News flash, buddy, the entire horror genre is an allegory for abuse. The three supernatural targets of this show are the three kids who were abused. It hasn't all been leading up to Mike telling El he loves her any more than kissing Nancy in season 2 was more important to Jonathan than getting the mind flayer out of Will.

Her abuser begged for her forgiveness and she stood up and left him to die alone. I am so proud of her. I am so, so proud of her. That is a more difficult thing to do than most viewers will (thankfully) ever know. He was horrible to her.

I’m sure others have and will say this but writing a children’s superhero story about how “everyone deserves to be saved” and ending one of the major subplots with a domestic abuse victim becoming the primary caretaker of her abuser, whom she married as a trade off for her family’s financial security, who impacted her mental health to the point she had a breakdown and tried to maim her own child and went to a psychiatric hospital, who likely raped her and/or coerced her into sex in order to produce multiple children until one of them was “suitable” to said abuser, who then agreed to “share responsibility” for their children’s abuse with her even though it was really all him, who literally said he would atone for his sins by stepping away from her life, but ultimately let her become the ONLY PERSON IN THE FAMILY BOUND TO HIM WHILE (most of) THEIR CHILDREN HAVE THE AGENCY TO WALK AWAY….is simply not a defendable writing choice unless you are attached to sexist marriage norms. In the end she never gets to consider what she wants for herself besides navigating her role as a mother and a wife. The way the narrative frames her fulfilling her role as a caring wife there for her injured husband when he has done nothing for her is ridiculous. Everyone deserves to be saved except her, apparently, who is a “Wife” before she is a “person.”
