I need some advice. My little sister has been hanging out with this guy lately. Ive known for ages, he’s really nice, but she’s seventeen and he’s going to be twenty in less that 6 months. I don’t know if they’re dating but I’m worried. That’s too old for her right? I can’t tell if I’m be overprotective because she’s my little sister or not. Am I being ridiculous or am I right to worry?

That’s a tricky one, because that’s the type of age gap that in some cases isn’t that big a deal and in other cases can be. Right now, he’s 19 almost 20 and she’s 17. So we’re looking at about a 2 1/2 to 3 year age gap? If she were 19 or 20 and he was 21/22, I’d say it was fine. If they were both younger, I’d say friendship is fine, dating maybe not, as there would have been a period she was in middle school while he was in high school, but there’s also this sweet spot of time where they both would have been in high school. However, as a teacher I especially know, there can be a huge difference in maturity between say, a freshman and a junior. 

I think the bottom line is this: you said you know the guy for awhile, and that he’s nice. I don’t see a problem with your sister being friends with him, it’s important to have friendships in multiple age groups, but I also don’t think your worries are unfounded. If nothing else, for both her safety and his, they should not date until after her 18th birthday, if dating is something they even want to do. But reaching the legal age of adulthood does not an instant, mature adult make, which not only applies to your sister, but to mister 19-20 year old as well. I’m 23 right now, and I’m LEAGUES above where I was when I was 19. These are the years where people change a LOT, our brains aren’t finished completely developing until around 25, and everyone is different. So proceed with caution, but not a full out stoplight.

💢 - Favourite angst headcanon? - I’m a sucker for Virgil putting himself through unnecessary amounts of pain, anxiety, or stress because he feels like it’s either his job, that he owes it to the others, or just that he doesn’t want the others to get hurt. He cares so much for them all that it’s physically painful, but he doesn’t care, he’d go through a million times more for their sakes.

I just made myself cry writing a thing. I’ve never done that before I’ve written some pretty angsty stuff. Ofc this one wasn’t a fic and is much more personal so that’s probably why but I felt the need to share this for some reason

Still, that’s good! It’s one of my favorite things about writing, how it helps release/process your emotions. When your own writing makes you emotional, it shows that you’re human and feeling things strongly!
