass music. I found myself in the midst of the long running weekly Friday night Bluegrass gathering with an audience of enthusiastic toe tapping fans.
I’m also a big a fan of Bluegrass music and the culture that defines it.  A few years back, during an on location production trip to Leatherwood Mountains in the Blue Ridge, I had a long conversation with Jared Shumate. I had been considering producing a program about the culture of Bluegrass music for some time. I wanted to hear Jared’s thoughts because of his work as an associate producer on Life In The Carolinas. More than that we had the common experience of growing up in the foothills of North Carolina where great Bluegrass music is common place. It was during that conversation that the decision was made to launch The Bluegrass People, which can best be described as a living organic documentary project; it has a growing national and international following.
Over the years I have made several trips to Gold Hill for different stories, including the Friday night bluegrass event at the Montgomery General Store, run by Vivian and Hoppy. Vivian Hopkins is a business owner, an author, musician, Roades Scholar and the President of the N.C. Bluegrass Music Association. Most important, she has become a wonderful friend and has worked with me on many projects, including The Bluegrass People.
Gold Hill is a charming historic destination with a definite place in history. It was once said by the mayor of Charlotte that he hoped that one day Charlotte would become as prosperous as Gold Hill. It is noteworthy that his wish did come true.   The reason for the area's great wealth was due to the fact that Gold Hill was a successful gold mining community that predated the great California Gold Rush. Nearby Reed Gold Mine, established in 1799, has the prestige of being the first gold mine in America.
The dirt streets from the past have been paved. However, a wooden boardwalk on each side of the street gives you a sense of days gone by. It looks a bit like a movie set but the buildings and the people are real.
I discovered that there are many ghost stories relating to the time when Gold Hill was thriving. The area was home to thousands of miners, hotels, salons, brothels and a few churches. There are stories of fits of rage with love gone wrong, business dealings gone afoul and just plain horrific accidents that cost the lives of many. So if there were to be a place with a good offering of ghost stores, Gold Hill certainly has a past that fosters that notion.
I had the opportunity to produce a TV special on the subject of the Gold Hill’s history and ghost stories, and there were things that happened that I have no answer for. I did not feel fear or threatened in any way, but I do understand why these ghost stories have survived the passage of time.
I love discovering places that have many sides to them. You know, the kind of place where every time you visit you find something new.
Gold Hill has given me several gifts. I have enjoyed music and the family-like spirit that represents an important part of the wonderful culture of this region. I have learned more about American history and how gold was a game changer for so many.
I have walked where some of our ancestors walked and where some say they still do.

Thundercat review – adventurous ace of bass
Gorilla, Manchester The gifted bassist and Kendrick Lamar sidekick twists fusion, soul and hip-hop into magical shapes
Contrary to the lamentations of Ryan Gosling's Sebastian in La La Land, jazz is enjoying a surprising moment in the sun. Few would have predicted that the most acclaimed albums of the past two years would be partnerships with forward-thinking jazz musicians. On last year's Blackstar, the versatility and dynamism of Donny McCaslin's band enabled David Bowie to make one last leap into the unknown. On Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly before that, jazz was a means of connecting hip-hop to the ferment of the 1970s. Lamar's chief lieutenant was Stephen Bruner, the Los Angeles bass player who calls himself Thundercat.
Bruner is the son of Motown session drummer Ronald Bruner Sr and the brother of Ronald Bruner Jr, who has played drums for Prince and Stevie Wonder. He joined the veteran thrash metal band Suicidal Tendencies as a teenager, moving on to session work for the likes of Erykah Badu and Flying Lotus. His undulating solo albums blend jazz fusion, soul, hip-hop and yacht-rock with an eccentric sense of humour and a hazy sense of loss. Drunk, his latest, features Lamar and Wiz Khalifa as well as Michael McDonald and Kenny Loggins: an index of both his breadth and his clout. The album pushes his melancholy falsetto to the fore while his bass functions as the bubbling river that carries the songs along. His live shows are something else entirely. The river bursts its banks and runs wild.

Lizz Wright’s new song, “Painted Sky" (Don't Give Up On Us). Co-written by Maia Sharp and featuring Kenny Banks Sr. (piano) and Ted and Angela Jenifer (vocals). The video was produced by Monica Haslip.
I am not certain, but the image that appears at one minute into the video looks to me like Great Falls.
