When my Uncle John was a young man his friends called him ‘Cricket’ because he was always singing. Which made complete sense because when he walked it was as if he could hear music. He celebrated life every single moment; 527,600 minutes a year. He loved his family with every ounce of his being. He accepted everyone and treated them with compassion & respect. He told great stories & his life was one that the greatest stories are made of. During WWII, he and his family brought food and supplies to the ghettos and hid Jewish children in their apt, helping them escape a Nazi occupied Hungary. A few years later he became a block member in the Hungarian Revolution. As a Hungarian freedom fighter, he fought against communist Russia & later fled Hungary by swimming 200yrds across the Danube River to Austria in the middle of the night. He was a patriot & proud citizen. He arrived in the US on New Years Day 1957. Every time he saw the Statue of Liberty he would cry. He was a romantic. While trying to establish himself a life in the US, found himself in a coffee shop in Bernardsville NJ where he met a waitress. He then quickly learned how to speak English SIMPLY so that he could ask this waitress, my Aunt Vicky, out for a date. When they started dating they both carried around a translation book. He was an avid @nygiants fan & always managed to buy the craziest fan memorabilia. He was my godfather. He was one of my greatest champions. He always reminded me of how special I was... I mean I was ‘his’ goddaughter. He gave me the permission to shine & reminded me how capable & deserving I was when I doubled myself. I will carry him with me always but that still won’t stop me from missing him. I only hope to have gleaned a single ray of his light & to have learned how to live everyday of my life with the same exuberance, kindness, zeal, and gratitude. #TheGodfather #revolutionary #shineon #shineonyoucrazydiamond #howdidigetsolucky #nygiants #nygiantsfan #littlecricket #Groff #johngroff #cricket #danuberiver #mygodfathertherevolutionary #rebelrebel (at Bernardsville, New Jersey) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6C1Eq_JZGjG801kej-S0TA8DwsefK7Re7wkMg0/?igshid=1av47wqmxsuwy

Tomorrow my home town is celebrating an incredible man, an American immigrant, my uncle, godfather, and one of my favorite people on the planet, (uncle) John Grof on his 60th anniversary in America. I am reminded today of the stories he told me as a kid; being shot at while protesting communism and how he felt the heat from a bullet as it skimmed the side of his head; how he crossed a "river" at night with all the belongings he could carry in a single sack, leaving his entire family behind; how he couldn't return home to Hungry to see his family and had to travel to Italy in order to see his mother one last time before her death; how he still cries, 60yrs later, every time he sees the Statue of Liberty. Today I am reminded of everything Uncle John has endured and fought for. I find strength and peace in his unrelenting spirit and humor; his ability to always stay positive and grateful. We are truly a country of immigrants, each family with its own stories of sacrifice and love. I wish we, once again, remember to celebrate each other and honor all those who seek freedom, peace, and refuge in this country. Thank you Uncle John for your heart and inspiration. You have been one of my greatest teachers. #whyimarch #strongertogether #littlecricket #thegodfather #godfather PS Bernardsville people, make your way to the Coffee Shop @2:30 tomorrow to celebrate John Grof Photo credit @emcdell (at Bernardsville, New Jersey)
