I hope this isn't too weird of a message to send, but doesn't it seem like Jonawagon doujinshi are pretty uncommon? I've only seen maybe 3 posted online & I have a copy of a SpeedJona doujin but aside from those I haven't come across any. Is it like a rare pairing or something? I thought they were fairly popular
It isn’t weird at all, anon! All the opposite actually, cause I love getting asks even if i'm not always around or it sometimes takes me a hot minute to get to them gfjhkjh
This is gonna be long and probs gonna have bits that might sound rant-ish to some, but I hope that’s alright! :'D
For starters, sadly, jonawagon/jonaspeed/speedjona or however you call the ship is quite an underrated ship. This has to do partly with the wrong perceptions some folks have built around it and around the characters as well (that them both and the couple itself are the epitome of "purity" and "innocence", sometimes even labelling them as "boring" as a result even though both characters are far from that, that "it could only be a one-sided thing" on Spw's end despite both showing and sharing a certain bond/closeness towards each other -closeness that sometimes Jonathan didn't show towards anyone else-, etc), partly because of the many timeskips in PB and all the scenes the anime cut out and people wrongly assuming that the main events happened in the span of a few days and thus people dropping the ball on the ship/characters when Jonathan and Speedwagon actually knew each other for as long -sometimes even longer- than other more popular characters/ships in jjba did, partly because neither Jonathan or Speedwagon are as popular as other characters in the franchise as a whole, and also partly because, as sad as it is to say this, the ship lacks a LOT of support, especially from it's own fanbase. While jonawagon is a popular and well liked ship overall (in the sense that even general fans who don't care much about shipping, or those who are still on the fence about mlm ships, or those who just don't actively ship jonawagon actually like and support the ship or the idea of it upon seeing the actual dynamics between the characters and their potential and the fact that the ship can actually coexist with jonaeri without altering the characters/making them ooc, nor altering the story and so on), it still lacks a lot of support from it's fans. I often see most other ships/characters get lots of reblogs and exposure from their fans on literally any and all platforms, helping those ships/characters reach new audiences and gaining more popularity and drawing interest from potential new fans, while jonawagon stuff as well as solo Jonathan or Speedwagon stuff usually only get likes and a few reblogs at most from their fans, which is nice and all, but it doesn't give the artists/writers any exposure nor get those works or the ship any farther than that and just keeps them within part of the already existing fanbase at best, which often times makes the artists/content creators lose interest in continuing to create stuff for the ship/characters. This is also why I always strongly ask -almost beg at this point ngl- for people to support the artists/writers/etc via reblogs!! The ship having a bunch of different names also might have an impact on all of this, as it's not always as 'easy' to tag/find contents if you don't know how to tag/search for it. Jonawagon (normally used in the western parts of the fandom), JonaSpeed/SpeedJona (Western version of the ship's most popular names in Japanese: ジョナスピ/スピジョナ or JonaSupi/SupiJona respectively], SpeedStar (a name that became a bit more popular more recently after a mini jonawagon event in 2019), being the most common ones afaik, asides from the standard JonathanxSpeedwagon/SpeedwagonxJonathan ie and others. In short, Jonathan and Speedwagon as well as jonawagon are quite well liked and even popular to an extent, but they lack a massive amount of support from the fans, which also usually translates into artists and content creators for this ship losing interest in continuing to create new material for it and thus end up not making any more contents.
In regards to doujinshi more specifically, I’m a bit disconnected when it comes to Jojo doujinshi in general, but it seems to be a bit like that for most of the non "crazy popular" Jojo ships if you ask me, which is kinda normal considering the massive amount of characters in the whole series. Putting my experience as example, if it helps, I used to collect doujinshi from one of my previous fandoms, which had a shit ton of them for plenty of it’s ships and it was somewhat easy to acquire hard copies of despite it being an “old anime” basically while most Jojo doujinshi (especially anything that is not parts 3, 4 and 5) seems to be a bit hard to come across regardless of the ship(s) in them, even in auction sites or places like pixiv that sell digital copies if the author puts them up on sale, which is understandable since the aforementioned parts are some of the most popular parts in Japan, where most doujinshi is created, and thus take most of the fandom's interest -authors’ and readers’ alike-, as well as the hype for parts like Phantom Blood being long dead (with it being dead/dormant since the original airing of the anime ended in 2013, and it coming back ocassionally whenever there's a 'special' re-airing of PB in Japan or when events such as the Joestar Radio take place), so maybe my parameters on the whole subject are somewhat disproportionate?
This is also gonna sound all boomer-like, but I’ve also noticed, or it seems to me at least (still in comparison to the doujinshi from my previous fandom), that doujinshi books as we knew them aren’t /as/ common nowadays as they used to be a while back. Even the works themselves don’t seem to be much that way either. For example, doujinshi anthologies used to be a big thing a while back and, while they still exist, they don’t seem to be too common anymore (these worked as "promo books" of sorts for all the artists featured and they also helped lesser known/popular artists and ships to get some exposure to newer audiences). Nowadays such thing still exists, and I actually recall seeing a Jonaspeed/Speedjona anthology being made “recently” (recently as in 2019, if I’m not mistaken? it was published and sold during the mini Jonaspeed event they held at a Jojo con in Japan that year), but they aren’t nearly as common as they used to be, since now most artists can post any samples they want (much more reduced tho, cause you normally get a few pages instead of a full mini story) in places like Twitter or Pixiv. And it’s kinda the same with regular doujinshi. Before, most doujinkas had to publish a book in order to get their stuff out and get some exposure, so they were always working on new stories and making new books to sell and promoing their stuff, sometimes one after the other and even creating multi-volume stories in some cases. Now, thanks to how "easy" it is to get some exposure on social media, it’s much more common to see doujinkas for any ships/characters making short stories (1-4 pages, sometimes more) or just 1 page illustrations instead and posting them on their social media every now and then as a promo for their works. They also still make and sell their books (a few jonawagon artists on twitter do, at least), and these short stories/illustrations serve to boost their works instead, which is not a complain at all cause I think it's amazing tbqh! But this also translates into less stories/doujinshi being created as many of these artists often opt for leaving those stories that years ago would have been their own book or a mini story in a book as a prompt or a short story only.
As for actual jonawagon doujinshi, while it is not as common as say pt 3 doujinshi, there is quite a bunch of it. Some date from 2012-2013 (when the PB anime was originally aired), some are much older than that and some others are much more recent (as there are still some active jonawagon doujinkas around). There are also "fanfic books" that are also considered doujinshi and that seem to be a thing sometimes, but these contain little to no art at all and are usually written 100% in Japanese. The problem here is that not many of them have been scanlated/translated yet, sometimes because they aren't easy to find on sale online, sometimes because re-sellers who do have them set high prices for them plus shipping costs, sometimes because the artists/online shops won't sell stuff overseas, sometimes because those who do own doujinshi copies don't always know how to properly share them (since scanning a doujinshi in high or decent quality without destroying the book can be hard af) among other reasons.
All that said, there is a bunch of jonawagon doujinshi that has been scanned and is available online! but it can be tricky to get sometimes due to the different names this ship can go by and because of the "translations" of said names into different languages (as some doujinshi can only be found in Chinese sites, or Russian ones, and so on for example, so it can take some serious time to figure that out and have a successful search).
In all honesty, anon, I'm a dumdum and I had never thought about doing so in a more public manner until now, since I've already shared my entire jonawagon collection (pics, doujins, etc) with friends who have requested it more privately, but I can upload the doujins I have scans of if anyone's interested?? (I’d post the links where I found most of them but since my hd is pretty much dead and I can’t access Windows or my windows/mozilla profile, I’ve p much lost all my old bookmarks). They were only like... 8 last time I checked (9/10 if you count the Japanese and English versions of the "Joestarsaaaaan" one), but it's something :D Just be aware that some of them are nsfw! and that a couple are either part of a book that has stories from other ships in them (I only have the jonawagon parts tho) or contain other ships implied or openly shown in the jonawagon story.
I also have about 4 more, but the scanlator of one of them openly requested for the file to not be reuploaded, so Idk if it'd be alright to share it? (and they also deactivated their blog, so there's no way to ask them for permission). The other 3 are scans a friend sent to me of their own doujinshi copies, so I also don't know if it would be okay for me to post them?? (i haven't seen this friend in over a year so idk gfhgjkjlkĂą). 2 of those 3 are nsfw.

Jun, do you think you could walk us through how you buy your doujins? I've been wanting to buy some kros doujins FOREVER, and I know there are multiple tutorials/advice online but I want to get advice from someone who's actually gotten their doujins successfully shipped to them! Is there a website you recommend using, or a tutorial online that you follow? Would appreciate it greatly ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ
How I order doujinshis online?I’m always happy to help a fellow karaoso enthusiast! I hope you have basic knowledge of Japanese so you can navigate easily. Otherwise chrome automatically translating the site works too I guess.
This post may end up pretty lengthy since I babble a lot. So continue ahead only if you want to.
Many sites don’t do international shipping so you will need to find yourself a proxy service or a freight forwarding site. Freight forwarding is the cheaper option of the two. Tenso is a fan favourite it seems but I use TensoJapan cause the fees are cheaper. You’ll need to provide your ID verification to use either of their services though. As for proxy services. I’ll mention some later below. It seems TensoJapan also provides this service now. ^^
The sites I use varies. If possible I like to support the artist and use the link they provide in their pixiv post for that particular work. (Usually toranoana) However if it’s quite old, chances are that it’s already sold out.
Toranoana A great site to buy new doujinshis. It’s far the easiest site to navigate and has the best range in terms of new books. Most of the products also have the synopsis and a few sample pages as well! The go to place to really support the artist! This post explains really well on how to shop there! Really use that auto translation on chrome to your advantage if you need to! If you are soley looking for KaraOso djs, here has all the instock books for that pair. And here is the full list, although most are out of stock lmao. (good reference when you want to buy second hand books though!)
If you plan to use a freight forwarding service, you need to create a Toranoana account yourself. When you write in the detail, make sure to input the Japanese address that you were given for shipping details. For when Toranoana charges you for your order, it’s quite funny cause they charge you then return the money straight away (I guess it’s to check if your card works) and when your order is ready to be sent, they’ll take the payment properly. They don’t accept PayPal as payment though. So if you don’t have a credit card, you’ll have to use a proxy service instead.
For proxy service, try using the one toranoana is advertising at the moment, AOCS. AOCS creates a toranoana account for you when you register with them and also you don’t need to provide them your ID for verification! At checkout you just need to select the acos option for delivery! from here, AOCS will pay for your goods on delivery and send you an invoice. They accept PayPal as payment. Once that’s all paid up, they will send you your goods. :)I’ve tried it and yes, it’s very simple to use and convenient but the shipping is a lil pricey since they only send by EMS. Fast shipping though!
Pros:
Easy navigation. They have tags for coupling names and filters to narrow down your search.
Free domestic shipping if you spend over ÂĽ9720.
Toranoana is fast with processing your order and getting it to your freight forwarder/proxy service.
Cons:
Once it’s out of stock, it’s gone. You can apply for a re-sell or set an notification alarm if it ever restocks.
A bit pricey because you pay for tax.
They may cancel your order if they notice you are using a proxy. I don’t know if they still do, it’s just what I’ve heard over the years. For sure tenso and tensojapan are in the green though!
Ok, so you really want a particular work by a certain circle, or just their works in general but it’s out of print…Usually this is the case for me when I see all those out of print djs on Toranoana…You can try your luck in 2nd hand stores! Or even Yahoo auctions.
Yahoo auctions would be the last place I’d go for, cause ordering from there can kill your wallet. Especially if you buy from different sellers. You’ll have to pay for domestic shipping on each of the auctions. There are proxy services designed for Yahoo auctions, but the one I have tried is DeJapan. Their service is good and their processing and shipping is fast too! My order came 3-4 days after it was sent! They only send by EMS though. Quite pricey but reliable. if you are still interested in purchasing osmt djs from yahoo auctions, try ‘おそ松さん 同人’ in the search bar.
MandarakeSells second hand goods. I like this site a lot! They do international shipping with several options too. So you can skip the whole middle-man business and having the option to choose for the slower, but cheaper postage. The search bar isn’t as friendly but if you know what you are after, or the circle you are interested in, then it’s a lot easier to navigate. Just be aware mandarake has different stores so if you end up getting anything from this site, make sure to check which store it’s in! Try getting all your items from the same store, otherwise you’ll be paying a lot for shipping!! When I make orders I like to at least group 5 djs from each store if I can’t get it all from the same store. But I LOVE their quality!! Their second hand stuff look pretty much brand new! Unless stated otherwise in their listing. I’ve had some djs where it didn’t even look opened!
Pros:
Usually cheaper than buying new.
Can find the older titles here.
Tax free.
Has English support and navigation.
Relatively fast processing time.
They send internationally!
Cons:
No consolidation. Each store=different order=more shipping cost.
Second hand goods. So it’s not brand new.
Price can be ridiculously expensive based on its rarity/popularity even though it’s not a new book. I actually bought 2 titles for 4k yen each when the original price is just over 1k. But I really wanted those books soo….I just bit the bullet lol.
SurugayaA real gem! ♡My favourite second hand store for djs~ Their navi is a lot better than mandarake and has way more items! This is the place to go for any rare goods~ here is the search page for karaxoso.
Did I tell you they have free domestic shipping if you spend over ¥1500?? That’s like $15 lol. They do however have a processing fee if your order is under 5k yen. It’s under ¥300 so still very cheap! Surugaya often have ‘time sales’ and campaigns too! So it’s good to keep an eye out. When you click on an item, there’ll be a red text saying “this product will have a time sale soon” if that’s the case. So if you time it right…maybe you can get it cheaper. But I had many djs go out of stock on me while I waited for a campaign to come (some items sell out within a couple of days) so I don’t risk it anymore if there are items that have only 1 in stock in my cart.
Also this is one of the stores where you can buy without a credit card and use PayPal instead! But if you are buying R18 goods, you can only pay by credit card. They don’t accept foreign credit cards apparently. I did have an order cancel on me when I paid by credit card and I got an email saying I used a foreign card and they can’t accept it. I’m still very gutted about that one. But I’ve also had successful orders using the same exact card…..so it’s really a gamble. PayPal as payment is friendlier I heard! But if you really want to buy r18 goods from here, may luck be on your side and hope they don’t detect your card. (or use a proxy service that allows you to buy R18 goods)
The other downside for this site is the waiting time. Surugaya also has many warehouses and so they have to wait for all the books to arrive in one place before they ship it out to you. But usually with my experiences it takes them about 4 days to complete my order and ship it out. But I did have orders take over a week to process before. As long as you don’t order during the busy times of the year it should be fine.
Pros:
Usually cheaper than buying new. (Most of the time the djs are cheaper than mandarake.)
Best range.
Often have sales and campaigns
Has English support (But they will answer in Japanese)
Free shipping on orders over 1.5k yen
Cons:
Slow processing time.
Like mandarake, some items are ridiculously expensive.
Your card may get declined for being a foreign card.
Note: Previously, I’ve noted you can use debit card as payment…but honestly? it’s kinda weird. From personal experience, make sure you have double the amount of money in your account of what you need to pay for. Until the day it’s ship it. Surugaya likes to take money from you…how should I say…twice(?). Like….how do I explain this…on the day you place the order, money is taken from your card. Your payment will appear as pending on your bank statement. But actually they don’t approve your payment until it’s all ready to be sent to you. On that day, they take the payment from your account again. Like. It’s weird. And if you don’t have that amount available on your card on that day, you get an email from customer service saying they couldn’t go through with the payment. That there was a problem. If you paid by paypal (using your debit card), they will retry the payment if you can provide them evidence that it wasn’t PayPal that made the error. If you paid by using credit card (with your debit) they will cancel your order since the only other option to send the money is by bank. So if you have enough money in your debit card to pay for your order twice, your payment will go smoothly. And that extra payment they tried to make? It won’t even appear on your statement lol. In the end that money isn’t taken from you, so don’t worry about them actually charging you twice for your order.I was so confused why my payments weren’t going through and I only found out by contacting both my card dealer and PayPal. I use my debit card for online purchases so I only put in the amount necessary you see…
Tldr; Surugaya tries to take money from you twice but only one goes through and you need enough funds for both in order for your transaction to go through smoothly if you are using your debit card.

Motherf*cking PSA about sharing art
This will sound like a rant at first but it’s actually a PSA.
This is not about artists sharing their own art - this is about everyone else. These times around, I have been constantly getting angry because people would keep on sharing art without crediting the artist. I recently joined a Danganronpa Facebook group and people are posting drawing after drawing, extremely rarely giving credit (though a bunch of people have started putting a link, either because I raised awareness or because they’re scared of the mean Jan lady). And get this: most people who do that just don’t know that they should credit the artist. They don’t think about it, because they’re not an artist themselves and they don’t realise what it implies... So you just tell them, they’re sorry, they don’t know the artist for this one, and they’ll try to pay attention next time. That’s called being a decent person. But that’s not all there is; I have stumbled upon people who refused to give credit. Some started to insult me because I dared to “make them look bad by asking for the artist” (keep in mind that since I don’t know who I’m talking to, I’m always being very careful and polite when I do so), some actually stated that they were not sharing the artist on purpose and they would refuse to ever do it. Well let me tell you, kiddo, you’re not some “cool troll on the internet”. You’re a disrespectful piece of sh*t. Disrespectful of someone’s work that you’re also stating that you like. You’re not going to have a lot of friends in life if you take things for granted. So, assuming you’re decent enough to understand, let me explain to you, person who likes to share art that is not theirs (which can be amazing if you do it right), the concept of crediting the artist.
1- Why it is important to credit the artist There is one thing I would like you to know: when you share a piece of art or fanart, you’re not sharing a “picture”. You’re sharing a drawing and someone’s time and work.
It’s not something that just exists and you can use however you want. It’s something a particular person created with their own skills and that sometimes took hours or days. In a piece of art, the artist has put their own skill and style that give it the amazing vibe that you love, oh so much. When someone draws something it’s not just a present to the world. It’s something they made for themselves (or the person who asked/payed them to) and were nice enough to share with the community. Artists. Need. Feedback. I want it to be clear that a drawing is not just something that started existing out of nowhere. It’s directly linked to the person who made it. And the artist absolutely needs to know if people like their drawing, or their art in general. They need for their profile to be seen by everyone so that they can receive good and interesting critics. Artists are people. They are not just something that makes good things. They are people with feelings and if their art doesn’t get feedback well guess what? They’ll stop making it. You won’t get any other of their drawings. Which is a shame because tons of people were sharing their piece uncredited, saying they loved it, on places they don’t know about. Plus, when you share a piece of art with credit, it’s a way to help them out! This kind of sharing is great because more people will see the good art and want to check the artist out, thus giving them more well deserved fans. And you, yourself, by knowing the artist who drew that one drawing you’re fond of, will have the opportunity to see more of their art, that you will probably love too.
2- How does one credit correctly
The best way is to directly share from the source. Reblog, retweet, share the stuff from where it was posted. But if you’re doing it on another website, well, simply enough, give a link to the original piece, by the original poster. If the only post or website you knew about was deleted, you can at least give their username (or usernames), so that people know who it was made by (in case they stumble into their new page!). If their name is written directly on the drawing (or I’ve seen people share screenshots of posts), it’s still better to give a link, but in case you reeeaally can’t find it, it’s okay as long as the writing is clear and readable (you know, if the quality is low and the drawing is all small, you can’t be able to read the name properly). This also means that if the name is written in Japanese and you’re sharing it on a group/website that speaks another language... People won’t be able to search for the artist. If on some drawing or screenshot there’s written 夜神 月 in the corner, I won’t be able to copy-paste it like text (because... it’s on a drawing or screenshot...) nor read it.
3- Common errors to avoid Simply enough, there is some stuff to remember. • Pinterest is NEVER proper credit. Artists don’t post their drawings on pinterest, it’s a website made to share “pictures” from other websites and the worst place for someone like me who wants to scream at the view of uncredited art. • All the booru (danbooru, gelbooru...) websites and zerochan are not proper credit either, because the artists don’t post their art on there, it’s being shared there by other people. Well, it’s at least better because it always leaves the artist’s name somewhere: but since it’s there, you yourself can see it and share it (or at best find their website and share it), because it’s better credit for obvious reasons. • If you see that the page/blog where you found drawing has no other art or drawings with a clearly different style, you can guess that they’re not the original poster. They’re sharing art that is not theirs. Search for credit in their descriptions or for something to punch them with. • Don’t just save drawings... Except for when you do it from some websites (if I remember well danbooru does it right, wouldn’t bet my life on it though) the name of the artist will not be in the file’s name and will be lost forever. If you really want to save a drawing, save it with the artist’s name! Name the file “xxx by [artist]”, this way you’ll be able to find them again or simply credit them if you post the drawing somewhere else. If you’re on your phone, maybe take a screenshot so that you can see the name of the poster too? But in general, I would say, don’t save drawings. Create an account on the website where you found the art and from there like it, or share it. • Instead of searching for art of your favourite characters on Google, do it on a website like deviantArt, tumblr, pixiv or something like that! This way you’ll make sure that you don’t only have Pinterest as a source.
4- What to do if you already have the picture saved and don’t remember the artist • Search for them, obviously. You can use Google Image Reverse Search but it’s not very accurate, especially because if it’s old or made by a famous artist on pixiv, you’ll only find Pinterest links. Recently someone from the same group I was talking about earlier introduced me to this amazing website : SauceNAO. It works almost everytime, you put the picture you saved (in “advanced options” you can put a link) in, and it’ll give you the “best” websites where it found it, the first usually being the one where it was posted. (It also finds it on danbooru pretty often, we’ve talked about that one already) • If you really can’t find them, well... you don’t have to share it. Remember that. You don’t have to post the drawing on that one facebook group or your twitter or I don’t know, you won’t die. Sharing art without giving the artist is disrespectful, period. Hardwork and someone’s creations are things you need to respect and not share around like it’s nothing. You’ll only encourage other people who do it too. If you really really reeeeaaaalllyyy want to share this drawing because it just works too well in a certain situation, at least make it clear that you are not the artist, you don’t know who they are and you are currently searching for them. This way, if someone knows them, they’ll tell you - and people will think of searching for it instead of taking the “picture”‘s existence for granted. And it’s at least the tiniest bit more respectful.
5- Additional info
Right now I only talked about drawings and fanart because it’s what I know the most about, but this also applies for videos, fictions, fanfictions etc. This applies to anything that was created by a particular person and required work, and/or can be considered as art. Just think about this example: Imagine if you'd written an amazing essay and your teacher found it super interesting, so they gave you your good grade but also copied the essay and shared it on his own websites, not saying that you were the one who’d written it. The essay would become famous and no one would ever know YOU wrote it. This is how it feels to have your art shared without credit. You might not even know it.
I think that’s it, and I hope it’s clear. If you’re an artist yourself or love art or are in fandom in general, please share this. Feel free to add something if you think I forgot an element! And if you have some questions, my ask box is open. I think it’s really important that everyone is aware of this and understands it. I decided to make this post because after asking 5 people to give credit to the artists who drew the 12 random different drawings they’d shared of Komaeda each (a boy’s birthday is tough), I saw that one video by Mo Selim being shared on ANOTHER group yet again and had to give credit myself yet again... And I’m just angry that people either don’t know or don’t care.
You need to know. You need to be careful. Thanks in advance for all the amazing artists you’ll give more representation to by sharing their art with credit!

I had an ok week. I mostly worked on smaller downloader jobs and tag import options.
tag import options
Tag import options now has more controls. There is a new 'cog' icon that lets you determine if tags should be applied--much like file import options's recent 'presentation' checkboxes--to 'new files', 'already in inbox', and 'already in archive', and there is an entry to only add tags that already exist (i.e. have non-zero count) on the service.
Sibling and parent filtering is also more robust, being applied before and after tag import options does its filtering. And the 'all namespaces' compromise solution used by the old defaults in file->options and network->manage default tag import options is now automatically replaced with the newer 'get all tags'.
Due to the sibling and parent changes, if you have a subscription to Rule34Hentai or another site that only has 'unnamespaced' tags, please make sure you edit its tag import options and change it to 'get all tags', as any unnamespaced tags that now get sibling-collapsed to 'creator' or 'series' pre-filtering will otherwise be discarded. Due to the more complicated download system taking over, 'get all tags' is the new option to go for if you just want everything, and I recommend it for everyone.
For those who do just want a subset of available tags, I will likely be reducing/phasing out the explicit namespace selection in exchange for a more complicated tag filter object. I also expect to add some commands to make it easier to mass-change tag import options for subscriptions and to tell downloaders and subscriptions just to always use the default, whatever that happens to be.
misc downloader stuff
I have added a Deviant Art parser. It now fetches the embedded image if the artist has disabled high-res download, and if it encounters a nsfw age-gate, it sets an 'ignored' status (the old downloader fetched a lower-quality version of the nsfw image). We will fix this ignored status when the new login system is in place.
Speaking of which, the edit subscriptions panels now have 'retry ignored' buttons, which you may wish to fire on your pixiv subscriptions. This will retry everything has has previously been ignored due to being manga, and should help in future as more 'ignored' problems are fixed.
The 'checker options' on watchers and subscriptions will now keep a fixed check phase if you set a static check period. So, if you set the static period as exactly seven days, and the sub first runs on Wednesday afternoon, it will now always set a next check time of the next Wed afternoon, no matter if they actually happen to subsequently run on Wed afternoon or Thurs morning or a Monday three weeks later. Previously, the static check period was being added to the 'last completed check time', meaning these static checks were creeping forward a few hours every check. If you wish to set the check time for these subs, please use the 'check now' button to force a phase reset.
I've jiggled the multiple watcher's sort variables around so that by default they will sort with subject alphabetical but grouped by status, with interesting statuses like DEAD at the top. It should make the default easier to at-a-glance see if you need to action anything.
full list
ďťżconverted much of the increasingly complicated tag import options to a new sub-object that simplifies a lot of code and makes things easier to serialise and update in future
tag import options now allows you to set whether tags should be applied to new files/already in inbox/already in archive, much like the file import options' 'presentation' checkboxes
tag import options now allows you to set whether tags should be filtered to only those that already have a non-zero current count on that tag service (i.e. only tags that 'already exist')
tag import options now has two 'fetch if already in db' checkboxes--for url and hash matches separately (the hash stuff is advanced, but this new distinction will be of increasing use in the future)
tag import options now applies sibling and parent collapse/expansion before tag filtering, which will improve filtering accuracy (so if you only want creator tags, and a sibling would convert an unnamespaced tag up to a creator, you will now get it)
the old 'all namespaces' checkbox is now removed from some 'defaults' areas, and any default tag import options that had it checked will instead get 'get all' checked as they update
caught up the ui and importer code to deal with these tag import option changes
improved how some 'should download metadata/file' pre-import checking works
moved all complicated 'let's derive some specific tag import options from these defaults' code to the tag import options object itself
wrote some decent unit tests for tag import options
wrote a parser for deviant art. it has source time now, and falls back to the embedded image if the artist has disabled high-res downloading. if it finds a mature content click-through (due to not being logged in), it will now veto and set 'ignored' status (we will revisit this and get high quality nsfw from DA when the login manager works.)
if a check timings object (like for a subscription or watcher) has a 'static' check interval, it will now apply that period to the 'last next check time', so if you set it to check every seven days, starting on Wednesday night, it will now repeatedly check on Wed night, not creep forward a few minutes/hours every time due to applying time to the 'last check completed time'. if you were hit by this, hit 'check now' to reset your next check time to now
the multiple watcher now sorts by status by default, and blank status now sorts below DEAD and the others, so you should get a neat subject-alphabetical sort grouped by interesting-status-first now right from the start
added 'clear all multiwatcher highlights' to 'pages' menu
fixed a typo bug in the new multiple watcher options-setting buttons
added 'retry ignored' buttons to edit subscription/subscriptions panels, so you can retry pixiv manga pages en masse
added 'always show iso time' checkbox to options->gui, which will stop replacing some recent timestamps with '5 minutes ago'
fixed an index-selection issue with compound formulae in the new parsing system
fixed a file progress count status error in subscriptions that was reducing progress rather than increasing range when the post urls created new urls
improved error handling when a file import object's index can't be figured out in the file import list
to clear up confusion, the crash recovery dialog now puts the name of the default session it would like to try loading on its ok button
the new listctrl class will now always sort strings in a case-insensitive way
wrote a simple 'fetch a url' debug routine for the help->debug menu that will help better diagnose various parse and login issues in future
fixed an issue where the autocomplete dropdown float window could sometimes get stuck in 'show float' mode when it spawned a new window while having focus (usually due to activating/right-clicking a tag in the list and hitting 'show in new page'). any other instances of the dropdown getting stuck on should now also be fixable/fixed with a simple page change
improved how some checkbox menu data is handled
started work on a gallery log, which will record and action gallery urls in the new system much like the file import status area
significant refactoring of file import objects--there are now 'file seeds' and 'gallery seeds'
added an interesting new 'alterate' duplicate example to duplicates help
brushed off and added some more examples to duplicates help, thanks to users for the contributions
misc refactoring
next week
I also got started on the gallery overhaul this week, and I feel good about where I am going. I will keep working on this and hope to roll out a 'gallery log'--very similar to the file import status panel, that will list all gallery pages hit during a downloader's history with status and how many links parsed and so on--within the next week or two.
The number of missing entries in network->manage url class links is also shrinking. A few more parsers to do here, and then I will feel comfortable to start removing old downloader code completely.

how i like to spot reposted pictures
YOU WILL NEED:
Reblog Graphs. You don’t really need this, it just brings up the root post’s tags nice and easy. To turn Graphs on, go to Account > Settings > Labs.
Eyes. Most people on Tumblr are good here
Skepticism. Most people on Tumblr are not good here
Tea. You may encounter circumstances where tea will taste very good
Excellent! Put on your thinking caps, and let’s get sleuthing.
None of these are hard rules, but they should ring some alarm bells:
Tags for literally everything in the picture(s), far beyond the normal first 5 that are actually registered in tumblr tags. Actually, some legitimate artists do tag everything, but like. You’ll know. No tags at all isn’t an absolute free pass, either, but at least the poster isn’t trying to jam this into every tag possible
Minor tip-off: No “art tag” tag like “my art” or “[something to do with their name] art” or “my [art noun]”. Also not a hard rule, many artists don’t have an art tag. Most reposters, however, would never go as far as to claim that art as theirs. That would be stealing! They’re just sharing for awareness. And notes! Haha!
Un-tipoff: Artist name in tags or original comment or source. Good! Ideally the reposter has secured permission from the original artist to repost, too, those folks are the best, but putting down some kind of source or artist name shows the intention of giving credit. We’re not too concerned with these people (permission to repost is a different can of worms), we’re looking for OP impersonators.
Original comment doesn’t quite sound like something an artist would say about their own work. OK, this tip empirically sucks but You’ll know it when you see it. Something immodest like, “This is breath-taking!“ or “I laughed” or “The best __ I’ve ever seen”. It might resemble something attached to something you’d see on your Facebook timeline. It might not. No comment at all doesn’t guarantee genuine or fake, though.
Confirming your suspicions (Actually you can skip to this part directly): Time to look into OP’s blog. I like to use their archive, since it gives me a good look at photo posts and tags pretty easily, but keep in mind that photo posts examined in this manner only show the first photo in a photoset.
By far, the most obvious giveaway will be dramatic inconsistencies in the artstyle of posted works.
Take, for example, [NSF W blog, click at own risk] this fine photoset-- environment-focused, very colourful, lineless Touhou x Pokemon crossovers, tagged liberally.
Another post on the blog: clean lines, large anime eyes, extremely well-(and differently!) shaded, has @kikugetsu‘s signature at the bottom, tagged liberally.
Yet another post on the blog: pixel art animation, also doesn’t look quite like the first. Tagged liberally.
One more: Four panel comic, in English, with yet another colouring, lineart, and shading style. Tagged liberally (”#meme #Funny Memes”).
Sure, some artists are very skilled and can change up their artstyle quite a bit, but this is going a bit far.
Final checking: Reverse image searching. Very easy to do! In Chrome, it can be as easy as right-clicking a picture and selecting “Search Google for Image”; however, Google doesn’t handle pictures from twitter or pixiv very well and sometimes just burps up a buttload of irrelevant photos anyways, so if it’s from an anime fandom (artists tend to post on those sites), I would use saucenao.com.
In this case, you would right-click the picture and copy the address to the image -> go to saucenao -> advanced options -> paste URL -> get sauce. If you find a definite hit to a picture, you should be able to examine the artist’s profile and websites and make some more judgements. Does the artist already have a completely different tumblr? Do they speak a different language on their websites? Did another image search from the inspected tumblr lead to a different artist? Use your judgement.
Some final thoughts:
Sometimes (especially on twitter), you post a cool picture to share it with your close circle of friends, it gets retweeted/reblogged a couple of times, which becomes a lot of times, and suddenly your nice casual share has turned into a deceptive-looking repost. WHOOPS. I get you, I get you, warn’t in a source posting mood, was chilling or gunning for a laugh. I still believe it’s a very good practice to pay your respects to the good Original Artists with a little source on the side, but I’m not as mad as I could be.
Sometimes you post a cool picture to spread the awareness, so that others can be awash in the greatness of this high quality content just like you. Neat! Consider reblogging from a direct source or repost with permission if you can find one, linking to one if there isn’t one on tumblr, or getting permission yourself (not as hard or scary as you’d think!).
Sometimes you spread your noodly attention-seeking tentacle arms all over the tags and pleasure yourself to sound of misguided notes rolling in. If this is you, please reconsider your life choices and your decision to disrespect artists.
Original artists of pictures used in examples:
@nin086, more active on twitter https://twitter.com/ninten86
@kikugetsu, direct source of image here
@migelhososi, direct source
@yoruny, direct source
If you found this PSA helpful, I recommend (once again) learning about artists and permissions. I have a tag of some useful posts here.

I had a great week. Tag import options are now easy to mass-manage, and I have fleshed out the new downloader system's file page parsers.
default tag import options
Almost done with tag import options, I promise!
This is an important but slightly complicated update. Nothing huge will change, and you'll see what is going on as you use it. tl;dr is: go to network->downloaders->manage default tag import options and set something good for default for file posts if you haven't already.
This week has an important update to how tag import options (TIO) typically work. First, the old TIO options under options->importing are now deprecated--they are no longer referred to by any downloader, and I will be removing the ui entirely in a couple of weeks. All downloaders now inherit from the newer network->downloaders->manage default tag import options, which operates in the new download system. Please make sure your default tag import options are set up how you want, as any new downloader or sub now inherits from this new location! You will get a popup about this on update as a reminder.
Second, the TIOs for new downloaders and subscriptions now start in a 'default' mode, meaning 'I do not have any specific options, just use whatever is set in the defaults at the time of import'. In the TIO edit ui, this is a new checkbox that greys out the rest of the panel. This means that if you change the new defaults under network->downloaders->manage default tag import options, every 'default' TIO across the program will inherit those changes!
This new 'default' mode makes the job of managing TIOs for dozens or hundreds of downloaders and subscriptions much easier, particularly now that TIO have become more powerful and complicated. Rather than, let's say, adding the tag 'vore' to twenty different subscriptions' blacklists, you can now just add it to the defaults and all your 'default'-set subscriptions will work with that updated default when they next run. But if you have a particular subscription or downloader that needs a special blacklist or namespace filtering, you can still set a specific TIO and make it happen.
Your existing downloaders and subscriptions will keep their specific TIOs on update. They will keep parsing tags like they did before.
But when you are comfortable with this new system, you may want to set many if not all of your subscriptions to default TIO, so I have added a button to manage subscriptions that sets TIO to all selected subs! Furthermore, any normal 'tag import options' button now has a right-click menu that lets you copy/paste the TIO to/from clipboard, so if you do have some clever tag filter or blacklist you want to spam to several places, you can now do it with just a few clicks.
Also, the 'url downloader' now has its own TIO. This also starts 'default', which is basically what it was doing before--referring to network->downloaders->manage default tag import options based on import URL right when it imported--but now you can overrule this 'refer to defaults' mode and set a particular set of rules if you are doing some clever one-time job with the URLs you are giving it.
more parsers
In the new page downloader, if a site does not yet have a new parser, it falls back on the old system. This left me the job of filling in the blanks for all the default sites that come with a fresh install of hydrus. I have been adding new ones here and there, but this week I pulled out the stops and finished them all off. There are new parsers for furry.booru.org, hentai foundry, moebooru (konachan, yande.ro, sakugabooru), shimmie (rule34.paheal, rule34hentai, mishimmie), newgrounds, sankaku (thanks to some users for contributing this one), and tumblr. All these sites now support Post URL drag-and-drop import (and sakugabooru doesn't actually have a search by default, so this is likely the only way you can take advantage of it for now) and have improved file parsing support and can sometimes grab a source time and so on.
So, by default, a new hydrus client now deals with file pages entirely on the new download system. This frees me up to delete more and more of the old legacy system in the coming weeks, shifting everything over to the newer and neater code. I expect I'll throw in some other new parsers for imgur and so on as well!
There remains the issue of custom boorus. Any user who added a custom booru in the old system either by downloading a yaml file from somewhere or making it themselves has something that is a bit tricky to convert to the new system automatically. I made this new system in part so I wouldn't be needed to make new downloaders, so I don't want to go down a rabbit hole of writing a hundred new parsers, but I think I'll figure out a simple way to update the old custom booru objects into barebones new parsers in a coming update. I will probably do it all in one go, when the gallery and 'searcher' object work are done, but it may need a bit of extra work on your end to connect things together. If you care about this stuff, please watch this space. I will be working with the users who are interested in making new parsers, and we'll figure out a variety of 'make it work now in a difficult technical way' to 'I can wait a couple months for the single drag-and-drop solution' methods so you can get derpibooru and the other unusual but desired boorus working properly.
Btw, the new tumblr parser does not work with the in-client tumblr downloader yet, but it will in a couple of weeks when the gallery stuff is finishing up. But if you want to try it out, just try drag-and-dropping some tumblr post URLs on the client in v314. As well as doing the difficult 'raw' URL translation correctly (and not doing it for the pre-2013 URLs for which the translation is invalid), it now figures out a creator: tag, including swapping out for the original root creator on reblog posts! It is almost as complicated as the pixiv parser, and I am really pleased that the new download system is flexible enough to have supported what I needed it to do.
misc
There are some other quality-of-life options and improvements this week:
''options->speed and memory'' now has 'cache timeout' options for thumbnails and rendered images.
''options->downloading'' now has 'hide/show the 'D' on short import summaries', the default being hide.
''options->gui'' now has a 'only autosave last session during idle time', which is useful if you run a really heavy client (like 200k+ files/import objects) that you leave on all the time and are getting regular 10s+ lag from the session autosaving. I still ''recommend'' you try if you can to keep your client below 50k at once, but if you can't, try this out and let me know how it goes.
The ''network'' menu is now categorised into something better than 'a giant single mess'.
Edit subscription panels now has 'copy queries', which will copy all the selected subscription queries' search texts to your clipboard. This is basically the opposite of the 'paste queries' button on the same panel, and makes it easy to copy twenty queries to a new subscription or chat window or whatever.
full list
ďťżtag import options can now be set to 'default', meaning 'use whatever the default is at the time of import', which will be an easier way of managing TIOs for many subs that you'd prefer all share the same TIO settings anyway
updated tag import options ui to enable this default setting where appropriate
updated the newer import pipeline to work with 'default'-set tag import options
new downloaders, subscriptions, watchers, and multi-watchers now start with 'default' tag import options
deleted the old default tag import options management code and put some text up on options->importing making notice about the impending shift. a popup message will also say this on update
tag import options buttons now have a right-click menu with copy/paste/default options for quick assignment and duplication!
added 'overwrite tag import options' to manage subscriptions--once you are comfortable with the new 'default' TIO mode, and after some small tests, you might want to switch all your subs over to 'default'
the 'urls' downloader now has a tag import options--it initialises as 'default'
added furry.booru.org to gelbooru 0.2.0 parser
wrote a hentai foundry file page parser
wrote a moebooru file page parser (this works for konachan, yande.re, and sakugabooru)
wrote a shimmie parser (this works for rule34.paheal, rule34hentai, and mishimmie)
wrote a newgrounds parser
integrated the user-created sankaku parser
wrote a tumblr parser that handles photo, photoset, and video posts, auto-converts to 'raw' urls for those post-2012 urls that can handle it, figures out a creator tag (reverting to the reblog root if it is a reblog post!), and cooks you breakfast
(hence all these above sites now support drag and drop!)
rolled out some new tumblr url classes to handle all this.
added sakugabooru url classes
fixed an issue where url classes were not normalising api urls in all cases, meaning some url classes would not api-link correctly in 'manage url class links' panel
fixed an issue with deviant art legacy gallery parser pulling some funky 'creator:' tags
some misc new downloader error handling improvements
the watcher now uses the new gallery object to parse and generate file import objects
the downloaders with gallery logs should now report non-success gallery fetches, along with error tracebacks (this will include some no-worry 404s the legacy downloader sometimes uses to terminate searches)
added image and thumbnail cache timeout time delta buttons to options->speed and memory
added a 'show the D on short file import summaries' checkbox to options->downloading--it defaults to off
the 'I' on short file import summaries is now 'Ig' to clear up 1/I confusion
added 'copy queries' to the edit subscription panel, which lets you copy all the selected queries' search texts to clipboard, newline separated
added a checbox to options->gui that commands 'last session' only be autosaved during idle time. this is useful if you usually have a huge (200k+ file) session and your client is always on
fixed file import status button right-click, which I messed up somehow last week with the 'retry ignored' add
shook up and collapsed the network menu into neater categories
tightened-up the rarely used pre-parsing conversion panel on the edit page parser panel to just a button with a bit of explaining text
if database errors include the word 'malformed', the client now throws a little extra error text pointing people to the help.txt in the db dir
cleared out some legacy download code
cleared out legacy hard drive import error handling, moving it all to the new file import object
misc refactoring and cleanup
next week
I moved the new gallery watcher forward as well, this week. The new gallery pipeline is mostly in place, and thread watchers now use it, so now I have to re-jigger the regular 'walk through gallery page' downloader code around a bit and then I can blitz a bunch of new gallery parsers (which are thankfully very simple) like I've just done the file page parsers today. So, I'd ''like'' to have gallery url drag-and-drop (i.e. you drag and drop a danbooru gallery search url onto the client, and it starts a new hydrus page for that search, either getting just that page's thumbnails, or starting a new search from page index 0, or starting a new search from the dropped page) in for next week.
