Favorite atla fic?

Oh. There was no way this wasn't going to become a list. Most of it is going to be maiko because I'm starved for content.

Basically any maiko fic written by annavale23. They have a way of writing the exact things that tickle my brain. My top picks are graphite and tea and fascinations. Both modern AU.

love is patient, love is kind by littlerosette: kataang fleabag AU. Read if you can handle the aansgt. I love Katara's characterisation in this one. And the writting is beautiful.

Saving Face by meltingglacier: Koh kidnaps Mai. It's very creepy and disturbing. I always imagined Koh and Mai encounter would be her bullying him. This is far from it, but it is absolutely amazing.

Dish Duty by Princeliest: Katara and Zuko try to make truce with varying degrees of success (or failure). Zuko gets into trouble (as is customary) and is surprised when Katara and Aang show up to save him. Has some whump.

Both Zuko vs Adults and The Little Lady serie by WinterSnufkin. Zuko vs Adults is exactly what is written on the tin. It has an Azula and Zuko story that's lovely. It has a maiko story too! The Little Lady is Zuko cross-dressing and all the feelings associated with it.

Nip it in the Bud by ranilla_bean: NSFW. Explicit. Zukka. This one is hilarious! Sokka is horny and dying.

reverberations by aerixlee: a modern AU maiko story I held off reading because it's modern AU. You would think I should've learned better by now. Anyways, this is actually amazing! (I've been trying to draw fanart for this one).

Killing Me Softly by iCeDreams: NSFW. BDSM maiko. Involves shibari. Explicit. I'm a kinky mfer and maiko doesn't have enough kinky smut with the exact dynamics that I like. (i.e. dom Mai/sub Zuko). This is the only one I found that checks the right boxes for me.

The Narcissist's Prayer by BigPurplePeep: the characterisation isn't exactly canon-compliant. But as far as the theme goes... I wish canon had tried to do what this story does!

Ironing Out the Kinks by vanillabutspicy: kataang. NSFW. Crack. Nothing explicit though. People try to convince Aang to have children with multiple women. kataang come with receipts. Hilarity ensues: for the reader, not for the people present.

Writing Patterns ~ Opening Lines

Rules: list the first line of your 10 most recent (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern!

I chose to limit myself to fics that I knew when I began them that they would be longer pieces and/or multichapter fics. I've excluded drabbles, outtakes, bonus content for completed fics etc, and any stories that I've posted only the first chapter.

First Line posted: “Three brunettes and a blonde walk into a bar,” Laura says and Heather snorts.

Actual first line if you're reading the chapters chronologically: It’s late and dark. The window only useful to see my reflection. I’m restless and toss in bed.

Outside Chance:

First line of the text: “And that’s it folks. Katniss Everdeen takes the lead.”

First line of the action because split time formatting: “You wanna explain that garbage?” Haymitch snarls and I squint at the target.

BONUS! Because out of all my fics, this first line actually gets regular comments on it, to include multiple people claiming it's the most memorable opening line of anything I've ever shared with you all. If you've read it, you already know what it is. ;)

CONCLUSION: They're all short (concise?) opening sentences, and with maybe a handful of exceptions, they start with my characters at an extremely low point.

The one where Bea grieves

And maybe, if you want to, I can bring you back a sleeve of crackers.” Bea purses her lips. “Okay.” “Fine, then.” Henry walks away. He sounds like he wants to sound angry, but can’t bring himself to. “Your choice.” “Thanks,” she says, hand pressed to one of the squares etched into the door. “He’s…” Philip says, “trying? We were scared, for a moment.” She nods. “We didn’t know if something had happened to you, Bea. Don’t scare us like that.”

Henry decides he wants Alex, and, as that simply isn’t an option, he opts to rapidly build, and fall back upon, a Victorian fainting couch. Henry runs a science podcast whose truest, most secret mission is to unravel why on earth he’d had the dirty luck to catch feelings for his straight roommate.

3. Sequel to my earlier 9-1-1 fic, which is about Eddie Diaz + comphet!

Eddie remembers Bobby’s homemade pizzas, the way Hen hoards the olives to herself (Chimney, too, come to think of it; he does it for her, giving the mason jar to her first before he sprinkles them over his dinner; they really are best friends) but Buck’s face sours at even the smell of olives, lips pursing, laughing; in fitful bursts, white headlights flash through the windows and Eddie groans, not wanting this cursed light on his face; come on, he looks at the clock; it’s 11:38 and he still hasn’t slept. Before he can bear it, his alarm clock blares in fitful bursts and his slack wrist falls across the bedside dresser, flapping around in search of the off button. Eddie finds it, and the clock falls silent for five… ten… twenty minutes before he’s groaning, eyes set on the red numbers; FUCK!
