Re. Your women being so scared thing. And to be clear I mostly agree with you.
I'm not sure where you're from, but I'm from New York, and I can say for sure that I'd feel more safe in the most dangerous part of the UK than basically anywhere in the US. My Parisian aunt thinks Gare du Nord too dangerous to walk near under any circumstances, but to me it seems like a normal bigger train station level of danger, and the streets around it seem normal. I lived in a university town in the UK for a year, and I never felt in danger there or in London, even alone, even in the middle of the night. I was never alone in Berlin, but I was out at night, and I felt at least as comfortable as I would in New York. So I think, at last in the places I've been and from my experience, America is more dangerous and much scarier. I have never been street harassed in the UK, and I have been harassed and followed in New York plenty, and had several people attempt to attack me. Men in the US will also often harass you from a car, which is an explicit threat. It's also important to remember that parking lots are bad places to be and most of the US has to drive, and therefore park.
That said, I know some women who won't ride the subway at night, or at all, and that seems very paranoid to me. If you're riding at a remotely normal time and are paying any attention to your surroundings, you're almost certainly going to be fine. I also know girls who, even once they're in a car, of course, will send friends their location just in case. This seems extremely paranoid to me. Maybe check you're going the right way like one time. I do still think some of the things people do can be reasonable caution - yeah, didn't go hiking on a first date - but the perspective people are throwing at you strikes me as distinctly privileged. No one who's ever had a job can think that way. I've worked with a few women who took cars home after every shift, or their dad or their boyfriend picked them up in a car, and at that point, you have a job as a hobby, because unless he works nearby, you just spent your minimum wage on gas. If you take a cab home in New York, from Manhattan to any other borough, that's most of your pay. So to me, this level of paranoia generally reads that you've never had to be alone anywhere so you don't understand what it means, and you've never had to do shit with, and if you did do it, the money wasn't important.
Yeah a lot of time I get mad at this online because it just seems overly paranoid to me, and then a woman comes in with a personal experience or anecdotes, and it hits me that maybe the US *is* actually that bad? I live in Hungary, and I really like walking alone in the city at night, or going for long walks in the forest alone, and I've never really felt unsafe doing that, but - and this is crucial - neither have most of the women I talk to. Or at least, not to this degree. So, yeah, the US is possibly worse and more unsafe? I can believe that, it's just hard to conceptualize I guess, since the US likes to portray itself as tbe baseline for a "civilized" country, and I live in *Eastern Europe*. So there's preconceptions here, lol.
But yes, a lot of these, even when corrected for this, are just paranoid, there's no other way to see it. Like, no matter where you live, you truly do NOT need to share your location every time you leave home. And there's also the matter of being disconnected from the people and community around you, like being scared to help your neighbor or someone on your street. We live in a society, you kind of have to take an active part of it.
A lot of it is just a lot of energy spent on being scared every waking moment of your life. Like, okay, in the reddit thread I saw this in, there was a woman saying that she ALWAYS puts her ID in her front pocket when she goes outside so they can easily IDENTIFY THE BODY IF SHE DIES. Like what material good does worrying about this bring to your life? It's not even a self-defense technique, doing this will not help you with staying alive!! All it does is make you think about "oh no, I could get murdered" every time you leave the house. This is NOT a healthy mindset!
It's like a strange and widespread kind of anxiety, and the worst part is, it has you convinced it's necessary, and you can't get rid of it unless you make an active effort to do things despite being scared. First you have to convince yourself that you *won't* get murdered by your date if you don't share your location, and that's the hardest part. And yeah lol, having to do things alone helps you with this tremendously, because you realize that you've just taken the subway at night alone and survived. But if you're never forced to do things alone, you get stuck in this weird fear spiral, and whenever you see a stranger, you end up thinking about how they could murder you.

Objection!
Rafael Barba x fem!Carisi!reader
1k word count
Summary All you wanted was to be a lawyer like your big brother Sonny. So what happens when you get a job working under the famous ADA Rafael Barba
slow-burn, colleague to friends to lovers
Next Chapter
The day had finally come. I had successfully graduated Harvard Law. My Mum, Dad, brother Sonny and sisters Bella, Teresa and Gina had made the trip out of Staten Island to witness the graduation. The youngest of the Carisi clan, I choose to follow Sonny into the criminal prosecution career track. Sonny had recently transferred to the Elite Manhattan Special Victims Unit and was also studying at Fordham Law ‘to make myself a better detective’ he had said. Sonny and I, despite our 11-year age gap, were completely inseparable. He had been the one who got the rest of our family together to be here today. Sonny is the whole reason I was graduating today. He had encouraged me even after Mum and Dad had voiced their disappointment at my choice.
I had barely made it off the stage when Sonny had scooped me up in his arms and began spinning us around. He had the worlds biggest smile on his face and repeated over and over again how proud he was of me. Our parents and sisters soon joined us.
“I’m going to cook a big feast tonight just for you” Mom smiled.
“You always cook a big feast, that’s every meal for you” Dad scoffed.
“Oh shush you cranky old man” Mum swatted at him with open hands.
We all laughed at the pair and walked off to the cars. We had a long drive ahead of us back to Staten Island. After dinner I would then have to drive back into Manhattan with Sonny. I had come here with Sonny yesterday from his apartment in Manhattan and had no choice but to go back there with him tonight. Now I had graduated I had no clue what I was suppose to do. I had been applying for positions in almost every law firm in New York with no luck. I’d even applied for the DA’s office with no success. I knew Sonny would let me live with him for however long it took for me to find my feet. He had insisted on it in fact when I’d moved back to New York last month. This had been Mum and Dads complaint. I would waste my time on a piece of paper that would lead me nowhere. I’d even put in an extra two years on a masters degree just to increase my chances.
“Hay kiddo is everything okay?” Sonny spoke up “You’ve been silent for the last 45 minutes and you look worried”
“Maybe Mum and Dad were right” Was all I could get out.
“About what? Don’t tell me your doubting yourself now” Sonny smiled over at me.
“I spent the whole month applying for positions with no luck, all I’ve managed is a minimum wage bodega job. I can’t rely on you forever Sonny, you have your own life, the woman at work you said you fancy, while I just wasted six years to get a piece of paper that’s turning out to be useless. I wanted to be up there with the greats like Alexander Cabot and Rafael Barba” I sighed picking at my nails.
“Y/N Carisi always worrying” Sonny chuckled “Give it time you’ll get something soon; you don’t need to rush”
“I’m not trying to rush I just don’t like not knowing” I threw my hands up.
But wait I did. For 9 months I applied for any law jobs that came up. I worked my ass off at the bodega, saving every penny I could to get out of Sonny’s flat. Then one day it happened. I had been busy cooking dinner, a simple chicken alfredo, when Sonny basically smashed his way through the door. I hadn’t expected him home until much later. I knew they were having trouble catching the Central Park Strangler as the papers had dubbed him. A horrid man who would stalk lone women in central park, strangle and rape them. Sonny had said he was escalating an attack every night, he hadn’t killed anyone yet but Sonny was sure he would soon. He had made me promise not to leave the flat alone at night until they got the guy. He had left DNA at every scene so as soon as they got him he was going away for life. No chance of a plea bargain, no way to weasel out of it. Sonny had a huge smile on his face as he walked into the kitchen.
“I’m guessing by the smile on your face you caught your guy? That or you finally grew a pair and asked Amanda out and she said yes” I chuckled.
“Yes, well no, but yes” Sonny stumbled over his words while he hung his coat up and took his shoes off.
“Well which is it?” I laughed.
“We caught the guy, Barba had him shipped to rikers an hour ago” Sonny put his brief case on the bench and dug through it producing a manila envelope. “I also got this for you” he handed the envelope to me.
I wiped my hands off on my apron and took the envelope. I turned it over in my hands taking note of the District Attorneys office logo in the corner. I disregarded it as just being an envelope Sonny had handy. I turned the envelope over once more and unwound the string keeping it closed. Inside was a stack of paperwork maybe 30 pages thick. Written on top of the first sheet in bold letters were the words OFFER OF EMPLOYMENT. I looked up shocked at Sonny before looking back at the papers. We are pleased to offer you a position as an assistant to ADA Rafael Barba at the New York District Attorney Office.
“Oh Sonny this is amazing thank you” I pulled him into a hug.
“It was nothing I just called in a favour when I heard Barba needed some extra help” Sonny chuckled “All you need to do is fill in the forms and drop them off to Barba tomorrow. He says he’ll in his office from 3 onward”.
“I’ll fill them in first thing but for now lets eat!”.
“Oh you mean the food that’s burning on the stove?” Sonny chuckled.
“Shit!” I spun back to the stove but it was pointless the chicken had already started turning black and the pasta was almost boiled dry.
“I’ll order out and you can trying to salvage my pot and pan” Sonny laughed walking off phone in hand.

there may be nothing that tickles me more than a rom com (or any movie, but usually a rom com) set in new york that has absolutely no sense of geography. the characters will walk from times square to the brooklyn bridge in minutes. sure why not. then, every time they leave their office they seem to be in a different neighborhood. they’ll take an uber when they should take the subway and the subway when they should take an uber. they make minimum wage and and then return to their apartment that appears to be in midtown and has a perfect view of the empire state building. later they mention how they live in brooklyn. in fact, nothing exists beyond brooklyn and manhattan. the way it can manage to be nearly 100% wrong and perfect is a rare feat

What’s your point? Minimum was a $1.45 in 1969. 2024 it’s $15 in most places now. $1.45x10 $14.50/hr. to pay for $17,000x10? Nearly $15/hr to pay for $170,000 home. Then you have to subtract your monthly bills, food, and personal expenses from that. You shouldn’t be making minimum wage your entire life to pay for a house anyway. This is a pretty normal ratio anywhere that’s NOT in a major city like NYC or LA. Two towns in America are not the cost of living in every single place on Earth…log off of Twitter, move out of Manhattan, and live in Alabama or perhaps FLINT, MICHIGAN. There were also 3.6 billion people on the planet. Half as many people to house and feed using natural renewable global resources at half the speed. The only thing you should be going insane over is how much you didn’t pay attention in math class.

As it turns out, the employees at Strand Books are getting paid the NYC minimum wage of about $16/hr.
You know - poverty wages. In Manhattan.
Here’s the full article published 12/8/24:
Dozens of employees at one of Manhattan’s busiest and most iconic bookstores walked off the job on Saturday after contract negotiations failed to produce an agreement between their union and management.
Workers began picketing outside Strand Bookstore around 10 a.m. in what’s believed to be the first employee strike in nearly three decades at the popular bookshop.
UAW Local 2179, which represents the bookstore workers, says they are demanding a fair contract and a living wage. Many of the workers out on the picket line said that even though the holiday season is one of the store’s busiest times, many of its employees are struggling to live in New York on what they make.
“We’re just asking for a little bit more, that 50 cents more a year,” said Joel Gross, who works at the store. “If we can get that we can go back to work.’
In the meantime, striking workers are also calling on customers to honor the picket line and abstain from buying from the store.
Bookstore executives released a statement saying in part, “We respect and value our staff, and we have made sizable economic offers during this contract negotiation accordingly. The union has not been willing to accept those increases so far.”
Gothamist reports the union is calling on a $2 increase to employee base pay, which currently starts at $16 an hour, the minimum wage for New York City. The union also wants that rate to increase by $1.50 in the second and third years, but management is reportedly countering at 50 cents for each.
“Everybody wants to go back to work. We love sharing books with people, we love serving the readers of the city,” Gross added.

I really don't understand why people argue with me over things that really aren't debatable.
Long ago, I was scoffing at how unrealistically spacious a leading character's apartment in New York City was depicted in whatever movie, and my friend started questioning whether spacious apartments in New York were so unreasonably priced that a quirky college student earning minimum wage couldn't afford one.
Why are we arguing about this? It is a WELL known narrative trope that housing in high density extremely popular cities is comically bad, but it's also not far from reality.
Only one of us had recently visited someone living in downtown Manhattan and witnessed Big City Living Conditions For Quirky Artist Types directly.
You want to argue for the sake of arguing? Fuck off.

Please tell us what New York is like, is it anything like the movies tell us? And the million dollar question is do the rats run the city? Lmao
Partially like the movies. If you're thinking of sex in the city and gossip girl, then that's the richer side. The upper east side, Manhattan in general and Astoria Queens, Bushwick Brooklyn, etc are like another world of people who are nepo babies, transplants that are rich or trust fund babies. but certain places in those areas are a vibe and have very artistic and unique people. Everything is Borough based nowadays.
People shit talk the Bronx, a lot due to gun violence, scamming, etc. But , Brooklyn is the same.
Rats don't run the city as much as people may think. The city is just dirty in general. More like the aggressive homeless men who pissy and shit in public places are the problem. I find that the city is over hyped, overfilled, and the worst it's ever been now. You're basically working for rent and utilities if you make minimum wage or 40% above that amount. The beggers , addicts, and greedy landlords are what's ruined the city amongst other things.
I say now; it's a good place to visit but not to live.

minimum wage is like 15k, 15/hour is like 31k, 30/hour is like 62k
the AVERAGE salary in the us is like 63k
65k is like 5,400 monthly.
the average cost of living for a SINGLE person is 44k. so a single person making 65k would probably be pretty well off i’m guessing?
however. for a family of four i’m getting numbers from 80k-100k yearly (guess you don’t want to be a single parent of multiple children then)
of course where you live will effect cost of living, like living in some place in ohio is way less expensive than say, manhattan in nyc. like i think the ohio cost of living is probably like 24k yearly which 65k is a lot
anyway, 65k is probably comfortable for single people, in most areas. certainly not wealthy. or wealthy only by comparison to people who are struggling.
in my opinion once you get to a certain point with wages, where you’re making more than the bare minimum, it highly depends on how you spend the money and take care of expenses. i know people who make 30/hr during the school year, not even full time, and like 11/hr in the summer and they still go on trips and take good care of themself. they do NOT however, pay for rent which is a big factor.

Live from New York
Standing in line to board your flight, you basked in the feeling of possibility. From here on out, anything could happen. After years of working minimum wage at Dairy Queen, you had finally saved enough money to move to New York City. You loved your small town in Iowa, but there was something magical about the Big Apple. There, you could start over and be somebody new. After high school, you wanted to go to college. Some prestigious university would've been your dream, like Harvard, Yale, or Fordham. You had the grades, but you couldn't afford to pay tuition. So you stayed. Luckily, the DQ was hiring, and you got decent pay. By no means were you living large, but you got by. Now, with enough money saved up, you bought a one-way ticket from Des Moines to JFK. You had reached out to a friend living in the city, and they agreed to let you stay with them for a little bit until you found a job and your own place. Armed with just your backpack filled with a couple hundred bucks, some clothes, and a dream, you boarded the flight.
Once you landed in Queens, you desperately navigated the terminal, trying to find your way to the E train into Manhattan. Finding the station, you waited patiently for the subway to arrive. Turning your backpack onto your stomach, you pulled it tightly into your torso. Everything you owned was in that bag, you couldn't bear to lose it. The roar of the approaching train filled your ears, and it skidded to a stop in front of you. The doors opened, and you found the car absolutely packed. You had never seen so many people in one place all at once. Forcing your way into the car, and finding a place to stand near the opposite door, you kept a close eye on the screen, waiting until the 5th Avenue and 53rd Street stop appeared. Then, as the subway stopped and the doors opened, you clutched your backpack and stepped onto the platform.
Exiting the station, you were engulfed by the sounds and sights of Midtown. Your friend lived in a small one-bedroom near 50th and 6th, right in the center of everything. Walking around, you found yourself enamored with the tall buildings and the busy people walking extremely fast. The route you were taking to your friend's apartment took you right past Rockefeller Plaza. Being the tourist you were, as soon as you passed the sign for NBC studios, you decided to pull your phone out of your backpack. Reaching in and then throwing your backpack over your shoulder, you looked up at the words. Growing up, you had seen this marquis on television, and now it was really here. Lifting up your camera, you snapped a photo.
Just as the shutter clicked, a man ran up from behind you and snatched your bag. "Hey!" you screamed. Without stopping, they continued to sprint and turned the corner before you even thought to run after them. Shit. Now what? Looking at the doors of the studio, you figured that they must have security cameras. They could help you. I mean, after all, everything you owned was in that bag. Stepping through the glass doors, you were astounded by the vast ceilings and smooth architecture. You were definitely in the big city.
Approaching the desk, before you could even open your mouth, the attendant looked up at you and gasped. "Sir, you're late, we need to get you upstairs now!" Before you even had the chance to respond, you were whisked away, being led towards an elevator. Shoving you into an elevator, the attendant mashed the button that said "8H." Looking dumbfounded, you opened your mouth to speak, but just as you did the doors shut and you began to ascend into the building.
This was weird, but hey, you had nothing else to lose. It's not like you were breaking in, you were put here. Once you got off the elevator, you would explain exactly what happened, and they would help you find security to figure out how to get your backpack back. As the elevator doors opened and you opened your mouth to speak, two female stylists rushed in and began ushering you through the hallways. The taller one began chastising you for running late as usual, without letting you get a word in. Giving up, you let them guide you into a dressing room. There, you were shoved into a seat. Finally, with the hustle and bustle finished, you finally had a chance to speak. "What's happening?" You managed to finally ask. The stylists looked at each other amused. Without saying a word, they reached towards your body and ripped off your clothes, leaving you nude apart from your underwear.
"Hey! What was that for?" You screamed at the pair. The shorter one explained. "We don't have time to take them off, Sir. Now hold still." The tall one pulled a white jar out of her bag, and the two began applying some sort of cream all over your chest. As the cream made contact with your skin, it began to heat up. As it did, firm muscles began pushing their way from your torso. Thick pecs formed a shelf and dark hair spread its way across them. The stylists massaged the cream into your arms, which flexed with new strength and were covered in that same hair. Your hands cracked as they grew large and manly. You were left with a thick beefy upper body.
The stylists massaged the cream into your feet, which grew and expanded, dark hairs emerging from the tops. After applying the cream to your calves, they stretched and ballooned as well. Your thighs were next, the short one was intensely working her hands around your thighs and shoved her hands under where you were seated. The cream made your legs thick and hairy, and your ass lifted you upwards on the chair. The short one continued to massage your thighs as the tall one applied the cream to your face. Your teeth whitened and your jawline sharpened. Your eyes lightened to a piercing blue. The tall one massaged your scalp, as your hair thickened and became immaculately styled, your head felt fuzzy. You remembered attending Harvard? No, you could never afford that. You were from rural Iowa. The shorter stylist lifted her hands from your thighs and pulled down your underwear, revealing your cock. Reapplying more cream to her palms, she began to massage your cock. Your head felt even fuzzier as the pleasure built up. You weren't from Iowa, you were from Staten Island. Your dick grew longer with each tug. You were married, and your wife loved your amazing body. The pleasure built up even more. Shit, everyone loved your amazing body. With one final tug, your thick cock shot out ropes of cum, and with it, every memory you had of your previous life. You lived in New York now.
The shorter stylist pulled out a towel and began to wipe your thick and muscled body clean, as the taller one grabbed your tailored suit off of the hanger. Standing up, you lifted your thick legs as the stylists pulled your pants on. You lifted your thick arms outward, exposing your forested armpits, as your dress shirt was brought onto your body. The two stylists buttoned you up. Lifting your arms again, you felt the fancy jacket pulled over you. Sitting down again, you were handed your tie. As you tied, the shorter stylist lifted your large feet into dress socks and placed them in your shoes. Once you finished tying your tie, you stood up, and without acknowledging the two women, you turned towards the door and began walking through the halls. You knew exactly where you were headed. As you reached the backstage area, a man placed your mic on your jacket. Finding your seat, you heard the intro music play. This was your job. The audience was applauding for you. You read your cue card.

The snipers were John Allen Muhammad (age 41 at the time) and Lee Boyd Malvo (age 17 at the time), who traveled in a blue 1990 Chevrolet Caprice sedan. Their crime spree, which began in February 2002, included murders and robberies in several states, which resulted in seven deaths and seven injuries. In total, the snipers killed 17 people and wounded 10 others in a 10-month span.[2]In September 2003, Muhammad was sentenced to death, and in October, Malvo, a juvenile, was sentenced to six consecutive life sentences without parole. In November 2009, Muhammad was executed by lethal injection. In 2017, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit vacated Malvo's three life sentences without parole in Virginia on appeal, with re-sentencing ordered pursuant to the Supreme Court's ruling in the case of Miller v. Alabama, 567 U.S. 460, 132 S.Ct. 2455 (2012), which held that mandatory life sentences for juvenile criminals without possibility of parole violated the Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The U.S. Supreme Court granted certiorari, with oral arguments held on October 16, 2019.[3] Should he be resentenced, Malvo's minimum prison sentence will be determined by a judge; the available maximum sentence would be life imprisonment. The ruling does not apply to the six life sentences Malvo received in Maryland.[4] On February 25, 2020, after the passage of a Virginia law allowing those who are serving life sentences for offenses committed before the age of 18 to seek release after serving 20 years,[5] the U.S. Supreme Court case was dismissed at the request of lawyers on both sides.[6]

Day 15 of Christmas: Attend a tree lighting!
The war of the Winchesters silently raged on from last night. Although during breakfast you’d asked to put the feud aside for tonight since you’d be going out. Sam thankfully agreed and Dean reluctantly did too. You were all in the impala driving for a while. You were still in deep taking your nap, as was Sam. You were driving to New York. Usually, it would take about a day, but at the speed, you were going, the back roads, and all of you switching off to drive, you’d be there by nightfall. Which was perfect. Taking minimal bathroom breaks was a good choice too. And although the route forced you to take the normal highways, you were making excellent time. You’d be driving for the last time of the day, with 3 more hours to go, you still had daylight left and you encouraged the boys to get some rest after you switched. They asked if you’d be okay. You told them you’d already used the bathroom and had a long playlist ready to go. You were just gonna enjoy the ride.
When you pulled off, you saw the boys settle in and close their eyes. Your music made soft background noise and you softly nodded your head to the beat. Following your navigation directions, you thought about how exciting it was to finally return to New York. You’d lived there for about 5 years. You’d ultimately saved enough money from your job to move there and not be completely broke when you got there. You lived in comfort for a few months so you could find a job you liked. Living in Lower Manhattan, you had to find a job that would comfortably fit your desired lifestyle. And you did, you found a small mom-and-pop type shop in Brooklyn that was paying a considerable amount over minimum wage. You immediately took the job and every morning for 5 years, you’d take the 30 minutes subway ride to Brooklyn from lower manhattan. And the days you had off you spent exploring the city.
Your favorite place is the small flower garden in a remote part of Central Park. You’d bring your laptop and books with you and nestled into your little spot, saying hi to the little old lady who was always there when you got there and she’d leave after you settled in/. You always thought she was watching your spot for you. You had so many…. interesting stories in your time living in the city. It was crazy and stressful at times, but every night you’d fall asleep to the comforting sound of the city. Cars honking and the endless humming of all the LED lights from Time Square.
It was nice to fall asleep to that every night. Which is why it was such a shock for you to move to Kansas with the boys. No cars honking, no bright lights covering your walls while you slept. I mean you knew it’d be different but not… that different. Now you sleep with your tv on just for some noise. Even going so far as to watch videos of people walking through your favorite city. It’s never filled the void but it did help you feel more at peace. Now you were going back, about two years ago you bought our small apartment so that you could always come back home whenever you wanted, and not having to worry about paying rent every month for a place you barely lived in anymore was definitely a weight off your back.
You knew that the city would be a big shock for the boys, so you’d prepared them while on the drive you’d started early that morning. Told them everything they should and shouldn’t do. The tips you’d picked up living there. Everything. You knew the boys would never be able to remember everything you said, but you reminded them that you were with them. You weren’t just gonna “poof into the ether.”. Having your own apartment in the city also saved you guys the money on an expensive ass hotel room. Everything in that city required you to give up your firstborn child, but living there so long, you know how to budget around the city. The sun was just starting to lower over the horizon when you’d made it into the state, with over one more hour to get into the city. When you saw the enormous fluorescent lights and the relatively slow traffic, you relaxed and breathed in the smell of home. Which was mostly smog and urine but still. You were home. You’d waken up the boys by turning up the radio to an excruciating level. They both shot up and gave you some serious bitch face when you laughed at their faces. You told them you’d be about 30 minutes away from your destination, and they once again relaxed in their seats. You’d been answering questions for them for about 25 minutes and almost to your surprise. It was only 5:45pm and the sun was just about to disappear behind the sky. You rushed quickly and finally got to that big, beautiful tree.
Sam was the first out of the car, followed quickly by you and Dean. All of you crossed the street as they pointed to the tree with child-like excitement. It was 5:55. Just five more minutes and the time passed as the boys talked about the huge ornaments. You started counting down from 10. The boys waited for the longest ten seconds of their lives. Other people buzz around you waiting for those lights to glow. As soon as you reached one, The lights on the trees lit up the streets and the Winchester's eyes. They chattered excitedly and Dean scooped you up in a bear hug. Twirling you around a bit and setting you back on your feet again, you giggled as Sam did the same. They couldn’t believe their eyes. And you’d known they would be able to sleep at your apartment for the rest of the night. No no, you’d be walking all over Time Square and anywhere else you could think to take them.
You couldn’t believe the country boys took so well to the big city. But these were the Winchesters you were talking about.
They could face anything.

3 Misconceptions about Americans and non-Americans
After interacting with many different people around the globe, especially on social media, I notice that Americans have very big misconceptions about the world outside, and non-Americans have big misconceptions about the USA. Most of it is just simple ignorance and not malicious racism, so I thought I’d try to clear some of it up.
3 Big Misconceptions that Americans have about the world outside the US.
1. Most other countries, especially non-Western ones, are not developed.
Many Americans don’t realize other countries are developed that we might realize., especially in countries that are described as “third-world.” One of Kenya’s biggest pastimes is cyber cafes, and they’re really cheap. Malaysia has a big (some locals would say internationally untapped) market for electronic entertainment.
Yes, there are countries that still need help and there’s a reason America is the biggest monetary contributor of foreign aid in the world, but take a step outside the continent and you’ll realize that things are not so different depending on where you are.
2. Other developed countries, especially in Europe, are paradises with more rights and better quality of life.
I’m not trying to poo-poo on other countries out of spite; I’m simply calling attention to facts. You know how you can’t be evicted in the U.S. for no reason? Australia doesn’t have that protection and they have a housing crisis now! You know how you can’t be fired in the U.S. if you get sick? You can in the UK! What many Americans assume are standard protections and rights that developed nations have? Other countries may not actually have them, even European ones!
I’ve noticed that Americans (and to a lesser extent all countries) have a bit of “grass is greener” syndrome when it comes to other countries. It’s fair to believe that other countries have some benefits that we don’t and it’s fine to want to implement them, but don’t automatically assume that moving to them will be “everything I have now +1.”
3. Other countries hate your country or consider you the laughingstock of the world.
Sorta. Many of them do, but in my experience, if you get non-Americans in a neutral setting and ask them about their own country’s politics, economics, and/or social issues? Oh ho, brace yourself for a RANT. I’ve also noticed that many make fun of the U.S. as a form of “punching up” humor, and this is often fueled by a little resentment that U.S. culture and news constantly permeates modern news and entertainment discourse.
People like to make fun of the U.S., but there are just as many people who see the U.S. as a bastion, just ask protesters who are sick of their regimes like Hong Kong and Cuba. It’s easy to believe that America is hated everywhere, but much of that comes from a very American-centric perspective of the world and social media. It’s not as bad as you think.
3 Big Misconceptions that non-Americans have about the US.
1. All states have the same culture.
Because the U.S. is so large, it has so many different geographical areas and so many different cultures who have called this place home. Louisiana is very different from Oregon. California is different from Texas. New York is different from Florida. Kansas is different from Massachusetts. Heck, even adjacent states like Idaho and Washington are wildly different! Or even in States like California, you’ll find that the coast and southern areas of the state are have completely different cultures from the northern and eastern areas. The State of New York? The New York you see in the movies is just the tiny little island of Manhattan and the rest of the state is almost nothing like it!
There are rivalries between states that you might see echo rivalries like Scotland and England, Sri Lanka and India, Sweden and Denmark, or Tanzania and Kenya.
Financially, there’s a lot of disparity as well. A poor person in America is statistically better off than a poor person in many other countries, but don’t let that fool you. There is a lot of income and lifestyle disparity in the U.S. between the rich and the poor. Heck, the minimum wage and standard of living varies depending on which state you’re in! A studio apartment in New York City is MUCH more expensive than a two-storey house in Nebraska!
Point is, there is no “average” American.
2. The President is the leader of our country and can make laws and declare war.
This idea that the president is our leader is a misconception that started with Teddy Roosevelt, arguably our first “celebrity president.” (Some argue it was Lincoln, but I digress.) The president is merely the leader of our executive branch of government. We have an executive branch, a legislative branch, and a judicial branch. Each has checks and balances towards the other.
What powers does the president have? Check here. The office more limited than you might think. Many powers you think he has are actually delegated to the other branches of government or even the states themselves.
3. We are refused treatment or bankrupted by medical bills because we do not have socialized healthcare.
I’m not trying to defend our healthcare system as perfect (oh HELL no, it needs some big improvements), but the idea that we can get bankrupted by an accident is simply untrue. In fact, it is ILLEGAL for a hospital to charge a person more than they can afford or refuse them treatment for a medical emergency. It’s gotten to the point that even many Americans don’t realize they have this right!
Side note, this is an annoying thing about our culture and laws. Because we have been granted so many freedoms and protections, you see some people like landlords and hospitals try to get you to waive those freedoms and protections in contracts which is why it’s so important to read the fine print before you sign anything.

So You Want to Buy a Togepi: Estimated Minimum Import Costs for Pokémon
In this article, you’ll learn how the following relate to buying a Togepi: • The price of a used 2001 Honda Civic in 2005 • The legality of buying Pokémon and legal loopholes • Shipping cost per mile between Japan and Baja California • How much it costs to import rice crackers from Japan into Manhattan • Swedish tax rate income deductions • How much an 11-year-old is paid to throw 2.6 pounds • Recommended percentage of income for discretionary spending • The average wage of a construction worker in the U.S. in 2005 • Unexpectedly athletic obese people
Introduction
But, somewhere along the line in this story, someone probably bought a Togepi.
And how much did that someone pay?
Caveats
The following will assume there are not dedicated breeding operations for Pokémon for export to Orre, and will not be considering monetary inflation in the Pokémon world. These are all rough calculations.
Some Trainers probably too young for a job have Togepi. These can be presumed to be gifts, or a suggestion that the labor cost of obtaining Togepi is lower than calculated. As it is impossible for the player to breed a Pokémon in Pokémon XD, it is unclear whether there are breeding operations in Orre.
Base Labor Cost
The price of chucking six Pyukumuku back into the ocean is 20,000 P2, or, logically, ~3,333 P per Pyukumuku. Notably, one also has to find them, not just chuck them, so there's a search cost involved.
Pyukumuku weighs 2.6 pounds. A baseball, which will be used as a proxy for a Poke Ball, weighs about 5 ounces. There are 41.6 ounces in 2.6 pounds, so it would be, very roughly, 8.32 times harder to throw a Pyukumuku into the ocean than to throw a Poke Ball the same distance. So the labor cost of finding a Pokémon and throwing a single Poke Ball is, at minimum, roughly 401 P (or 400.6 P not rounded up) which converts to $3.14. The material cost of a single Poke Ball is 200 P ($1.56), so the total minimum capture cost would be roughly 601 P, or $4.70.
But, if all one is doing is throwing, not battling, one would want a stronger Poke Ball: an Ultra Ball, for example. That's 1,200 P in Johto and Kanto (outside of Let's Go Pikachu and Let's Go Eevee), so the equivalent of $9.39.
Therefore, the minimum cost of obtaining a Togepi from the wild would be about 601 P ($4.70) if using one Poke Ball with a lucky shot, or to 1,601 P ($12.53) if using an Ultra Ball.
Cost Checking
With the exception of the Magikarp salesman, who’s a con artist, it is not generally legal to buy Pokémon directly. It is, however, possible to buy coins at Game Corners and use those coins to buy Pokémon. The coin conversation value is 50 coins per 1000 P, so 1 Coin is Worth 20 Pokédollars. Pokédollars are based on yen. Therefore, the coin cost of Pokémon sold indirectly through Game Corners can provide a rough proxy of the market prices.
Celadon Game Corner Prizes (as of Generation III Abra = 180 C (3,600 P/$28.18) Clefairy = 500 C (10,000 P/$78.27) Dratini = 2800 C (56,000 P, $438.31) Scyther = 5500 C (110,000 P, $860.97) Porygon = 9999 C (199,980 P, $1,565.24) Note: they're all different levels, which makes it hard to figure out their prices if they were equivalent levels.
These prices make sense, as they correspond to the Pokémon being increasingly hard to find and catch.
Abra: Found in two routes; encounter rate of 15%; hard to catch because it uses Teleport, although multiple strategies can reduce this risk or eliminate it entirely. It's possible to combine Ultra Balls with other trapping strategies, so it's not that hard to catch if one's prepared. Clefairy: Found only in Mt. Moon; low encounter rate of 1-6%. Unlike Abra, it doesn't require unusual techniques, though it is harder to find. Dratini: Only in the Safari Zone, can't be legitimately obtained by battling; can't use Ultra Balls; low encounter rate (15%), high base flee rate (35%). Scyther: Only in the Safari Zone, can't be legitimately obtained by battling; can't use Ultra Balls; low encounter rate (4%); high base flee rate (45%). limited number of steps allowed in the Safari Zone. Sweet Scent is a workaround against the step count, but they still have to go through quite a lot of non-target Pokémon first. Porygon: an artificial species that doesn't exist in the wild and can only breed with Ditto. Its exclusivity likely explains its high price.
Market Cost of a Togepi
Eevee is a suitable proxy for a Togepi: throughout most of the games, it is only possible to get an Eevee as a gift or trade, making Eevee similar to Togepi in how it can be obtained. An Eevee, which is worth 6,666 C, is worth 133,320 Pokédollars. If Pokédollars are equivalent to yen, the yen value of an Eevee converts to 1,043.57 US dollars as of May 20, 2022.
If using the price of an Eevee as a proxy for a Togepi, a Togepi is worth 133,320 P, or 221.8 times the minimum cost of just catching it. This surely attests to its rarity and high demand.
Criminal Surcharge
It’s likely selling Pokémon is illegal or frowned upon. The strongest evidence for this is the fact that, in the games, Team Rocket's focus is stealing or catching strong or rare species of Pokémon to sell. In Red & Blue and its remakes, the Celadon City casino is secretly run by Team Rocket, suggesting an association of some sort between selling Pokémon as casino prizes and criminal activity. The Celadon Game Corner could very well be a front for selling Pokémon Team Rocket has stolen or captured. Of all the Game Corners which can be visited, only the ones in Goldenrod City and Celadon City in Johto and Kanto, respectively, allow the sale of Pokémon by means of coins, which may imply selling Pokémon is not universally legal. Furthermore, even if selling Pokémon indirectly is legal, it may be frowned upon: the citizens of the Celadon Game Corner also think the casino is bad for the city’s image, and it’s possible the casino’s sale of Pokémon is part of this complaint.
To determine the different prices between legal and illegal Pokémon-derived things, it it is useful to consider Slowpoke Tails. A Slowpoke Tail from Johto, where it is only sold by Team Rocket, costs 9,800 P, while the camp cooking ingredient Smoke-Poke Tail in Galar is 2,200 P, which is surprisingly inexpensive, particularly since Slowpoke is not native to Galar's populated core. Slowpoke Tails are apparently not even a rare and expensive delicacy, at least not universally: in Alola, simmered Slowpoke tails are sold in convenience stores. Notwithstanding the food processing to smoke Slowpoke tails, we can presume selling something illegally makes something cost about 4.45 times more.
So what if a Togepi, or some other Pokémon, can only be imported by dubiously legal means? Assuming a 4.45x crime multiplier to the base Game Corner price for an Eevee (proxy for a Togepi), the price of a Togepi would be 593,274 P, or $4643.8865.
Shipping Cost
Lava Cookies (a local specialty made only in Lavaridge Town, Hoenn) cost P 1000 (7.76 US Dollars) in Unova, and only 200 P (1.55 US Dollars) in Hoenn, so the cost in Unova is five times greater than the original cost. This part of Unova, Nimbasa City, is based on Midtown Manhattan, according to the Pokémon world in relation to the real world article on Bulbapedia. Lavaridge is based on Taketa City in Ōita Prefecture, Japan. Using a quick Google check, the distance between these two locations is 7,087 miles.
The difference between 1000 and 200 is 800. 800/7087= ~0.11 P per mile. Distance between San Felipe (proxy for Gateon Port) and Chiba City (proxy for Vermilion City) is 5,742 miles, which is actually shorter than the estimated distance between Lavaridge Town and Nimbasa City. 0.11 * 5,742 miles = 631.62 P, or an extra cost equivalent to...$4.90.
What about Five Island Meadow, which has a Team Rocket headquarters with Pokémon in cages? Mukojima Islands (proxy for Five Island Meadow, with the Team Rocket warehouse) to San Felipe is 5,943 miles away, and so has a cost of 653.73 P, or $5.08. Unless purchasing Pokémon illegally is cheaper, it would actually be less expensive to order it from Vermillion City. These calculations do not consider shipping costs within the region itself from warehouses to ports because it is likely extremely low: the Pokémon world has technology allowing one to trade across vast distances within the same region, or deposit a Pokémon in one computer and take it out from another computer.
Total Calculation
If selling a Togepi is legal, the base and shipping cost of importing a Togepi would be 133,952 (rounding up) P, or the equivalent of $1,038.9. If selling a Togepi is not legal, and furthermore it must be sourced from Five Island Meadow to better hide the transaction, then it would cost 593,927.73 P, or $4,645.87.
For comparison, 9,999,999 Pokédollars is the maximum amount of money that can be held in the Orre region games, so the player could theoretically pay for importing a Togepi.
Affordability
Let’s assume, based on cursory financial advice from N263, that the payout from Trainers is no greater than 30% of their hourly wage. There are likely many exceptions to this, but this will work as a rough calculation.
For a more fine-grained approach of how easily people can afford a variety of Pokémon, one would use the 2005 data for Arizona construction workers, scientists, average pay for a secretary in Phoenix, Arizona, and the mayor of Phoenix. These correspond to the Worker and Cipher R&D Trainer classes, Cipher Peon Exinn (pretending to be the secretary of Trest, mayor of Phenac City, which corresponds to Phoenix, Arizona), and Mayor Es Cade/Evice, who was the former mayor of Phenac City.
However, for the sake of concision, we’ll use construction workers as a baseline for affordability of importing Pokémon, since construction workers are generally not paid as much as, say, mayors, secretaries and scientists. Using the national employment and wage data of the U.S. in 2005, the mean (average) hourly wages for a construction worker in national data in 2005 is $18.39. In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, there's one Trainer of the Worker Trainer class who's dressed as a construction worker and has specific prize money information. Worker Dobit's prize payout in the second match with him is 1,000 P, equivalent to $7.82 USD. Apparently, he's paid more than the national US averages for construction workers in 20054; 30% of that would be ~5.517 (or $5.52 in real money). We can assume he’s paid the equivalent of about $26.06 an hour: substantially greater than the average in real-world equivalent data, and greater than the 75th percentile in real-world equivalent data.
Worker Dobit’s yearly wages (assuming no tax) would be: $46,240.00. The minimum import cost of a legal Togepi is $1,038.9, or about ~2.25% of Worker Dobit’s income. or comparison, consider a large purchase a person of significant income but frugal preferences is likely to buy: a used car. A reasonable proxy is the price of a used Honda Civic (2001) in 2005: the Honda Civic model is considered safe, affordable, reliable, and long-lasting, so it would appeal to someone of frugal preferences. The average price of a used Honda Civic (2001) in 2005 was $16,226.34, of 34.1% of Worker Dobit’s yearly wages.5 In comparison, a Togepi is 6.40% of the price of the Honda Civic.
But what about Worker Dobit’s living expenses? People save money to buy and maintain things like cars, homes, college funds and educational debt, and medical savings and medical debt. However, the Pokémon world seems very affordable compared to equivalent real-life locations, with a few oddities, such as the ludicrous price of a bicycle in Kanto. One should note, though, that people very rarely own cars in the Pokémon world, and when they do, they’re very rarely actually used, suggesting low fuel, maintenance, and insurance costs. Homes also seem affordable, as there’s only a few depictions of people who are likely homeless, and the only two unambiguous cases occur in unusual circumstances.6 With the possible exception of elderly people (as some use canes), it seems there’s virtually no physical disability in the games’ depiction of the Pokémon world: even the people of excess weight (whether they are overweight or obese is hard to tell in the art style) do not seem significantly physically impaired, despite the near-absence of mobility aids. Research on Bulbapedia has not revealed any information about college in the Pokémon world being difficult to afford.
One may wonder how the Pokémon world can afford such a utopia. Most likely, the labor of Pokémon makes life easier and more affordable, but let’s assume Swedish tax rates, just to make things a little more realistic. Worker Dobit’s income is $46.240.00 a year, which converts to to 454,705.66 Swedish kroma. (rounding up to 454,706) Using the calculator from Investomatica7 and using the calculator’s default municipality tax rate of Sweden (Stockholm), Worker Dobit’s income after tax would be 323,347 kr, or $32,873.01. Under Swedish tax rate conditions, importing a Togepi has a minimum price of 3.16% of Worker Dobit’s income. However, given the lack of public amenities (e.g., public transit, schools) in Orre, the tax rate may very well be lower than this.
It may be that when people in Orre import Pokémon, the Pokémon are regarded as one might regard a car, as a means of self-expression, societal expectations, and achieving greater convenience or participation in society (i.e., in car-dominant communities). Most Pokémon, however, would be much cheaper to obtain than a Togepi, with a tiny fraction of the cost of a relatively inexpensive used car.
On the whole, it seems plausible even someone in Orre working in a low-paying job could import several Pokémon, even expensive ones.
