we're getting into the groove of things; everyone has at least a d8 for their highest value. we got our first d12 and our first d20 in this episode, from jennifer drips and g13 respectively. this means that they can auto-succeed on rolls under half their die value when not high stakes; for g13 that means any dc <10 tech check.

jennifer/russell currently has the best average distribution, with 6 skills blown up: 1d6, 4d8, and 1d12. vic/wendell isn't far behind, with 6 skills: 3d6, 1d8, and 2d10. on the other end of the scale, jack/paula, g13/usha, and greg/dang are specialized, with a relatively high success rate for their best skills. kingskin/liv is a bit of an outlier, with only 3 skills and a d8 to hot, but has some in-character abilities that make up for any deficit, e.g. reputation and unbelievable stunts (the grenade).

it's fun to watch how the mechanics reflect the story; it's self-evident that the more one rolls in a skill the more likely they are to blow it up. that's how we get g13's d20 in tech and jennifer's d12 in sneak. but the distributions also reflect how the character archetypes work:

jack manhattan is a hardy cop with a gun. best skill is weapons, with stunts, tough, and wits blown up as well. he doesn't need to be doing the more specialized skills, i.e. drive, tech--he's an investigator.

kingskin is a mafia don; he has people to do things for him. best skill is hot, with stunts and tough blown up as well. the fact that he doesn't have as high of die values comes down to luck, in part, but also to fewer rolls, given that he can succeed based on reputation.

greg stocks is an international spy; he has to be able to pull of the impossible and survive. best skills are stunts and tough, with weapons and wits blown up as well. he tends to prioritize his better skills in order to ensure success in the face of potential disaster.

vic ethanol is a guy whose superpower is car, but we haven't gotten him in a car for very long. best skills are tough and hot, with brawl, stunts, weapons, and drive blown up as well. he has to be more well rounded--when he's not working the specialty other skills have to come into play. he’s the only one who’s blown up in drive—i suspect as we come into the race that this will change, but vic will still be the driver of the group.

jennifer drips is a femme fatale spy. best skill is sneak, with brawl, tough, wits, hot, and weapons blown up as well. she has to be able to do it all; her strengths are split around the board so that she can get herself in and out of scrapes unscathed.

g13 is a genius hacker. best skill is tech, with stunts, sneak, and wits blown up as well. he has to be one of the best in the business to compete against the superhero types. he’s the only one to have blown up in tech, but is at a d20, and so serves as the tech specialist for the group.

okay I have some thoughts about liv and Wendell being a couple

first of all, all their interactions are cute and I love it

second, I don’t like pc/pc romance mostly because I feel awkward watching it. I already feel a little weird watching any d20 romance even if it’s between a players character and an npc because I feel like im seeing something I shouldn’t be but it helps that the dm plays a lot of characters and that’s just one of them. I feel extra awkward watching pc romances because I feel like a lot of characters have a lot of similarities to their players and players put a lot of themselves into their characters. Not saying because their characters have romantic feelings they as the players do, just that it feels significantly more like I’m not supposed to be there with pc romances

Chapter 5: The Worst Consequences

The room was silent, as the characters watched the black cloud linger at the top of the room.

“What is that?” Cayol asked, hoping to get some kind of answer.

“Yeah, Notey! Tell us!” Ellienne Emperaire shouted. She looked around the room, maybe something else had appeared in the room. The room was still empty, but not so white anymore. The black cloud’s shadow cast it in an eerie gray.

“Notey?” Aspen called out, “Hello? Notey?” He frowned when there wasn’t a response. “Earth to Notey! Did you just get distracted or something?” Aspen sighed and looked at his disc once again. Then at the cloud. He shrugged, why not?

Aspen proceeded to chuck the disc into the cloud.

“ASPEN!” One of the other, more concerned about the mysterious cloud, characters shouted.

The cloud rumbled and something dropped out of it.

A d20. 17. It read.

“What does that mean?” Aspen questioned, rolling his eyes. “Notey’s just fucking with us.”

“Yeah, like c’mon Notey!” Ellienne Emperaire agreed, “You promised us drama, where’s the betrayals! The actions! The fight scenes.”

“Would we have to fight each other?” Ion asked, “Or would there be people for us to fight?”

There was a beat of silence, as everyone looked to the black cloud again.

“I’m getting concerned,” Aspen mumbled, “And why did it give me a dice in return for me throwing my disk at it?” He picked it up, and looked around, “Wait...can I?” Aspen rolled the dice, “Roll for, uh, what is it again?”

“Initiative?” Ellienne Emperaire offered, “I don’t know, I don’t play DnD!”

But, in fact, they had done something. They had done something very bad.

The room rumbled loudly.

Roll for It.

“This is just DnD!” Aspen shouted, getting annoyed.

They had to huddle around the small die, ever so aware of the looming presence of the cloud, just a few feet above them.

“8.” Ion winced at the number. “That’s...not a great roll.”

Ellienne Emperaire grabbed the die next, “You fools, this is how you roll a die,” she said, rolling the die with confidence and flare.

“...10,” Ellienne Emperaire paused, “Well, it’s better than 8.”

“And I got a 12,” Aspen noted, “Well, I hope that’s good.”

“10 as well,” Cayol said. “That’s not much...a total of 40 though.”

The cloud seemed to react to the number. 40. There was a rumble, a loud aching rumble.

Then the walls fell and they weren’t alone.

Cap was online again, after ages, hoping to see her friends online.

But liv wasn’t online. Notey (PST) wasn’t online, neither were Aspen (PST) or Cole (EST). Not even Charlie. It was weird, they weren’t in a call or even online, not even Do Not Disturb!
