ASCE Champions Continuing Education for Engineers
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) is an international organization that has supported civil engineers on a global scale since 1852. Among its many services, ASCE provides a wide range of educational courses and programs to advance its members’ professional development further. Its educational opportunities include online courses, webinars, seminars, and annual conferences. For example, ASCE offers construction certificate programs that cover infrastructure and building projects.
Each construction certificate program is available online. Attendees can complete the on-demand programs at their own pace. To obtain the certificate, attendees must pass an assessment at the end of the program. Assessment typically entails simply multiple choice questions. Attendees earn 2.6 continuing education units (CEU) upon completing the program.
The Construction Engineering certificate program tackles the fundamentals of construction contracts and administration. It consists of two core courses focusing on contract administration and project planning. Engineers who take the course can choose one of two tracks based on their interests. They can either select the Unit Price track or the Lump Sum track. Additionally, they complete two elective courses, such as Alternative Project Delivery.
In addition to certificate programs, ASCE delivers live seminars addressing topical areas of civil engineering. In December, ASCE is holding a face-to-face seminar to discuss the fundamentals of earthquake engineering. The seminar aims to inform attendees about structural basics related to seismic building design.
Live webcasts allow attendees to benefit from ASCE expertise remotely. For instance, ASCE recently updated webcast sessions exploring dam and levee safety. It also added new sessions detailing design-build contracting for public works projects, the design of foundations for coastal flooding, and applied structural vibration analysis.
Although members can access these paid services, they are also eligible to choose up to 10 webinars for free. Webinars span various topic areas, from architectural and environmental engineering to transportation.
Furthermore, ASCE provides on-site professional training for groups. More than 300 organizations from 17 countries signed up for ASCE training services. Their construction and development training programs help attendees better understand construction costs, management, and construction site safety. Other training programs tackle water systems, tunnel design, and bridge rehabilitation.
The ASCE Practice of Engineering (PE) exam review series helps attendees prepare for their exams. The four-part series covers key areas of engineering: electrical systems, construction administration, mechanical systems, and structural systems. The series instructors highlight important strategies to complete the exam successfully.
Engineers with a specific interest in technical knowledge and advances in civil engineering would benefit from attending the ASCE committee techsessions. Committee techsessions run for one to three hours, are open to members and non-members, and end with a post-session assessment. They are delivered in person or virtually. Recent virtual techsessions discussed natural infrastructure, fire engineering, and sustainable approaches to civil engineering projects. Techsession attendees can earn professional development hour (PDH) credits.
ASCE members interested in sharing their engineering expertise can sign up to become an official ASCE instructor. ASCE instructors have the opportunity to promote the latest civil engineering technology while increasing their client base. They also become involved with ASCE committee activities and forums.

PDH Online Courses for Professional Engineers
PDH online courses for Professional Engineers are an approved, convenient, cost effective, and safe alternative to fulfill your Continuing Education (CE) requirements for PE license renewal. The number of Professional Development Hours (PDH) required in each renewal cycle varies based on which state issued your license and is a requirement in most states.
Type of PDH Online Courses for Professional Engineers
There are three primary formats of PDH online courses:
On demand courses: an asynchronous process where the licensee receives a document that they review in their own time and come back to do the assessment or quiz. In most states you can fulfill your CE by only completing on demand online courses.
Timed and Monitored courses: specific requirement of the state of Ohio, partial CE must be completed with “Time and Monitored” (T&M) online courses, i.e. the time licensee spends on each part of the course must be monitored to ensure minimum time is spent on each course section. PDH STAR has developed a number of T&M courses to fulfill Ohio specific requirements. Our on-demand as well as live or interactive webinars are also accepted as T&M online courses.
On demand webinars: all states accept on demand webinars, essentially pre-recorded narrated videos. On demand webinars can also be used as “Timed and Monitored” courses to satisfy Ohio licensing requirements. The licensee must pass the assessment at the end of the course.
Live and interactive webinars: accepted by all states, live and interactive PDH online webinars are instructor led sessions that typically do not have an assessment at the end of the webinar. However, presence and participation throughout the webinar is required in order to obtain the Certificate of Completion at the end of the webinar. Some states require that part of your online CE is obtained via webinars where you can have live interaction with the instructor, either via voice, chat, or email. PDH STAR Live Interactive Webinars comply with these requirements. For example, New York State require 18 hours (out of the total of 36 hours) to be completed through courses with live interaction between the instructor and participants.
Approval of PDH Online Courses for Professional Engineers
Some states require preapproval of CE course providers. PDH STAR is approved in all states that require course provider pre-approval. You can complete your training with PDH STAR with a piece of mind knowing that the courses you take are guaranteed to be accepted by your state licensing board.
PDH Online Continuing Education State by State Requirements
Each state has its CE requirements. The license renewal period can vary and is typically either biennial or triennial. The NCEES recommends 15 hours of PDH hours per year for license renewal, but every state is free to set its requirements. PDH STAR has compiled convenient packages for each discipline for each state that is guaranteed to be accepted by your licensing board for full or partial state CE requirements.
In addition, NCEES states that a CE course is “Any qualifying course or activity with a clear purpose and objective which will maintain, improve, or expand the skills and knowledge relevant to the licensee’s field of practice. Regular duties are not considered qualified activities.”

Did you know that Simpson Strong-Tie offers free education and training to the construction industry?
Indeed, we do. For several decades, Simpson Strong-Tie has made a commitment to supporting our industry, and each year we educate tens of thousands of industry pros — engineers, architects, dealers, contractors and building inspectors — about the latest building code updates and best construction practices.
Our regional training centers offer workshops providing solution options to meet current construction industry challenges, with instruction on proper specification, correct installation and the inspection of connectors and structural systems. Many of the courses include opportunities for hands-on installation and testing demonstrations of Simpson Strong-Tie products. Additionally, we offer courses on topics — such as changing construction practices, or building to resist seismic forces or high winds — of particular relevance to specific geographic regions.
This commitment to education sets us apart within the manufacturing industry, and it’s an aspect of our customer service in which we take great pride as a company.
Why does Simpson Strong-Tie offer training to construction industry professionals?
Simpson Strong-Tie has been designing and manufacturing construction solutions for more than sixty years, with the goal of helping people build safer structures. Construction is an industry we’re deeply committed to, and we take our responsibilities as a building manufacturer very seriously. All our training efforts are ultimately focused on improving construction quality and the overall strength and safety of structures.
More specifically, we want to make sure the right products are specified and that they’re installed correctly, for the safety of the building occupants and the reputation of all our partners — specifiers, contractors and dealers.
Besides all the good business reasons to build lasting relationships with our customers, we have a passion for education and feel an obligation to support the industry and communities that have contributed to our success over the decades.
What topics does Simpson Strong-Tie cover in its training?

Modeling the Etching of Nanostructures
To learn about modeling the etching of nanostructures
To learn about modeling the etching of nanostructures, tune into this webinar featuring guest speaker Derek Bassett from Tokyo Electron America.
In semiconductor device manufacturing, the etching out of material in an acid bath in order to make various nanostructures is a basic and important process used throughout the industry. The mathematical modeling of these kind of processes is an important tool, since it is difficult or sometimes impossible to directly observe the etching process in situ.
In this webinar, Derek will show how to build a model using Fick’s law and surface reactions and how to describe the etching of a solid material using a quasi-steady-state numerical simulation. He will show the modeling process live in the COMSOL Multiphysics® software as well as discuss how to take into account the change in shape of the simulation domain. Simulation results will be investigated, including the uniformity of etching of adjacent structures, how long it takes for the material to be etched, the depth of the resulting trench and effect on reactants’ diffusion, and the influence of different process conditions.
The webinar will conclude with a Q&A session.
Numerical simulation of the change in shape from a phosphoric acid bath etching out horizontal disks in a nanodevice made of silicon nitride and silicon dioxide. From left to right: the liquid domain at the beginning of the etching process, liquid domain when the material removal is halfway through, and final liquid domain shape. The solid domain is not shown.
PRESENTERS:
Derek Bassett, Tokyo Electron
Derek Bassett graduated from Brigham Young University with a BS in chemical engineering in 2004 and earned his PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Texas in 2010. Since then, he has worked at Tokyo Electron in the Advanced Technology Group. His work involves modeling, designing experiments, and performing simulations in order to improve and optimize semiconductor production tools. Mostly, he focuses on the spraying, coating, etching, and drying of wafers and using fluid dynamics to better understand and optimize those processes.
