If he'd fucking communicated it, I would have explored new treatment options so goddamn fast. But no, he decided to snap his fingers and disappear. In my deepest depression, what I have now was a dream, even though current me is very discontent with it. Most of my dreams, though? No. Do you struggle with depression? I've been diagnosed with severe depression since 7th grade. Are you haunted by your past? A few things won't leave me alone. What medical conditions do you have? Just a lot. I did however have an employee at the ER the first time I went try to pry out of me that my self-mutilation was for attention, and it wasn't until I insisted about a dozen times that it wasn't that he believed me. It's odd looking back that I got REALLY attached to him during that stay, knowing now that it was absolutely horrible and extremely unhelpful for him to do that. I’ve feared this for a while

The news that the new guy behind manga and anime wants to cleanse Japan’s media depresses me.

In my pre-teens, girls were really.. negatively affected, mentally, by the body issues and complexes that said the girls in comics were just sex objects and the boys that liked comics were just being willfully indoctrinated in ‘male gaze’ patriarchy boot camps.

It was the same problem when you read WH40K stuff or played Pokemon in front of clergy in the late 80s/later on, the mid 90s. Your Christian friend might throw a fit about ‘satanic monsters’ or your feminist friend might get on a soap box to hear themselves talk about how enlightened and ‘critical’ they were, or browbeat you into their little fantasy that “having this conversation with somebody” was improving society. Y’know, to give themselves a little ideological dopamine rush.

So you had to be very careful what girl you tried to relate with about liking comic books, or else out would come the accusations that comic books were just jingoistic right wing brainwashing books that objectified women and upheld sexist societal standards. That meant many boys feared sharing their interests or collections for fear of being seen as a Worthless Boy to many girls. Whom were keyed, either willingly or trained by their queen bee friends putting the fear of ostracism in them, to parrot that party line.

But then something amazing happened...

Japanese media hit US shores. And it was cute. It was feminine, often to the point of androgyny and neotony. The depictions of girls were often hyperfeminine and cutesy, often bordering on the infantilized.

BUT. it was in this.. AMAZING cultural and art donut hole! Because the American radfems could speak ad nauseum about old white men being sexist and hateful and misogynist oppressive pieces of shit, cogs in a white supremacist cultural war machine...

But white girls cannot speak over non-white minorities to decry other cultures as sexist, oppressive and wrong. You noticing any parallels with Islam right now, in the hearts of many people that claim they’re “leftists,” and, “progressive,” and therefore cannot be sexist or racist? Oops.

And then oh look, more VISIBLE, FAMOUS femake MANGAKA and more integrated women in DECADES of establishment! Cutesy female-led incorporations of sexy things!! Oh NO!! They’re in that junior radical feminist blindspot; you’re not even supposed to ASK about the hypotheticals of if GIRLS sexualize themselves in media, because, “well girls in media wouldn’t do that, that’s just a disgusting boy thing. :^) So I refuse to even answer that. Until the industry and status quo in comics changes, it’s a boy’s club.”

Well here the Japanese manga community is! Featuring GIRLS, telling SEX JOKES and being scantly clad and SEXY and having FUN and being innocent and joyful! oh look and it’s written and drawn by MINORITY. WOMEN!!!! From one of those oppressed foreign non-white cultures!!! Where women doing stuff professionally is VERY progressive and also an undeniable contribution of women doing anything! Look how puuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuure this is! It’s everything you radfems claim you want! EVEN MINORITY REPRESENTATION!!!

Radical Feminism of the time FUMED at this thing in the periphery being both sexual and EVERYTHING they CLAIMED they wanted from media in order for it to be good, but they bit their tongues. Because all the girls that started to enjoy Sailor Moon, learned about the censorship of Japanese media by foreign companies to market it in the west and how Japan had more mature, ‘pure’ depictions of female nudity and saccharine sweet sexuality, and they were growing deaf and dumb to the radfem’s rhetoric.

And.. I really can’t underline enough. If you’re in your mid-late 30s now, you SAW the visible shift. From when comic books became taboo and the girls got angry about being infantilized, made into sex objects, everything sex related had a negative light that, “boys didn’t respect them for their MIND an SOUL,” and other gripes all evaporated when Sailor Moon’s blonde meatball ass swung in like a Japanese wrecking ball, like a Lisa Frank notebook heroine come to life.

And comics and fiction and the culture became FUN again. No more walking on eggshells, no more avoiding being painted in that disgusting negative light by radfems pretending they cared about equality so much as defining radical feminist largesse as “equality” and selling it to less deep down the rabbithole women as egalitarianism.

And now the very seat of that shining culture is under attack by insiders that are carrying the foreigner mindset. Entire manga studios are being build and founded under Black Lives Matter and Privilege Theorist mindsets. Anime itself is under attack as a social culture by these fucking assholes.

So, 3rd party studios won’t have to add in those disgusting, stupid jokes in Dragon Maid about “the patriarchy,” deviating from the dialogue of the original just to be propagandic platforms. They’ll platform and edit the original material by sympathetic “critical lenses” wearing editors and silver spooned CEOs.

I’m going to be honest. I’m going to be sad to see Japanese media get the same ridiculous standards and sentiments of censorship in the west. A moratorium on blood, mention of death, and any scene with a NIP SLIP will be seen as juvenile, childish, perverted, and objectification of the female body. Bugger the fact you can have all these things and it’s perfectly healthy, but no, “we MUST ENSURE OUR SOCIETY IS FREE OF BAD THINK! MEDIA IS SOCIETY’S PSYCHOLOGY! PSYCHOLOGY MUST BE PURE OF BAD THINK, ELSE SOCIETY’S SIGNING OFF ON THIS BEHAVIOR!” Bullshit.

We all remember growing up with anime and manga in an era when everything even hinting at sexuality and violence was behind a few layers of bubblewrap and judgemental eyes. Everything more mature than Carebears highlighted and stigmatized so overbearing parents could tell if it had anything their little Johnny or Sarah shouldn’t even have agency over knowing, as long as the parents could have it. It was a cultural and mental refuge. It was where you could have your nip slips and innocent sexuality without judgement or accusations of being a disgusting person.

And more importantly it changed a lot of girls opinions or prevented them from swallowing that party line and going deeper down that rabbithole altogether.

Imported Japanese media returned a sense of both youthful innocence as well as tolerant maturity to western expectations of art and illustrated literature and I argue bridged that gap between the dark and gritty for-adults 90s stuff parents wouldn’t let kids even know existed, and.. fucking Carebears.

We still have webcomics for anything-goes, anyone-can-access, but that will come under threat next. Just you watch. Demanding anything with a nipple or even a mention of sexuality must be behind a government watched paywall so you can’t even access it without committing theft or fraud that the government can punish a person or their guardian over.

I really, really, really do not want the Japanese to experience the sort of horrible social climate that I remember looming when radical feminism sold itself to the girls as progressive, and made men depicting women inherently oppressive and evil. Where it sustains itself on the hysteria and personal emotional insecurities and complexes of millions of women normalizing that into a societal expectation that they then fear being judged by.

It was truly an absolutely miserable period of time to grow up as a comic fan and as a person, because the stigma was biting. And the contrast between the warm, open, free, inviting and friendly waters afterwards?.. Like going from swimming in cold arctic lemon juice to tranquil tropical seawater.

The existence of Japanese manga and what it did to the social climate of comic and cartoons fans cannot be understated enough.

I mean, yeah, at the time, folks like Joss Whedon helped with Buffy and shit, but we don’t talk about him and people like him. It was the 90s.

If you could volunteer for any charity, which one would you choose? Do you think it’s more important to help humans, or are animal and environmental charities equally important?  I don’t think acts of charity should be compared. Personally though, I tend to lean towards causes for animals.

Do you prefer holidays where you relax, or actually do things? My family alwaysssssss makes sure our itineraries are absolutely packed when we go on vacations. Seems like a waste of money to travel to a new place just to stay holed up in our hotel room.

Do you feel safe in your country?  In a country where the president is a blatant liar, misogynist, has anger and cursing issues, and enables extrajudicial killings? Safety is a dream here.

Do you feel safe where you live?  Very technically speaking, yeah I do since it’s a gated village so nothing ever happens here.

Have you been falsely diagnosed with something by a bad doctor?  Not necessarily misdiagnosed, but I’m pretty sure I was prescribed the wrong set of medicines for my UTI last year...nothing came out of taking those pills and I felt just as sick (and dead) as I was after a couple of days. The only reason I got better was Angels’s mom is a doctor and gave me the right meds to take, which worked on me within a couple of hours.

What animal have you always wanted as a pet but couldn’t have?  We weren’t allowed to have dogs as kids because we “wouldn’t be able to take care of them” – which they were right about, anyway. But we have two now, so it all worked out in the end.

Have you ever thrown up from cramps?  No. Fortunately my period cramps have never been that bad, and the only time they can be a headache is if they’re the leg crampjp that sends me waking up in the middle of the night.

List three people you had a hard time forgiving.  I don’t really forgive. If someone fucks up badly enough that I feel the need to cut them off, that’s pretty much it for me.

Who is the most spiritual person you know?  I don’t know.

Would you ever start a vlog?  Sure. I’ve always wanted to try it, but I don’t have a decent vlogging camera and am not invested enough in the venture to spend on one. In general I’m also not comfortable being in front of the camera, as I’ve already shared several times here. Vlogging does look fun though, and I definitely would’ve already given it a shot if only I felt more comfortable.

Are your dreams coming true yet?  Some of the short-term ones, sure.

Do you struggle with depression?  I go through phases of it, but I’ve never been formally diagnosed just because I’ve never booked a trip to the psychiatrist.

Are you haunted by your past?  No

What medical conditions do you have?  Do scoliosis and lactose intolerance count? Those are the main issues I have.

Do you use a Magic Bullet?  Why did I think this was a vibrator...? Anyway, I looked it up and no, I’ve never used one.

What does your apron look like?  I’ve never had to use one regularly.

What are your favorite spicy foods?  Curry, tteokbokki, ramen, samgyeopsal with ssamjang, spicy fried chicken.

Which do you like better: being an adult or being a kid?  Being an adult has a lot more freedom to it even though I have to go through heavier and deeper shit, so it’s still more worth it to me.

Were you excited to be a teenager on your thirteenth birthday?  I was heavily depressed back then, and was for a while, so I didn’t have any feelings about turning 13. I don’t even remember my birthdays up until the 15th.

Did you feel insecure in high school?  In the first half, yeah. But I started opening up more and gaining friends by junior year, so at that point I wasn’t feeling too shy anymore.

Would you ever be friends with someone who was suicidal?  I hate this question that I am simply ignoring it.

Who was the biggest bully in high school?  My school didn’t tolerate bullies so no one ever dared to be one, in the grand scheme of things. But back in kindergarten Kaira used to love targeting me - she was my big bully before she became my friend, lol.

What was your favorite class in high school? History, of course. I personally didn’t like literature but I enjoyed English classes, just because it was easy and was a guaranteed A+ in my report card.

Would you rather have a daughter or a son?  Daughter.

Do you think babies are cute? For the most part yes, the only exception being if I have to be exposed with a baby/toddler that is prone to screech-crying. My patience is an extremely thin line when it comes to children like that lol and I FEEL BAD for feeling like so... but I just can’t deal with harsh sounds like that one.

Do you dream about the future a lot?  I guess I daydream sometimes but it’s nothing obsessive.

Do you think about your past a lot?  I’ll daydream or feel resentful sometimes, depending on what or who I’m thinking about lol. But I don’t stay in the past for too long.

A bit guilty because I had Starbucks delivered when I had already spent a lot this week, but I keep telling myself I deserve it after working all week haha. So cute I want to throw up: a few alternatives to romantic comedies this coming Valentines.

Many mainstream romantic comedies have always been, in my modest opinion, the cinematic equivalent of candy floss: delicious but completely nutritionally void, and in their total sweetness, may cause intense existential nausea. Of course, I’ll grant that there are a few heartwarming exceptions, namely Ten Things About You, starring the ever-handsome Heath Ledger. However, these classics tend to be seen and experienced through the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia, and often this tends to be the only thing really that they have to go for them. They often don’t age so well, since their main theme, the romantic relationships between men and women, is something that is, in the ever-changing, fevered landscape of gender politics, tends to fall short when being viewed by a generation which has loudly proclaimed that traditional gender roles should be nothing more than an option in weird and wonderful menu of choices.  Anyone who perhaps takes a gander at Love Actually might notice the creepiness underlying some of the main plots. In more obnoxious terms, across the pond in America, the majority of romantic comedies tend to run on the underlying principle that, according to Hollywood, there is no greater ambition no more all-encompassing life event for a woman than marriage. Films such as 27 Dresses, The Proposal, and even the otherwise heartwarming and genuinely whimsical Bridesmaids are all offenders of this tired trope. So, Valentine’s Day is upon us the epitome of the candyfloss mentality and I say: hell no. We can do better than this. 

Disclaimer: I’m a hetero, cis. gal, and feel that it would be best since my romantic experiences involve mostly jumping on hetero, cis. boys, to cover films that are, albeit unconventional, about men and women. I can run my mouth about this stuff, and I wouldn’t want to spout my cis, hetero opinion about films that have LGBT+ relationships, which I myself, have never had any personal experience of. 

1. The Only Lover’s Left Alive (2014)

I first saw this film at the Picturehouse in Manchester, where was being screened, topically, on Valentine's day. 

 The story follows two ancient vampires: the slightly depressive Adam (Tom Hiddleston) and the quietly jubilant Eve (Tilda Swindon), who have been married for millennia. 

The whole tone of the film is a brooding and meandering, filmed exclusively at night, lit in cold blues and warm yellows, and scored with clangy wailing distorted electric guitars.

Eve and Adam’s relationship is one rarely depicted in cinema. Immortality aside, they present a harmonious long-term relationship, where each party has found things like their love of art science to sustain the joy and intimacy of the many years of being toghether. Yet the passion is not gone. Eve comes to Adams’s rescue in his moments of existential crisis and she is greeted by Adam like she’s salvation incarnate. The joke, dance and laugh toghether, yet at be beginning of the film they live apart, though that doesn’t seem like much of an issue for either of them. There is a true sense that the parameters of their relationship have been comfortably set, over many centuries, to a pristine level of satisfaction. One thing which is particularly interesting between the two vampire lovers is the seeming absence of lust, a refreshing change in a society that bombards us with hypersexualised messages. It’s true that in the film they are often seen sleeping nude next to each other, but this I think server to reinforce the genuine familiarity and intimacy between them. After all, lust and infatuation can only last so long, and when you’re immortal the honeymoon period can feel much shorter than for us mortal “zombies” as Adam calls us. I think this film shows what love can beyond the fleeting moment of “falling in love” which romantic comedies can’t seem to look beyond.

2. Clerks (1994)

On the face of things, Kevin Smith’s debut is nothing more than an offbeat comedy about slackers, and about the main character’s Dante (Brian O’Halloran) identity crisis. However, Kevin Smith masterfully gives us a cautionary tale of the unrealistic expectations we place on ourselves when it comes to love. Dante has a loving, doting girlfriend Veronica (Marilyn Ghilgotti) who showers him with attention and affection and who Dante resolutely takes for granted, choosing instead to peruse his old flame the outgoing and sexually exciting Catlin (Lisa Spoonauer). He’s bitter, sexually insecure (one of the funniest sequences in the film is Dante losing his mind once he finds out how many men his girlfriend had fellated) and manages to encompass the consequences every ridiculous and toxic notion we have adsorbed about pride and relationships. Although Dante is an adult, I would describe the level of maturity shown in his romantic escapades to be equivalent of a teenager, all impulsivity, lust and dumb decisions. Thankfully Kevin Smith allows Dante to develop, so things end with him realising his mistakes. There’s a universality to the journey ark of this character because as a collective we’ve all been stupid insecure teenagers terrified by ourselves and love and generally inhibited with hormones. The key message of the films is this: there is hope! The hormones settle and we eventually pull our heads out of our asses. 

  3. I Don’t Feel at Home in this World Anymore (2017)

This oddball comedy is about depressed woman Ruth ( Melanie Lynskey) whose house is burgled, leading her to go on a reckless mission to retrieve her belongings, with the help of her neurotic neighbour Tony (Elijah Wood). Their relationship blossoms as their shared mission bring them toghether. Where classic romantic comedies bring people toghether on pretences not much more complex than physical appearance and circumstantial tomfoolery, here we see two people come toghether as equals and comrades.

4. Byzantium (2012)

One of the most underrated British films of the decade and my absolute favourite film of all time, Byzantium, is a feminist masterpiece. Vampire mother Clara (Gemma Atherton) and her teenage (sort of) daughter Elenor (Saoirse Ronan) lives as fugitives from an exclusively male secret society from which Clara stole the secret of vampirism for herself and her daughter. Besides the film being astoundingly visually beautiful and completely original, it contains one of the tenderest love stories between Elenor and her ailing neighbour Frank, with who, against her better nature she falls in love with. In contrast to Clerks, this young love is of the best possible kind, both showing fortitude and dignity more than many of the adults around them.

For most of my life, I’ve identified as male (cis male, but for most of my life, I didn’t know about the distinction. More on this later.) This past year, I’ve begun to identify as genderfluid, and I’m confident enough in the label to start using it here. (He or she pronouns. I’m not really comfortable with They, I don’t mind using it for people who prefer it, but to me, it feels othering.) I was very feminine as a little kid. I had a favorite baby doll, My Little Pony toys (back before, you know, boys did that anyway), and Lisa Frank school supplies. I had more in common with Lisa than with Bart, I liked the pink ranger best, Velma was the best member of the Scooby gang. I wore my hair long, like, crazy long, longer than any of the girls.

My parents didn’t do anything to discourage this, but other people did. I felt like a weirdo at school. At some point, I just started repressing. No one made me do it, I just decided it was safer, I guess. And I repressed it so completely, so successfully, that I actually forgot that I used to be like that. As a teenager, I had a lot of self-esteem issues, but I didn’t connect them to the kid I used to be. I was, to all outward and inward appearances, a boy. As an adult, I developed a kind of depression- a crushing despair I didn’t know the source of, a sense of futility so pervasive that I couldn’t even bear to ask for help. And it would last for a few hours or a few days, and then, it was gone. I felt like such a different person when I wasn’t depressed, that I would think I was cured. The two mindsets were so different they couldn’t see each other. This went on for years, on about a weekly basis. I didn’t feel comfortable seeking professional help because I thought it would be too expensive, and because I always felt either fine or too broken to try.

Then one of my best and oldest friends came out to me as trans. When my “sister” and I started calling her by her new name and pronouns, my “sister” realized he wanted to change names and pronouns, too. He was trans, and once we realized that, it was blindingly obvious that he had always been trans. He’s way more a dude than I am. Once that happened, once I was okay calling them by their preferred names, I started to remember my childhood. I started to remember the girl I wanted to be when I was little. And when my mood would shift, I would notice the shift. And I would allow myself to think of me as a girl. And it- worked. I learned to like feeling girly, learned to see that person as me. The worst of my depression, the part that made me want to die, the part that I couldn’t see the source of, it disappeared. I still get real sad sometimes, but I get sad for reasons that I can recognize and try to work through, not because it’s Hate Life Day.

But there’s a lot I still like about being a man. I don’t think I’m the same as my trans friend. I still like my birthname, and facial hair, and being able to sing really deep. That part of me, even though it feels incredibly distinct from the girl me, is still me, and I like both. I don’t want to pick one. It can get confusing, because if I’m female too long I start thinking about trying to dress like a woman or wear makeup or even transition- then I look in the mirror and go, oh, no, that doesn’t feel great. I’m not comfortable presenting as a woman yet, and I’m not sure when/if I will be. On the other hand, if I’m male for a long time, I start to think I’m faking it- I’m not queer at all, I just don’t care for gender norms. It took me a lot longer to come to terms with my new label than my brother, because for him, it’s simple. He’s a boy, he’s always been a boy, he’s always gonna be a boy. For me, it’s tricky, because I have to remember that however I feel at the moment, it’s not all of how I feel, and I have to be responsible to my whole self, not just part. I can’t help but wonder if I would have wound up trans if I hadn’t repressed myself growing up, and so maybe that’s what I really should be. But, I don’t feel less like me when I’m masculine, I don’t feel like it’s a facade. They are both me, and that’s what I’m learning to live with.

Our parents never actively hid queerness from us, but the fact was we lived in a rural, southern US town. No one talks about it. It’s a good way to get beaten up or harassed by bible-thumpers, or both, or worse. We didn’t know what trans-ness or queerness looked like because it wasn’t present in our lives in any visible capacity. I only really learned the terms- cis, trans, nonbinary, genderfluid, etc.- once I started spending way too much time on Tumblr. And even then, I didn’t really understand them. Knowing the definition and knowing what queer people are actually like is very different. My life experience was still too isolated. Even now, I’m not totally confident in the label of genderfluid- because I don’t really know what other genderfluid people are like. I only have my own experience to go off of, and the fact that it feels more right than any other label I can think of.

And that’s kinda why I want to be open about it. If we had known about queerness growing up, it wouldn’t have taken my brother and me so long to figure these things out. I could have avoided a lot of pain, simply by seeing someone out there, in media or IRL, and going, oh, it me.

Some of these things were confusing to me, too. Like, why do I have to wear my muscles out keeping my thighs together at church? (i mostly didn't cause lol who gives a fuck). Why did my mom's friend care about it when I was with her, but not my mom? Teenage Gender Identity Crisis

Human biology is pretty clear, that at birth we are either born a female (XX) or a male (XY). There are two distinct sexes. That being said, there are a growing number of adolescents who are struggling with what is known as a teenage gender identity crisis, or gender dysphoria. Gender dysphoria refers to the disconnect between the sex the individual is born with and the gender they identify with psychologically.

When the teen is torn between their biological sex and the gender they desire to be it can cause significant emotional distress. The teen may begin to dress and acquire mannerisms that align with the gender identity of choice, which can result in bullying, ridicule, and social shaming. This only exacerbates their self-image challenges and can trigger a mental health condition.

Gender dysphoria can first arise in childhood, when, for example a little boy prefers to play with girls and toys intended for girls, and may even want to wear girl’s clothing. Childhood gender dysphoria, however, tends to resolve by late adolescence with 98% of boys accepting their biologically determined sex and 88% of girls doing so, states the American College of Pediatricians in a 2017 press release. There is much controversy surrounding the practice of doctors assisting a pre-pubescent child with gender dysphoria to delay puberty or to influence sex traits medically.

A teenage gender identity crisis becomes disordered when he or she experiences major distress or impairment due to a disconnect between the assigned sex and gender identity. According to the DSM-5, gender dysphoria is defined as follows:

Gender Dysphoria: A marked incongruence between one’s experience/expressed gender and assigned gender, of at least a six months duration, and is associated with clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

A marked incongruence between one’s experienced/expressed gender and primary and/or secondary sex characteristics (or anticipated secondary sex characteristics)

A strong desire to be rid of one’s primary and/or secondary sex characteristics, or to prevent the development of the secondary sex characteristics

A strong desire for the primary and/or secondary sex characteristics of the other gender

A strong desire to be of the other gender

A strong desire to be treated as the other gender

A strong conviction that one has the typical feelings and reactions of the other gender

The DSM 5 also changed the diagnosis from “gender identity disorder” in the DSM-4 to gender dysphoria.

The mental health community has seen a significant increase sudden-onset gender dysphoria in adolescents who had not displayed any signs of gender dysphoria during childhood. The majority of these cases are female-at-birth individuals. A researcher from Brown University, assistant professor of behavioral and social sciences, Lisa Littman, conducted a survey of 250 parents of such teens. Interestingly, 80% of the parents who responded to the survey had not seen any of the symptoms of gender dysphoria when their teen was a child. In addition, a fifth of the respondents noted that their teen had some friends recently come out as “transgender” at about the same time as they teen began questioning their biological sex assignment. Some question whether clusters of teens with gender dysphoria are being influenced through group dynamics or social media.

Comorbid Mental Health Disorders

A teen with gender dysphoria is more likely to develop a mental health disorder than the general population. According to a meta-study conducted in 2016 reviewed 38 studies that centered around gender dysphoria and levels of psychiatric comorbidity. The analysis concluded that individuals struggling with gender dysphoria have a higher incidence of psychiatric problems, although the rate decreases after they have gender-confirming treatment.

The most common mental health disorders that co-occur with gender dysphoria are depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders:

Depression. The rate of depression among transgender youths is approximately 50%, compared with 7% in the general population. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, gay, lesbian, or bisexual teens are nearly 5 times more likely to attempt suicide as their heterosexual peers.

Anxiety. Anxiety symptoms may arise in teens with gender dysphoria, as the teen faces social distress due to the teenage gender identity crisis. They may become so anxious about going to school or social functions that they begin to isolate and withdraw from peers. In addition, the teen may begin to engage in self-harming behaviors.

Substance abuse. Teens with gender dysphoria may utilize alcohol or drugs to help ease the resulting emotional disturbance. Self-medicating with substances can result in a co-occurring substance use disorder.

Signs of Teenage Gender Identity Crisis

Parents may notice their teen exhibiting certain signs and symptoms that indicate a problem with gender identity. Parents may initially be unprepared for the onset of this condition and attempt to persuade the adolescent to discontinue the behaviors associated with their perceived gender. These behaviors might include:

Wearing clothing normally associated with the opposite sex. Males using make-up.

Attempting to hide secondary sexual characteristics, such as girls wrapping their breasts or males removing their body hair

Showing disgust toward their genitalia

Affecting mannerisms and speech that match their gender identity

Asking parents and siblings to use the pronoun of the opposite sex when addressing them

Using a new name

Urinating in the method of the opposite sex

Persistent insistence that they were born the wrong sex

Teens with gender dysphoria may skip school or stop participating in their usual extracurricular sports or activities. They may show signs of low self-esteem or suicidal ideation.

Suicidality Among Individuals with Gender Dysphoria

There is a marked risk of suicidal behavior among teens with gender dysphoria. According to an article published by Reuters Health, transgender teens have a significantly higher risk of suicidal behavior. The article cites a study out of the University of Arizona, Tuscon that reported the following statistics:

Approximately 50% of teens that were born female but identify as male have attempted suicide at least once.

30% of teens born male but identify as female have attempted suicide at least once.

28% of teens questioning their gender identity have attempted suicide at least once.

The risk factors for suicide among teens with gender dysphoria include:

Family rejection

Being discriminated against

Being bullied or harassed

Feeling they do not fit in

Feeling they are a burden to their family

Parents of trans teens should become educated about the warning signs for suicide. These red flags include:

Changes in eating habits

Changes in sleeping habits

Withdrawing from friends and family

Agitation, restlessness

Decline in academic performance

Giving their prized possessions away

Mood swings

Unusual violent or rebellious behavior

Truancy

Talking about wanting to die

How to Support Your Teen with Gender Dysphoria

Teens who are struggling with gender identity issues need, above all else, to feel that their family accepts them and supports them. Family acceptance and love is the number one protective factor for reducing the risk of suicide. When the overt signs of gender confusion emerge, it is best to have a frank and open conversation with the teen, while withholding all judgment.

Parents can assist their teen during this tumultuous time by becoming educated about the condition, as well as possible treatment measures. Parents should not rush into any gender reassignment treatments or surgeries, as the condition may resolve in time.  Gender transitioning regret is real. What do you want to name your first child? Olivia if it’s a girl, Luis if it’s a boy. Either way Gab and I were planning on naming kid/s after her parents.

Would you ever name a child after yourself? No, coming up with nothing other than Robyn seems incredibly lazy.

Is there a guy or girl you wish things had worked out with? No.

What makes you nauseous? Certain car smells and my uncle’s driving.

What are your favorite spicy foods? Anything Indian, Korean, or Thai. I like spicy when it’s a part of the food. But when something is just peppered in artificial spicy powder, the spiciness doesn’t feel as... ~meaningful, if that makes any sense. When it’s spicy only for the sake of being spicy, I don’t like it.

Which do you like better: being an adult or being a kid? I like being an adult because my experience as a kid was terrible and certainly not something I want to go back to.

Were you excited to be a teenager on your thirteenth birthday? Yeah I was. I was even ecstatic that my mom made an entire Facebook album of me for my thirteenth birthday with photos from when I was a baby up until I was 12, since I was so excited to see my own evolution growing up lmao. Naivety and conceitedness at its finest.

Did you feel insecure in high school? Not really, I mostly didn’t give a shit in high school lol.

Do you think there are different types of depression? I don’t just think them, there are different kinds.

Would you ever be friends with someone who was suicidal? I’m the suicidal friend hahaha. I would but I’m gonna have to tread the friendship carefully since I get triggered fairly quickly. Who was the biggest bully in high school? There wasn’t a bully in high school. People got over that by like 4th grade, at least in the school I grew up in. High school’s just more of a race for popularity at that point.

Do you celebrate Christmas? My family does but I prefer to lock myself up in my room. My seasonal depression hits during Christmas and it’s become something I absolutely dread more and more each year.

Do you celebrate Halloween? I definitely take it way more seriously than Christmas.

Do you believe all Christians are evil and hypocritical, or only some? Most of them are. Thank god I dodged that bullet earlier on.

Do you think it’s bullying to tell someone they’re naive? No, it’s just telling them how it is.

Did you get bullied more as a child, a teenager, or an adult? Child. People teased me mercilessly for my name which to them sounded really boyish. I ended up hating my name for a time, and myself forever.

Have you ever broken out in hives? No...I’m not sure what this means.

Have you ever had a doctor not believe what you told him? Yeah the doctors in my university are fucking losers. I went there to get my physical exam before I was able to enroll, they were super mean, and I haven’t gone back since.

If you’re female, would you feel uncomfortable having a male gynecologist? Uh not sure about the culture of that place but I don’t think I’d feel awkward haha. They’re there for the job.

Were you ever hospitalized as a child? Just once. I was a month old and if I remember correctly, I had a severe case of diarrhea/lactose intolerance. I would poop out instantly the milk I would drink, and my stomach got so deflated that if you pressed on it, it wouldn’t go back to its normal shape.

I’m really happy I took this step forward and chose to take care of myself, because otherwise I’d normally try to kill myself as soon as I find myself in a slump.
