so lisbon is hosting the world youth day (i think that's what's called in english) which is a meeting of catholic youths from around the world and the pope is going to come too. apparently it's the biggest event ever organized in portugal (there's gonna be almost 4000 international journalists) and things are so chaotic. there are already thousands of "pilgrims" in the country, all over it, but it only starts officially on august 1st. anyway people are absolutely going crazy! and by people i mean whoever is thinking of profiting from it (and you know what good for them but i'm not sure lisbon's supermarkets need to be open 24/7 😭)

Every time I see travelling influencers say “I travel on a budget and only do free tours” baby girl, one: free tour guides are not paid. They rely on tips. If you’ve ever done a free tour and found it weird that they took a picture of the group at the end: that’s because they’re “counting heads” and they’re gonna show it to the boss because most free tour guides HAVE TO PAY A FEE THEMSELVES TO THE BOSS. There’s a company in Lisbon that pays 3€ per person, and another that pays 5€ per person. The photo is so the guide cannot lie because free tours ALWAYS start off with 40 people and end with 20. The photo will let the boss say “there’s 24 people in here, so you owe me 72€”. That’s why they need tips. Even if all those 24 people tip 5€, of the 120€ they’ll put on the guide’s hand, only 52€ is for the guide. Which okay you might be thinking “but in the summer if they keep doing groups of 20-40 that sounds like a deal!” well, 1: not every day you’re going to have groups of 40, not even in June, and expect a huge drop in August, 2: if 40 people sign up for a tour and there’s 5 guides available, you’re getting a small group, and finally, most importantly, 3: not everyone tips. Not even americans. Americans aren’t stupid, they’re fed up of tipping culture, come here and KNOW we don’t have a tipping culture, so they abstain themselves from participating in it. Also it’s tacky as SHIT to pick up a cloth hat and say “our tours survive on tips” like when I saw this I felt embarrassment.
and TWO: you have no idea the wild shit I’ve heard free tour guides say. Rest assured there are good guides out there who do free tours, and many college students studying tourism start out this way. But if it’s an overly confident tour guide. Baby run.

it's so sad how the tourism industry just picks up these beautiful places and replaces any existing economy with one based fully on tourism and then proceeds to hollow out every cultural institution and gentrify every neighborhood and destroy every ounce of nonhuman life (along with every human life based around non-tourist industries) and even physically destroy the basic infrastructure of the city. the fire in hawai'i is genuinely tourism's final form
